DF Spoilers / Re: What is a Saint? (Series Spoilers)
« on: June 07, 2017, 03:41:57 PM »
Grain of salt on that one is that the context of the mention was a Demon placing blame for a centuries-old murderous Curse on said famous Saint, and several forumites over the years have expressed skepticism given the infernal source.  Hell, harry expresses skepticism for the same reason.

Yup. Chauncy even said "legend has it". Given the importance of free will, I give it pretty close to zero chance someone could remain saintly after laying a curse that compels an entire bloodline of people to turn into murderous beasts.

I've said it before, but my bet is that 'legend' was propaganda laid by the other side, probably the Denarians.

But given The Sleepers as introduced directly in Cold Case, and their current prison, I have doubts that they'd be subject to the same sort of Anchor requirement; theirs isnt an issue of getting to the Mortal Worlds from teh NN, its to get to the World as a whole from Outside, and once they make it inside I dont think they require the same anchor to Mortal Consciousness that a NN spirit/godling/etc does.  But I have nothing but abstract conjecture to support that.

As I understand it, the Outsiders are the Sleepers' minions, cut off from their rulers and trying to get back to them (and maybe, specifically, to wake them up?).

I'm not sure whether beings kicked out of the world by the Archive deleting the last awareness of their existence go to a NN pocket dimension, go Outside and join the original Sleeper loyalists for the sake of common cause, or end up 'asleep' in not-particularly-special parts of the NN (like Harry tried to explain to Charity in PG that a lot of the pagan gods that humanity still has awareness of were real, but for practical purposes inactive due to timey-wimey reasons).

DF Spoilers / Re: Lara-Nemesis-Oblivion War
« on: May 25, 2017, 01:23:59 AM »
You say her mother was murdered? Do you have a source for that?  As I recall, Ivy's mother was young(upper teens maybe twenty something?) and in love, when her mother was killed in a car crash, Ivy's mom flipped out over becoming the Archive and no longer having "her" life, that as soon as Ivy was born, she committed suicide.

The bit about Ivy's grandmother being murdered isn't confirmed by WOJ, it's just a widely held forum theory that the car "accident" was artificially induced, on the basis that the Archive's host would be a compulsively cautious driver and able to shield against any accident she had any warning of. People generally attribute the presumed hit to either one of the opposition factions in the Oblivion War trying to shuffle the deck to get a less effective coordinator for the Venatori Umbrorum, or Nic trying to lay groundwork for a plot against Ivy's mom on broadly similar terms to what they tried in SmF, but he miscalculated just how badly she'd take it (which would explain why Kincaid hates Nic, since he was friends with Ivy's mom).

Personally, I'm not entirely sold on the whole theory. It's definitely plausible, but so is the accident just being random.

DF Spoilers / Re: Cowl's Identity [FPOTM2 11.2016]
« on: November 20, 2016, 04:53:35 AM »
I'm still thinking Christos with all his mysterious past, political control and enough power to be SC. I think his misguided attempts to stop death put him in the Circle camp with Nico and his attempt to become a saint.

I'd put money on Nico being against the Circle, not with them.

Normally I would have voted for Simon, but I have a feeling that Harry can't sense anything familiar about Cowl. By now I'd figured he'd run into just about every Wizard at least once, or could at least recognized the style of magic.

He might well not have encountered Simon ever actually doing anything. The only time they would for sure have been in the same place would be when he sat on Harry's trial, and Harry had a bag over his head and only caught enough to guess who voted to kill him and who to spare him.

It's possible Simon might have paid Eb a visit while Harry was living on the farm, since they were friends. But even if he did, he'd have to have been doing a fairly major spell while there for Harry to learn much of a sense of his power to recognize it again later.

"There you are":  I'm considering a section of speculative foreshadowing, but that's a bit of a rabbit hole.

For what it's worth, his landlady made some sort of 'there you are' comment when he saved her from the house fire in Changes.

It won't be large enough for a true spire nation, but it could act as an outpost for activities on the surface, I am imagining giant tree house complexes. We have all heard the dangers of the surface, so they would need safe havens if they wish to visit the ground on a long term basis.

Gwen's explanation of the Aurorans' once-a-generation cycle of aggression suggests they do periodically conquer other nations' outposts, so smaller structures than full spires must exist. The question is whether these outposts are smaller spirestone towers built to a similar design, or constructed after the cataclysm either within trees or from heavy masonry.

Dresden being related is a stretch, since the whole legion was swallowed.  He'd have to have been related to a family member that wasn't swallowed by the portal 2000 years in advance.  Just stretches the imagination.

Not necessarily that much of a stretch. The 9'th legion disappeared from Britain roughly contemporaneous with some of the feats attributed to the original Merlin; he could easily have lost a parent, child or sibling among its numbers. And many fans suspect the chain of mentor-pupil relationships linking Merlin to Ebenezar McCoy consists of wizards training their own offspring.

Unless that WoJ about Harry and Tavi sharing a bloodline exists, which i don't know.

The WOJ in question was that a fan asked if there was a shared bloodline, and Jim gave a really sarcastic denial along the lines of "I'd neeevveerr do something like thaaat".

So it's not admitted to, but he was definitely winking at the possibility.

Changes
... I have to leave off at this point cuz i don't have pdf files for the rest of the books, I got kindle app for them and they don't allow me to copy and paste.  I'll return here.

I believe his landlady said something similar during the fire.

There's a WoJ floating around that it isn't a coincidence that the warden cloaks are grey and match Alfred's.

Wait, what? His cloak is described as dark green in the end of GS, or just dark in most other appearances. I think Harry would have mentioned if it matched the Warden issue ones.

I thought he meant that the term "Warden" used to refer to the White Council police force is a nod to the position of DR's Warden.

That was strongly my interpretation.

Some people might question how the spirit is aware of something off the island like the Council's military force, but I don't find it unreasonable that the information flow through which Harry accesses the island's intellectus might be two-way (i.e. Alfred can access Harry's knowledge of the outside world).

Reginal Astor makes a certain amount of sense. He bolted pretty quickly when the air raid siren went off - even lost his own second from the duel. Makes me wonder if he had warning.

And of course, it would make a certain amount of scheming sense for the number two House in the Spire to think they could play the Aurorans against the Spirearch and the Lancasters, and expect to come out on top as head of a puppet government in league with the Aurorans after they win the war.

Presumable they have tree Farms (or at least known harvesting spots) along those lines.

They must have something to supply ship construction. If the surface is really that bad, they'd run out of people before "walk out into the jungle, cut something down, drag it back" supplied enough wood for airships and the shipyard/docks complex at Landing.

I'd guess at some sort of fortifications around the bases of the spires to make lumberjacking merely very dangerous instead of totally suicidal. Maybe stone-enclosed fortified paths / tunnels out to the lumbering areas, and bunkers they can hide in if any of the wildlife gets too inquisitive.

Cinder Spires Spoilers / Re: The Index
« on: October 12, 2015, 02:08:43 AM »
Basic hypothesis? The Index was the Library's catalog, and the 'frozen souls' left behind in written works can be accessed and controlled through the authors' names. The Wayist monks probably had one of the largest libraries in the world, and hence their catalog would be one of the bigger bites of power available.
