I believe that's only about an hour away from me.  It would be even nicer if I can arrange to not have to be up before dawn the next morning.  :D

Somebody straighten me out, pretty please? I thought GS isn't out until the end of July? Has the date changed, or will attendees get to buy early? I haven't been around much and I'm lost! I do have to travel to Chicago on business next week, and I'll totally detour to Naperville if I can get my hands on a copy of the book...

Also, for the signing at Anderson's, if you want to have your book signed by Jim, you do need to pre-order your copy of the book from Anderson's. Which will then give you a ticket with the number you will be in line.

True, but if you preorder, as Lany79 helpfully noted earlier (Thank you Lany!!!), they give you a ticket number.  I did mine over the phone and the lady, Amanda was her name, was very helpful.

I'm actually going to head up there sometime next week.  I want to scout the area again.  I always have enjoyed the Riverwalk when I went, but I haven't been up to that general area yet this summer.  I'm going specifically to hunt for the best parking spots.  It can get really busy in the summer time.  Mind you, the sights, both the 'Walk and the people, can keep you occupied.

The Anderson shop is actually located the next block over from the River Walk area.  Lots of places to sit, eat, shop, hang out and such.  A fun way to spend a day.

You're quite welcome. I myself will be at #85.

Early would be probably be best for anyone anyway. Downtown Naperville can be quite busy. Especially during rush hour.

I would say any time after 2PM.  Although, with it being summer time, school out and nice weather, even if hot, I expect the walk area to be busy, even for midweek.  Also, considering 7PM still sees the sun in the sky, I expect plenty of folks enjoying the evening.

I'm just planning to spend the day up there.

I'd say early then. As MX said, anytime after 2pm is going start to get busy. You'll want lead time to find parking and get to your location.

I'm more worried about timing when to leave for my interview this week.  :D  It's at 3pm.

There are a bunch of places to eat within walking distance of the bookstore.  Folks can get to the area to early and walk to one of the places to eat.  That way parking won't be an issue when the time comes.

Just a thought :)

It is a little over 140K, according to 2010 census.

Traffic volume tends to be consistent, if lighter, at off-peak hours.  I worked up in this area for roughly two years and it was rare not to see a few cars at a stop light at any given time.  The main travelled road to get places is I59.  It runs almost from I80 up to, iirc, where you and Chiro are inbound from.

I would recommend that the two of you arrive earlier rather than later if the traffic may bother you.  A bit of advance notice as well: the street the bookstore doesn't have an overabundance of parking spots.  It looks to be more like something I see here in downtown Morris.

I'll be heading up that way either today(Tuesday) or Wednesday to see what I can see.  I'm gonna stop in the bookstore too to have a look around.

I'm hoping it's like the Tardis: bigger on the inside cause we are going to fill it, methinks.

I believe I have to wait until Chiro gets off work, I think. I'm free all day, but I think that'll be around 4 or 330 in the afternoon arriving in Dundee, so we may not get there until around 430? is it an hour from Dundee?

I'm thinking the same thing...wow I hope I didn't lose my number, I thought I had it on the counter, now I don't remember.

Yep :)  Roughly an hour, counting traffic.  Regarding your number, just call the place back and tell them your name, they should have your number in the system.  I was only told my number via phone.  I'm sure they will have something there.  They do a lot of author signings, from what I see at their site.

I remembered what it was after seeing Chiro's number, I was 4 behind her, I'm 120 :D I remember thinking if I'd done this before, I would have called before my surgery to get my book (back in beginning of July) and would have been smarter, but duh, I've never done this so, I ended up with 120. but I was told they do it in groups of 20, so I should be in the same group as Chiro, and I think GW too or was it you? I don't recall anymore, it's past my bedtime. :D

Sorry, no :(  It's not going to be like the signing for TC.  To have a book signed, you have to order from Andersons.  When you buy the book, they give you a number.  They line up folks according to those numbers for signatures.  If you would, take a look at on page 2 of this thread.  Emgirl, Lany, Chiro, Alilisa and myself have all pre-ordered and received numbers.

