DF Spoilers / Re: Who was the real target of the bloodline curse at CI?

You need to capture a blood descendant for the curse to work. Maggie presented an opportunity.

I'm not sure that the White Council would be aware of that limitation (or be in such a state of mind as to care about it).

Just as Harry's reputation as a badass is overblown among the Red Court, so might have been the Red Court's reputation among the White Council.

I bet Thorned Namshiel could have cast such a curse, and then the Denarians made a point of saying it was done by a saint.

Hell propaganda, 101.

An interesting theory. Is there anything that suggests a connection between Thorned Namshiel and the MacFinns?

Likewise, it doesn't take a particularly huge amount of power to create such a curse, just a lot of skill.

Incorrect. According to Bob...

Quote
Someone has cursed them to become a wolflike demon, and usually at the full moon. That someone's got to be really powerful, too, like a major heavy-weight sorcerer or a demon lord or one of the Faerie Queens.

Why would a curse inflicted by a major heavy-weight sorcerer, demon lord, or Faerie Queen rather than by TWG be attributed to St. Patrick? Or was St. Patrick himself a major heavy-weight sorcerer?

That could be because, as a demon, he can't make clear statements about anything TWG does; and based on what Bob said about how much power it takes to cast the Loup-garou curse on one person, let alone an entire bloodline, it was almost certainly TWG who had cursed the MacFinns.

This reminds me: The MacFinn loup-garou has existed for centuries (since the days of St. Patrick, according to legend), yet loup-garou massacres are extremely rare occurrences according to Bob. So it seems reasonable to suppose that every MacFinn loup-garou in history would have known how to restrain himself during the full moon, including the current one (as evidenced by the lack of loup-garou massacres since Harley's).

Does that make it more or less likely that Fitz is the (or perhaps just a) current MacFinn loup-garou?

DF Spoilers / The curse on MacFinn

Chauncy said in "Fool Moon" that according to legend, St. Patrick cursed the MacFinn bloodline to become loup-garou, passing from generation to generation, and that the cursed bloodline would last until the end of days.

In light of this, I see four possibilities:

1. Chauncy was lying.
2. The legend was inaccurate.
3. The end of days had already arrived as of the end of "Fool Moon", ending the curse on the MacFinn bloodline.
4. Harley MacFinn's death did not make his bloodline extinct; he had at least one younger relative, who inherited the curse.

DF Spoilers / Re: harry killed another mortal with magic in Cold days

I don't think that what Molly or Hannah did is really relevant to killing a shapeshifted human who is under the influence of the Wild Hunt, since in Molly's case it wasn't killing, and in Hannah's case her victims weren't shapeshifted.

I maintain that the closest comparison to what the Wild Hunt does to humans (if it doesn't kill them) would be a werewolf curse, and that killing someone who is in the Wild Hunt would have similar effects on the killer to killing a werewolf.

And Harry had already gotten away with killing a werewolf.

DF Spoilers / Re: Could Harry have awoken something in Changes?

The Fomor were definitely more active after Changes as a direct result of the Red Court's extinction. But whether they had actually been asleep before or just kept in check by the Red Court is probably just a technicality at this point.

Personally, I don't think someone who's shapeshifted + being driven by beast-like mental influence counts.

Which reminds me of the Hexenwulf and the Loup-garou. I don't think Harry got any black marks on his soul for using a magical amulet infused with his will to strike the killing blow on MacFinn, for example. Thus, either infusing a piece of silver with your will and using it to kill doesn't count as using magic to kill, or a Loup-garou in wolf form doesn't count as a human. Or both.

And I'm pretty sure that infusing an object with your will for a specific purpose is the definition of using magic, and therefore what Harry did to MacFinn with his amulet in "Fool Moon" was using magic to kill.

How many people within earshot of Harry when he shouted his own name knew about conjuration?

And how many of those people would have the nerve to conjure by Harry's name?

Technically, anyone is capable of genocide if somebody else builds a genocide weapon and doesn't keep proper track over where it's pointed.

Anyone astute enough to know and/or care about that technicality would most likely be pretty cautious about conjuring by Harry's name anyway. Such a person would already know that conjurations can be hijacked and used against the conjurer.

For everyone else, who might benefit from a further example of "Piss Harry off at your own risk," Chichen Itza is as good an example as any.

I'm not sure there would be specific consequences for summoning Dresden, other than a very pissed off Harry Dresden.

Which, given that "a very pissed off Harry Dresden" has been capable of genocide since "Changes," is deterrent enough.

At one of the recent signings, my son asked Jim about that.  He said it was effectively unlimited in height.  Suggesting that there is no top to the circle.

I'm sure it wouldn't be relevant to the story, but I'm sure there must be some meteorological or astronomical limit to the circle's height. Otherwise, every circle is basically an anti-magic ray that shoots out to the edge of the material universe.

Not that that wouldn't be awesome, but I would expect an anti-magic ray with an infinite range to be a bit harder to build...

Couldn't Kumori have been 15 in Dead Beat? Some 15-year-olds are biologically adult.

But come on, we all know that Kumori is actually little Jenny Sells all grown up and trying to fix the world after her father ruined her life. (/sarcasm)

Why the sarcasm? She could be Jenny Sells, couldn't she?
