Title: April 6: Changes signing in Houston, TX
Post by: Priscellie on February 01, 2010, 06:40:41 PM
4/6/2010, 6:30PM

MURDER BY THE BOOK
2342 Bissonnet St
Houston, TX 77005

http://www.murderbooks.com/
Reading and signing.

Anne of Murder By the Book says:

"I just wanted to let you know that we are doing something special as part of the Changes signing at Murder By the Book in Houston on April 6th. We will be doing a trivia contest, with two questions from each of the Dresden File books (not including Changes since it will just be released that day).  The highest scorers and/or the people with the first two correct forms will win a LARP-ing sword, as if Harry was making them the guardian of one of the Swords of the Cross."

Sounds fun!  Read up, folks!

Can't wait.  My favorite book store, about a mile from my house and the first place I saw Jim.  Many great places to eat after?

Aww, man, it's on a Tuesday or somesuch. And I'm in New Braunfels, which isn't exactly next door to Houston (although doable on a non-school/work night).

/huge sigh.

Lucky you, Vijay, to live so close.  I'm way out past Highway 6 so I usually get there super early to miss the traffic coming into town. I'll see you there. I'll be the one most likely wearing purple and in the front row.

Yeah, good to come early as parking will not be easy and I have to deal with the Kirby construction traffic a lot. It will be cool to see who other members are.

WHY JIM WHY?  I mean Houston is a nice place and everything, but couldn't you consider just once making the Dallas/Ft. Worth area part of you route?  I mean there's this Legacy book store in Plano that attracts the likes of Stephen J. Cannell and Sarah Palin (like her or not she's a pretty big celebrity) on their book tours.  I just wish just once you got around to north Texas, we miss you over here.  I for one could never make a 6 hour drive south on a Tuesday.  :'(

I went there for another book signing last fall.  It doesn't have a huge area for the book signing so it will pack in.  I got there real early last time but I was glad I did.  I wasn't one that had to stand against a bookcase.  That bookstore is so cool!

Its not really that long a drive from Huntsville, I used to do it all the time when I lived up there. Of course I would listen to audio books on the way down, that might have made the drive easier.   :D

Also, SlimMason, that's only an hour away, from Huntsville to Houston. You should totally do it.

Are people gonna do a hotel thing or just going there and back the same day? If I do this, I will be coming up the night before. Might be easier if people want to meet up for dinner the night before than try on the day. Or maybe breakfast, I might not leave Austin till late...

I got to meet Jim in Dallas last year at the ConDFW at the Crowne Plaza. He was here with David Weber. They both signed my books. I do wish he would hit Dallas again this year though. He was very nice.

How about lunch that day?  It's what we did in Independence last year, then all went sorta en masse to the bookstore, which (in retrospect) probably looked like an invasion.  A geek invasion, but still...

If I recall correctly, everyone interested from the forum starts exchanging cell phone #s and then we pick one local (I nominate Landing) to find a spot that is close to the bookstore but can reasonably feed the most people, keeping in mind affordability and the vast differences in food preferences.

Then that all gets scrapped an everyone starts frantically calling everyone else and no one knows what the heck is going on.  ;)

Depending on the weather, there's a Goode BBQ* right up the street. They're kinda famous. It's across the street from the Demon Disco Armadillo. ( http://blogs.sun.com/ruud/resource/Houston/armadillo.jpg and http://www.thearmadillopalace.com/ ) (Yes, those eyes glow red at night)

And a Burger King ;)

I don't get off work til 1pm that day (have to go back at 9pm, unless my boss says I can make up the time, which she likely will), so I can't make lunch.

A late lunch/early dinner?

If the signing starts at 6:30 pm, what time is a good time to be at the bookstore?

We can work backwards from there to figure out what time to start dinner.  Maybe start at 2 or something and then just let people scraggle in?

Dudette! You live in the lap of luxury.

I'll stand out in the group. You all see my picture.*

Plus I'll be in a vest and likely a bowler. With a pocket watch.

People I've met before: It's been a while, and my memory is sucky until I really get to know you. So please don't be offended if I can't place your board name to your face. There are people I've known for years at cons whose names I can't put with the face.

