Cinder Spires Spoilers / Etherialist
« on: May 23, 2020, 06:54:05 AM »
What would be some other Etherialists quirks?

Folly can't talk directly to anyone, Ferrus can't open doors, Madame is obsessive about manners.

I imagine theirs an Etherialist who only speaks in songs.

What would some other potential quirks?

DF Spoilers / How to break the Lady's Mantles.
« on: February 26, 2020, 12:42:05 PM »
Sex with the Winter/Summer Knight of there respective courts. Mab says what the Mantle will do to defend itself. Winter Knight is part of the Winter Mantle as extensively talked about in Cold Days. Mantle can't defend against itself, would probably indulge in it.

DF Spoilers / Marcone
« on: February 03, 2020, 01:00:24 AM »
Ok so admittedly I've been watching a couple of Michael Franzese's videos on youtube. Some first hand statistics he gives is that in 1986 he was cited as one of the top 50 mob bosses in America, by today he's the only one still alive.

So Marcone being on top for a couple of decades in real world is fairly unlikely. So I have a WAG, that Marcone in addition to positioning himself within the Accords, has managed to convince some of those human US factions we here about in the background to let him be the Unofficial Ambassador to the Supernatural factions.

It would secure his position as being all but impossible to prosecute, as he's too vital for the role he plays. Lucky Luciano and a few other Mob bosses had similar deals in WW2, or against Cuba.

This would be beneficial to the Nation not only because he's the only pure human on the accords, but also as a measure and step against Lara Raiths increase in power as well. As Thomas says Lara wants control, and even by Changes was able to bring a chopper into Mexico. Laras power has really only grown since the Fall of the Red Court, and the loose alliance against the Fomor.

Marcone would be seen as the devil they know. Even Harry views him as such.

So thoughts?

DF Spoilers / Drakul/Dracula- Blood of the Dragon.
« on: January 18, 2020, 06:01:43 AM »
Rereading Grave Peril, at the Masquerade ball Michael Identifies/Prayer/Threats Mavra as 'Blood of the Dragon'. Significant given that in the same party we meet Ferrofax and find out about Siriothrax.

For a long time we've assumed Drakul was an Outsider. But the fact that the Black Court was made/sponsored by his son Dracula in addition to the fact that both names mean Dragon, and both were historically members of Order of the Dragon.

Seems fairly conclusive that they themselves are Dragon or Dragon related. The specific WOJ is this.

"Drakul wasn't a scion of anything! He was something entirely unhuman that got trapped in human form. Dracula was his half-human child, who naturally had enormous paternal issues, and wound up creating himself as the first Black Court Vampire in an effort to win his father's approval.
It didn't work out so well."

So entirely unhuman could mean Dragon.

Or from what we know of Outsiders at some point a lot of them were Dark Gods exiled to the Outer Gates, given how powerful Dragons are they could outrank said gods, so are therefore applicable to be cast out.

DF Spoilers / Supernatural influence in culture.
« on: December 23, 2019, 08:05:05 AM »
So Mab helped publish the Grimm Fairy Tales, in part because according to Thomas, the Venatori tried to make the Fae 'forgettable'.

She also may have been partially responsible for the printing press, if Thomas wry humour included the Brother Grimm and the inventer of the Printing Press in the same sentence it's plausible she had a hand in that as well.

The very nature of the Venatori is too ensure society forgets old legends, so an innovation the spreads information might not have been to their advantage. Judging by White Council policy to publish dark books like the Necronicom in order for them to be useless (from there point of view). It seems like that tactic was designed to combat the Venatores.

However the fact that we know Lara Raith had a hand in publishing Dracula by Bram Stoker, shows how adaptable she can be, as she presumably did it part for the Venatores mission to annihalite ancient evil powers.

So we have 2 or 3 instances of supernatural influence of Culture.

1. Mab- Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales.
2. Mab- Printing Press
3. Mab- Disney.
3. Lara/Venatore- Bram Stoker.

