DFRPG / Ritual complexity
« on: March 04, 2011, 06:45:49 AM »
I've noticed a large disparity in peoples opinions on this matter so out of curiosity id like to see what people think.

What complexity level do you believe that a skilled character should be able to accomplish quickly?
1] <5
2] Lore +modifiers [3-15]
3] Assessments are easy! 30+

Do you think that as the complexity level increases the time to do the ritual increases as well, and if so is this represented by the necessity of getting more assessments or a base increase in time spent?

Finally how long do you think a ritual that is under the complexity you can commonly handle, ie <lore, should take?
1] Exchanges
2] minutes
3] st whim

Over the years i have observed that i have a certain flair for making memorable antagonists, so i'm creating this thread as a place to put some of them. thus making them available to anyone who would like to use them. Requests for general or specific types of evil characters are welcome.

DFRPG / Autumn magic pfc
« on: February 02, 2011, 05:15:37 PM »
I'm positive others have done this before, but i wanted to get peoples feedback on this interpretation of Autumn magic.

Wilderness (Autumn) Magic
Drawing on the power of the Autumn Court, you’re able to cast spells that fit its essential nature: Wildness, Hunting, Growth, Death [as transition or sacrifice], Earth, and Wisdom. These magics are under the sway and watch of Cernunos; making use of it will inevitably catch his notice.
Cost: 4 refresh for the package, not to mention some way to tap into Cernenos's power. Reduce this cost by 1 if you have Evocation or Thaumaturgy; reduce the cost by 2 if you have both.
Benefits: Standard sponsored magic benefits (page 288). Autumn magic comes with automatic, additional specializations in Biomancy: +1 to control, +1 to complexity, stacking on top of any existing specializations. In addition, Autumn magic may be used as an element for evocation, allowing evocation spell effects that are appropriate to the themes of Autumn magic. This includes the ability to produce effects along the lines of biomancy (page 284) with less of a requirement for biological expertise in the spell-caster — Cernenos already understands biology pretty well and will do the heavy lifting for the caster — but with an evocation spells methods and speed. Autumn evocations always include [unsure, suggestions welcomed] in some way: When channeling the power of the Autumn court you may choose to use your control bonus from Biomancy instead of the control bonus you would normally use with evocation, so long as the casting incorporates the Themes of Autumn Magic.

Note: Could be viewed as the inverse of kemlerian necromancy in that your tapping into the power of life itself instead of death.

DFRPG / Proactive block mechanics?
« on: January 12, 2011, 04:42:24 PM »
I'm fairly certain its been stated that you can substitute shifts of a spell for a skill roll. [ie veils for stealth, or the complexity of a biomancy spell for fists]. Myself and my current dm are having a discussion about how you handle this mathematically though.

Say you want to get a x that you can use instead of a roll, how do you make it so that you can use that x more then once? do you simply use the persistence rules as if it was a block, meaning that you add one complexity per extra use.

Do you also have to pay shifts into duration so that the spell doesn't wear of before you use all of the charges?

Or are there simply no rules at all for such because this "isn't a block" and the persistence rules don't apply?

thoughts comments book quotes appreciated.

DFRPG / Emotions fuel magic right?
« on: April 30, 2010, 09:20:07 PM »
Someone mentioned in another thread that in the dresdenverse emotions are essentially pure magic, or magic fuel if you would. this brought up something i thought about a long time ago when reading one of the earlier books. Pain can be used to power magic right? harry dose it a few times "channeling all his pain and rage" so how would you represent a magician with a syndrome like fibromyalgia, who is essentially in constant near crippling pain?

It seems like he would have a rather powerful wellspring of power to draw on, but i imagine it would be somewhat "tainted" drawing so much power from his own continual pain, and likely hatred.

DFRPG / Charecter pfc

A few other people have posted there characters. or concepts there working on, and since there's been a bunch of discussion on biomancy/permanent transformations i figured id put up what those discussions congealed into for my gaming group. This is essentially a focused talent that had an instinctive understanding of biomancy. he ended up joining am atavistic cult lead by a slightly insane wyld-fae who wanted to "return humanity to its true form" that being something vaguely like lychanthropes. the character managed to actually successfully perform the transformation ritual shortly before the wardens learned about the whole thing. the rest of the story is picked up by his aspect descriptions i believe. please feel free to post any comments/questions, or areas you think i am misusing the system.

DFRPG / Rite of Ascension?
« on: April 16, 2010, 02:12:45 AM »
I'm pretty solid on most of the rules but figuring out what the complexity of a ritual seems to be beyond me without some kind of chart so i figured id put out here what i want it to do and see what methods others can come up with.

This would be a ritual taught to my character during his apprenticeship to a Wyld Fae/demon like creature its purpose is to "restore a man to the purity of the ancient ways" or less obliquely to transform a human into a less then [or more then] human state. essentially creating a form of scion.

mechanically it gives me inhuman toughness strength and recovery as well as aspect of the beast and claws. [ all of which I'm paying for, the ritual is mostly just background flavor to explain being a scion without a heritage]

so the cruncjy bits is getting

I'm completely at a loss for what the complexity of this ritual should be and more importantly why it should be that. any help would be greatly appreciated