*Well, normally. As I post this, my pic seems to have disappeared.

Is it the lap of luxury?  Sweet!  I just like the thought of being able to roll out of bed and wander around high-end department stores where I would never actually buy anything as a vacation.  ;)

If I were to get a hotel off a service like hotwire, that doesn't give an exact location until you book, would booking in an area labled "Houston Galleria Area Hotel" be a safe bet?

That's what we did, AD.  It's hard to judge the distance between the Galleria and the site of the signing but being close to the Galleria definitely has other perks and it looks to be about as close as anything else.

Considering 2008 turn out, parking, traffic I would say be at MBTB by 5:30.  There are many good lunch places (depending what time we meet?) within a few minutes.  I'd be happy to send out some suggestions if people give preferences (I don't eat fast food and am vegetarian but open to anything)?  A lot of places have buffet's until like 2:00pm.

If anyone is looking to kill some time an needs suggestions I'd be happy to help.  Nice shopping, Half Price Books, dessert places, etc. in nearby Rice Village if looking to kill some time.  There's a nice movie theater about five minutes away.  We are members of really nice museums (Menil, MFA, Natural Science) and the Zoo which are within 10 minutes of MBTB.

Although the store opens at 10 earlier phone orders (I've called like 9:45) are taken (with credit card payment).  So, I suggest calling early and picking up the book later to save time in line (last time MBTB said one could have 3 items signed on the first pass; groupings of 10).

This sounds great, Vijay.  I think a good start is the most variety of foods with adequate seating at a reasonable price.  Last time we met up at a Chipotle, the food was good but there wasn't really a lot of seating.  Maybe something that can handle a decent sized group (something like an Applebees) or even a buffet-style place?

My parents used to stay at the Westin when they'd come to Houston to visit.  Its a very nice hotel.  The view from the side with the fountain is pretty.

I am getting excited to see it!  Can't give Themo a scooby snack *quite* yet for picking it out, I am kinda difficult and would hate to reward him too soon.  ;)

Off the top of my head nearby with decent food, seating and moderately priced include:
Star Pizza:  http://www.starpizza.net/home1.htm
100% Taquito or Lupe Tortilla’s (tex-mex): http://100taquito.com/eng.html
Houston’s (American):  http://www.hillstone.com/pdf_menus/houstons/Houstons_Kirby.pdf
Amazon Grille:  http://www.cordua.com/cordua.cfm?a=cms,c,8,4,46
Picnic (sandwiches):  http://www.picnicboxlunches.com/
I can make more suggestions if people are more specific preferences and time to meet (some places close 2-5).

Star Pizza's a good choice. So's the BBQ place mentioned above, withing walking distance of MBTB.

If you want GOOD, there's the Black Walnut: http://www.blackwalnutcafe.com/

Or D'Amico's: http://www.damico-cafe.com/  (right next door to the above)

Then there's the Hobbit Cafe.....http://houston.citysearch.com/profile/9953692/houston_tx/hobbit_cafe.html

And Becks for the best burgers around: http://www.yelp.com/biz/becks-prime-houston-4

PS: The Galleria's about 5-10 mins away from the bookstore...sans traffic. Plan for 30, just to be safe.

Not long but would have to use crosswalks with lights as no bridge.  If meeting before 4:00pm driving should be worth it.

Cool. I just don't like to drive when others are on the road in cities. It's like I can play in the sand box just fine, it is only when those other kids show up and take up too much space with their toys.....stupid toys! They don't even know how to play with them right!

If a few minor things had been different I would have been a New Yorker....at least for a time.

Before venue I think we should decide a lunch time.  Like 3:30pm (then directly to store) or a convenient/specific start time between 11:30-1:30?  People can straggle in and stay at lunch as long as they like.  I am fine with 1:00pm but open.

I probably couldn't show up until 3:30 no matter what time it starts and somewhere within walking distance of the bookstore would be great.

Most of the listed places are within 15 minute walk.

Is 2:00 early enough then?  Certainly gives time for the early birds to arrive, eat, socialize, set up shop before we head over to the bookstore.

