I don't think the Council cut Harry loose so he can do "what's necessary" without having to follow White Council rules.  For one thing, they have the Blackstaff when they need someone to break the Laws of Magic.  Mostly, I think the Merlin and most members of the Senior Council are truly afraid of what Harry has become.

Unless, one of the Senior Council has some way of scrying on Harry to see what's he's up to, they can only base their opinion of him based on rumors and a few known facts.  I think we've all seen the list from the fictional Warden File assessing Harry's accomplishments and abilities.  We can add to that what they might know since Harry came back from the dead; which is scary all by itself, seeing as how the last guy who used to regularly pull off that trick was the necromancer Kemmler.

Harry becomes Mab's hitman.

One Fairy Queen gets capped by Harry.  (Karin pulled the trigger, but the Council isn't going to know that.)  Another Fairy Queen dies at the same time.  Would the Council know that Maeve did the deed or ascribe it to Harry even if they hear Maeve was the culprit?  I doubt we can say, either way.  Plus, there are a number of explosions in Chicago around the time of Harry's return.  Meaning Harry is on some kind of rampage.

Rumors may have got out that Harry worked with Nicodemus and that Harry is now once again in possession of powerful Holy relics.  At least the Gatekeeper would probably know this last part.  It might also get out that Harry worked with Binder.  Not that the Council could claim that Harry committed any crime by doing so, but it sure wouldn't help his reputation any.

Harry has his own personal army of tiny fae to do his bidding.

Harry used fire magic to kill some Fomor servitors.  Personally, I don't see how those guys can be considered as fully human any longer, but that's how Jim wrote it; so, it is what it is.

Harry and Marcone take down Ethniu, but Harry only reveals to Mab and the other non-human supernatural players that Marcone is now a Denarian.  From the White Council's perspective, Harry must have done it by himself with Marcone being nothing more than bait or a distraction for Ethniu.

Unfortunately, Peace Talks and Battle Ground didn't really give us much in the way of information about the state of play within the White Council itself.  I assume the Merlin and Cristos are still jockeying for position, while the Gatekeeper mostly does his own thing and Ebenezer watches with alarm; as Harry doesn't appear to have any other major allies within the Council.

I think the Council isolated Harry so that either someone else can get rid of him for them, or they can squash him without a trial or political maneuvering if and when they feel the need to do so.

DF Spoilers / Re: Who will be the next Blackstaff? (If Eb dies)
« on: October 01, 2021, 02:23:28 AM »
The unknown in this question is, "Where will Harry be when Ebenezer dies?"  If Harry just get's word of Ebenezer's death or if Harry is present, but so are a number of powerful members of the White Council, then in all likelihood the Council decides and either Captain Luccio or Warden Ramirez gets the Blackstaff.  The only reason I don't think it will be Luccio is because her fighting ability has been diminished.  The Blackstaff would make her uber-powerful, but it's a weapon that should only be used with great discretion and only at times when nothing else is appropriate.  So, I could see Ramirez getting the job in an attempt by the Senior Council to counter-balance Harry.

On the other hand, if Harry and Ebenezer are together when Eb meets his end, but no one else is around, that changes things.  I could see Harry picking up the staff and wouldn't you know it, Mab shows up to give Harry the most dangerous mission he has ever faced.  A task that even the Eye of Ethniu would be of little use in completing.  Now Harry won't want the Blackstaff, so I could see Harry getting summoned by Mother Winter and getting told that either he has to use the Blackstaff to complete his mission or return it to it's original owner, Mother Winter herself.  It doesn't have to be exactly that scenario, but it could be something close to that.

If Harry does pick up the Blackstaff, my prediction is that it will be a one and done affair.  As Harry is no longer a member of the White Council, he couldn't act as Blackstaff Dresden of the Council, though it would give the Council a new level of deniability if Harry did their dirty work for them.  However, most of the Senior Council would never trust Harry with that job.  After using the Blackstaff once, my guess is that Harry would return it to the Council rather than Mother Winter.  Then again, maybe not, I don't know.  It's just a feeling I have.

