...What else am I missing?  Seems very likely I need to inform Jim he's wrong. :D

I very much love that this is a community where that can happen.  And that Jim's the kind of author who will listen, of course.  :-D

I suspected this might be an issue when I started my game, so I started out by setting two ground rules: 1, Harry died at Bianca's party.  2, It is a year after that event.  From there, everyone else contributed as normal.  Setting such a major event as a founding "truth" to the campaign allowed everyone to accept later changes as they came, since it wasn't assumed to be the exact world of the books.

For my part, I've only included three cannon characters, and only in bit parts.
Thomas showed up at a vampire party as the House Raith representative, but in a world where he failed to save Harry's life, he's a bitter ass.  The players got to outshine him.  They loved it.

Morgan appeared once to stress The Laws to our budding magus.  He was basically all *intimidate, spell out the letter of the law, threaten, leave*.  It was enough to warrant no further Council intervention.

Finally I had Maeve show up at a ball.  The one player who was ballsy enough to introduce himself got snarked at and insulted (as politely as possible)-- as you'd expect from someone of her stature.  He snarked back of course, in courtly fashion, and everyone got a laugh.

These visits cement to them that, yes, it's the same world with its own internal consistency.  The book characters also don't stick around after serving this purpose, which allowes them to get out of the players' way and let their characters be the awesome ones.

YMMV, but it's worked really well for me and my table.

DFRPG / Re: FATE Core and DFRPG

Right.  because that's just another Flashbang affect.  There is a set of rules for that.  Aspects are the catch all for the game.  They work wonders.  Abstracting other game mechanics like that...  It messes with the players.  Armor is something that physically slows the bullets.
And it isn't anything to do with the system.  It has a whole lot to do with the gameworld where Magic is pretty much affected by magic on the positive side of things.  There are a multitude of ways to weaken it.  But few to strengthen it that a mortal can handle.
Off the top of my head the closest things seen have been the times Harry pulled energy from one place to another.  I can see someone starting a car and the wizard yanking the internal combustion energy to power a spell.  But I can't say that's a manuever.  Possibly an application of the drive skill to keep it going while so much energy is being drained.

Your flashbang thing is an aspect giving a free tag to dodge.  How does one use a spell to enhance that effect?  More light and sound sure. But making that armor is silly and unnecessary.

The water to stop fire is an aspect allowing tags against the attack.  Not armor.  It can give the aspect wet which can be tagged to boost water spells.  But the water was already there(nearby) in all reality and so could be tagged without the action to unleash it.

Now, i've got you stretching pretty far on that one, which makes my point well enough.  It's all very very situational.  The characters are more likely to be by a layline.

Now, a thing I noticed while looking through the fatecore stuff.
None of the magic systems appear to cause mental stress. Thoughts?  It reinforces my thought that the refresh costs of evocation powers in DFRPG are higher than they would be in Fatecore.  However I also don't see weapon values so I could be wrong.  But I think it might be interesting that using the powers at 0 weapon value might be a zero stress action then. SO for instance dodging with Discipline via a quickly raised shield that deflects the bullet for 0 stress.

Wow, your view of magic is very narrow and restricting.  Especially in Dresden's world where magic is fueled by belief and fighting spirit.

Why wouldn't the drive roll you mention be a maneuver to place the Combustion Energy aspect on the scene?

I think you're too tied in to a specific interpretation of the rules.  FATE is best at being a free-form, "yeah, it does exactly that cool thing you just came up with" system.  Let me ask you this: Imagine for a moment that you're playing FATE basic, without any setting-specific rules or Powers and just using aspects.  Would you let someone be a wizard?  Why not?

DFRPG / Re: Dresden Files RPG ACCELERATED!
« on: January 23, 2013, 06:08:33 PM »
To put the kickstarter in perspective, donating $10 to it now, before it finishes, provides you with digital copies of all the core rules, the world-building kit, and the setting compilation.  The amount of materials you get is roughly equivalent to buying over $150 in books in many other games.  It also gets us closer to the Dresden Files RPG accelerated goal, which you would also receive if we get there.