Okay...now comes the hard part.  We've got all sorts of lovely choices.  (I kinda liked the Italian Deli place myself, but it looks like seating may be an issue?) but someone needs to PICK A PLACE.  :D  ;)

I know.  But it must be done.

Yes, D'Amico's may not be suited for 20+ and 2 is early enough.  I vote Star Pizza: good reputation, some may arrive early and enjoy buffet until 2, latecomers can just order to their tastes/share whenever, and large/easily expandable seating.  They said call 15 min before with group number and they'll arrange.  Regardless of venue I suggest tallying arrival times and numbers?  Me and another member (2) at 1:00.

This pizza place sounds good to me, I'll have to do some planing before I can say when I would be able to show up. I might get off a bit earlier if I ask nicely.

My boss had a moment of insanity and became nice and let me have the time off. YAY!!!
Still need to find a hotel though for less than 100. The ones near the bookstore are all Marriotts. :P

Any suggestions?

AH HA!  I had posted it in the wrong thread for some reason.  I blame excitement.

It looked like this:

I can bring a handycam to at least record Jim's reaction to Landing's super awesome sweet secret surprise present (that I know what it is and I ain't tellin').

And we're always good for pizza, so add Themo and I to the list around 2-ish?  I'm guessing.  Themo can correct me if I'm wrong.  Not that I ever am.

It stashes neatly in my backseat. :) In the trunk if necessary because of extra carbon units.

Headcount is at least +3 for me, might be +4, should know by end of week. Does there happen to be a decent theater near the book store? We were planning on arriving around mid-day to "get our number" and then kill some time seeing Clash of the Titans. ;)

I'll be bringing three with me from the Beaumont area.

I haven't checked with MBTB yet, so... How does it work getting a signed book there? Do you have to order ahead? Do you show up, pay, and get your number to stand in line at the event?
Title: Re: April 6: Changes signing in Houston, TX
Post by: *V* on March 31, 2010, 12:32:35 AM
MBTB doesn't have an online store.  The last time I went to a signing there I emailed them and David was very nice and put aside a book for me.  When I got there I paid for it (as well as a couple others - I go a little crazy in a bookstore) and was assigned my number.  I had gotten there really early so I sat down in one of the chairs and read my book while I waited.  Next door to them is a coffee place but its not like a coffeehouse.  They sell coffee beans but only regular cups of coffee so if you want Starbucks or the like you better pick it up on the way.

Oh yeah, mark one down for me showing up!  Neither my husband or son are into books the way I am.

For Lunch, only four have said they can meet at Star Pizza around 2pm.  Since it's only a few days away maybe we should get the time settled and if people are eating lunch.  If most are not eating and arriving at various times in the late afternoon, Godde Co. BBQ (http://goodecompany.com/goodeRestaurantBBQKirby.aspx) might be best as it has open picnic table seating and counter ordering?  Star Pizza is good for large groups who are mostly eating.

Not sure what time we're getting in. I just know I have a hotel booked, the car got its oil changed finally and my brother will probably be driving. He's better at big city stuff than I am. He's lived out of state. :P Mostly why I wanted to bring him along. He has a sense of direction. ;) I'm also charging up my GPS and hoping that it will work despite me not paying to get new maps. I'm sure it's not totally off by much. Got the bookstore and hotel programmed into it already as well as backup info on my cell written down.

Not sure if we will make lunch, but more than likely something afterward. I'll have to see what my brother wants to do.

Is Priscilla going to be there? I'm curious. Then I can wear the "White Collar" shirt I won so people will know who I am.  ::)

Since only a few can meet in the afternoon at various times Star Pizza might not be best.  I would concur with the Godde Co. BBQ suggestion ((http://goodecompany.com/goodeRestaurantBBQKirby.aspx) ) so people can arrive whenever, not eat and walk to store.

It says it has limited inside seating?  And I'm assuming the outside picnic seating allows smoking?  I'm sorry, I can't go anywhere where there is smoking, even if it is outside.  My allerigies to cigarette smoke are bad enough that it makes it uncomfortable to sit and forget about eating, I'd be too sick.

Edited to add: no worries Bookie, I *will* be taking notes.

Actually, most of the seating is outside on a covered porch. Weather's supposed to be decent, so that's not an issue. Don't know if smoking is allowed. Inside seating is...crowded, but not likely to be full in the middle of the afternoon.

