DF Spoilers / Re: The Barabbas curse
« on: April 11, 2021, 09:18:16 PM »
No consequences.  Lea gets the sword, trades up for the Atheme, Thomas steals it back, Michael does a happy dance and the sword is back in action.
Do you mean just like Butter gets the sword, does happy dance and the sword is back in action and now in some ways stronger than before?

She did it because a monster was killing the person she loves and she was manipulated by one of the main villains of the series who is a master manipulator. I would say loosing, but being close, with nic as a vanilla human underlines how super cool and awesome Murph is. But she is a real human being with feelings and can be manipulated.  At least that is what I got from that scene.

Harry just did it to save himself.

I don't see why Odin would mind someone executing an enemy. Especially not Nic in that situation, which is why Nic would only try it with a KoTC.

DF Spoilers / Re: How Murphy could return to the Dresden Files
« on: April 11, 2021, 09:00:38 PM »
To me the einharjar seems like a pretty likely representation of vikings who died in glorious battle.

Do they seem different than people today? Yes, because lived more than 1000 years ago and was raised in a sort of warrior cult society where the best fate they could imagine was to die in glorious battle. So they could be rewarded with fighting to death every day to prepare for ragnarok. I mean, of course they are a bit odd.

I have not seen anything to suggest that they have been changed by becoming einharjaren. A serious argument for that should quote the books.

"I nodded. Then after a while, I said, “If she’s an Einherjar, now …” Gard shook her head. “Not until the memory of her has faded from the minds of those who knew her. That is the limit not even the All-father may cross.”"

To be fair I have not read all of the posts above, but this is sooooooooo lose. Like it is hard to imagine it being any looser and still be a coherent statement. What does it even mean? No-one khows except Jim.

"because normally in a story, when the hero fights the good fight and saves the day, they get rewarded, but Murphy didn't." -someone earlier in the thread.

You guys get that she got to go to the super exclusive warrior heaven right?

There is fighting all day and partying all night, anything a real viking could wish for and I think that was what she was. I don't count it as a tragic ending. It was even pretty painless.

I like Murph and think we will see her again, but I think she deserves some time in warrior heaven :-)

Also i really liked the death scene and think it was perfect, both if Rudy did it on his own and if he was guided.

I agree with the statement above that it is very inappropriate to call Butcher sexist without pointing to specific cases. I would say it is a series full of strong female characters and a protagonist who focuses on only romantically engaging with someone he has really strong feelings for. The main character is a guy, baddies go after people close to him like his brother, kid, friends and partner. Because he is a man, the partners have been women.

About the sword, what do you think about that time where Dresden (the man) misused it against Lea?

DF Spoilers / Re: Mab Lying to Demonreach

Maybe you could even say that Harry choose to believe in Uriel's words and as a result they became the truth. Just like he was a representative of a faith or something :-D

I think this thought experiment underlines Man and other limitations and lack thereof. Let's say that Man gives Harry an order to get the shroud from Nic who she knows has just returned with it to Chicago.

Maybe it turns out that it was actually a shape shifter who impersonated Nic.

Clearly she did not speak the truth when she said Nic had returned to Chicago, but just as clearly she cannot use saying something as a truth detector.

Although Mab trying to say different things in the same way as that game when you have to guess who you are (and it is worrying on a card placed 8n your forehead) based on statements you are only told are true or false is funny.

It is almost like one of them is a gangster with very limited restrictions (moral and otherwise) and the other is trying to be a decent human being and is concerned about his soul.

At least to me it seems that Harry definitely took the wise choice between him and Marcone.

What do you think he should have been doing on those months when he was trapped on the island that he did not do? And how did Man get him to prepare for running am obstacle course without him knowing?

I also assumed it was one of those kids. It was actually a good reference I think, anyone who had not read cold case could read over it as an example of the swords power. But those who did got an example of how it mattered that the winter lady is recruiting fairy kids.

DF Spoilers / Is Harry downplaying Mabs protection?
« on: January 26, 2021, 08:27:56 AM »
This was sparked by comments that Harry was vulnerable because he is no longer part of the white council.

I think Harry is underestimating what Mab would do if someone killed him. Of course her settling the score with them won't help him, but it won't play out nice for the killers either.

She has to balance the scales, so even if e.g. Marcone would trick Harry into breaking the accords and make Mab kill him, I think Mab would do something similar to Marcone, e.g. she could have forced him to kill Hendricks and loose power in some way.

What do you think? Do you agree with Harry's assessment that of her knight can't protect himself she won't care?

I think we would all have been a little surprised if Marcone in changes had been all like, this is my territory too, I'll just get my army of Einherjargen/troubleshooters ready for when you know where we are going.

I agree that setting him in contact with Odin was what he needed at the time. On the other hand maybe Gard would have reached out regardless if that was an important part of the reason why she has been in the city all this time.

DF Spoilers / Re: So what is next

If we discount 2016-2019 where Butcher did not publish any books, he published a Dresden files book every year 2000-2015 except, 2005 and 2014. At the same time he published a book a year in Codex Alera from 2004-2009, so I think the formula is working very well for him. To get the overview myself I made the attached picture.

I think Marcone would have liked to do it regardless, but maybe it was a bit easier to do it now that it was not certain that Ethniu could swat him like a fly.

I think Ethniu needed the air to be supercharged with fear and the barrier between the never-never and reality to be weakened, so she would be able to use the eye frequently. And & think she needed that to happen before she faced of against the big hitters. That would give them a pretty big warning anyway, so she tried to make something of it.

She had to win against Mab that day, because if the outer gates were not under attack winters forces would be too large.