DF Spoilers / Re: Wedding day ideas
« on: September 27, 2021, 11:11:36 PM »
No one has speculated what Titania's reaction might be to this alliance.  The Fae are all about balance, so Titania must do something to retain the balance between Summer and Winter.  I'm not suggesting Titania would marry Fix to one of the Swartalve's, but she would do something.  Of course, Titania might not even make an appearance at the wedding.  Whatever she might will could possibly be done through Sarissa's actions or perhaps even Eldest Gruff, though I favor Sarissa being Summer's agent in this case.

I'm not entirely sure about that.
  • The White Council could boycott because Harry is persona-non-grata (and his two closest relationships are seriously pissed about him being friendly with Lara).
  • The Svartalves are likely still not pleased about the assassination attempt and subsequent kidnapping of the attacker, by the two people getting married no less.
  • The ghouls don't like Harry any more than he likes them.
  • The Denarians seem to be out after their SmF betrayal, and they wouldn't show anyway after Harry's involvement with Deirdre's death and Nico's loss of standing.
  • I don't see the Erlking caring for such things. I imagine he shows up only for what he has to.
  • Same for Ferrovax.
  • Marcone will show up even though he wouldn't want to. He can't let an event like that happen in his town without being a part. Especially if he wants to make sure he doesn't start getting cut out now that Mab knows about the coin.

So I think it'll be Winter/White/Summer Courts, plus River and maybe Vadderung if he's got nothing better to do, and Marcone out of necessity.

As I see it, this wedding; meaning the alliance between between Winter and the White Court, is Mab's idea and therefore it would be her party, even if Molly or Lea handled the planning in conjunction with input from Lara Raith.  Therefore, it would be Mab who would decide which major powers would be on the invite list.  So, the question to ask is not whether the White Council, Ghouls or Swartalves would want to attend, but whether Mab would invite them to send a representative.

Should Mab decide to make a very public statement by inviting all the major powers in the anti-Fomor alliance to send representatives to the wedding; and I think there is a fair possibility this would occur, would the White Council, Ghouls or Swartalves decide to snub Mab's invitation?  I don't think so.

One possible problem I foresee with this hypothetical wedding is this gathering might look a little like a combination of Bianca's Ball, Harry's birthday party in Cold Days and the get together of the major powers near the beginning of Peace Talks.  I would expect lots of creepy manipulation and everyone would stare daggers at each other, but haven't we already seen that kind of thing before, and fairly recently?  Maybe we could get what I wanted to see happen in Peace Talks.  Some major player from one of the supernatural nations is murdered and Harry has to solve the crime to save the alliance and his own skin.  It would be nice to see Harry get to be a detective again.

Assuming Jim's right about his estimates hopefully yeah.

Cinder Spires done by his birthday 26th of October

12 Months by jan or feb next year.

I hope that estimate is accurate, but it didn't make sense to me.  Jim said he was 40% finished with the Cinders Spires book and he hopes to be finished by his birthday on October 27th.  The first Cinder Spires book's word count was just over 188,000.  Let's say the next book a bit longer and I round that up to 200,000 words to simplify the math.  That would mean Jim has written about 80,000 words and has about another 120,000 to go.  If he got home from DragonCon on Monday Sept. 13, give him a day or two to recover so that takes us to Sept 15 before he starts writing again.  There would be sixteen days left in September and twenty-seven days until his birthday, so a total of 43 days.  However, I doubt that Jim writes seven days a week.  Even if I only knock off three rest days that comes out to 40 days to write another 120,000 words for a pace of 3,000 words a day.

Jim has said that when he is really going strong he can write about 4,000 words a day, but I bet that high word rate is rare for him and doesn't last very long.  Maybe a week at most.  I think that for Jim to finish by this October 27th he would have prepared a major outline for this novel and already know how every remaining plot element will play out and end.  This is something Jim hasn't done in the past, though he's talked about creating better outlines for future projects.  I suppose it's possible, but it doesn't feel very realistic to me.

Then Jim hopes to finish Twelve Months; or the alternate tile of Twelve Dates, by the end of January.  That's only three months writing time.  Unless Jim already has a huge chunk of that novel already written, I don't see how he can do it.  What feels far more realistic to me is Jim wants to finish the next Cinder Spires book before the end of January 2022 and the next Dresden book by his birthday on October 27 2022.  That seems a more believable timetable to me.

Jim made a post on July 25th showing pictures of his cat and dog.  There wasn't any message, it was just a couple of cute pics.  I guess Jim was just letting the world know he's OK and is still doing his thing.