It's not a short walk, btw. Is IS within walking distance, unless you're from LA.

Sadly, despite being from Dallas, Priscellie will not be there, she'll still be in NYC. So don't assume that the girl I'll be with will be her in cosplay. She's good, but not THAT good.

You may want to call them first, I have no idea. The people running the store are very very cool, but on the other hand, they may have that rule in place to protect their livelihood.

Ah...from the website:
Quote
Our Event Signing Policies: If you're attending one of our events for the first time, please read carefully so there will be no misunderstandings...

When attending one of MURDER BY THE BOOK's signing events, please keep the following in mind:
1. The talks/readings are free. However, if you want to get any books signed (including audiobooks, movie memorabilia, e-readers, other items), the new book must be purchased from Murder By The Book.
2. You may always bring earlier books to be signed, but a limit may be imposed for authors who draw very large crowds.
3. For the bigger signings, numbers will be handed out, with attendees lining up for the signing in numerical order. Arrive early for low numbers.

When sending books to be signed:
We'll get THREE books that you send signed for every ONE copy of the new book purchased from us.

From 2008 MBTB experience must purchase any Butcher hardcover (even though policy reads "the"); can get three signed first time through the line; and didn't require a second Butcher purchase to go through the line a second time.  You can see my past postings for suggestions.

Okay, I'm leaving in the dawn hour of the morning tomorrow for Houston.  In case I don't make it back on the forum, I'd like to print out directions one last time.  So, Goode Co. BBQ at around 2-ish?

Is that our final answer?

(Also, for afterwards, we can chat at the signing itself and see how many people we're talking about to make that decision.  That's how it's pretty much gone down at the previous events like this I've been to.)

well my real name is Veronica but if you live in the Houston Area we could've met somewhere.  I used to use my paintball name as Forum names (Medusa) but since I haven't played paintball in years I kind of shied away from that.  I will be playing a 26 hour paintball scenario this weekend coming up so the return of Medusa may be revived.

I might be able to meet tonight.  Around what time would be good?  I think Rice Village bar, like The Gingerman, would be good as it is close to MBTB if you want to check out the book store location also.  Please do not choose anything based on me.

Mickey Finn's photo is here and I believe he plans to be at Goode Co. around 2ish?  I'm a scrawny Indian guy and hopefully can come early but likely later afternoon.

I will be attending this signing, driving in from Austin.

Does anyone have an idea on decorum? How many books are you allowed or encouraged to bring? I want to be sure and get what I REALLY want signed.

thank you for any assistance

Post by: Seiya234 on April 06, 2010, 01:28:07 AM
You're coming from Austin? So am I. Awesome.

1. Take 290. I've looked up the map and it's essentially a straight shot from here to Houston on 290.
2. Murder By the Book requires you to buy at least one new book to get something signed. It says if you buy a new book, you can bring something old to sign. Truthfully, I'm not goign to bother-I'm just going to get my copies of Changes signed.
3. It doesn't exactly give a limit on how many books you can get signed in person. However, 1-3 is usually a good number. Especially as there will be lots of peoples there.

Also-to make absolutely sure. BBQ place by MBTB at 2ish tomorrow?

Post by: Turanthor on April 06, 2010, 01:36:00 AM
Heh, cool thanks, glad I asked. Only been to a couple of RA Salvatore signings like 8 years ago, and I had like 10 books both times with him and it seemed cool.

but I was not the only one there with a big pile, so I didnt feel too bad. But it would be embarrassing to be the only doofus with an entire bushel of books in hand.

so it is near 290 you say? thanks, I am up north near the Arboretum, so that is easier actually, but usually 71 is much faster because of the speed limits. However, I do not know my way around Houston much at all, so I would probably lose that time trying to find my way to MBtB if it is on the other side of town. That town is monstrously big, every time I go there I feel lost, but then again I maybe go there once a year.

yeah I am in Austin, a UT alum even, noticed your Longhorn :)

Goode Company: I can't make it, I'll have to see you guys early at the signing. Work work work! But the place isn't big, it should be easy to find folks.