Actually, I am glad it won't be like that last signing in this area.  Lots of people arrived very early that day to check into the store and several of the staff I talked to said you could just show up.  Well, it turns out they were giving out wrist bands showing your order of arrival.  Some people had been there, like me, for hours but ended up being closer to the end for signatures because of the lack of information on the bookstore's part.  I would think they were unprepared excepting the fact that they had plenty of books for all.  That just tells me whoever was in charge didn't manage things correctly.

You're as bad as me, GW, I thought the same until Chiro told me!  you have to call the store and they give you a number...wait...are you just joking around with me...or serious?  *unsure whether to give you the "evil eye" or the "surprised eye" so just gives you "the eye" to be safe*.

MX, does the order we get things signed..oh wait..no in order to get a place to sit for the Q&A we have to be there way early don't we...shoot...with Chiro working not sure how early we can get there, that'll be a problem. Do they still let people be there even without a chair, for the Q&A though?

I'm actually about to head up that way now, so I'll ask about that.  I don't see why they wouldn't let folks stand, especially as you purchased the book, but I'll check.  If you two will be there around 430, I don't see how you won't get a seat.

I hope so, I know they said if I needed a seat while standing in line (cuz since the surgery I have had trouble with sitting for long periods of time, I haven't tried standing for long periods :D, but I should be ok) they'd get me a chair if I needed it.  I'm hoping I don't, I don't really want to put anyone out, nor act like a baby ;D

Thank you, MX, I appreciate it!

You're 29 behind me, kira-marie, that's not too bad then!

This is my first time at any signing, so I'm not a good one to ask, and Im not sure what time we'll be getting there, it depends on Chiro's work schedule, I'm picking her up in Dundee, so hopefully MX or someone else can answer that for you. I'm sorry.

I have a folding chair Lisa.  :D  I wonder if they'd let me bring it in.

I'll probably be able to tell you closer to time when I'll get back from work - it's all over the place right now because we're doing vegetation analysis but we are finishing up that week.  Typically I'm back here between 2 and 3 and just need half an hour to get a quick shower and put on non-disgusting clothes.
Title: Re: Signing in Chicago (Naperville), IL on 7/27
Post by: MX on July 19, 2011, 11:12:29 PM
Ok, just got back into town after the trip.

Kira, I will be in the area, if not in the store, around 11.  I don't see why you couldn't get the book when they open at 9 and find a quiet spot and read.  Also, if the weather is nice, the Riverwalk has a lot of places to go and sit outside, if that is appealing in any fashion.  There is also a starbucks a short walk away as well as several grills and a steak house.  I'll be having my lunch there, I think.

Onto store and parking info.

There is a chance that there will not be any chairs put out at all.  Reason being is they clear out the back of the store and use that.  It is not a huge place and I think the almost 150 now pre-ordered, as of the time I stopped in, might strain the place as it is.  Anyone can attend the Q+A, but only those whom pre-order or purchase the book that day will be able to sign.  I recommend pre-order as I am not sure how many 'extra' books will be on hand.  I forgot to ask, sorry.

Now, some decent news.

While I was there, there were two small groups, three and five people, sitting on the floor having what looked to be a book discussion of some sort.  They weren't part of the store staff, but it appears they were awaiting the signing tonight.

There also appears to be plenty of parking, if scattered along the surrounding blocks.  There are big parking lots designated Riverwalk parking.  There is also parking along the street and also at the Nichols library right down the road, although I would say to avoid that as we aren't technically using the library, even though we are interested in books :)

The only problem I see with parking is the time allowed.  The parking along the street states two hours only.  The parking in the Riverwalk designated areas state 3 hours.  I spoke with several folks on the street and staff in the store.  The common info was that yes, they do watch it, but are not metered as such.

I still plan on going up early, but I will probably rotate my car around to a few different spots and end up parking it in one of the Riverwalk zones around 5PM.  That will allow an hour past the start time and should give enough time to get back to the car.  Personally, I don't think there will be any issues, but I wanted to share my info with all of you.  Also, if anyone doesn't feel comfortable walking to their car alone, I would offer to walk with you in a group.  I'm not a huge guy, but I can at least be a deterrent of sorts.

Chiro, or anyone else of course, please let me know what your thoughts are if/when you go take a look.  I would appreciate a second viewpoint :)

Do you know if the 2/3 hour parking rule holds all day?  (I know some of those things change in the evening).

