DFRPG / [IoP] The Golden Scimitar
« on: August 19, 2010, 03:36:31 AM »
I am thinking of using this item of power:

Item of Power [+2]: The Golden Scimitar
Marked By Power [-1] (Allah)
Holy Touch [-1]
Bless This House [-1]

To use this item the character has to already have a High Concept that mentions Allah (for Marked By Power) and Righteousness (for Holy Touch).

So, I have some questions:

Could the character uses the sword's Bless This House to increase the strength of a threshold and then leave the sword behind and have the effect persist? Obviously the character is choosing to make use of the sword in this way so they wouldn't get a compel on the sword's aspect because they have been denied its use.

If the character also has Bless This House would the two powers stack like they would if they were on separate characters?

Holy Touch lists skills affected as "Many", but it only mentions the effect for the Fists skill. Would the sword do +1 stress when used with the Weapons skill? If so, would you also get the +1 stress when using Fists while the sword is sheathed?

Would Holy Touch's compel effect work when touching a creature with your hand or would you have to touch it with the sword?

And finally, I find this bit really vague, "This could qualify your touch as satisfying a Catch for the Toughness powers of some creatures." How are other people interpreting this? Does it satisfy all "Holly Stuff" type catches?

Thanks in advance for the help.

DFRPG / Iron-Willed Disbelief?
« on: August 17, 2010, 02:37:59 AM »
I can't believe that I never noticed this before.

Quote from: Your Story, p.375
Iron-Willed Disbelief (Discipline): Rooted
in her firm disbelief of the supernatural,
Janet’s mental stress track is determined
by her Discipline skill.

So...

Mind Over Matter
Through rigorous mental training, you strong personal belief determines your physical reality. Your physical stress track is determined by your Conviction skill.

Superb conviction and a -1 refresh mortal stunt gives you two maxed out stress tracks and two extra ( 1 physical and 1 mental) minor consequences.

Now, that just seems wrong to me!

DFRPG / Are attack Rotes worth it?
« on: May 01, 2010, 07:51:56 PM »
You can have a rote that will allow you to safely cast a Weapon:X attack for the low, low price of 1 stress but is it worth it?

The first time you cast it, with a clear stress track, it is definitely worth it. But the second time your 1st stress box is already filled and you take 2 stress. You might as well cast a Weapon:(Conviction+1) attack for 2 stress, unless you have serious control issues.

DFRPG / A gauge for Supernatural Sense
« on: April 24, 2010, 03:47:53 AM »
I would be interested in hearing how other people are using the Supernatural Sense power. Specifically, how do you gauge the power difference between Strange Sense [-1], Strange Senses [-2] and Broad Senses [-3].

DFRPG / Supernatural Sense and The Sight
« on: April 24, 2010, 12:47:47 AM »
I was trying to use the description of The Sight to gauge what you could achieve with the Supernatural Sense power. It seems as though equivalent of The Sight would be at least a [-2] Strange Senses power.

I had in mind a character with Supernatural Vision who sees the supernatural with normal senses (Alertness, Investigation).

1) If a Ghoul walks into a bar he would automatically know that it was a Human Guise (or Human Form, Flesh Mask) but would have to make a Investigation role to know that it was a Ghoul. This seems roughly equivalent to The Sight's Arcane Sense.

2) He could also, on an Alertness or Investigation role, see people with magic potential (or possible magical effects, like things under a Glamour or Veil). This is roughly equivalent to The Sight's Wizard's Touch.

Since this is more than one sense it should cost more than -1 refresh but The Sight gets all this and more for -1.

3) It would also be nice to see in the dark but I am not sure if that is thematically related to the previous two items. Possible making this [-3] Broad Senses.

Since Broad Senses cost just as much as Evocation or Thaumaturgy there shouldn't be any restrictions on your senses.

DFRPG / Foci limits?
« on: April 17, 2010, 11:29:35 PM »
The only limitation mentioned for Foci bonuses is the Lore limit on YS:278. I had also been using the column limit for Specializations (YS:182) for my Foci. Ooops.

Is this intentional? Foci do not have to obey column limit?

DFRPG / Biff's Many Questions
« on: April 13, 2010, 08:16:55 PM »
I want to be clear on a few points:

1) The Crafting(Frequency) specialization/bonus is dead. Crafting(Strength) is king. Long live the king.

2) Just like an evocation, a item with Block:4 can be used as Armour:2. Unlike the evocation, both Block and Armour both burn a use.

3) About stacking. I could enchant a Block:6 effect on a Armour:2 Kevlar jacket and if threated with a Weapon:2 attack I could choose to not invoke a use and let the jacket take the hit. If threatened by a stronger attack I could then invoke a use for the Block:6 or Armour:3 effect. When all uses have been burned it fails to jut Armour:2 until recharged.