Seiya-

I have been looking at it and I think you are better off taking 71 to I-10. 290 goes through a lot of small towns and has a generally lower speed limit, as well as more cramped roads (at least in my experience). Looking at it on different mapping sites suggests it is at least a 20 minute longer drive and an additional 8 miles or so.

If you are leaving from the Campus area, I would suggest taking MLK out to 183 then merging onto 71 by the airport.

MBTB actually looks to be further south in Houston closer to where 71 hits than 290. If you are on West Campus, I would suggest Mopac to 360/Ben White, and that will eventually become 71, if you want to avoid crossing the middle of town.

Forgive me if you know all of this, but I have been driving in this town for 14 years, and in my experience it takes a good half hour longer going 290 than 71.

Plus, in little crappy towns like Elgin, they have cops posted up right at speed limit reduction signs and so they get you in the middle of decelerating. It is very annoying. Happened to me a couple of times, why i started taking 71 in the first place.

Me to them:
Two questions from the large contingent descending on your mighty store from the Butcher Boards...

1) You officially close at 6, and the event starts at 6:30. Those of us who show up early won't be kicked out for 30 mins, will we?

2) Is it Jim Talks/Q&A before the signing, or vice versa?

Quote
Mickey,

Hi! Here are the answers to your questions:

1. we do NOT close between 6 & 6:30. However -- and this is for EVERYONE coming tonight -- if you arrive early, please do NOT park in front of any businesses that are still open. Additional street parking can be found on South Blvd., a block behind our store. Thanks!

2. It will be like this: Introduction, Butcher talk, Q&A, trivia contest, then signing (lining up in order of your numbered tickets).

See you tonight! And don't forget: Patricia Briggs is here this Friday, too! :-)

It was a devastating day for me, I really enjoyed myself.

Both the drive there and back took about 2 1/2 hours, but I was excited to go on the way back, and excited about the event on the way back, so yeah totally worth it indeed.

I guess I got 4th? or 5th? in the trivia, a Burger King gift card either way, so that was fun.

I was queued up when someone asked him about Conan vs Harry, and it was awesome to hear his impassioned reply. Robert E Howard is one of my favorites, so it was just cool to hear him talk about his work so fondly.

If I happened to meet any of y'all, it was a pleasure :)

Landing, you got 3rd because you didn't come talk to to the Lucky Irishman like the two sword winners!

We had originally intended to stay longer (and me to make lunch) but the timing was off with work due-dates of major projects.

On another note, any Texans notice that when Jim Butcher comes to town, we have nice weather until he gets here, then it gets hot & humid? It's like the state says "We have an image to uphold."

I have a few pictures and a short video from the signing.

This one is me and Jim, he is holding my Pen. I have had a couple of other authors sign with that same pen! :)

This is me in line and I took a picture while the two ladies separated and I could see him. I was also standing next to these two most of the signing. I didnt remove the Red Eye from Jim because I thought it made him look kind of super-natural.

this is a short video where someone asks the first question of the Q&A. I was too busy listening and trying to ask questions to get much more of this part, and I was at a crappy angle to shoot footage.

I love the store and glad they got the business but it was even ill suited (parking, sitting, hearing, purchasing, etc.) in 2008 with half the people.  However, I don't think there are any better stores.  For Charlaine Harris MBTB arranged for the event at the downtown Public Library which has a large hall and parking.

Yeah. I had hair similar to what he used to have but had to chop it a couple of years ago because I went back into "Corporate America"... Fortunately I'm at a company now that doesn't mind me growing it out because when I do decide to chop it off again it will make another donation to Lock of Love.

First donation was 22" and that was because the lady cutting it didn't understand how to properly cut it or that I was going REALLY short with it. ;)

Agreed. Also, with all the people, I didn't get to browse for other books like I wanted. Sad panda.

Here's my pic with Jim. It's from my facebook as well, but you should be able to see it. :) I look like a creeper in it though. ><

You know I had a feeling that was you at the signing. The UT shirt and the UT earrings were what tipped me off.

I think you and I are the only two people who asked more than one question. heh

What can I say? The brainwashing has worked well. :D

I felt kind of bad asking another question but no one else was saying anything at that point so I went for it.

