DF Spoilers / Re: Why EVERYONE is ok with a wardenless demonreach
« on: September 13, 2022, 04:24:33 PM »
This, I think.

Being the Warden simultaneously :
  • gives that person access to an incredible amount of power
  • puts them under a constant psychic strain
  • makes them a target for those looking to use the power (n.b. that includes indirect pressure, manipulation, blackmail, bribery, seduction, deception, etc)
  • makes them a target for anyone looking to jailbreak one or more prisoners

Who does the (paranoid) White Council choose as the person to wield all that power, wear that bullseye?  Caught between paranoias -- not willing to trust anyone who's willing to actually step up to say "I'll do it!" but also few/none willing to accept the role if asked, for fear they're being nominated to die...

We've also already seen how far they can stick their heads in the sand, denying reality:  they don't want to face the fact that a Warden is actually necessary (and with the coming Apocalypse, critically necessary).

So the paranoia keeps them from screwing their courage to the sticking-point, and the OPD (Ostrich Personality Disorder) convinces them it's probably OK, for now...
I always think that part of the problem is that jim nevers rights a short will the SC members as narrators. There is a word of jim that the Merlins plan for ending the war was pointing harry at them. This woj implies a lot. What if the SC is so relaxed because it knows that Mab, and Odin was on the job. BG tells us that Odi  spents to much time in Chicago due to him having plans for how to defend Chicago

Yes, but what I don't understand is:
Why let it without Warden? So any villain could grab it and try to become Warden themselves? Wouldn't it be better to make sure there is a Warden you can trust, instead of waiting for someone to just stumble upon the job?

What other Wardens did we know except Harry and Kemmler? OK, could be the job makes them crazy. Or only the crazy can get the job in the first place. ;)
Only the crazy get the job would be scary
But in line with the Dresden files universe
Part of me thinks tha lasciel was a test meant to prepare harry for the role. If u can tame a fallen demonreach wont corrupt u

WHY EVERYONE IS OK WITH DEMONREACH NOT HAVING A WARDEN
So when last did Demonreach last have a warden before harry got the job. The books imply at least 5 years. I have seen so say 15 years or more. Which is crazy, cause Demonreach is scary and powerful. All the major players seem to know about it. Yet none seem to be willing to attempt a power grap and take it for themselves in the years without a  warden. Mab in Changes claims Demonreach could have defended itself from the ladies and co. And BG implies that the Warden is a weakness thst can be used to get in the island being able to defend itself. NEMESIS’S plan
Stop theory time
What if in the early days the council always made sure their was a warden. But most candidates died trying to bound with it. Thosewere the lucky ones. Those who succeed ended up getting unstable. This could explain why no one rushes to fill the spot its more troble than its worth.

DF Spoilers / Re: Maggie white council spy
« on: September 09, 2022, 08:09:29 PM »
Margaret was old by the time Thomas was born.  Luccio was her contemporary.  Nobody sets out to star as the villain in their own story. Whatever she was at the end she had a backstory which got her there.  In some senses the story implies that at first she had noble aims. So while she was becoming Margaret La Fay she was a part of wizard society. She was known and ran with her contemporaries.

She broke at least one of the Laws directly, The First Law.  To the Council at large she was under a death sentence. She may have time traveled and she lived with Raith and there is no indication that he enthralled her at first.  She abandoned her child to a life as a vampire.  Since Eb was ignorant of the existence of Thomas we can assume it was because she wanted him ignorant.  Since Eb was the wet works guy for the SC it is possible to assume that he went to that meeting at the direction of the SC to hear Maggie's pitch.

There is no indication in the text that Eb saw her after that point, which begs a couple of questions.  When did he see Malcolm and when did he become aware of Harry?
Part of my theory hangs on drakul's speech in BG. That the bearded men knew and plan his birth.