Now we also know from WoJ, that the White Council had a big hand in the Renaissance. Making sure geniuses got proper education and positions of influence. I assume they made sure the old myths that inspired the Renaissance Menn were spread as well.

So thats 4.

4. White Council-Renaissance.

Kemmler- World War 1. Society of Thule which was a real cult, and an enemy of the White Council as we know from Luccios short story.

5. Kemmler- World War 1.
6. Kemmler- Thule Society.

7. Merlin- King Arthur.

As of Paranet Papers, we know of Simon Pietrovichs relationship with the Tsars of Russia.

8.Simon Pietrovich- Russian Revolution.

9. George Washing ton- Knight of the Cross

Now my question is what other influences on culture/history supernatural forces have had?

Personally I think there was something going on in the French Revolution/Napoleon Wars. Also I wonder if Kringle has a hand in Coca Cola.

Thoughts?

DF Spoilers / Which god do you want to see in Dresden Files?
« on: October 01, 2019, 06:13:06 PM »
So by the Wrestling book we'll see a few more Gods which one do you want to see the most?

Personally I'm interested in the Greek Gods family dynamic as according to Jim Hades, is the sane one and has made analogies to Arrested Development.

However I'd also be interested in the Titans, as presumably they're some of the Old Ones humanity hasn't forgotten yet. So the Venatori and the Archive haven't been successful against them, so maybe we get to see more of the Oblivion War as well.

I also hope we see some of the Egyptian gods. The Egyptian Pantheon religion lasted for twice that of Christianity, assuming you discount Jewish tradition.Personally I think the Spear of Osiris was the Egyptian version of a Knight of the Cross. Also we know Father Forthill and some other priests have tattoos of the Eye of Horus so we might get some more significant information about that as well.

Anyway thoughts? Theories? Which god(s) and why?

DF Spoilers / Did Kemmler start the Black Council?
« on: September 19, 2019, 08:22:17 AM »
Theories in the title. We know from Luccio's short story Society of Thule is legit- As legit as any other Black Magic group.

So I wonder if thats not the only organisation Kemmler started or was a part of?

Did he start the Black Council? or the Circle as Cowl says in White Night.

Also if it is the Circle, does the Circle only have 13 members? Similar to the Grey Council. As Dresden says thats the biggest number a spell can have.

Also how does the Black Council/Circle relate to the Fomor, Corpsetaker. If Cowl is a member and he fought against Corpsetaker and Grevane, who were Kemmlers disciples.

Anything else on the Black Council and Circle feel free to discuss.

DF Spoilers / What does Kringle know that Nicodemus doesn't?
« on: August 12, 2019, 04:22:35 AM »
are. But the Master of Shadows doesn’t prefer to operate that way, no.” Nicodemus’s control over the gang of superpowered lunatics was starting to make more sense now. “Master of Shadows. That’s an old, old phrase for a spy master.” “Exactly,” Kringle said. “Nicodemus knows very nearly as much as I do. Anduriel has the potential to hear anything uttered within reach of any living being’s shadow, and sometimes to look out from it and see.”

Butcher, Jim. Skin Game (The Dresden Files, Book 15) (pp. 373-374). Little, Brown Book Group. Kindle Edition.

So what does Vadderung/Kringle know that Nicodemus doesn't?

Personally I thinks its something very specific, one thing in particular that could be a huge advantage over the Nickelheads.

DF Spoilers / House Raith and the Venatores
« on: April 21, 2019, 08:13:26 AM »
Just been thinking. How long has Lara Raith been a venatore? Presumably centuries, and when did she recruit Thomas?

What this question raises for me is did Papa Raith know, given his support by an unknown Outsider.

Given the Venatores are waging a millenial long wars against Old Gods to vanquish them to the Outside. How did this effect Lord Raith given his backing by the Outsiders. Did Lara get involved with the Venatores as a way to fight the Outsiders because of Lord Raith?

Basically if thats the case why didn't Lord Raith deal with Lara or did Lara manage to keep it a secret from her father?