DF Books / Re: Book 18?
« on: September 07, 2021, 01:41:52 AM »
Don't forget, he is committed to a Cinder Spires book first, or at least concurrently. He should be well into Olympian Affair now.  Though there have been posts they may be being written simultaneously.

Yes, Jim said something about writing both books concurrently.  It's something he's never done before.  I'd be surprised if we got the next Dresden book before late 2022 and it wouldn't surprise me at all if it wasn't until sometime in 2023.

Having said that, Jim made an appearance at Dragon Con over the weekend.  He did at least two panels there.  You know someone must have asked Jim how this new writing experience is going.  In other words, asking how far along Jim is with both books.  Back when Jim was having all kinds of personal problems which slowed down his writing on what became PT and BG, he didn't really give specific answers to that type of question.  He'd mention deadlines or hoped for finish dates but not much else.  If you go back further in time, Jim has been more forthcoming about his writing progress of various Dresden Files books.  In a few days, when a video or two of Jim at Dragon Con 2021 is posted to YouTube, I'll be interested in seeing how Jim answers such a question or if he just comes out himself and tells us how this new writing method is working for him.  Even if he said something like like, "I'm halfway finished with both books", that would tell us something.

So, I recommend checking YouTube over the next few days to see when a video featuring Jim is posted, to see if we can get any solid clues about his writing progress on Twelve Months.  We can always hope that my gut feelings about when to expect the next DF novel are too pessimistic and Jim is much closer to finishing than I am guessing he is.

DF Spoilers / Re: Injun Joe's death curse

I like the second idea, the healing one.  It seems like something LTW would do.  However, if LTW was fighting a Naagloshii, perhaps Eb could use his curse to prevent the thing from shapeshifting, making it much more killable.

DF Spoilers / Re: If Eb dies
« on: August 29, 2021, 10:25:25 PM »
Perhaps, but I wouldn't be shocked if Eb found a way so Harry would get them anyway.  There is Listens to Wind and there is Rashid, both might have access and get them to Harry.

I don't see the series changing locations, but I could see Harry inheriting Eb's place in the Ozarks.  I could see Harry visiting that place in a single novel and perhaps using it as a safehouse for another character.  Yes, Harry's new home is a fortress, but there might be a situation where the character Harry is working with can't be seen entering Harry's home.

Harry can use his amulet to use the ways to get there, probably in just a few minutes.  His mother would have almost certainly travelled there.

As far the Eb's journals and all of the older ones go, I don't expect Harry will get the opportunity to read through all of them.  However, Ebenezer's personal journal might be something Harry will get a chance to look through.  One thing to keep in mind is that Jim won't want to give Harry too much information, because that equals too much power.  Perhaps Eb's journals will be damaged before Harry get's the chance to read them and Harry will only be able to derive clues from them, rather than complete explanations.  Also, I could see the earliest journal, the one that supposedly was written by the original Merlin to be mostly unreadable with only a few words or symbols clear enough to make out, but perhaps just enough for Harry to learn something important from.  Most likely, only Bonea would be able to read them as they wouldn't be in modern English and it would be older than even Bob would have experience with.

DF Spoilers / Re: What will Eb do?
« on: August 07, 2021, 08:02:44 PM »
Been a hard week so I am a bit confused, if Eb tries an entrophy curse on Lara and it is successful.  Then she is dead right?  So what's to warn Harry about?  I can see Eb admitting to it, and telling Harry about it because it would put him in a tough spot.

You are conflating two separate ideas into one idea.  They are separate and distinct.  The first is about Ebenezer reacting to White Council (Arthur Langtry and company) intentions to get rid of Harry.  The second is Ebenezer's personal vendetta against the White Court and his desire to save Harry from the White's and what Eb sees as Harry's naiveté in regard to how evil the White Court is.  These ideas are only indirectly related because Ebenezer might believe that by killing Lara Raith he would (temporarily) be removing some of the fear of what Harry is becoming and the pressure to remove him.  I don't have much more to say about the first idea, it's fairly self explanatory, so everything else is about the second idea.

