DFRPG / Any mention of Redcaps in cannon?
« on: June 30, 2010, 07:58:54 AM »
So my group is finally getting to a Dresden files game. During an information session where we discussed character ideas and the world in general all four of my fleshed out character ideas where made impossible or useless to play by what my group is playing. What brings me here is that as a replacement idea I've come up with what I think is an interesting take on the Redcaps. For the life of me I cannot remember if they've ever been mentioned in the books or short stories. So I'm looking for someone to either show me where they are mentioned or enough people to tell me I'm in the clear. Thanks in advance for your help.

For anyone who is interested the idea I had was that being a Redcap was a job with supernatural perks like the Valkyrie, mortals who are imbued with bit of power to do the work. I picture them as being essentially muscle for hire, the blue collar killer of the NeverNever. The template I am working on is Inhuman strength and toughness(cold iron) and wizards constitution as base abilities, with two items of power: iron shod boots that grant supernatural speed, and a sling that shoots elf shot(breath weapon). Any thoughts on the template are also appreciated.

DFRPG / Getting the PDFs on my iPad
« on: June 14, 2010, 04:05:02 AM »
Ok I will preface this by saying I have preordered the books and the PDFs I'm trying to acquire are mine legally, I'm not trying to rip anyone off by doing this.

When I preordered the books I was using my family's ten years plus pc which i despise with a fiery passion. Now that I have replaced my broken laptop with my sleek and shiny iPad I have come across a problem. I have the PDFs, I have an iPad, the problem is getting the two things to meet, shake hands, and hit Mac's for a beer. I've tried all the free PDF reader apps to no avail and figured I would try here before paying money for something that won't work. I seem to recall someone here posting about that they had them on their iPad but that may just be my mind playing tricks on me.

Thanks in advance for your help and here's hoping it isn't a futile task I am searching for.

true, i just like the idea of kicking in a door and blasting loup-garou in the face with a shotgun of power loaded with silver buckshot shouting "Bad Doggy, sit!" maybe i watch to much supernatural...

Don't forget even Fix carries a shotgun around. Just because your badge of office is a sword doesn't mean you are required to fight exclusively with it.

But there is no sponsor per se.
Harry got help with the first access to Soul-Fire. But the source is only his soul.

Harry may have to buy the ammo himself but someone issued him the weapon. There is a sponsor, hence why harry can continue to use Soulfire. Ever heard the phrase "I serve at the pleasure of the president" ? this is "I burn at the pleasure of the Almighty" yes Harry is using his soul to fuel the soulfire but he only has access to it as long as the sponsor deems him worthy. If he ever does something to royally irritate said sponsor he may reach for soulfire only to find himself incapable of channeling it.

So you would get a Dept to your Soul? How much dept do you need, to be empty of your Soul?

Part of the dept Compels are your own soul, remember how harry is exhasuted after using soulfire? dept cash in. There are also personality depts (the book mentions you hunting a demon when you really should be resting as an example) and Sponsor compels (the angels come giving you a job to do)

I had one idea for an Emissary of Santa who had the supernatural sense of smell. People smelled like Freshly baked cookies if they were generally good, or smelled like coal if they were generally bad.

They talk about this in the enchanted items stickied thread. I think it boils down to Michael would have to "adopt" the item using his own enchanted item slots. And if he doesn't have any enchanted item slots they use up the makers, in this case Harry's

So would the taser be Weapon:0? It doesn't actually do damage...

it doesn't do damage but it does cause stress which is the important thing. i'd say a weapon:2 armor counts double. with a note saying that after the scene all stress is cleared from it no matter how severe.

See, and I'm a big fan of clay chips; I like heft.

Now i just have the image of Fred beaning his players with fate chips during compels...

And yes i would spend $10-15 for a stack of dresden chips.

I set up a thread in the Play by post forum where we can list our names for any potential GM.

DFRPG / Re: The First Law Question.

Also, on a system basis, it seems really unfair to ding a Wizard with Sponsored Magic for the laws he breaks with it (which clearly happens, look at Hellfire and Kemmlerian Necromancy), and then let someone off just because they only paid 4 Refresh instead of 8.

Not sure if he killed with it or not, but in this example i wouldn't ding the wizard if they were using pure sponsored magic to do it (i.e. in both those cases they are using the sponsored as a booster to their mortal magic. if harry every called up pure hellfire and lobbed it at someone i wouldn't give him the ding) Mainly because the sponsor is doing the heavy lifting, and it engenders a greater reliance on the Sponsored Magic over the mortal kind... which is pretty much the goal of every Sponsored Magic ever.
