« on: June 11, 2006, 05:48:23 PM »
Hey, folks.  Just a quick note to let you know that we've brought another forum moderator on board -- our own Mickey Finn.  He'll be helping around the place, making sure stuff stays on topic (or at least splitting up stuff that meanders all over the place), and occasionally (we hope seldomly) helping us lay the smackdown.

Welcome aboard, Mister Finn!

Jim wanted folks to know that while he's working on finishing up White Night, the next Dresden Files book, he's going to be fairly incommunicado.  We're currently thinking through how to make sure that your questions for Jim get a chance to be answered but, for the meantime, if you're wondering why he's not responding -- he's busy making sure we stay entertained!  Your patience and understanding's appreciated. :)

DF TV Series / BOARD POLICY: NO STORY IDEAS
« on: June 01, 2006, 11:03:38 PM »
We're lucky enough to have one of the series creators on our boards and looking in on this forum from time to time.  However, for legal reasons, he can't look at any threads that contain story ideas.  In fact, if they're there, it may be cause for him to have to leave and not come back.

We don't want that!

So, as of now, I'm making it a policy for this board that story ideas for the TV series should NOT be posted here.  If you do want to make such discussion, have it over on the McAnallys board, so it can be safely kept away from the eyes of the TV folk!

Best,

Fred

Site Suggestions & Support / How to set up RSS feeds to the site...
« on: May 26, 2006, 04:22:05 PM »
EDITED 1 JUN 2006, 11.50AM EASTERN

Check out this post, which has instructions:

http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=25009.0

For example, getting a feed of posts from the Dresden Files Books forum (board #2 -- you can figure that out by looking at the number of the board when looking at the listing of threads):

http://www.jim-butcher.com/bb/index.php/feed.xml?action=.xml;type=rss;board=2

KNOWN ISSUES

I had thought that this allowed to do a feed of anything on the site like, say, Jim's posts only, etc, but right now it appears that the feature set is less extensive than I'd originally assumed it to be.

I have also not yet determined how to get it to pass through authentication credentials that would allow perusal of boards that people can't see without membership.  If this continues not to work, I'll open up the posts to be read-only, but no posting access, for guest users.

Author Craft / Jim speaks much truth

Jim got himself a livejournal account a while back and made a few posts on it before his writing schedule ate him again.  It's good stuff, focused on some of the fundamentals of the craft.  Check it out:

Codex Alera Books / This is a NO SPOILERS zone
« on: May 25, 2006, 06:10:28 PM »
This board does NOT allow spoilers of any kind to be posted.  Please direct any spoiler topics to the appropriate spoilers board (found here).

The general rule when determining whether or not something is a spoiler is this:

  • Did it come out this year?
  • Is it from a book that is currently only available in hardcover form?
  • Do I have any doubts about whether or not it's a spoiler?

If you answered "yes" to ANY of the above questions, it counts as a spoiler.  Take it to the correct board.

Moderators will not take kindly to anyone ignoring this policy, willfully or on accident.  Post thoughtfully.

Added April 6, 2007:
We now have a spoiler tag; use it whenever you're posting something with a small amount of spoiler content on a non-spoiler board, or if you're posting an "off-topic spoiler" for a particular spoiler board (for example, if you talk book spoilers on the TV show spoiler board, the book stuff should be inside a spoiler tag).

Spoiler tags when used properly will look like this:

(click to show/hide)

To activate the code, use the radiation symbol in the posting toolbar, or use the tags SPOILER & /SPOILER inside square brackets [].

It may also be a good idea to state what the spoiler is from, so the audience knows whether they can proceed or not.

Please make sure to "preview" your posts and make sure that the spoiler tag is working correctly.
It breaks down to this:
ON-TOPIC SPOILERS ON A SPOILER BOARD: Do not need the tag.

OFF-TOPIC SPOILERS ON A SPOILER BOARD (e.g., book spoilers in a TV spoiler forum): Need the tag.

IN-LINE SPOILERS IN A NON-SPOILER THREAD: Need the tag. Note: This supercedes the “No Spoilers at all” rule…if it’s in the tag, you’re ok. But it has to remain in the tag.

Some coding advice if you chose to use the Spoiler code:

Spoiler tags now work much like quote tags, in that if you use the code

Code: [Select]
[spoiler=book your spoiling]spoiler info[/spoiler]
You get:
