LMAO- they're answering the phone at Mysterious Galaxy "Jim Butcher central."  Half an hour after opening, and I'm number 30 for the line.

My brother-in-law and I have numbers 9 & 10. The book store said Jim will be giving a little talk for about 30 minutes before he starts signing. I can't wait.

What's this about getting numbers? If I'm going to one tomorrow, should I call the bookstore?

Mysterious Galaxy is a numbered, ticketed signing.  With a purchase of the book from them, you get a ticket for the signing.  You can purchase them at the signing.

I'm driving down from LA and I promised a friend I'd get his copy signed as well, do you have to buy two books there?

You should probably call the store to order it and get a number.  I called yesterday, and I'm number 72, so if you just show up you might be waiting for awhile.

Cool.  I just called.  Thanks for the tip.  Sounds like they're expecting a good crowd which is great.  I went to the White Knight signing in Huntington Beach and there were maybe fifty people there.  Go Jim!

Is there any chance that someone recorded it and is in the process of making a transcript for it?  I only ask this because these seem like great times to get info out of him, but not everyone is able to go to a Q&A Signing.

I figured that was you!  Wish I'd have seen the note about the coffeeshop before we went home.

I'm sneaky, quiet, and hid in the seats. :)

*edit to add* I tried to video it, but my battery died about 5 seconds in.

So I was lying in bed the day Small Favor came out, having finished it earlier in the evening, and I thought hey, I wonder if he's signing books in California - I live in Los Angeles, so I thought he might be signing nearby.

Lo and behold, I discovered he was signing in San Diego on Saturday, so a friend and I drove about two and a half hours to get there (traffic was pretty bad as we got to San Diego). Man, was it ever worth the trip.

The Q&A was hilarious and awesome. Jim introduces himself to a round of applause, then informs us that most places he goes to assume he's going to read from his books, but he tends to assume his audience is capable of reading on their own - so he's going to go right to the Q&A. He then decides that instead of sitting on the chair behind the podium, he's going to sit ON the podium. He was, as someone noted earlier in the thread, wearing a "Hello, my name is" nametag with "Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die." written on it. It seemed like a very Jim thing to do.

There were a lot of good questions asked, and some very interesting answers, including the hints about the next book that have been discussed previously. I asked him two questions. One was how old Murphy is - he said she was around 30 at the start of the series, which makes her 38-ish now since eight years have passed. The other was whether there was any chance we'd get to see Lash again (as I phrased it, I've always referred to Lasciel/Lash, Lara Raith and Mab as the Evil Harem (although I guess Lash didn't count at the end), and I missed having Lash around). Jim considered this for a second, and then goes "I'm not gonna tell you!" in a sing-songy voice, at which point the whole store burst out laughing. I have now been officially mocked by Jim Butcher. I am awesome.

I'd already bought Small Favor, but since it was a numbered signing, I called up early and reserved myself a second copy so I'd get a number. I also bought a Proven Guilty so I could get it signed for my friend - which turned out to be the perfect number of books, since Jim was signing three (I brought my other Small Favor as well). I was number 107 in line, and my friend was 108, so I ended up right behind Valorclast and a couple of other people. We proceeded to have a rather entertaining conversation while we waited in line, especially when we got inside the store and started reading passages from random vampire books in very dramatic voices.

When I finally got up to Jim, I was complimented on my shirt ("The Top Ten Reasons I Procrastinate: 1.") and we commiserated about the fact that the publishers wouldn't let him make all the book titles really terrible puns. My impression of him before meeting him was that he was a cool guy, a total nerd, and someone who'd be a lot of fun to meet - and I'm glad to say he lived up to every one of my expectations.

I'll definitely have to go to Comic-con this year to see him again.

Yes!  It'd be great to meet some of the board members.

I saw the procrastinate shirt.  I need to get it for my husband.  I already bought him "I never finish anyth" ;)
Title: Re: Signing: San Diego, CA, on April 5th
Post by: elderbrothergruff on April 07, 2008, 01:46:06 AM
My notes.  I'm sure I'll remember more later:

.

UNSEELIE ACCORDS:  This was my question and I didn't manage to get the answer I wanted but I did get that the Unseelies were signed a long time ago and that there are about 25 baronies in addition to the main signers and that most people who signed did not do so with good faith.

MAC:  Second part of my question was how did Mac fit in?  He had a sponsor who put him up with the Unseelies as Accorded Neutral Gorund but Jim can't say who because it gives too much away.

LUCCIO/SWORDS:  She won't regain the ability to make them in the story arc.  Charity also can't make them because she gave up her magic.

WHITE COUNCIL:  A war amongst the White Council is extremely likely.  It would be messy and it would make things hard on Harry so odds are good it will happen at some point.

MOLLY:  Her apprenticeship will last 7-8 years so we'll see her grow and mature.  She has magic because she was born not long after her mother gave up her magic.  None of her siblings will have magic because it's been too long since Charity put her magic aside.

HARRY'S BIRTH:  Anyone born under the same circumstances as Harry could have had the same power he does.  In fact other wizards born at the same time do and we will likely meet some of them.

LASCIEL:  Someone asked if we'd see Lasciel again and he wouldn't answer but when I saw him for White Knight he said we would and we'd possibly see Lash again too

SUSAN:  We'll see her again in book 12.

POST ALERA:  Alera is going to be six books,  after that he's doing a sci fi series set in the future called US Marshalls

for sure, I'm guessing they'll have a panel with him so we should stake out a section (in the front of course). If there is no panel.... well we seem to be adept at line forming and waiting :P

Comic con *is* the Line Ride.

Last year, they started doing limited signings where you had to draw a ticket to get the right to wait in line to get something signed.  I am a-feared that Jim might be big enough to warrant this.  I mean... Go Jim!

Yeah, I considered going down for Warren Ellis last year, but between the fact that he was doing signings on Friday (I think) and the fact that it was a lottery to even stand in line, I gave up.

Maybe if something similar happens with Jim this year, we could finagle a way for forum members to get line tickets? ;D
Title: Re: Signing: San Diego, CA, on April 5th

That would be sweet.  But what would be criteria.  Number of Post, Length of Time on Site?

I know.  Every Member of the site that donates a small amount to the site ( 5 buck at least) could get a little pass or sticker that lets them get to the front of Jim's line that way we would help the site, get to the front of the line and Jim would know who we are!!  It's a win-win for everybody!! :D

Whadya think?

He didn't say, but if I had to guess, he'll probably have panels on Friday and Saturday, as that's when that sort of panel is usually held.

I can keep an eye out when the final program is released, but that won't be for awhile.

i remember well... i stood in line for an hour or more for stargate tickets and got nothing from the lottery >_<

Jim though, we shall see. :)

At the very least we should organize a Fan thing that they have now. It was new last year and is put on by fan organizations (i'd say the forum counts for sure). Ben Browder and several producers showed up at the stargate one and signed stuff, talked with us, took pics etc. Definitely should look into it!

I didn't know that they had fan events.  That's really cool.

Husband went through the Stargate line for me like 3 times.  (I was in the Ballroom 20 line.)  Nada.

such a bummer.... my friend and i went through once than ran to the ballroom to get seats, I may have seen you and never known :D

The fan events were brand new last year, so not a lot of people knew about them. It was great though, hope they have them again this year