There is also a free parking garage a few blocks east next to the Barnes and Noble bookstore.

I'll be going in to the store on Tueday morning to pick up my copy of the book (what can I say, I can't wait to read it).

I will be off all day on Wednesday, however, so if someone does indeed want to meet a little early to get something to eat, I'm available.

Ooohhh call and ask that way you can sit even if we don't get a place to sit for the Q&A, Chiro ;D  Hey, if you want, I can drive through a sprinkler somewhere, bring along some shower gel and then on the rest of the way you can hang your head out the window *snickers* J/K.  That sounds good to me, that would put us down there around...5 or 530, right?

I'm trying to decide now about what to wear...I got an idea from someone, but......*just grins, looking over my shoulder at the stuff on the couch*  should I or shouldn't I?  :D

That's great news, GW, glad to hear it!

Thanks, Lany, now if we can figure out where that is in regards to the bookstore we'll be at.  As for getting something to eat, if Chiro wants, I'll leave it up to her to decide if she wants to have supper with others too, I'm game for anything. :)

Thank you, MX, I'm afraid I won't be driving down early (3 hour drive for me and if I get lost.....7 hour drive ;D).  Thank you though, that helps a lot!

I'm definitely happy with the idea of meeting others for food.

I'm hoping we can get there by 4 or 4:30.  I can get ready pretty quickly - I just need to wash off the sweat and five layers of sunscreen, and pick off any ticks.  :D

So what are you thinking of wearing?  That sounds suspicious....  :P

It's easy enough Alilisa. Anderson's is located on West Jefferson Avenue. From the book shop, you'll want to head east on Jefferson until you reach Washington St. From there, hang a right (south) onto Washington. You'll go another block until you reach Chicago Ave., which will be a left (east) hand turn. On the corner of Washington and Chicago Ave. is a Barnes and Nobles. Heading down Chicago Ave., just past the Barnes and Noble is the parking garage. There will be an overhanging sign on the entrance that will tell you just how much parking is available inside the lot.

Just a quick cut/paste job here.  There is a pic of the garage to the bottom right in the link above with the Anderson bookstore noted with an A in a pink circle in the upper left.  As Lany stated, just a couple blocks.

To give you a looksee, I would suggest using google maps.  Type the address to the store and then zoom in to street view and follow the path Lany stated above.  That will give you the actual driving view you would take to get to the garage.

I'll be going in to the store on Tueday morning to pick up my copy of the book (what can I say, I can't wait to read it).

I'm with ya there.  I have a book pre-ordered here in town, too, as my niece is a fan as well.  I am her 'connection' hehe.  I'll have one to read Tuesday before going up there and one to send her way.

I had their amaretto gelato - it was wonderful.  There's also a pizzeria a couple doors down from the bookstore.

I did notice that the two hour parking is 6am - 6pm - someone who knows the area, does that mean that after 6pm it's unlimited?  They do say there is unlimited time free parking on some of the parking decks, but I'm not sure which ones.

Well, Chiro, guess it's you and me and amaretto gelato, or possibly the pizzeria, we'll figure that out once we get down there, how's that?  :D  If anyone else wants to join us, they can let us know here, or in a message, they have a few days yet, but we'd love to get together with others if they'd like to meet us somewhere for supper/dinner.

I'm up for it :)  What was the plan?  Meet at wherever to eat or meet at the book store first?  The only thing I am thinking about is how fast the store will fill up.  I really should have stuck around for the signing Tuesday just to see how that played out, but it was a young adult auther so I didn't think that would correspond quite the same.

Little more info for Anderson's Bookstore

Drinks are allowed, especially as there is a Starbucks right across the street.  Eating is allowed, but there is no place to actually sit and eat.  I can verify that as I was in there this week.  Basically, I would say something along the lines of a small sub or a sandwich, maybe popcorn :p

They also have restrooms so that is a bonus.  I wanted to make sure folks didn't have to scramble at the last minute to go someplace else.

The lady said with this turnout, over 160 books currently reserved for signing, the chairs will not be put out as they take up too much space.  That, of course, is not even counting those folks coming in only for the Q&A.  She stated it would be standing room only.

Food for thought, such as it is.

