Title: NYCC Dinner
Post by: Priscellie on February 02, 2009, 01:47:06 AM
This weekend is New York Comic Con!  Jim won't be in attendance this year, unfortunately, but we Butcher fans can still enjoy an evening of wild tomfoolery in his absence!  Allow me to introduce McAnally's '09: a casual dinner for Jim-Butcher.com forum members and our friends on Friday night.

Who would be interested in joining the madness?  RSVP here.  Also, I welcome suggestions for where we should eat.  Somewhere within easy walking distance of the Javitz Center (34th and 11th), certainly, and where loud, raucous guffaws will not be frowned upon. :D

Come join the fun!  It'll be a great opportunity to meet your fellow forumites face to face.  And who knows?  Maybe some industrious little gnome will even break out the first sample chapter of Turn Coat four days in advance. :D

EDIT:  The event will be held at Brother Jimmy's BBQ (http://www.brotherjimmys.com/), Friday night at 8:30.  You must RSVP in this thread or here (http://www.jim-butcher.com/news/000322.php) before noon EST on Friday to be guaranteed a seat.

Attending:

Priscilla
Shecky
Sue
Craig
IIIMarconeIII
Matthew Merback
Lauren
The Dabel Brothers crew (6 or 7)
Victoria Reyes and Adam Arnett

That is the day of our event Dancing Fox (http://eastkingdom.org/event-detail.html?eid=1691) 2 hours north of NYC by train.

Darn it.  If I wasn't in charge...  Well, you can always just come eat here!

Wish I could make it, but I've got prior plans. There's a nice bar and grill called McHale's on 8th Ave off of W.47th Street that kind of reminds me of MacAnally's, and which can handle casual groups. When I was writing fiction, I wrote a series of shorts set in and around it, modeled on Arthur C. Clarke's Tales From The White Hart, just because I liked the ambience.

I'll be there. No bells on; we don't want to frighten the natives. Sue & I are in the process of researching restaurants and/or watering holes in the vicinity.

Here's something interesting (never been there, but it seems to be pretty appreciated):

Plus, it's really not far to the Times Square area (5-10 minute walk, easily), and there's lots of nifty stuff around there.

That's, um, an odd hate. 'Splainy?

Apparently, he was a jerk to Scott and a few other people at another convention.  Apparently, though he hasn't done another significant thing besides The Hulk, he acts like he's a big shot.

Of course, this is all hearsay.  I have not yet met The Hulk.

I work until 7, as well, so 8 or 8:30 would be ideal for me.  You'll be fine!

Carmine's is "family style". In other words, they put these VATS of food on your table, and you and your fellow diners serve your damn selves from the vats. :D

Honestly, I was thinking more along the lines of a chill-out cafe kind of place where we can all just take over some sofas or something and sip on assorted beverages with maybe some noshies. Sue, surprisingly, doesn't know of any such places either there or in the Times Square area. Anyone have any ideas? Does this appeal?

For those of us going and have checked the programming. Is there anything you're looking forward to seeing? The inner theater geek wawants to catch the lightsaber combat training and the show by VampireCowboys.
Title: Re: NYCC Dinner
Post by: Priscellie on February 04, 2009, 06:26:42 PM
Yes, you DEFINITELY want to catch whatever the Vampire Cowboys have to offer!  I freaking love them.  Which reminds me--I also need to get a group together to see Soul Samurai, their latest show.  If it's one tenth as great as Fight Girl Battle World, it'll still be brilliant.

As for the restaurant, we should probably make the decision today.  I'm leaning towards Carmine's at 8:30.  Any objections?

I was just thinking about going to one of their shows. They haven't put up alot of screenings yet though. The Futurama is always a favorite

No objections to Carmine's here; it'll probably be the biggest crowd-pleaser. Sue and I will already have eaten dinner, so you won't have to deal with my finickiness and my allergies. :D

FYI, here's linkage (click on the Theater District on the bottom row):

Yeah, I figured it was a safe bet. I would have gone to a chilled out cafe type place, but to be honest, We'd be damned hard pressed to find anything "chilled out" that close to Broadway. It'd be all bars and shitty theme restaurants (Hard Rock, I'm looking at YOU!)
Title: Re: NYCC Dinner
Post by: Shecky on February 04, 2009, 07:08:38 PM
Sadly, you're right. Been polling everyone I know who's familiar with the area, and they all say, "Chilled out? What's that?"

I wish I could go, but with no job, I have no money, so I'll have to watch from afar.

