DF Spoilers / Re: Thomas's cure: Bonea or Lhea?
« on: March 06, 2021, 07:23:35 PM »
I don't think Thomas becomes a Winter Knight.  Either a KOTC, or Summer Knight which could could create some problems for Dresden as Winter Knight
I could see Thomas becoming Summer Knight and that creating problems for Summer and Winter, who would then cause problems for Harry and Thomas, who would then cause problems for Summer and Winter ad infinitum.

On Harry's level of training/experience/competence or what have you, I'd say it's more a difference in emphasis than degree. As pointed out Harry's got/had Bob. This probably gave him information that most wizards don't have easy access to. He was trained in surprise close range magic combat without any focus items (blasting rod, etc.) by Mab. He's directly, deeply, and studiously examined Merlin's handy work. He's had lessons from a fallen angel.

But we also know that Harry is missing a lot of apprentice time. He was the youngest wizard for years. Eb barely taught him any magic. Harry had, at most, an eight year apprenticeship. (I think Justin took him in when he was 10. Eb taught him until he was 18). More reasonably 6 years. I'm guessing most wizard apprenticeships last into at least someone's mid-20's. We know he wasn't taught certain things that are traditionally taught.  Carlos talks about how "Old Ones" are "the last thing a formally trained apprentice learns about." He mentions that Harry's training wasn't formal.

Side note. Carlos says Old Ones are Outsiders that are inside, but inactive. ("caged, bound, and sleeping").

Also until Eb made a big thing out of it in Peace Talks I doubt that Harry thought it was little more than a vulgarity of the supernatural world, equal maybe to saying, "oh shit.."
I think it's implied that Harry has asked Eb, but Eb refused to explain. Eb and Harry reference previous conversations about it in PT (I think it was PT. Might have been earlier in BG).

Maybe a little worse but on that level.  So he'd have no reason to ask, he hasn't had time either to get into a conversation with Bob about being a starborn, or any of that.
But he's been called Starborn for several books now. He's had plenty of time to ask.

And that's the best argument there is against a third kid, Jim has already griped about the issues that Maggie causes with sticking to an outline that originally involved a childless Harry so why introduce another kid?
Because Mab explicitly said she wants Harry and Lara to have one. (Or was it more than one)?

I don't remember the expression of hatred, but I will point out that the other things he did were at Nicodemus' instruction and requests. Namshiel is a potent magic user, it makes sense to give him those tasks.
It's in SmF on Demonreach. Chapter 43.

Quote
Insufferable, arrogant little monkey," Namshiel hissed. "Playing with the fires of creation. Binding your soul to it, as if you were one of us. How dare you so presume. How dare you wield soulfire against me. I, who was there when your pathetic kind was hewn from the muck."
...
Thorned Namshiel was ranting about something. Practically foaming at the mouth."

They need to be known. Their stories need to be known. Have a place in human memory. The oblivion war is based on that and so is Mab’s involvement in the Grimm brothers and their book. Worship is one form of that, fear is another one. Fear and worship are not necessarily that different anyway.
They need to be known to be able to exist in our world. Ethnui was more powerful than Odin (discounting softer power like allies and being smarter). This suggests that being known isn't what gives them power. If it was, Odin would be more powerful than Ethniu. I'm pretty sure Odin is much more widely known than Ethnui. What do they need to be powerful in our world?

Well that zoomed right over my head. Merlin as the Conqueror?
Quote
I remember your pimply face when you rode with the Conqueror. I remember how you wept when Merlin cast you out.”
The quote can be interpreted as the objects of the italicized prepositional phrases are the same person. It's probably not an accurate interpretation, and if I had to lay down a bet, I'd be putting money on the Conqueror being William the Conqueror or at least not Merlin.

As for whether other deities can be capitalized or not it's really a personal choice more than a rule here or otherwise.
If it's a proper noun, capitalize it. If not, don't. (Excepting rules about capitalizing other than proper nouns, or, as my brother calls them, improper nouns). So it has been written, so it shall be done.

Exactly, unless you bother to explain just why one god from one religion is stronger than another. And often that ends up insulting readers or not making much sense, especially if it's buried in thinly-veiled preachings. Most author's ...
I was mostly talking about stories like Stargate: SG-1 where, in universe, the characters have no reason for claiming to be all knowing and all powerful except for the writers coming from a Christian world view that they've never given any thought to. Why would the Goa'uld claim to be all knowing or all powerful when both claims are obviously and easily falsified?