Naperville Long-Term Parking

After 9 a.m. all-day parking is available in the following locations:
Central Parking Facility:  Level 3
Van Buren Parking Deck:  Level 2 – Roof Level
Municipal Center Parking Deck:  Weekdays (after 5 p.m.) and Saturday, Lower Level and Upper Level

So, it sounds as if the Central and Van Buren lots are safe to park in for an extended time period, on the upper levels, in case someone wants a place to park without worrying about the 2-3 hour limit.

I found this, I don't know if it helps or not, Chiro

Helpful hints for parking in Downtown Naperville:

Parking is FREE everywhere in Downtown Naperville including municipal lots, parking decks and on-street spaces.

There are 2 parking garages (Central Parking Facility & Van Buren Parking Deck) and numerous surface lots and on-street parking with posted time allotments.

The Municipal Parking Deck is also available after 5pm Monday thru Friday and all weekend.

Generally, the time allotment for on-street parking is 2 hours, parking lots are 3 hours, and decks range from 3 hours to unlimited parking.

There are no time restrictions on any handicapped parking spaces in Downtown Naperville.

Washington Street on-street parking is available form 8:30am to 4pm Monday through Friday. After 4pm on weekdays,
cars parked on the street will be towed.

Yeah, that same thing happened to me.  The nice thing about that Oakbrook Borders though (may it rest in peace soon) was that there was plenty of room...it's far larger than Anderson's.

I had kept my eye on the Oakbrook Borders webpage to see if there'd be a signing for this release.  Once this was announced I put two and two together and figured Borders would not be long for this world.

I didn't get around to pre-ordering so I'm sure if I did it now I'd get a crazy high number and be in line all night.  Can't do that with two kids very easily.  I think they will be surprised with how many people Jim draws.  I went to a Rick Reilly signing there last year and it didn't draw too many.

MX  what if we brought the pizza to the store, would you want some?

The thought is appreciated, but cheese is just something that I shouldn't have.  If I ate it, I might need to miss the signing.

If we all still want to meet at the book store first and see how things are, that would be cool.  I would be more than happy to walk with folks to grab something if it doesn't look busy then.  Just don't do it just on my account.  Still want to meet all of you :)

At the least, I'm going to wear my Harry Dresden is My Hero pin from the last signing and a Stone Cold hat.  It has the writing Arrive, Raise Hell, Leave on the back of the hat.  I don't have any cool costumes in the closet, though.  At least none that work well in this heat :(

My current plan is to get up there early and have lucnh at a steakhouse in the area.  Then I plan on stopping in the bookstore for a bit and probably walking around till about two or so then head back to the store.

Btw, the hat I'll have on has a skull on the front, too.  Kinda fitting as this is Ghost Story and a character whom resides in a skull is a part of the Dresden files.  Stone Cold fits on there soomewhere too, now that I think about it.

Another of "The Group"  We had a GREAT Time! Oh and for anyone who wants to know, YES, the basket did have everything in it, a gun, a knife, garlic, a tape recorder (which I used), 3, yes THREE crosses, and HOLY WATER! OH and btw, it even had the invitation (see below)

Chiro getting book signed (I couldn't get a decent pic from face view of both, sorry!)

Ok the level of detail in that red riding hood costume rocks.  I especially love the invitation (and the tape recorder, see PM)

Thank you, Serack, I was so excited, ended up doing most of the costume by hand, ended up hand stitching it the night before because I went and washed the cloak thinking it was going to rain (it didnt) and that the fabric would run, and the seam bonding came apart on it. :D

Here's the contents of Susan's basket I used, minus the invite which I already posted above, I found a really cute heart shaped basket (how appropriate ;D).

Does anyone have an estimate of how many folks showed up and now late Jim was signing?
Title: Re: Signing in Chicago (Naperville), IL on 7/27

There were almost 375 at last count for signing only.  I would say somewhere in the neighborhood of 450 maybe?  If you count some folks that came along for the ride maybe.

I had an awesome time last night meeting everyone :)  I also have a vid that I am working on breaking down to put on YouTube, but I may have to step out to pick up a separate video program to shrink the files.  I'm having a bit of an issue in regards to that one little fact :-[

I'll post a couple pictures when  get that up as well, along with the any pics I have of the gang :)

Not sure how late, exactly, Jim was signing. I think it was about 9pm ish when they were round 150 or something like that? I know that Jim said he'd stay around after everyone's number had come up and sign more stuff, if people had more than just the book they bought, and one they brought from home, which is what the staff was allowing in the intial signing so that everyone could get through.

