Are the boards being extra-pokey for anyone but me?
I've tried from multiple computers on different connections/providers, and things just seem considerably slower responding for about the last couple of weeks or so.
-
A little bit. Sometimes. It's when I first try to get to the site. It used to be near instant, but lately it's been taking a few seconds to load.
-
Yes, but I've been using some rather pokey internet connections lately so mine could be due to that.
-
Hmmm... If I hit "reply" it takes anywhere from 10 to 30+ seconds for a new screen to load, from either home or work accounts.
Occasioanlly everything will be as fast as everything else, then... non-responsive.
I've opened tabs and had great response times from other sites while still waiting here...
Oh well... I'm sure its probably something on my end, but it seems weird.
-
I've had that too. I followed Priscellies note to go to google chrome and it helped, but the load time is still much slower than other sites.

Same thing here, I changed to google chrome and it helped but it is still slower. But I am also having weird internet connections here so it could be because of that ???
-
I haven't had any issues on my end. I'm running Firefox 5.0.1 on OS X 10.6.8 and the average load time for most pages is about a second or two. If that.
-
Depends for me, and not on the browser (between FF and IE at home, with Safari at work) and not on the connection (FiOS at home, ginormous connection at work), but seemingly on random times of the day. Most of the time, it's fine (1-2 seconds on the load), but at other times, it can be most of a minute. Fred said it sounded like the boards were getting pounded now and then, which would seem to be consistent with my experience.
-
I'm running Chrome, and I kind of get the same thing- sometimes, the loading seems kind of slower than usual. My internet is good, and my computer is pretty fast, so I don't think it's an issue on my end. Maybe the site's just getting more traffic because of GS's recent release, and it's loading up the server?

Pretty much what Fred was theorizing.

I'm still getting a lot of random slowdowns. Most of the time everything is quite zippy, but sometimes a page will take ages to load, and I've gotten a number of connection/server error messages. They apply across the board, no matter the browser I'm using, IE7 at work with a good connection, Firefox 6 or 7 at home with a faster connection, or on my phone. Doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to the slowdown/nonoperable periods--that is, they happen randomly throughout the day and night, which, unless the server is malfunctioning, doesn't seem to imply that the server is being overloaded.
Who knows?
I will bow to the better judgement of Iago and the likes of Count Shecknara. ;D
-
I've got random slowdowns too. Never too bad, but there are times when it takes a second or two to load three pages and at other times it can take a minute or more for the same task. I always use the same computer with Safari.
-
I agree, it seems random. Perhaps a little better with Chrome, but sometimes is really slow. And normally, is very good.

Apparently I spoke too soon. The site was down for me for about 10 minutes just now, from approx. 10:09 - 10:19 PM PST / 1:09 - 1:19 EST. (no trouble with other sites).

I've been having many more issues lately too. Of course, that may be intentional :) but I'm having them nonetheless.

Yes, it was down. I decided to take the hint and went to bed
-
It works better than a big stick. ;D
-
Much better ;)
-
It appears that the site was down for a bit over 15 minutes starting from 10:00 PM PST/1:00 AM EST (it wouldn't do anything for me and there were no posts by anyone during that time).
-
Yes, same hour, third day in a row
-
I seem to notice a slowdown here on the West Coast between 12pm and 1:30pm. This has happened on more than one day.

That's when the site does its daily backup, I believe.
-
I imagined so, but it doesn't happened before, at least, not at that hour.
-
Site was down again from around 10:00 PM PST / 1:00 AM EST (I forgot to check it until a couple of minutes afterwards) and the outage lasted until 19 minutes past the hour.
Thanks to Priscellie for the info about site backup. Hopefully this can be fixed, or at least shortened, in time. But it's obviously understandable that at least some key personnel are distracted by more important things for the immediate future. Good luck to all who will have to deal with the hurricane.
-
I don't think this is something that can be tinkered with. It's an automated function of the board. Is it really that problematic?
-
1 am EST is the daily backup time of the boards. In the old system, the backup used to take 20-30 minutes until we purged a lot of stuff from the system and moved servers (iirc), and then it took maybe 5. Maybe. Could be that the newer board software is partly causing the longer backup times.
-
I haven't been aware of the daily backup slot for the servers, due to usually being fast asleep by that time... :)
However, there's still the off and on slow response time of the site. Prior to the switch to the new software, the site was almost always quite snappy. Now, I'd say 60% of the time it's still snappy. The rest of the time, though, pages have taken up to a minute to load. If it's not an almost instantaneous page load like it is when it's running smoothly, it averages around 7-10 seconds to load a page for me. Sometimes I get error messages that the browser can't connect to the site. All of this happens during the hours I typically access the site, which is between 7:00am-11:00pm, so none of this should be related to the daily backup.
-
Perhaps is a problem of the time when occurred. I never knew the forum did that backup before. Obviously, it happened when I was not online.
I have no real problem with it, is a minor inconvenience and I only have to remember to say goodbye before or to wait for it to come back. Yesterday, it was off line for a shorter time, anyway :)
-
I take it as a hint to get off my rear and do something else for a while. By the time I come back she's usually running smoothly again.
Just glad I have a forum to come back to. :)

Pretty sure the recent slowness of the site is caused by the massively increased traffic in the wake of Ghost Story. :D

I've been having the same trouble recently, no matter which browser I use (I have Firefox and Safari for my desktop, Chrome and IE for my laptop) and at really odd times of day. Sometimes it takes two seconds, sometimes my monitor is ready to go to sleep before it loads.
Glad to see I'm not the only one who's had trouble. :-\
-
Still having really slow response.
Some things are a bit different - Usually the first 3-4 pages or so load OK, and then after that it just slows waaaaaay down - like between 30 sec and 1 minute to load a page. Does this consistently with both home and work accounts, and on different browsers...
Soooo frustrating! >:(
-
I've been experiencing the same thing. It's really maddening at times (30 seconds for a post to clear).
I'd like to offer my help in trying to get to the bottom of this. While I am not an expert on servers and net traffic, I do program for a living and have a bit of experience in these areas.
I don't know if I can actually help, but I do have the time and I'm willing to give it a shot.