He led the attack on Arctis Tor, he designed the circle that held the Archive and he was working for or with the Circle.  Laid back seems a strange choice of words for a Fallen with that background.
Agreed. He also expressed more hatred for humanity than any other Fallen we've seen.

I wonder if we should wait a bit to decide.. Yeah, WOJ, but was it a thought out answer or something
off the top of his head when asked?  I want to see the evidence for it on the written page.. So far the Outsider Knights we've seen are powerful and scary, true, but none of them appear to match an archangel, who also has his own restrictions, not even close.  Or is that all a matter of perception?
Well, from a certain point of view, a kitten is scarier than an archangel, but not more powerful.

The last time a Starborn was running around both Queen's died.
...
Wizards aren't allowed to get involved with politics because Merlin learned the hard way that too much power corrupts (per woj).
I don't think that's quite what either WoJ said.

Something to do with how by falling they have permanently changed themselves. Almost into a negative version. I think it was in a recent WOJ how that their grace or something converts into a negative. It makes your argument stronger in some ways, because perhaps they cannot change because they never did (being mostly outside time). But that raises questions. Why are the Fallen given no option at all the redeem themselves? It's a central tenet of many religions. What does that say about the nature of TWG or the universe? Or is it more the fact that they are no longer really the being they were before and so cannot be redeemed. They are something else.
I don't know why it would be that way other than the real world explanation I heard of them existing outside of time or TWG being unwilling or unable to forgive. I've always found fallen angel type characters that can't be redeemed sad.

Uriel seems to suggest that the choice is still somewhat an option for him...the the consequences of course could be catastrophic.
Or it's Michael's choice that would cause Uriel to fall, not Uriel's?

Nicodemus seemed to believe Uriel could still choose to smite him, to judge him.
Or Nicodemus was just taunting Uriel, believing (incorrectly) that Uriel could do nothing, but it turned out Uriel was stalling to give Butters time to get the sword?

Then again...perhaps if they chose to betray (somehow) the other Gods and that seems like it would have been before that...but who knows?
Or that choice happened at the same "time?"

I ended those sentences with question marks because, with the information we have, it's pretty close to a coin toss for me.

What if the Angels exist outside of time but can't see past the fork in the universe where a "Choice" is made?
I'm not sure how that would work, but I'm not sure how anything "outside of time" would work.

I can't say for sure what he would be doing in the Dresdenverse but I imagine he is busy just keeping Creation maintained or some other ineffable thing.
FYI, that's what some theologians interpret the "and on the seventh day He rested" thing as. An explanation that God is constantly "holding" creation in existence.

Therefore it doesn't really matter how I or anyone else capitalise any letter in relation to the character...which is in a fictional book series.
The grammar nazi in me begs to disagree.

You're missing the point when you say guy with a capital G you're talking about the one above all. The beginning and the end the Alpha and Omega no limitations. Fiction or nonfiction. Not being antagonistic. Stating the obvious
I think it's only obvious that a fictional god or top god would be, literally, almighty if you're coming from a Christian point of view. This view always annoys me in fiction when dealing with a god or gods that are clearly not Christian.

The gods, top or otherwise, of most mythologies aren't almighty. The answer to "what kind of god would allow this" in that sort of system is very easily answered. The kind that doesn't have to power to stop it.

I think that Jim has been deliberately vague about TWG, and for good reason.  Anyone who watched Supernatural should realize how introducing God creates a rabbit hole you don't want to go down.  At most TWG should maybe have a single conversation with Harry.  Other than that I hope TWG is left vague, and mysterious.
I agree. The more definitive an author gets about this sort of thing, the more turned off most of the audience gets. It ends up being offensive or disagreeable to a large part of the audience or it's just done poorly. (Like when writers have characters that are "smarter" than the reader, but the reader is always a few steps ahead of the character). The only thing worse than a preachy author is one who's preaching the "wrong" message.

Seduce? Gross!
I second the notion.

I think Harry could take Shagnasty under the right circumstances off the island. I think Shagnasty would take Mavra in a "fair" fight. Shagnasty's biggest weakness is probably his arrogance.

That's referring to two different people.
Are you sure?  :P

But seriously, how are you sure? Even if you can lay out a bunch of rules of formal English that lawyers and judges would use interpreting a statute or something, you'd have to also say Corb was speaking in strict compliance with those rules.

I think that it's highly unlikely that Merlin is the Conqueror, but I don't think those two sentences make it certain. Beowulf, Vadderung, and Santa are the same person, so there's even more reason to be cautious about claiming they're definitively not the same person.