DF Spoilers / Malcolm Dresden and Uriels Purgatory Squad
« on: April 10, 2019, 04:28:42 AM »
So I think this theory has been brought up before, but thought I'd mention it again.

Malcolm appears to Harry in a few dream sequences in Dead Beat. During the scene they hang around a campfire while a creature called a Jabberwock haunts the trees.

Quote from: Dead Beat p 105
‘So,’ I said. ‘Why haven’t I dreamed about you before?’
‘Because I wasn’t allowed to contact you before,’ my father said easily. ‘Not until others had crossed the line.’
‘Allowed?’ I asked. ‘What others? What line?’
He waved a hand. ‘It isn’t important. And we don’t have much time here before it returns.’

Butcher, Jim. Dead Beat: 7 (The Dresden Files series) (pp. 105-106). Little, Brown Book Group. Kindle Edition.

Given that we know Uriel arranged for Butters as an 'incipient knight' to intervene with Cassius, we know he was active in pulling some of the strings in Dead Beat.

Quote from: Skin Game
“When Cassius Snakeboy was about to gut me, I remember thinking that no Knight of the Cross was going to show up and save me.”
“Cassius was a former Knight of the Blackened Denarius,” Uriel said. “It seems appropriate that he should be countered by an incipient Knight of the Cross. Don’t you think?”

Butcher, Jim. Skin Game (The Dresden Files, Book 15) (p. 441). Little, Brown Book Group. Kindle Edition.

We know that Uriel can only act as a reaction of whenever someone evil acts, it seems to fit with what Malcolm briefly tells Harry. That they crossed a line so he was allowed to contact him. Also Malcolm specifically mentions angels and fallen angels. So presumably he's the counter balance to Lasciels Shadow who appears for the first time in Dead Beat.

Quote from: Dead Beat
‘No one can tell you that,’ he said. ‘Not me. Not an angel. And not a fallen angel. You are the product of your own choices, Harry, and nothing can change that. Don’t let anyone or anything tell you otherwise.’

Butcher, Jim. Dead Beat: 7 (The Dresden Files series) (pp. 106-107). Little, Brown Book Group. Kindle Edition.

Malcolm mentions that Harry has friends on the other side.

Quote from: Dead Beat
‘But it doesn’t mean you’ve got to be alone before you go through the door. And believe me, you aren’t alone on the other side.’

Butcher, Jim. Dead Beat: 7 (The Dresden Files series) (p. 390). Little, Brown Book Group. Kindle Edition.

Malcolm also emphasises Harry's choices and free will which is pretty much Uriels entire purpose.

Quote from: Dead Beat
You didn’t do what you did for your own benefit. You did it so that you could protect others. That doesn’t make it right – but it doesn’t make you a monster, either. You still have free will. You still get to choose what you will do and what you will be and what you will become.’ He clapped my shoulder and turned to walk away. ‘As long as you believe you are responsible for your choices, you still are. You’ve got a good heart, son. Listen to it.’

Butcher, Jim. Dead Beat: 7 (The Dresden Files series) (p. 390). Little, Brown Book Group. Kindle Edition.

So all this together makes a pretty compelling case that Malcolm works for Uriel.

I also like the idea that Murphy and Harry's fathers work together. Murphy's father was adament that Harry not tell her about him, so it's possible Harry's father stayed out of the way for that particular mission as well.

Ghost Story information about the squad.
So the squad is “Between” with their own guardian angel Amitiel, standing doorman and watchdog.
According to Jack Murphy, Dresden was in Between and they could facilitate his return to earth albeit as a ghost because.

Quote from: Ghost Story.p12
“The opposition” Jack said. “You died because they cheated”
“Wait. What opposition?”
“The angel standing guard at the elevator is what we cops think of as a clue. You need me to draw you some pictures?”
“Um. Hell you mean? Like… actual Fallen angels?”
“Not exactly. But if you want to think of it that way, it works. Sort of. What you need to know is that they’re the bad guys”
“That’s why I’m here” I said. “Because they… broke some sort of cosmic rule”
“You were getting in their way. They wanted you gone. They broke the law to make it happen. That makes you my problem”

So pretty explicitly stated that the squad could only act because the Fallen acted first and broke the cosmic law. Now interestingly enough Dresden is actually offered a choice between going back and solving his own murder or getting a job on the squad.

