Author Craft / Who's going to participate in NANO this year?
« on: September 23, 2007, 09:51:10 PM »
This will be my first year. *fingers crossed*

Anyone here have any experience they'd like to share? Kelley Armstrong is planning on participating and encouraging others to do so.

Here's the link:

The gist of it is that whatever you write doesn't have to be good. It can be 100% crap. The rule is you must write 50,000 words in the month of November. Many of the Shomi participates are using this wip as a way to jumpstart their first draft.

Author Craft / Interesting website about Characters
« on: September 03, 2007, 06:59:20 PM »
Take a look at Character Maps, Character Types and Story Types. Also Notes From The Writers Room. Well, it's all good, imo. One of the few sites that makes me think. Hope you can use it to develop your characters.

Author Craft / An eBook publishing site
« on: September 02, 2007, 03:12:48 PM »
Someone at the Kelley Armstrong board has three books published by this eBooks site. So I went there. Not sure if it's entirely romance, but there are many paranormal genres.

What I like about it is you can read the first chapters of the books. I figure I can study them to see how to get my chapters going.

anywho, here's the link. If you click on the picture of the book, it will take you to where you can read a sample chapter.

I might even consider sending in one of my manuscripts, if I ever get one finished. I doubt any author there lives off their royalities, but it would be a good way to get your stuff out there.

Anyone heard of this place? And would you consider eBooks as an alternate way to publish your manuscript?

The author Kelley Armstrong is recommending this contest to all writers. Thought I'd pass it along.

Several writers on Kelley's site are going to participate.

Author Craft / An online writing workshop - open to the public
« on: August 21, 2007, 02:32:33 PM »
Just thought I'd throw this at ya. It's two authors sharing their writing experiences and how-to's. Their writing style is very different from Jim Butcher's from his livejournal. But they have interesting things to say about character flaws and character development, etc. So take what you need and leave the rest. Hope it's helpful. They're taking down the site at the end of the year to write their own How To book. Every little bit helps.  ;)

And craft is craft, regardless of genre.

I got a good laugh at this. I instantly thought, 'Harry Dresden!' when I read it.
