Author Craft / Re: Who's going to participate in NANO this year?
« on: September 27, 2007, 12:31:32 AM »
I've read on KA's board where several people have kept their Nano draft and are re-working it towards publication. Most people see it as writing a first draft in one month and later polishing it.

I'm looking forward to October where everyone will be talking about plot, pov and just freaking out in general. Should be a blast. Although I may re-new my Celexa perscription before November arrives.  ;D

This will be my first year. *fingers crossed*

Anyone here have any experience they'd like to share? Kelley Armstrong is planning on participating and encouraging others to do so.

Here's the link:

http://www.nanowrimo.org/

The gist of it is that whatever you write doesn't have to be good. It can be 100% crap. The rule is you must write 50,000 words in the month of November. Many of the Shomi participates are using this wip as a way to jumpstart their first draft.

Well, I'm reading Driven and so far it's the two lead characters having thoughts about how hot his/her body is.  ::) But I was flipping through the book and I did come across one mild sex scene. Well, mild for me. I think these books are geared towards young women. And any description about these books starts with the word romance.

So I think since the bookline is new, it's probably still trying to find it's place. I think the covers would appeal to guys, even though the books have female leads. I think it would be better if the bookline offered male leads as well.

And last night I got to thinking how Driven reads like a Louis L'mour western. Only set in the future. Instead of going on a cattle drive through barren, dangerous outland and outwitting rustlers, the characters are going on a 18-wheeler drive through barren, dangerous outland and outwitting rustlers.

I think this review describes what the books are about. The italics are mine.

"“If Maverick’s fast-paced, genre-bounding novel is any indication, Dorchester’s new imprint, Shomi—which aims to hook a younger generation of readers—should catch an audience quickly. Maverick grabs readers from page one, throwing together romance, science fiction and cyberpunk. …It’s easy to get drawn into her world of twisting realities and shifting identities."

Alternate reality, a bit of sci-fi and cyberpunk. I can see it in the book Driven. No vampires or werewolves though. Futuristic stuff.

Now, if only I could write that kind of book.

Right now I'm reading Driven, one of the books published by Shomi. It has some element of romance, but it's in the background so far. I haven't gotten to the others yet, but I think one of the requirements is romance.

Come to think of it, my bookmark says, Shomi the future of Romance. I think most category fiction, that I know of, is romance driven and the plot (murder, suspense, etc) is secondary.

If anyone cares :p I've decided to give this a try and see if my manuscript isn't crap after all.

Anyone else going to try the contest? You've got until April 30, 2008.

I've been doing that a lot lately, all because of this damn writer's craft I'm studying. When I start on a book and I see bad writing, it just turns me off.

Bad writing in NY Times Bestsellers too.

And the first few pages of chapter one really have to grab me and keep me interested or I'll pass on that book too.  I now see how important it is to start a book off with something that will keep the reader interested and glued to the pages.

Try going over to the author's blog (most have them now) and see if that will pique your interest in reading again. Or find good authors in genres you wouldn't consider reading, like westerns or suspense.

good luck.

For anyone considering sending a manuscript to this, Kelley has suggested reading the three books currently out by this publisher. Since they are, to quote Kelley, "a form of category fiction" she urges writers to get a feel for how these books are written; i.e. if they follow a certain guidelines closely or if they lean towards romance or paranormal.

Just some fyi.

Well, I've yet to hear anything from the ebooks published author I was telling you about. It would be interesting to read her side of the story.

Mickey Finn, how do you feel about the con's willingness to allow ebook authors to sit on panels? Do you think the cons are trying to 'legitimize' eBooks by doing so?

I have to agree with MerryB. And Mickey Finn.  ;D

One the one hand, I think there's a bit of snobbery by writers concerning eBooks. But on the other, I wonder how dedicated the esite actually is when it comes to good writing and editing. Do they actually reject any manuscript or take anything? From the response I got from them, that particular person didn't sound too chatty about wanting to reveal any information on the company.

Need to get in touch with that gal.  ::)

Oh, and I'll probably be an older lady when or if I'm ever published. Or maybe by that time, eBooks will have become legitimate.  ;D

Well, on her blog, she says she and her editor there go through a standard three rounds of edits. just some nosey fyi.  ;D

It kinda goes around in circles, if you click all the 'click here' places. But it takes you to another interesting topic on character, so it's all good.

And, I like this quote, which refers to the toolbox:

"I had the characters in my head at the time of the workshop but found your advice brilliant for giving them focus." emphasis mine, but I have interesting characters, but I think that's what they are lacking - focus. Time will tell.  ::)

Take a look at Character Maps, Character Types and Story Types. Also Notes From The Writers Room. Well, it's all good, imo. One of the few sites that makes me think. Hope you can use it to develop your characters.