However, I have a friend or two who will be there and live up closer to that area than I do, so I've pointed her in this direction.  Maybe she can help you out... or bee-bop along!  She's one of my 'Dresden-recruits'!  *g*

Post by: Priscellie on February 05, 2009, 05:31:12 PM
Gah.  Just called Carmine's, and the only opening they have is at 10:30.  McHale's is closed, and Daisy Mae's only has a prepaid system.  I tried a number of other places suggested by my coworkers and eventually landed us reservations at 8:30 at Brother Jimmy's BBQ (http://www.brotherjimmys.com/) (31st and 8th).  Way to wait until the last minute, Priscilla!  Still, it's going to be delicious and awesome.

Update: Frickin' Saturday tix are sold out. Now we have to buy weekend passes. Oh well; as Sue said, we'll just have to come in on Sunday too. :D

Ah, they must have increased the price as the event approached.  Are you or Sue in the city?  They sell tickets at Midtown Comics--one location is at 40th and 7th, just a few blocks from where we're having dinner.  And that way, you won't have to wait in line at the con to pick up your badge.

At this rate (STILL with the non-loading), we may have to do that, but Sue's down past Wall St. If this keeps up, I think I'm gonna call ahead to MTC and see if they can't hold some for us until we arrive.  :-\

Okay, fixed. Thanks to you, Generous Fae-cellie, I can haz tikitz! MTC doesn't have any more weekend passes, but they assure me that there will be plenty of Saturday passes when we swing by this evening on our way to NOM. What's super cool about these guys is that they're selling them AT COST - no fee, nada (well, taxes, but that's fine by me).

Does your computer dislike Photobucket? Or are there issues with pop-ups/third-party stuff? If this helps, here's a direct link to what I have so far:

And the aforementioned "Molly raids Harry's closet" picture!  (Cover art for "The Carpenter Files"?)

Great photos, Shecky!  This one (http://s124.photobucket.com/albums/p9/SheckyX/NYCC/?action=view&current=P2070049.jpg) cracks me up.

Molly: Light Morgan's robe on fire?  I have no idea who was responsible for that.  Must have been gremlin-demons.  Sneaky ones.
Harry:  *must... not... grin*

I just had a horrid thought: I realized that I didn't have a single picture of Jerry's outfit. He was right - the goggles made it simply an outstanding steampunk outfit. Does ANYONE have a pic of that?!?

Okay is it just me or does Amber Benson look like the shy fan posing for a picture with our goddess?

Yeah, yeah, flows of energy through the body and all that, but the blasting rod "feels" right in my left hand.  And you know what Harry says about blue Play-Doh and mental associations augmenting magical muscle. :D

Plus the male element versus the female element...  hot cold, left right, black white, yin yang.  An all that.

I already posted a new thread about this, but I thought I'd ask here what everyones plans are for Watchmen?  90% sure I'll be in NY.

Seriously? You'll be in NY? Dude. We're there. That's one of the VERY few movies that I'll actually go see... well, maybe not opening night (I don't like people THAT much), but in the early going. And if it's on an IMAX screen, I'm ALL over that.

Dude, awesome!  There will definitely be IMAX shenanigans opening weekend, if not opening night.  If not the midnight screening. :D

Hell ya!  I'm a big midnight screening person.  Especially this movie.

Opening on a Friday, right? What poor sap are we gonna get to stand in line for hours and save spots? Matt, if we do a midnight screening, I may be forced to try one of those Butt-Flavored Energy Concoctions. And it'll be all your fault. Just pray that Sue isn't tired; caffeinating her can qualify as a public hazard. :D

I wonder if any of the IMAX theatres have assigned seating.  No line-waiting required!

Grr. Unless my Google-fu has withered, there are no midnight showings of Watchmen. There was apparently one scheduled for the IMAX in W. Nyack, but those went on sale via cell phone in early December and they're gone. I can't find any more. But the showtimes at Lincoln Square (doesn't seem to be a showing at the Empire 25 on 42nd) are 10, 2, 6 and 10. And, naturally, tickets aren't available online for Lincoln Square.

Anyone got better info?

No go in Connecticut for the big, big screen. The IMAX at Buckland Hills is only showing Jonas Brothers and opera. Where's the culture??

As this conversation no longer has much to do with the NYCC Dinner, I've created a separate thread (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,10799.0.html) for NYC shenanigans.  Let's reroute our Watchmen-y machinations there!
