DFRPG / Re: Conflict with Campaign Style
« on: July 08, 2010, 07:23:46 PM »
This is a campaign/rules/style conflict.

My take on the game is that it includes everything we've seen; but that there's a lot of room for expansion. (i.e. Harry hasn't seen everything in the supernatural world...or the real world, for that matter).

One of the players (who's been thinking about being a co-GM) is big on Rules As Written and doesn't want anything in the campaign that's not in the books.

The big sticking point is psychic powers.  One player wants to run a psychic with powers not listed in the game book.  The possible GM/player is very much against this.

The power in real question is telepathy, a standard psychic (if not seen in the Dresdenverse) power.  With proper limitations, I felt that it wouldn't unbalance the game, nor ruin the adventures I had vaguely in mind.  He feels very much otherwise.

Primarily, I see the Fate system as allowing a lot of cool things for the players; of me saying Yes as much as possible when a player wants something (and explaining why the game will be better for the group when I say No when that's required).  Am I reading something that isn't there?

Your biggest issue is you and your co-GM do not see eye to eye. When I started my game. I said right out I was using the books and as much canon as I can but Albuquerque there is not on the area other than one short story about Ghouls and the Warden Training Facility.

So I said right up front I would be adding in other information that is not in the canon. Harry and his allies do not experience everything in the Dresdenverse in fact reading much of the side notes from Bob and Harry in the books actually mention that. The most famous one is in the Focused Practioner Template Section, where Bob and Harry talk about Chronomancers Your World pg. 77. Harry states he never heard of them. Bob replies that of course you have not.

Now that is not canon because it is not in any novel or short story by Jim Butcher, but the books states they Chronomancers can exist. What about Werebears? Werefoxes? Only weres we have seen are Werewolves up to Small Favor, but there are other shapeshifters just Harry has not met them yet. So your co-GM would ban a player wanting to play a Werefox because they are not in the Canon which is the books and short stories? What if I wanted to play something from Wanted, a Kineticmancer who can control bullets?

The biggest break in canon on this is this: No character in a roleplaying game is canon on a game based on other media such as a book series or a movie. The character created is not canon even if they are a vanilla mortal because they are not part of the general Canon of the story. When you are running a game based on a book or a movie like Dresden Files you are already breaking canon. You are running your own ideas that are not the creators in this case Jim Butcher's. Hell even this FATE system is not Canon it is is just authorized by Jim Butcher with his input.

Telepaths I can see existing just off of what we have read just Harry has not met them. I can see them not favorites of the Laws of Magic and the Wardens might even hunt them down to warn or execute.

That is the biggest part people have a hard time letting go of both GMs and Players that these games do break canon. What is nice is these books are up to Small Favor, those of us that have read Turn Coat and Changes know what is going to happen and can plan accordingly to make it feel like canon but in the end it is not.

I have run RPGs in the Star Wars Universe, the Star Trek Universe, Marvel Universe, DC Universe and the biggest trick is to let people let go of their preconceptions of what they have seen and known.

DFRPG / Re: How much of a spoiler are the RPG books.
« on: July 08, 2010, 06:22:19 PM »
Hi all,

I am going to pick up the RPG books, as I hope to talk my game group into giving it a shot.  I am only about half way through the novels, however.  So i was wondering if the RPG books spoil the plot of the novels?  If so, I guess I had better step up my reading of the novels!

Thanks All!

All the Information is up to Small Favor. The last two Dresden Novels: Turn Coat and Changes their information are not in these books hence the Spoiler section at the top. If your players are not familiar with the books and are reading them now then yes there are Spoilers.

DFRPG / Re: So... a change in the shipping date for the DFRPG books.
« on: July 08, 2010, 04:52:05 PM »
It's a mix. Sometimes UPS doesn't pick up all of the packages (though they often do), sometimes the warehouse generates the label much more in advance of actually packing up the shipment than they should have. Right now I suspect it's more the latter than the former, but hard to say. Rescheduling can also happen AFTER pickup due to weather conditions or other issues that screw up the ability for UPS to work at peak efficiency.

Or they really suck. Believe me, I have a list of their issues delivering this package and others from other companies. I order from Amazon, White Wolf, Wizard of the Coast, your company, because I have no gaming store in my area. UPS always screws it up. It is not just with you guys. The weather excuse is one of their biggest ones.

I know the business of sending out orders worked for a company that did that for years, UPS offered your company they best deal but they do not do the best job bringing the packages. You are hearing it now.

My father's business does not use UPS because they are late delivery, lose packages, refuse to deliver packages if a certain amount to be delivered in the area exceeds their unwritten quota even when the trucks are not even full.

I had to get a manager on the phone at UPS Corporate Headquarters and they tracked it down the other day. The distribution center here in my area took the package out of their truck refusing to deliver it for no reason. It was a three way call, the lady who was the manager of the distribution center could not explain why they took off my package out and refused to deliver it. The address was correct and everything. The HQ Manager could not get a straight answer out of the woman. He even commented to me afterwards he had no idea everything was fine. I explained to him this is not the first time this has happened to me.

It has not. I have had all this happen to me in Aurora, Colorado; Colorado Springs, Colorado; Kingman, Arizona; and now Thoreau, New Mexico. Same things happen all the time same company and only with UPS. USPS, DHL and Fed Ex treat me way better and deliver the packages no matter where I live with little or no problem and on time.

I would pay extra not to have UPS deliver a package if I had a choice. They are brown because their service stinks.