Getting years of potential gaming for the cost of a premium sub sandwich is a pretty sweet deal.
It also supports the dudes who make the DFRPG (and, coincidently, pays the day-job of the cool guy who runs and maintains this website).

For those that haven't heard yet the last stretch goal is going to be a new Dresden Files using the streamlined Fate Accelerated Edition. Go and back the thing, if you haven't already.

Poked!  Jim says: "I'm signing a ton of bookplates this week, I assume for Chicago.  The KC event is real."

I'll keep you updated!

So, how will they know to whom to send book plates?

There is a power in the custom power thread that covers the "utility belt" idea IIRC.  Though I have no idea if that's what it's actually called.

"Bag of Tricks", I believe.

Huh. You're right, that does appear to be how that works. Interesting.

Happy to help.

Once I figured that out, my FATE-GM'ing greatly improved.

That's interesting, I haven't seen that interpretation before. Link?

Fate Core certainly takes the stance that Compels always give a Fate Point...but then, it appears to remove the ability to tag for effect at all, so I'm not sure it says anything useful about doing so in the DFRPG.

Ah!  Here we go.  After looking over FateRPG.com and Fred's Blog, it turns out it was here all along.

Fred, if you happen to check in on this thread: it might be a good idea to add something like this to the FateRpg site at least, and maybe to Core (though, it might already be in Core, I haven't gotten all the way through it with a fine-comb yet and might have missed it).

It's worth noting that Tags don't give the people you use them on FP, so tagging for effect (while in many ways compel-like) will never give the enemy FP. Handy thing to do, really, if you can arrange it.

You're partially right and partially mistaken.  Though, for the second half, it's not entirely your fault as it isn't covered well in the book.

Free tags/invokes do not directly provide FPs, as in gaining a +2 bonus against someone on the round after you wounded them.  In this case you are correct.

But invokes/tags for effect initiate a compel from the GM.  Compels always grant FPs if accepted*.
This is how a single scene aspect can be tagged for effect to compel an entire zone.  Where would all of those compel fate points come from?  The GM's endless pool, of course.

Fred's covered this distinction a few times.  Maybe someone more diligent than I has a relevant link?

*Ignoring debt compels and the like, but there's a different kind of repayment going on there.

My understanding was that folks who were going to attend the Chicago signing would be sent signed bookplates, though I might be mistaken.  I'll poke Jim and ask.

To answer your question, you can order signed books through Jim's local independent bookstore, Dog Eared Books.  Call or email them, and they'll give you the skinny.  I'm not sure how often Jim goes over to sign for them, and it may take a while for the order to be processed at this stage, given all the hubbub of the holidays, but things should calm down in the new year.

This would be pretty cool, if it could be arranged.  How would this be handled?  Would it require me do dig out my receipt or something?

His default dedcication on them should be "Sorry I missed you! -Jim Butcher"

DFRPG / Re: Mechanical Preview?

Sure (and that's actually a really fun idea)...but that's not part of the core rules. You could give a fire HP and an AC in D&D, too, but that doesn't mean that doing so is part of the core rules. Which is all I was saying, really.
I don't believe the FATE fractal is mentioned in the book at all.  I'm a bit mixed on whether or not it needs to be...examples show it though not completely.  In any case Fred's blog covers the fractal concept fairly well.  I think the fire was even an example!
You are correct.  The Fractal is not mentioned in the book, but it's an important behind-the-scenes part of FATE that has been expanded upon since the DFRPG book was released.  Understanding it can really help you grow as a GM.

It's a bit of an advanced concept to explain to someone who just wants an overview of the rules, though.  You'll confuse the poor chap.

Yep; Rick Neal's articles were so helpful for the DFRPG when it came out, they put him in the damned index of the book!

Read those.  If you're not sold, you may never be.

Otherwise, good advice in this thread.  *nods*
