Author Craft / NaNoing again 2015 version
« on: November 02, 2015, 08:34:10 PM »
Tossing all the projects on deck to the winds, I am going to write something new to clear out the cobwebs in my head.

Author Craft / It is that time of year again.... NANO warning
« on: September 18, 2012, 11:36:20 AM »
Well World Con has come and gone, and the balloon fiesta is just around the corner. That means that NaNoWriMo is almost here.

Are you ready?

http://www.nanowrimo.org/en/dashboard

For me it means that I must kill off two projects so that the month is clear.

Everything else is ready the plot and story arc are done, now for the month of writing furiously!

Have fun,
Kevin

Author Craft / OK how about third person Inanimate
« on: February 25, 2012, 09:47:11 AM »
I have seen it done, but I want more examples before I put my effort out. In short I need to write scenes than no one can know, but that the reader needs to see to understand the story. Third Omni doesn't quite seem right for something that is third limited every where else.

Kevin

Author Craft / NaNoWriMo warning.... it is almost October
« on: September 27, 2011, 05:56:37 AM »
It is that time of year again, time to start plotting. Or at least to shake out those pants you fly in. Grin

This year we not only have to contend with LosCon, but Elder Scrolls V comes out on 11-11-11.

It like they are all out to get me.......

Have fun,
Kevin

Author Craft / Superstars, writing as a business, seminar
« on: December 31, 2010, 08:33:25 AM »
Okay,

This won't help a bit for your writing "tool box", but it may help in keeping ahead of the bills. My wife and I went last year, and are going again in Jan. Alumni get a price break, and it is all part of that networking thing. If any one else is going we can go do dinner or lunch.

Author Craft / Non objective cultural expert....
« on: July 09, 2010, 02:40:07 AM »
Sigh,
We have a contracted Alt history story, added into the mix is an expert on the culture in question, the problem is our expert is not objective. In other words the expert can not accept any view, except perfection for one of the historical people we need to use. It is not so much that we are reluctant to white wash a despot, as much as, the story needs the personage to be the bad guy.

A side problem is that our expert is a really nice guy, just he has a blind spot, and we don't want to offend him.

Ideas?

Kevin

Author Craft / Finshed a project....
« on: April 14, 2010, 05:39:57 AM »
(Large sigh of relief)

Just turned in our first project that had, zero words or research done before it was pitched. Total time from the pitch to turn in, four weeks. Five BFBs (Big Fat Books) of research, and five days total of writing and editing....

Now I am sitting here worrying.

Author Craft / A new (at least to me) type of writers block
« on: October 28, 2008, 01:09:19 AM »
Gack!

I have a short story almost finished, and I have had a lot of fun writing it - Except, now the plot demands the bloody dismemberment of over 200 of the players. (it is a Napoleonic war era sea battle, the hero has to kill the whole crew of a galley before the board and swamp the crew of his sloop)

Gack! Pthoo! Ick!!
I never have run in to such a distasteful mental sludge before. The meme requires a very up close detail description too.

I can and will do it but, it is like diveing into a pool of ice-water.

Author Craft / Waiting......
« on: April 15, 2008, 02:35:40 AM »
So here we are,
(Karen and I) with four projects sent in (one contest, one edited copy of a sold short story, another edit of an unsold but almost sold story, and an article on air navigation in the 17th cent.) waiting it out.
How do you cope with the wait times? More writing helps, but a lot of out future projects depend on the projects that are currently under consideration. I cant wear a hole in the carpet, (replaced it with tile) and the itch to know what is happening is killing us. (sigh)

Author Craft / Cutting with a hatchet!
« on: March 07, 2008, 12:43:45 AM »
Sigh,
This perhaps should go in the angst corner, but it involves writing.

We have finished an entry in to a short story contest, (near future, space exploration stuff) Story came out about 16K words, contest size limit is 8K words.....
Cutting every other word sounds funny.... We are down to about 12K but are still swinging the hatchet. We have already scrutinized every word for it's ability to advance the story, trimmed interesting but nonessential plot lines, and are in the process of sweating down each paragraph to it' optimum size. Our biggest worry is squeezing the life out of the story, that is trying to keep a poblano chili from tasting like tofu. any ideas?

For those interested, the contest is here;
http://www.ralan.com/contests/listings/baenmem08.htm

Note; If we cant get a story that fits the first contest our backup is this one,

Author Craft / Editing? paper or electronic?
« on: December 04, 2007, 08:46:26 AM »
Until the day we can produce perfect copy on our first pass,
we need to edit. My wife likes to print the draft copy and hit it with the "Red" pen, I do the same with a word processing program with the text color set to red.

This is not always set in stone, often I use a paper copy too.
So what do you do and why?

Kevin

Author Craft / Just finished a rough draft......
« on: November 16, 2007, 10:58:37 PM »
Well,
We just fished a rough draft for the GG, it is an all "Downtimer" (a person native to the new time line)story that follows the life of a construction worker on one of the new rail roads pushing out of Grantville. It has romance, corruption, espionage, and a huge bloody fight scene.....
We promised first look to one of the "Editorial Board" after that we will let Y'all have a look if you want. Also we will keep you posted on the storeys progress through the slush and review process.
Regards,
Kevin and Karen

Author Craft / Fourm FAQ?
« on: November 07, 2007, 01:00:23 PM »
In an attempt to avoid stuffing my foot deeper in my mouth,

Is there a form FAQ? Something that covers digging up old topics, answering your own posts, Quoting, top or bottom posting etc?

Regards,
Kevin