DFRPG / Re: How to decide if a PC knows a creature's catch
« on: July 08, 2010, 04:24:46 PM »
I think for a wizard, they would just know, because as you said, in the novels one of a wizard's biggest advantages is that they know things about supernatural creatures that others don't but any other character would have to make a lore check with a good (3), or great (4) difficulty with a bonus equal to that which the catch gains for how well known the catch is.

Harry does not have Lore thus he does not always know, why he has Bob to cover those things in fact it is mentioned in the character description. Molly the apprentice knows less than Harry.

I would think depending on the template and concept it would make it easier on the Ladder for the character being a Wizard to know than lets say a Lycanthrope or a were as example. Harry for instance on the things he does know has to tell Billy what the catch is because Billy and his pack do not know of these things.

That difficulty does go down to the GM and players. Some aspects might effect this as well Loves Old Legends and Myths or My Grandmother Taught Me The Old Ways.

Not a game I own, Scion. I heard of it. I think I have enough material right now. Probably a good idea for someone to use.

Yeah, Deadlands because I am running the game in New Mexico I have taken some of the monsters and concepts bringing them into the modern era. I am also using of the information from Boomtown or Bust for some of the history of the area and various towns lost or still in existence today.

World of Darkness: both oWoD and nWoD have some great concepts story arcs and villains to bring in. That is Vampire, Werewolf, Mage, Changeling, Demon, Hunter, Wraith, Mummy etc. I am using the Vampire: Kindred of the East supplement to create my version of the Jade Court.

Call of Cthullu, dear God how can you not?

I am using Legend of the Five Rings, D&D Oriental Adventures and White Wolf's Werewolf: Hengeyokai to create Kitsune. I am working on trying to make them more of Japanese legend not just Werefoxes.

She pointed out this to me last night as examples:
  • Elves (OW pg 42); Bucky The Murder Doll (OW pg 43); has The Catch [+1] is cold iron and the like.
  • Hammerhands (OW pg 44), the Reaper (OW pg 44); and Giant Scarecrow (OW pg 45) all have The Catch (Stacked) [+5].
  • Goblins (OW pg 45) & Elder Gruff (OW pg 46) is The Catch [+3] is cold iron and the like.

Lost my package again. Yippee UPS strikes a damn time again.

DFRPG / Re: City Themes: Denver
« on: July 05, 2010, 03:57:40 PM »
So was my group and they all varied in experience. None of us have played FATE either. I have a good bunch of players. I will say I was apprehensive as well with having the players help build city. After all GMs need to do everything right? What I was taught and every gaming system I have played, which is a lot all teach the same thing.

Everyone had different ideas and the city went a completely different direction and game any of us thought about. My players are all saying this game feels like they are in a Dresden novel.

I am going to use this approach in every game I run for now on not just FATE.

I use to live in Denver until 7 years ago (I lived in Denver for 26 years) and about 17 years planning games in Denver.

Not sure what you are looking for. I will say making the city with the players for my Dresden game was a lot of fun and left me with less building the city. Be surprised

Why not look up the historical history of the city? There are many haunted houses and famous occult backgrounds in Denver if you know where to look.

I would use the Wikipedia information on Denver as a basic basis.

I have run many a World of Darkness games in Denver from Vampire, Werewolf and Mage which pretty much covers most of the Dresden landscape. If you can find WoD Alien Hunger good resource for you running a supernatural game in Denver. Also the Kitty Norville series is written by Denver native Carrie Vaughn.

Denver is part of the old West some of that might be helpful to you. Look at the history there.
  • Brown Palace Hotel, how can you not use this old strangely built and old historical building.
  • Historic Richthofen Castle was built by Baron Manfred von Richthofen who was the uncle and Godfather of the famous World War I Flying Ace - the Red Baron.
    • Tivoli Center http://ghostlyworld.blogspot.com/2009/05/haunted-denver-tivoli-at-auraria.html[/i]
      • The high Vampire Religion groups that are in Denver.
      • Keep in mind Denver is a sprawl that includes Aurora, Arvada, Northglenn, Englewood, Centennial City, DTC, etc.
        • The Church Nightclub, the converted church that when I was younger was a big Goth club
        • Manitou Springs which is over 2 hours away, that being a big Wiccan Colony and all the New Agers there as well
        • Washington Heights, one of Denver's highest crime areas.
        • Denver in the 1920's was a major headquarters of the KKK and why there still is a high NeoNazi movement in Denver.
        • What about that Castle Building that is up north on I-25

That is just off the top of my head of some locations. Want any more questions or help e-mail me. Be glad to help I have notes galore from all my old RPGs.

*sighs* I wish I was making this up. They lost my package. I wish I was joking. According to UPS the package was suppose to be here on June 25th. As soon as I had a tracking number they found it. They had it sitting in one of their centers in CA for 8 days.

No appology just they will get it to me as soon as possible which they are still using ground even though they said it was suppose to be here on June 25th.

Idiots. I know why they call themselves the brown it matches what their job performance is sh..

DFRPG / Re: Baltimore and Other Possible Dresdenverse Cities
« on: July 01, 2010, 04:09:03 PM »
I've really wanted to do St. Louis. It seems like a historically important city, but nobody ever remembers it any more. I think there could be a lot of interesting aspects and stories to tell. Also, McCoy lives in MO, Butcher himself lives in MO, and Michael went on at least one Wild Goose Chase to STL.

Good City to use. Anita Blake book series takes place there. I just do not know much about the area.