*just dies with laughter* I just realized Pris meant how late he was there.  I don't remember, Chiro, MX, and I left shortly after getting our books signed, I was #119, and with having over 375-400, I'd say maybe....11, or maybe later?  They seemed to be going pretty quickly and they were only in the very beginning (1-50?), we'd left the shop for a short time to grab something to eat and when we returned we were supposed to be up in line already, and we weren't really gone that long.

Did your Recording, the voice recording, come out, MX?  Believe it or not (remember me telling you how I'd lost the one recorder and bought another, then when we arrived down there the first one was in the basket?  It happened again, I can't find the one with the recording on it!!!)

I'm glad we left when we did, I hit a horrible storm on the way back and ended up driving 30 or so mph down I-90 on the way back for quite a distance.

Aww thank you, Dina, I LOVED doing the costume, you make me blush!  thank you so much, we did have such a good time....*Looks to the others, then whispers* at least I did, maybe I just embarrased the rest of them *snickers*

I'm glad you two made it back ok :)  I'll admit to being a bit concerned for you and Chiro driving back that late.  I drove pretty slow through the cruising zone to see if the rest of our lil group was hanging out, but came up with zero.

The recording came out sweet.  I played it through my bluetooth connection in the car on the way home and again through hdmi to my TV at home.  Nothing but net :)  Very loud and I didn't perceive any distortion.  The video looks really good on a 50 inch too.The problem with the sound is the speaker on the phone itself, I think.  There is a fix to it, but I have to wait to get root access to it, which is officially coming in August/September.

The only question is going to be how the compression down to an uploadable format occurs.  I want something that won't hurt the resolution much, but also isn't a PITA to upload.  ETA is still tomorrow.  I WILL get it done :)

Chiro was probably glad to get back to some peace and quiet (without me talking so much :D) I didn't realize when I got on I-90 that there were two lanes during the construction and got stuck behind a truck driving 45 constantly in the construction zone, after the storm!  Ooooohhhh but the lightning was soooo beautiful, and bright at times.

I can't wait to see the video, I'm so excited.. Thanks, MX!

The Ms. and I will be dressed as Ms. Gard and Butters respectively.  We plan on getting there some time between 5:30 and 6 (depending on traffic, Google maps has us getting there at 5) so dinner sounds good.  I just discovered Jim last year so this is my first signing.  ;D
You guys were awesome!! Loved the conversation and the costumes! How great was JB, right?! I'm going to try to get the pics up tonight.

I have uploaded the Naperville Q&A onto YouTube.  There are three parts that run a total of about 40 minutes.  Lots and lots of great stuff here :)  Recording was done from the ground up with my Evo 3D, so the angle is a bit different than what some may be used to seeing.  The second vid started out without seeing Jim, but that is brief and I made adjustments to correct for the rest of the Q&A.

One thing I did, to make it quicker on the upload for my somewhat meager connection here in town, was to go down to 320x240 at 15 FPS.  It makes it stutter, but not much.  Audio is still great, which was the main thrust of recording it.  Without further ado, here are the links to the three videos:

Yes, that was a ton of fun last night.  And I still have fruit left over from Lou Malnati's.

Em, is that him then in the blue scrubs, you're to the left? (our left from this angle)

You looked great, Chiro, I finished my sandwich and all for lunch today, it was still delicious!  And yes, got home around 1:15 this morning, but least I made it and only got lost twice,  nearly headed back to Chicago both times...hmmmm....is Harry calling Susan back? ;D

Jim is just funny in real life, and seemed really friendly.  I just wish we got to spend more time.

Love Naperville.  Pretty much a backyard for me, even if an hour away.  Easy way to spend a day with lots to do.

That being said, if there is a signing this year, I fully expect it not to hit Chicagoland.  IIRC, signings tend not to hit the same general areas two years in a row.

Not saying I wouldn't love to see it happen :)

A good point. I remember that there was a signing for Turn Coat and then no signing in the Chicago area the following year for Changes.