I have long speculated in other threads; going back to the original forum, that at some point Lara is going to demonstrate that she has learned her father's secrets and at that point she will no longer need to maintain the fiction that Lord Raith is still the effective leader of the White Court.  My original hypothesis had Lord Raith dying, which would lead to some type of White Court meeting or council to discuss who should lead the Court.  This would prompt Lara to use the "kiss of death" technique her father was said to have been able to use to silence critics and would be challengers to her rule.

I now see a possibility that Ebenezer will try to kill Lara only to discover that she has become immune to magic.  As of Peace Talks and Battle Ground that isn't true.  By the end of the next Twelve Months, maybe things will have changed.  Lara now knows that Marcone is a denarian.  She might not know which of the Fallen Marcone has made his business partner, but she can guess that Marcone now has some magic ability of his own to wield.  Lara is being forced into a political marriage with Harry.  She has long wanted to control Harry, but knows how dangerous Harry is and how surprisingly cunning he can sometimes be.  If Lara knows of, or learns of her father's immunity to magic, she will almost certainly want to acquire the same immunity herself.

So, if Ebenezer makes an attempt to kill Lara and fails, he would probably want to warn Harry about her immunity to mortal magic.  However, it would lead to the somewhat embarrassing confession that Ebenezer was; once again, attempting to interfere in Harry's life; for his own good, of course.

First, Ebenezer is bound to warn Harry that White Council is thinking of taking him out, even if formal charges haven't been made against him yet.  The second thing to remember is Ebenezer is capable of doing subtle deadly magic.  I doubt he tried to bring a satellite down on Lord Raith's head.

I could see Eb trying some kind of entropy curse on Lara, perhaps think that would even the scales for what her father did to his daughter.  However, should this occur, I won't be surprised if afterwards Ebenezer warns Harry that Lara is immune to magical attacks, which would raise the question of how Eb could know that.

DF Spoilers / Re: Could Harry become a signatory to the Accords?
« on: August 07, 2021, 01:55:37 AM »
Here's what I would think about.  I could see Jim making Harry a signatory to the accords, a recognized power in his own right.  The thing is, Jim wants to keep Harry as a medium sized fish, not a big fish.  So, if Harry picks up this type of power, it has to be balanced; probably by added responsibility to weigh him down, and of course, added danger.  Being one person, Harry doesn't have Valkyries, Hugin and Muninn  or Einherjar he can call on to do his dirty work.  Harry only has Toot and company he can order around.  I would wonder how this might gimp him.

DF Spoilers / What will Thorned Namshiel keep hidden from Marcone?
« on: July 17, 2021, 02:27:14 AM »
There's only two things that I can think of at the moment, but I won't be surprised if there are other issues some of you might dream up.

First, I strongly doubt that TN will say anything to Marcone about assaulting Arctis Tor.  So when Mab decides to get payback against the spiny demon, I doubt Marcone will see it coming.

I would guess that TN would rather not talk about Harry kicking his ass and leaving his former host a complete mess.  However, even though Marcone didn't witness the fight in the Shedd Aquarium, I wouldn't be surprised if he noticed how badly Thorned Namshiel's former host's body was torn up after the denarians returned to Demonreach.  Though Marcone might feel it's both natural and necessary to ask the denarian for some details.

I don't think Marcone ever wanted to marry Mab.. Nor do I think that she'd think he would add enough to her own power for her to marry him.

Yea, that's pretty much where I'm at.  Plus, the I don't think the Winter Lady can get married and consummate the marriage before her new husband would become really, really killed.

DF Spoilers / Re: All those other Coins...
« on: July 17, 2021, 02:03:24 AM »
Jim said they each have a powerup; that's different.

We know LtW's shapeshifting isn't just skill related
Rashid has his eye
Ebenezer has the Blackstaff
One, IIRC, is a saint/has access to faith magic. Martha Liberty is very tight with the loa; between that and her name, Santeria priestess is quite possible.

That leaves Christos, Merlin, and Ancient Mai.

Ancient Mai can identify a Foo Dog on sight; I would be surprised if she could conceal such. Plus she's ancient- she's aged, and the coins work against that.

Merlin and Christos are your two real possibilities.

I believe Jim has said that Ancient Mai is some kind of expert with magical constructs.  Also, if she had a coin; which I seriously doubt, I would bet it could keep her internally young and give her the ability to project an older version of herself to maintain her image and change to a much younger appearance whenever she wished.  The later wouldn't happen very often.