Eb seems to have come into contact with malcom at some point early on. And was probably under SC observation. Justin was probably in charge of that giving him the means and opportunity to get to harry first

Maggie was a spy for the white council not team upstairs. This means she can be damned for here questionable actions. Odin and mab are both on the good side but i doubt they are going to the pearly gates. Grey is on team good guy but mr Sunshine was still gonna nuke him

Something that bothers me about maggie lefay. Everyone says they knew her, bad guys, good guys, mab and they all say she was a piece of work
We are told hell was waiting for her only tl be robbed. Wardens wanted to bring her down. But she is somehow on good terms with morgan and luccio. Has meetings with rashid.
And is somehow the council's choose togive birth to and raise a starborn. Thats something which I  think requires  someone u trust to do.
So my theory is that the SC did trust her. Maybe they told her to get involved with possible enemies of the council to learn their plans. Maggie is told by raith that the vampires are trying to create a starborn. She tells the council they decide to steal the plan for themselves while using raith as a cover. Thomas is the result of an experiment to see if they can engineer a child born at a specific time. When it works. The council hives the go ahead.
Then Mr Sunshine manipulates maggie by introducing her to a random good guy.

To answer the og question about why harry never asked the archive or eb, or anyone else about starborn, his mom or any other spoiler is that the price is probably too high. Also i think wizard mentors drill the students on the price of information.
Harry wasn't abuse but molly never asked about the skull.  Harry probably made it difficult for  molly to ask  too many questions that so that in the future she would know that curiosity definitely kills the cat. Im sure justin was the type to punish you if you asked a question he didn't like, or thought you weren't ready for. Wizards learn early on to hoard knowledge like smaug hoards gold

@geek and CT. BEEN THINKING OF SOMETHING I LIKE THIS FOR A WHILE. The hat was supposed to stop you stealing my thoughts before i had them. Hats off to you. Slow clapping sounds
I think the main driver for all this is Mr Sunshine.  At some point Harry is going to be like 'the world was on fire and it wasn't my fault '
Mab rolls her eyes and goes of course its not.
Then the reveal than Mab, Odin and Mr Sunshine manipulated nemesis in to infecting justin.

Yes but under Winter Law that obligation still needs to be discharged.
Yes but under Winter Law that obligation still needs to be discharged.
The way jim writes that favour will bite harry in the ass. Harry can the favour to molly the winter lady but she isnt always molly sometimes its just the winter lady. My take is that when she collects, molly wont want to do it but the mantle  will force her to. Jim writes with what will pain harry the most.
I can imagine him laughing as harry and molly cry about the favour

I disagree. Not saying the WC WILL move against a school, but that the SCHOOL being considered part of Winter.  The Knight is a liaison with a foot in each world, but he CAN be attacked for his HUMAN side without it being seen as an attack on Winter.  Shooting a Marine at a US Embassy on guard duty can be considered an attack on the US. The same Marine being stabbed in a bar fight offduty that night is not.

It also strikes me that if any attack on the WK is an attack on Winter - even if he was doing it at Harry's behest, why didn't Winter move against Kincaid? He shot the WK with intent to kill him. They didn't because that was Harry on Harry - personal, not professional Winter work.
I agree. Mab wont defend her knight if he does something stupid. There is a woj that if harry breaks the laws of magic, she wont defend him.
Most powers dont know what Mab will orwont do which harry takes advantage of in BG when he threatened Carlos.
It's the knight's job to protect the queen not the other way around

I think the issue is that the WC model is no longer ideal for the modern world. But on the other hand taking every little talent to be part of the council may be a bad idea.
Harry was the youngest member of the council and the council went to war for him against the reds (not really).
The wardens like Carlos complain about having little say in the council despite doing most of the fighting.

1st time poster
This topic has been discussed before. But
In the past the wc has been criticized for its head off first ask qns never policy in regard to the warlocks. But think about this, most members of the wc are a couple hundred years old or older. Most of them either saw kemmler rise or have masters, mentors or friends who were there. I think its possible that kemmler had a trial and was placed under the doom. Instead of turning a new leaf, he became well him. The council members who voted for leniency probably carry a lot of quilt over what he eventually became.
Then comes harry Dresden. I mean come on. All the older wizards seem to be able to tell how strong someone is, and how strong they will come. Justin was trained by the council's vampire expert, justin was probably not a push over and harry beat him at 16. Given that morgan thought Dresden was a destroyer, I think the older generations have an idea or suspect what harry was meant to be. Everyone looks at harry and rightly sees a stronger, better version of kemmler who in a couple of centuries will be as strong as Ebenezer.