Quote from: Ghost Story p 14
“Look kid you’re stuck here. You aren’t going anywhere until we get this discrepancy sorted out”
…..
He shrugged “You want a job here instead, I can set you up”

Now Jack specifically tells Harry not to tell Murphy about him. Possibly due to some cosmic law.
Quote from: Ghost Story. P22
“No messages. I’ve done her enough harm”

Now for Uriels big reveal towards the end of the book.
Quote from: Ghost Story. p571
“Jack told you” Uriel said. “They cheated. The scale had to be balanced”
I shook my head “That office in Chicago Between. It was yours”
“One of them” he said nodding “I have a great deal of work to do. I recruit those willing to help me”
“What work?” I asked.
“The same work I ever have done” Uriel said. “I and my colleagues labor to ensure freedom”
“Freedom of what?” I asked.
“Of will. Of choice. The distinction between good and evil is meaningless if one does not have the freedom to choose between them. It is my duty, my purpose in Creation, to protect and nourish that meaning”

Uriels purpose explicitly stated and explained. Uriel goes on to explain how a fallen angel could have the knowledge and insight to suggest something at a precise moment to engineer a desired outcome. Specifically he’s talking about Lasciel.

Uriels actions were to counter that of Lasciel. Just like Malcolm Dresden was specifically used as an action against Lasciels Shadow.

Last mention of Between is when Uriel gives Sir Stuart a job.

Quote from: Ghost Story. p586
“Trust me. The ruins of a spirit like Sir Stuart’s are more substantial than most men ever manage to dredge up. I’d be very pleased to have you working for me”

So there needs to be something spiritually significant for a man to get a job in the Between. Evryone is pretty firm on the fact that Malcolm Dresden was a good man.

Anyway Theirs my evidence and theory. Comment, discuss, disprove, theorise away.

DF Spoilers / Vadderung Theory Debunked
« on: March 17, 2019, 06:33:47 AM »
I don't have the link on me but Jim mentions in a Q&A Thor travels around COlleges playing College Football, much to Odin's chagrine.

So with that confirmation of where Thor is, the favoured theory that Donar Vadderung means Thunder YoungFather, isn't indicitave that Thor took over the Odin mantle. Siiigh. Alas it was a theory I enjoyed.

DF Spoilers / Gard's Bullets
« on: December 24, 2018, 09:43:36 AM »
So I just reread Even Hand and Marcone used a bullet that killed Admiral Nelson at Trifalgar, it made me wonder what other bullets Gard could provide Marcone with.

The three that come to mind for me are Abraham Lincoln bullet shot by John Wilkes Booth's Derenger, Archduke Ferdinand at the outbreak of World War 1 and also JFK

Any other that come to mind?

DF Spoilers / Vadderung/Kringle
« on: December 18, 2018, 04:44:54 AM »
So it's been awhile since we've had this discussion so I'm just gonna reboot it a bit, with a slight addition.

Alright first off the evidence, from a variety of WOJ sources.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZJiv_GT-Jc&t=2409s starts at 15:00 minutes in.

Quote from: JimButcherTysonscorner
"He's already Kringle when Kringles around...When he's acting in his role of Kringle he takes on the Kringle Aspect when he's doing that he's got all the power of a major lord of Faerie but he's also beholden to Mab while it's going on, Mab's no dummy though so she knows not to order him around. But they do talk and have strategy sessions and stuff like that. The Kringle is what Odin does to keep from dying of old age."

Quote from: JimButcher
...Santa Clause, the Winter king who is not the commercial Santa Clause...anta Clause, one of the winter kings, is kinder, the spirit of generosity in a time of bleakness

Quote from: JimButcher
Jim: He is wyldfae.  He isn't a subject of Mab or Titania.  That's what Wyldfae means.  But his origins are in the Summer-side of the cycle of seasons, just like Titania's are.
Ditto Santa, only in Winter.  :)
(He /is/ beholden to Mother Summer, but basically everyone in Faerie is, so.)
(I mean, that's like saying "you must obey the law of gravity."  Duh.)

