DF Reference Collection / Re: The YLC (Why Little Chicago) thread

The only way a coin can be taken up is through Free Will, meaning Sanya made the choice.  Was he influenced?  Absolutely, but he made the choice freely.  At that point in Sanya's timeline, I don't think they (The White God/Knights of the Cross) planned anything regarding him except maybe an eventual death.  When Shiro came along, after Sanya realized what was happening, they saw an opportunity because he had previously freely given up the coin to become a Knight, which he then again, chose freely.  I don't feel that was a long con or a drawn up fate waiting specifically for Sanya, but the combined consequences of all of his freely made choices and actions.

I view PG and SmF as two separate stories, in that the actions of PG did not impact the events of SmF beyond the experience themselves.  Keep in mind also, that if someone on the White God's team stepped in to fix LC, that would mean that somebody on the Fallen Angel's side would've had to have cheated and damaged LC, and on that, we have absolutely no proof.  Uriel says its all about balance, and he can't act before the other side.

So without evidence that the other side cheated, we have no way to argue that somebody working for the White God acted on Little Chicago, even to protect the swords.

While Little Chicago is a interesting mystery to me, I liken it to his Force Rings or Shield Bracelet.  At the beginning of the series, he had his staff and blasting rod and a few knick knacks.  Then, his rings became 3 rings in one n a couple fingers, then by the time changes came around, his bracelet was able to stop physical, thermal, electrical, and magical attacks and his rings were on each finger with at least three on each finger.

This says to me, as a few people have argued, that this was mostly Jim showing us Harry's progression and development as a wizard, and this was the most prominent, mainly due to Bob saying how impressed he was with what Harry had done.

I personally view LC as a rough draft, and we'll eventually see something bigger and better that will have a specific purpose say maybe 3 or 4 books from now

Keep in mind that the runes on the house and tower were able to keep the Skinwalker out, and it was furious as a result.  This to me implies that it not only knew what those runes did, but probably a general guess of the people/being responsible for the runes.  Seeing as the Holy People gave the skin walkers their abilities, it's not too much of a stretch to think they would know how to stop one.  Now what the runes  Holy People of the Amereican Southwest were doing on an island in the middle of Lake Michigan is another question all together

So I have had this thought festering in my head for the past little while, and while I doubt this theory, it gives us a discussion while we wait for Ghost Story.  Now among all the beings we know of with interest in Harry, we need to think of those with both the ability and desire to prevent Harry from frying his brain.  Of those, I submit the following:
Mab
Lasciel
Uriel
Ivy/The Archive

Okay, the easiest to eliminate from these beings is Uriel, because he is only allowed to interfere so much, and he gave Harry the ability to use Soulfire (presumably). If he did or did not is a discussion for another thread. So, strike Riel from the list of suspects.

The next suspect that I can eliminate us Ivy/ The Archive.  Why would Ivy wan to help Harry? Affection, knowledge of him being needed in the future? Who knows.  The ability to fix it would require an insane amount of power, which she has.  The reason for that is that she is completely neutral, and an arbiter of The Accords.  Thus, evn though Ivy would have the desire to help Harry, The Archive can presumably override Ivy, thus the suspect is eliminated.

Now I will try to eliminate Mab.  The reason why I doubt that Mab would fix it is not because of her desire to have Harry as her Knight, but rather why would she? She is Mab, to her, a simple human is nothing, and she could easily allow Harry to blow up his mind, fix him, then say he owes her.  Thus, it stands to reason that she could potentially benefit from Harry blowing up his mind.

Finally, that leaves Lasciel. This immortal being was bound in Harry's basement, less than ten feet from Little Chicago.  I realize that she was bound within several circles, but she is a Denerian, and if there is any being in the Dresdenverese that is allowed to cheat, it would be one of them.  This gives her the opportunity, and finally, the motive would be that a Fallen Angel must be voluntarily accepted by the mortal soul.  If Harry cannot function or freely make the choice choice.  If Harry is brain dead, then Lasciel can't take him over, furthermore, his death means that she is trapped for a pretty long time in the subbasement of a paranoid wizard with some pretty heavy wards protecting it.

Thoughts?

As Laura and itari mentioned, if it was indeed Mab that fixed Little Chicago, it was not a favor that Harry asked for, and it wasn't given to Harry.  In order for the Fey to have power over a mortal, a deal must be agreed to.  Never did Harry ask Mab to fix Little Chicago or4 agree to a deal with her, as far as we know.  Hell, its completely possible that he did in fact ask Mab to fix it and then she decided to wipe his memory of it, thus why we have no knowledge of the act.

Unless that scene plays out, Harry owes Mab nothing, except thanks.

I still maintain that Little Chicago fixed itself, shortly after it achieved sentience.

Where do we ever learn that Little Chicago achieves sentience?

In order for LC to fix itself, as you suggest, then it would stand to reason that Chicago itself has a form of sentience, which I do not think is true.  Highly magical places can have intellectus, and while many boatloads of magic have gone down in Chicago, I think the city is too big for such a thing, and thus by the transitive property that is in play by the small pieces of the larger buildings that are used for Little Chicago, there is now way for the model to gain sentience.

My take:  When Lash rebelled against her originator, the bit of lasciel's energy that was giving Harry access to hellfire was either destroyed of fundamentally changed to the point where it was no longer the same thing...  I.E. Soulfire and Hellfire are 2 sides of the same coin and that coin had now flipped.  So yah he wouldn't have access to hell fire any more (He didn't obviously) and instead he had access to soulfire, he just didn't know it/didn't know how to access it.

The problem I have with this statement is that you are essentially suggesting that a mere imprint of a time immortal being was able to give Harry access to Soulfire.  The reason I think that Lash allowed Harry the use of Hellfire is because that is the nature of the Denarians.  They offer power, and Lasciel herself is known as The Temptress.  If that is her nature, then offering a small sampling of power in exchange for binding his soul is well within her nature, thus the imprint is allowed to give access to Hellfire.

Harry gave Lash, a mere shadow free will, to go against her creator, but to say that the mere shadow that was Lash gave Harry access to Soulfire, and allowed him to use it after she was no longer present within him as far as we know, I find that to be an extreme stretch.

Furthermore, in Turn Coat, Uriel himself converses with Harry, informing him of the good side actually doing something, just not in a noticeable way at first, then Mab appears and gives us a little backstory regarding Uriel.  If Lash gave Harry the ability to use Soulfire, then you are essentially saying that Jim Butcher himself planted Uriel, a freaking Archangel, in the series as a red herring.  Possible? Yes.  But I disagree.

Okay,

So I realize I'm new here, I get that and respect it.

I have noticed that some members have either avatars or display pics that I don't think are part of the menu option, and I can't seem to find a link to link a pic to it on my account page.

So is that something that eventually shows up or reserved for the mods or should I just shut up and deal with it?
