I'm thinking about it.  Gotta make sure I'll be able to sneak away from work in enough time to make it from Louisville.

Yeah. I'm going to have to sneak away from my math class. Thankfully, though, I'm friends with the professor, so it shouldn't hurt any. (Besides, going to see Jim is way better than math! I'm not sure I could sit in class knowing where I could be.)

I think I'll be there, along with a few other women from work.

However, we are probably taking off work to go to Chicago the week prior, so a weeknight may not work...  hmmmmm....

I live in Lexington and only work until 6 PM, so I should definitely be able to make it.

6 hour drive for me, but I am going!   :D  How many books can I get signed?  I don't mean the same book, but the others in the series.

I'm considering the long drive from Florida.

I'd also like to know Jim's signing guidelines and any other information we would need to know.  (I work for a different book company, and I know we have our own guidelines for booksignings as well as following the authors).

A couple of friends and myself are going to make the 8-9 hour drive from North Carolina, we've all decided.

And then, a cup of coffee afterwords. =D

I used to live in Richmond and am contemplating making the drive out since I'm very familiar with the area and the venue.  It'll be closer to the event until I decide, though.

I think I'll bring all my hardbacks and some of the comics to get signed.  I'm suffering from new book withdrawal. :'(

Hey Caelana,
I have to get there by noon to check in for my hotel.  Is there anything to do for the 7 hours I have to kill before the signing starts?

If you are a fan of thoroughbred horses a lot of the farms offer tours and you can pet the million dollar horses.  Keeneland is a neat place to tour; it's beautiful.

If you like drinking, a local bar just put beer on tap at the tables and charge by the ounce.   It's all the rage at the moment.   There's also a local brewery, but I haven't been there yet. :)  And of course all the distilleries in the area.  KY loves its bourbon!  Woodford Reserve, Wild Turkey, 4 Roses, and Buffalo Trace are nearby.

If you like scenic stuff, there are many roads and trails and beautiful scenery.  There are some civil war forts, historic houses, a shaker village, and some nice parks.

There are lots of shops and malls and stuff on Nicholasville Road, where the book signing is.

There is an aviation museum, a horse museum, and a couple of hands on science museums.

If you want any more details about something specific I mentioned, feel free to ask :)

We could all nerd out and hang out at the Rusty Scabbard and play some D&D  :D

Post by: LDSman on March 17, 2009, 09:16:54 AM
Some of the museums sound interesting.  I don't drink so the breweries are out.  After a six hour drive, I think I'd like to try some D&D.  Be advised, I haven't played in about 20 years.

I know the book signing starts at 7 pm. But what time is a good time to get to the bookstore? How long do book signings usually last? Does anyone have a general idea about how busy/crowded this one is going to be? I am thinking madhouse myself, as he is only doing so few signings..Please advise... Vic

Try hotels.com.  I got mine for about $50 and am about a half mile from the signing.  Is it terribly rude to bring all 11 books and comics and tv series to be signed?
Title: Re: April 14: TC signing in Lexington, KY
Post by: Victoria/David on March 19, 2009, 06:42:47 PM
It probably is rude, but it will be alright. I am trying to decide if I want to bring my paperback Storm Front that is kinda well it got wet one day, and it shows..lol.. it was my first book, and it has been read repeatedly by everyone here in my house, and I loaned it out to, so it is in sad shape. I of course am going to buy the new book on the 7th and I also have the first Codex book to be signed too. I am not going to be greedy, unless 3 is greedy..lol.. I found the Baymont hotel for 56.00, but it does not have real good reviews, one thing I can say is if this is the one you go with request a room not on the side of i-75.. That is one complaint I keep reading about it..I am about 3 hours from Lexington.. So we are going to go in a day early to loaf around, because we don't get out much..lol.. with 3 kids..Anyone want to meet up for drinks, or dinner at a specific place or time would be great..Go to restaurant.com there are coupons you can purchase for 10-25.00 off dinner at several places in Lexington,, I got one for the Bistro at the signing.. there are a few others it says sold out, but there will be more at the first of the month.. you get a better discount if you are a Borders rewards member, so sign up for that first..

In the past, Jim has certainly been willing to sign everything!  Out of courtesy to the other fans, though, he generally asks that folks only get three items signed at once.  If they have more than that, they're welcome to get back in line for another round!

So three books at a time.  Good to know.  Thanks.
Getting together for a me sounds interesting.  If we can get enough people together, we can take over a restaurant.  Mua HA HA HA... ahem. ;D

I am game for a meet up.  There are tons of choices for food.

Me, my husband, and about 5 of our friends are going to the book signing and will go to the meet up, too.

As for hotel recommendations:  the motels on Newtown Pike are good, and reasonably priced too.  There are several, and it's a short drive to the book signing from there, as well as all the other places of interest.