Quote from: JimButcher
He /could/. But that isn't the Allfather's style. Odin saw you coming last year, and he made his countermoves to what you're doing right now a week and a half ago. For guys like him, fights are what happen when you /fail/ to win with /real/ power--knowledge and forethought.

Quote from: JimButcher
It's more accurate to say that he is /a/ Winter King. Or even more accurately, that he is a free Wyld Fae who is of a power level that is on par with Mab's and happens to neighbor her sphere of influence, and finds it simpler to show up to family dinners during the holidays and make polite than to start staking out boundaries and establishing treaties.

Quote from: JimButcher
Is Kringle Fae?
His mantle, yes, is part of the Winter Court. Which does not necessarily mean that he himself is Fae as much as the fact that his mantle is. While he’s there, he’s got to pay deference to Mab. If Mab gives him a command, he has to obey it.

Quote from: JimButcher
2015 AMA
Vadderung is Santa Claus, is he also St Nicholas?
And Father Christmas and Sinterklaas and a variety of others. But in our modern era, a lot of people wear multiple hats on the job.

Quote from: JimButcher
If you’re (a powerful immortal being) in the real world, well, the problem is that you’re in the world, and you’re kind of mortal, and something could come along and try and whack you, if they’re fast enough, or good enough, or lucky enough. Which makes Odin a kind of special guy, because he doesn’t mind it, he thinks it’s awesome.

Okay so first the two Bold bits. These Confirm that Vadderung is Mortal or atleast partially Mortal enough to have to worry about aging and getting whacked. It also gives us a solid reason as to why Vadderung became or took up a Faerie Mantle to help combat his aging.

Combine this with Vadderung's Eye and the two theories that.
a) Vadderung took over the Odin Mantle at some point, due to taking up the title Vadder-ung. i.e. Younger Father
b) That Vadderung used to be the Gatekeeper.

My theory is this. That Vadderung was once a Powerful Wizard who through taking up atleast two mantles that of Odin, and Kringle expanded both his power and his lifespan.

The limits/exchange of this being that he has to pay service to Mab, with whom he has a working relationship and knows her well enough to comment on and give Dresden advice about her.

Quote from: Cold Dayspage505
Never let her make you cringe--but never challenge her pride wizard. I don't know exactly what passed between you two, but I suspect that if it had been witnessed by another, she would break you to pieces. I've seen it before. Terrible pride in that creature. She'll never bend

We get a direct example of how the relationship and service to Mab works in Skin Game.

Quote from: Skin Game page 371
"The Winter Knight called for me in his official capacity as an agent of the Winter Court. Mab has the right to summon Kringle. If she'd called for Vadderung, I'd have told her to get in line

Quote from: Skin Game page 372
Legally speaking Kringle and Vadderung are two entirely different people who simply happen to reside in the same body

Quote from: Skin Game page 372
"Little games of protocol are how one shows respect, especially to those with whom one does not get along with famously well. It can be tedious but is generally less trouble than a duel would be.

So Vadderung is a significant enough entity in his own right to tell Mab to buzz off, but they have created a way for them to work together on cordial terms.

Legally Vadderung and Kringle are to seperate entities, personalities, identities and mantles, with different responsibilities, status and roles.

Finally in addition to the knowledge that Vadderung can tell of Queen Mab ruler of the Winter Court, we get the slight tidbit, that Vadderung/Kringle does not or has not always gotten along with Mab. To the point that theirs potential for a duel between them if they did have these little games of protocol.

My theory is that Vadderung puts up with these games of protocol and of the Kringle Mantle so that he doesn't age despite his apparent mortality.

So thoughts?

Cinder Spires Spoilers / Other Steampunk books worth reading?

Me personally I can recommend Tales of the Ketty Jay and Mortal Engines.
