Site Suggestions & Support / Re: Why are threads locked?
« on: September 18, 2013, 02:07:37 PM »
The boards used to stay open indefinitely and it was too big a strain on the servers.  So now threads in the Bar lock after a week and in other places they lock after a set period of inactivity.  Then after a certain time they get deleted.  You can restart a thread if you want to, no one minds.

I have never in my years around here seen a single instance of anyone being accused of troll like behavior or spoiling anything with a WAG.  Mainly because most times we qualify the statements as WAGs right at the start.  I think you're worrying about nothing really. ;)  If you really are worried about someone's potential reaction just do what I do and start a thread with WAG right in the title.

Yes there was warning, but it's not that simple.  Someone would say, I'm making point A, then another poster would ask for proof, bam up would pop a link to an interview.  Unless you could remember the name of the link, the interview, something like that....poof.  They weren't always labeled Jim Butcher said this, sometimes it was as simple as "I read it.", "Where?", "Here." and there was the link for all to follow.  Hell's Bells, the only reason anyone knows so much was lost was because of those of us who can remember what we want to quote, or link to, and it no longer exists. ;)

Why are some of the WoJ's only linked anyways? Is it because of space?

I also never got why so many WoJ's were lost with the forum purge. I would have thought people would have been hoarding those things like they were gold.
Because a lot of times they were links to external websites, pasted in to prove a posters point.  And more were lost in the purge than I think anyone knew would get lost.  There were close to a thousand pages of spoiler threads, nothing was ever deleted.  And people could pull a link from a thread with a key word search and never really know what thread it was in, or more the point how far back it was.  People made an effort for the most recent pages, but page 875...you don't think about it so much.  There was also some loss I believe when the site migrated to a new server.  There were some great big stuttering crashes around that time, and I think gobs were lost then.

I just start my digital recorder and let it roll.  Last signing I zapped a link to the great and powerful Serack and he found someone to transcribe it.  So as long as it gets transcribed you can read it no problem.  I could post it whole somewhere but it's a huge file, and slicing it up is too big a nightmare for me.

I'm also planning on making just an audio mp3 recording like last year.  I'll send it on to via WOJ to anyone who wants to transcribe it.

I just spoke to Rainy Day.  They say that Jim is still recovering and that the signing will be rescheduled for sometime in January, but that they don't have a date confirmed yet.  But sometime in January is still some news anyway. :)

Sadly, I have to agree with Shecky. A rule like the suggested one would make my life much easier, as English is my third language, but it would be unfair and perhaps annoying for many people.
You're being too humble Dina.  Your English has improved by leaps and bounds since you started around here, the only time the third language thing shows anymore is when you don't grasp a cultural nuance that a native speaker just "gets".  I doubt that most new posters even have any idea that English isn't your first language. :)

Nobody said that to you at all.  And heading to the Country Club Plaza at Christmas is a big deal for anyone, in Kansas City or not.

I don't know who you talked to there, but the four people I have dealt with all said the same thing, that they hoped it would be the 11'th but it wasn't confirmed with Jim's people yet.  You can look back and see that I posted that on the 8'th.  They have been clear at every step that they didn't know, and would pass along info as they got it.

I'm sorry this has left such a bad taste in your mouth, but if the number of people that mistakenly thought the signing was on again was only about 12 out of over (given my line number) 300, I don't think that really points to a huge problem.

Um, I don't know what to say.  Like my post above said Rainy Day very specifically told me that the 11'th was not happening.  Even at the first "signing" when I went to pick up my book they made it clear that they were hoping for the 11'th but to check with the store first.  They told me, and everyone else that was in line at the same time, to sign up for the newsletter or call the store for more info.  That's how I found out he'd had to go back to the hospital.

cheshirecatsith, I'm sorry this happened to you, but I've never had anything but good experiences with RDB in 20 something years of living in KC.

Edit because I can't spell worth a crap at 4:30 am. ;)

Wow, no kidding too soon.  I called Rainy Day and they said he's gone back in the hospital.  They are hoping to know more around the 13'th.  They said they are trying to work on getting some books signed for the people who wanted to give them as Christmas gifts, but they don't have any idea yet about him speaking.

At least it's the hometown event, it's makes it far easier to hope it doesn't get cancelled out right.

And here's a good holiday wish...get better soon Jim, being that sick is a horrible way to spend your holidays.

You're welcome.  I didn't realize there is one that attaches to Unity on the right side when looking at it.  I haven't driven in from that direction before.  Man, did I get turned around inside of there coming in from the back.  If you park in the attached garage you come in a floor off by the organic restaurant.

Is anyone going to be coming out anyway to pick up their books?
Yes, I'm just going to run by for it.  I already cancelled the babysitting helper so I'll only have 20 minutes to get there grab it and get back to the skating party.  I'm not going to wait until the rescheduled to read it...two days has been bad enough! ;)