Can someone more familiar with the area help us pick a good restaurant, that is reasonably priced? I know Cracker Barrel is there, but that is not everyones cup of tea. and a TGI Fridays..Even thou I live only a few hours from Lexington, I only ever went to the mall there like twice with the kids school clothes shopping, and not much else..When do you think we should all arrive for the book signing? It says the book signing and reading starts at 7 and it says on the bookstore website that the store closes at 10.. this seems like not enought hours to me.. I am confused...lol... Vic

Hi all.  I work for Joseph-Beth, so I just wanted to pop on if anyone has questions about the signing or Lexington in general.  A good restaurant is Ramsey's.  It has great food, and the best Cajun catfish I have ever tried.

Vouchers for Turncoat went on sale in Lexington yesterday.  If you are driving in for the signing I would recommend calling and ordering a voucher for the book over the phone and a event ticket is included with each purchase of Turncoat.  We call out the event tickets in groups, A B C....  Each group has about 25 people.  So the earlier you get your copy then the better your group. 3 books per event ticket is about right, but at the end of the signing if we still have time people are more than welcome to get more books signed.  Lexington store phone number 859-273-2911

I have ordered a few hardback copies of Dresden books 1-3, and found some great bargain copies of Small Favor & two of the Furies books on audio if you are interested.  I have 7 copies of Backup left in my office, and I will be bringing them to the signing.

I am a huge Butcher fan, and have read all the books, but not yet all the short stories.  I have worked in the SF/Fantasy section for 18 years, so if you are looking for more things to read let me know.

Ok, so I'm new to the whole book signing... I'll have already gotten my copy of Turn Coat when it's released, so do I still need to get an event ticket?  Can you explain more about that?
Title: Re: April 14: TC signing in Lexington, KY
Post by: BrianSFG on March 25, 2009, 03:23:49 PM
Sure, events tickets are used for a number of purposes for bigger authors.  1) We only get more authors if we have good signings.  The evaluation is based on a number of things: media, attendance, but most of all front list sales, i.e. the new book.  These are in-store sales, not from other places in town.  It's unfair, but that's one of the ways we get judged.  It helps that we are a reporting store to the New York Times and Bookscan to help get Turncoat on the bestseller's list for the next week.  One of the big reasons an author tours the first two weeks of a release is to get on the bestsellers list.  2) This also helps us take care of our regular customers first.  We like to bring in authors to make our store a great place to meet people and to hang out.  Most early line numbers are grabbed by our local customers.  3) This allows us to set up the lines in order of when people bought the book instead of how soon people arrive. This helps people coming in from work or other situations where they can not wait around for a long time.  ie kids, husband, wives, and other people who might not understand why you should leave work early to go see some author that they have never heard of.

But for your question.  Everyone can still get their book signed.  Without an event ticket you can wait until the last person with an event ticket. We are happy to let people who purchased the book elsewhere to get their book signed, and meet a great author.  We just want to take care of our customers first.  I understand if you can't wait and are going to get the book early.  I would say that we can still take orders over the phone, and each event ticket can get three items signed, and I know for a fact signed Jim Butcher books make a great gift.

Thanks for the info, Brian!  I think that all makes sense.  So if I'm not going to purchase an additional copy of the book, I don't need/get an event ticket, I just line up in the 'miscellaneous other people' line, correct?  I assume that line is on a first-come basis?

Title: Re: April 14: TC signing in Lexington, KY
Post by: BrianSFG on March 25, 2009, 05:31:58 PM
Correct.  Of course, that line does not start building until toward the end of the signing.  Look forward to seeing you there.

Well, Since no one has made any official plans on here. Might I suggest we all meet for a late lunch at TGI Fridays.. say around 3;30 or 4-ish..on Tuesday. I did go ahead and order my book at Jobeth, it was over 27.00  !which is outrageous!. I always get my books at Borders for 40% off, but it does guarantee you a place first in line. So I guess it is ok. If you go to TGI Fridays website, there is a place to sign up for coupons, buy 1 app. get one free kinda deals. Yes I am on a budget for this trip!  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Title: Re: April 14: TC signing in Lexington, KY
Post by: jogonturan on April 01, 2009, 10:36:28 PM
I'm hoping to get the entire day off so I don't have to rush like crazy from work - but we've been short on first shift and the Captain's office hasn't been approving many comp time requests.   I'll have to see if puppy dog eyes and quivering lips might work there.   ;D

If I can't get the day off, I'll probably hop in the car and drive like a maniac.   Or maybe not like a maniac.  I get off work at 4:15 and Lexington isn't more than 90 minutes away, IIRC.

Jo.

Barring any unexpected changes in plan, I'm hoping to take a little mini-vacation and come out for this.  (It couldn't have happened a year ago, when I still lived there).
No costume here, either, but I have my homemade Red Court t-shirt.  :)

(Hopefully this won't be like my last trip to KY, when I blew a tire halfway back).

I'm pretty much fine with anywhere.  If I'm picturing the right place TGI Friday's is pretty much right down the way from Joseph Beth.  (There's a whole lot of restaurants right around that area).