This is not short hair.

This is "I'm shipping out tomorrow" hair.

He had no choice!  He had to shave it off to thwart the spells of anyone who's gotten samples of his hair.

It was uber awesome getting to meet Jim Butcher at Murder by the Book - he's a really cool guy! Can't wait to read Changes, but still have to finish Small Favor then read Turn Coat first... I'm sort of taking my time because I don't want to finish reading them then have nothing new to read until book 13 comes out!

Actually, standing outside I saw him twice that I can think of. It was the shit that made him "stand out". ;) But yeah... I thought he looked familiar (he looks a LOT like a gent that I staff Project A-Kon with) but kinda shrugged it off.

At the release party signing last year in Chicago for TC, the question was asked as well.  I recorded the Q&A on my phone.  When I got home, I reviewed it to make certain of what I heard.  Jim clearly says, "Lash's story is not over."

Sounds like everyone had fun!

FYI - The TSA did not accept Aine's explanation that they won the swords in a trivia contest.  They made her check it!   :o

Also, if everyone who was there can check their books, Aine and Themo ended up with a blank one, which mean someone else ended up with Themo's (which I assume is made out to Seth).

More from them when they get to KC, I presume...

Well I have more pics but I don't want to be cruel. JB doesn't have a gut but I was sitting on the floor to his right and I wasn't getting the most flattering pics of him but maybe of his sort of profile and back of his head most of the time. Atleast I had a front row seat. Forgot to record him in movie form answering my query about getting kick backs from Coke for advertising them in his books. ;) He said "nope" not even from BK. :P

The trivia film isn't too bad. I had to convert it from QT so it wasn't a huge file. I might put it up on my photobucket depending. I need to figure out a good place. I have YouTube but they're all about copyright crap so I don't know about them anymore. I don't wanna have to take a chance they take it down for some stupid reason even though I'm pretty sure I can post it. It's just Jim reading the questions.

That was my first time going to a book signing - any signing actually - and it was Awesome.   Meeting everyone was great, but meeting and then tying against Jim in Rock, Paper, Scissors was the highlight for me.  Thanks again to vjay for the picture.  And thanks to everyone for not taping me to the ground.  Nor killing me.  That would`ve put a dampener on things.

Aine - I Still haven`t found the Incident in Indianapolis thread you were telling me about.  Would one of y`all throw me a bone and link it?

Landing carved a map of Alera that he gave to Jim, and it even outclassed Rock, Paper, Scissors.  Anyone who hasn`t seen that -- should.

PS: Hey again to ArarisDresden and Scarecrow.

(today Bookie jumped on a bungee trampoline and Mystic rode a carosel.  Discuss. ;) )

I won't be able to post up the video 'til I get home, but I will!  Also, I put the Q&A in the Q&A thread ( http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,11734.220.html ) and was gonna post the trivia questions in the trivia thread.

Um... SOME of us have JOBS. Sheesh.  :P

Besides, it isn't Independence. It's the TSA and LARPing thread... I'm still developing the opening scene.....
All I can say is that it involves 6" heels, bells and humidity.

And the world thanks both Bookie and Mystic for the activities not being turned around... Mystic, kilts, and trampolines scare me.

Who are Bookie and Mystic?

Kilts and Trampolines just sound painful and disturbing.  Or like a phrase that ends vaguely with "and hillarity ensues."  Of course, painful and disturbing often means hillarious.  Especially if there`s alcohol involved.

I don't own a kilt.  If I did, I'd feel the need to Karaoke that old Dr. Demento song "The Scottsman" all the time. ...  I suspect I'd either get more than the one boy in an all girls catholic school, or end up singing the prison bitch blues.

Hey did anyone notice the German kid and his dad at the signing?

I was talking to this nice guy named Mehir (sp?) and I said something like "Manga are serials for kids and Teens" and the German kid (he was probably 16 or something, tall in a white tee by the cashiers) was eavesdropping and starts repeating what I said to his dad in German but it sounded like he was annoyed at my comment. LOL It was weird and annoying but mildly amusing probably cause I was running on fumes.

And to the guy and girl with the Michael Carpenter sign... *waves* I think you said you were from near San Antonio?
