Congrats to Jim for selling the first three books in a new steampunk series, The Cinder Spires!
From Publishers Weekly:QuotePenguin Group is continuing its relationship with bestselling fantasy writer Jim Butcher. The author of the Dresden Files and Codex Alera closed a seven-figure, three-book deal with his current publisher for a new series. Anne Sowards, at Roc, took world English rights to The Cinder Spires: The Aeronaut’s Windlass, and two sequels, from agent Jennifer Jackson at Donald Maass Literary. Butcher recently published the 14th book in the Dresden Files, a series that has been adapted to TV (on SyFy channel) and turned into a comic book (published by Dynamite Entertainment). The Cinder Spires, Jackson said, is set in a world “of black spires that tower for miles over a mist-shrouded surface” and follows a war between two of the Spires: Spire Albion and Spire Aurora.
At the Reddit AMA a few months ago, Jim said, “It’s kinda League of Extraordinary Gentlemen meets Sherlock meets Hornblower. There are goggles and airships and steam power and bizarre crystal technology and talking cats, who are horrid little bullies.”
Jim is still writing the first book, The Aeronaut’s Windlass, so we don’t have a release date yet. We’ll let you know as soon as there’s something to announce!
Don't worry; the talking changes their personality not one whit.So they are ruthless, fickle, and devious?

Are any of them called Tobermory?
Any mention of a publication date or is that still in scheduling hands?
These cats make Cat Sith seem self-effacing and courteous....this is horrifying. I am starting to think that the cats must run everything.

The only down side I see to this is that means it will be that much longer before DF #15 comes out!
That, and now I have two JB books to look forward too!
Well, thats really 13 when you add up the rest of the DF books as well as the 3 Cinder Spires books!
I don't know that it mean that, per se. Jim has always had other projects going on between Dresden books, which is good. Otherwise he would get burnt out on them. No one wants that.
Yep. Before Jim finished Alera, he was writing two books a year. When he stopped writing Alera, he started taking over a year to write one book. Funny, that. :D
Yeah, a multitasking Jim is a happy Jim, apparently. And that's what's realy important. And besides, are we really going to complain about having more things of Jim's to read? Because I know I'm not going to.
He described it once as each different writing world being a rest from the other. I can't speak to that with any personal experience, but it sure seems to work for Jim!
Can anyone give me some steampunk recommendations? I have attempted to get into it before but each time that I do I find something horribly written (books, comics, tv) and then start to hate it again. I am hoping that all of you can steer me in the right direction.

I am so hyped for this, y'all have no idea. Well, maybe Priscellie does, but she's a special case.I'm pretty excited as well. Alera was conceived on a bet. Jim has grown a lot as a writer since Storm Front. I am anxious to read a series written by a fully powered up Jim Butcher.

Now witness the firepower of this fully armed and operational battle author!

Ulfgeir and Fox, Thank you for your recommendations. I will get to those after I finish David Eddings' stuff (or at least those things related to The Belgariad universe).

There's a guy who lives near me with two (so far), I think self published, steam punk novels. His name is Chris Braak, check out his web site (I'll link later) they're pretty good.

I haven't seen these. I will check them out. Thanks for the recommendation.

I haven't read any steampunk books and read this one without knowing that it was specifically in that genre. I thought it was pretty interesting - worth reading. (Its hard to recommend books with Jim Butcher as the background standard to meet.) It is not a series though; its just the one book.
I am excited about this new series. I love the idea of steam punk but, like many here, I have not found any that I thought was excellent. Most that I have read gets too heavy handed (for me) with their social commentary rather than concentrating on telling a good story first. I am really looking forward to seeing what Jim does. I would second Ulfgeir's recommendations as two of the better steam punk stories that I have read.Quote[

You wouldn't have. I only know of him because our mothers were in a knitting group together.
For those wanting steampunk recommendations, I've highly enjoyed Devon Monk's AGE OF STEAM series—a mashup of steampunk, fantasy (magic and werewolves and the like), and western. The first book is titled DEAD IRON, and it's a blast. I've also enjoyed Chris Wooding's RETRIBUTION FALLS.Wow, great, thanks! :)
The website I review books and comics for has an "Intro to the Genre" steampunk list that you could look at for books: http://www.rantingdragon.com/top-20-steampunk-books-an-introduction-to-the-genre/
by Pip Ballantine & Tee Morris: Phoenix rising (The first book in the Ministry of peculiar occurences series)Ulfgeir - about this book, one of the reviewers on Amazon mentions something awful.
Ulfgeir - about this book, one of the reviewers on Amazon mentions something awful.I've read that book and have no recollection of that AT ALL. If it happens it's NOT on screen and not one of the 2 leads. One has had some bad things happen to them, but I don't recall it being precisely THAT. I may have a faulty recollection, but something like that tends to stick out to me.Is that really true or is it one of those "I'll make up stuff so people won't buy this book" things? I can handle anything, but that is one concept I can't handle. :((click to show/hide)

As far as I can remember, nothing of the sort happened in the book.

As for steampunk suggestions.....I am not certain it was TRUE steampunk, but Alan Campbells Deepgate Codex Series is one of my favorites. It is like a Steampunk series had a love child with a Terry Gilliam movie and this series was the product.I was wondering about that series as well. I only read Scar Night, but I had a horrible time categorizing its genre. That aside; I can't wait to delve into a new Jim Butcher world!!
(((Ru)))) It's good to see you!
Shear, I agree about the cats, but as Jim seems to like them (Mister) I'd say they won't be just villains.
HEY!! I hope we aren't getting the talking cats purely as villains. My cats are playful, humorous, communicative, relaxing, and when I'm not feeling so good they sit with me quietly and keep me company. Of course, to any skinwalkers out there who just turned into a rat or a bug, they're villains, all right.
FAIR PLAY FOR FELINES!
im 100% sure all cats are plotting to kill us at all times, and everything they do is designed to further that goal
As I said on the other board, never been that much into steampunk, but I'm betting Cinder Spires will get me into it, the same way Dresden got me into urban fantasy.
Also, seven-figure deal? I knew Jim's a relatively famous author, but to see concrete signs of that... wow.
Edit: Just realized that this is officially my 1000th post. Not sure how to feel about that. :o
Incorrect. That would leave them with no servitor subcreatures.
Welcome to your pants, then, Locnil. :)should I sqeal now or when we have a relase date?
And I too am highly anticipating Jim's new series. A cat mafia and steampunk? Bring. it.
*bounces in his chair* ;D
You doubted this?All the time