I believe there may be two TGI Fridays in Lexington - one at the Hamburg Pavilion and one by the Fayette Mall.  The one by the mall is the nearest to Joseph Beth.  I think it's on Rojay Drive, something like that.  (It's been about a year since I lived out that way, so a current resident may know better than I do).  There's also an Olive Garden in the same area.

I really enjoyed the Joesph-Beth Booksellers venue last night.  I've only ever seen him in Barnes and Nobles in St. Louis before last night and they are cramped and have little seating.  Plus most B&N's look exactly the same.

Though I didn't get to see the usual St. Louis Jim Butcher fans I've gotten to know over the last few years.  The Kentucky folks were very friendly.

Hey folks!  I had a blast last night at the signing.  It was great meeting some of you.  I forgot the cord for my camera today, so I don't have my pics uploaded, but will try to get to it tonight.  I posted one pic in the "Jim on Tour" thread (it was a printed one that I had him sign, and I was able to scan it in).

LDS - Did they make you wait since you had a large # of books?  It's great that Jim stayed to sign it all... I don't know how the man does it.  He was still in such a good mood when we were going through, chatting and making jokes, like with the pic I posted.

I took a lot of notes during the Q&A, and will try to get them posted tonight as well.  Right now, I think I need to get some work done! :D

p.s. Araneae - I saw you at one point, but I was talking with someone, then when I turned around you were gone.  :(

I volunteered to wait since I had so many.  It wouldn't been nice or fair to make everybody else wait while I got almost twenty items signed.  I wasn't the one with the most though.  Another lady had the Codex series as well.  I didn't mind waiting.

:D  Same thing.  I saw you, then started talking to someone - and then they called my ticket.  (I kind of bolted from the chair immediately after Jim was done talking, because my chair was a horrific kind of uncomfortable).

It was a really fun event.  I'd never been to any sort of book signing before now.

Howdy folks!

First post but I have been a lurker for a while now, but I just want to say meeting some of you folks in KY at the signing was great!
I brought some friends and we all had a great time Q&A was great, Jim was super friendly when he signed our stuff even though I would say he was tired as heck! He even answered a few questions and told a couple of quick stories to us.

I now have very nice medical (not real) skull AKA "BoB" signed by Jim and soon will have it hooked up with orange LED lights and a motion detctor (voice might be a future work) once thats done his spot on the bookcase is ready including a romance novel or 2 to keep him busy.

Hope we can do it all again for "First Lord's Fury" in Nov/Dec!

thanks to you all and to Jim !

Well, firt off, first post.  Yay.  Shame it took me this long to get on the forums of one of my three favorite living authors.

I was at the signing, which was also my first book signing ever.  I have to say that Jim Butcher is an amazing person.  The Q&A was funny and entertaining, as well as informative.  It made me, suprisingly, look forward to the end of the series.

He was also nice enough to have a picture made with me.  Chatted for a few minutes, when I told him that I remembered going to Joseph Beth many years back and buying Storm Front, and then being veryy dissappointed that there were no other books by him anywhere.

Needless to say, I have been a loyal reader since.

So, if you ever get on here, thanks Mr. Butcher.  You are a stand-up guy, an amazing author, and an all-around great human being.

I now have very nice medical (not real) skull AKA "BoB" signed by Jim and soon will have it hooked up with orange LED lights and a motion detctor (voice might be a future work) once thats done his spot on the bookcase is ready including a romance novel or 2 to keep him busy.

You might want to dig up some recorded readings by Jim himself for Bob lines delivered PERFECTLY. Unfortunately, the only one I know about was recorded by Priscellie for his Turn Coat reading, and those first chapters didn't include Bob. If you're very, very good and bribe the Goddess with much Nutella, crepe and "healthy food" goodness, you MIGHT have a chance of getting some Jim-read Bob lines... what? I said "chance". Not "GOOD chance". :D

I wish!  If I had Jim reading Bob, I'd post it on the forum so fast your ancestors' eyes would cross. :D

*starts digging up old family photos and waiting impatiently*

When and if Jim actually has some quiet time, and after his family and friends are satisfied, we are GOING to supply him with a list of favorite Bob lines (and ask him what HIS faves are) and require a few megs of .wav files. ;D

This was a great event. I haven't been to a signing with so many people at it before!

It was good to meet the circle of forum folks at the end. I had hoped to be able to chat more after getting the book signed but they ushered us out because the store was closed. :)

My husband got a  lot of pictures, we are going to make them into a slideshow for Jim's online interview tomorrow. If there is a place to post them here on the forums, I would be glad to share them here too.

Most of them didn't turn out because he was moving. Actually those are kind of funny. LOL

I met another guy at Cape Comic Con this last weekend who was also at the signing. I don't remember seeing him, but then again, there were a TON of folks there.

Small world eh?

Sorry, I have been MIA. So much stuff has been going on since the event. It just gets busier and busier as the weather turns nicer and people are coming out of hibernation!

Hi BBB!  It was great meeting you!

We'd love to see your pics.  In the McAnally's section, there's a thread specifically for pics of Jim on tour that you can post the pic in!

Also, if you've got an interview to post, there's a thread of interviews, too!
