DFRPG / Could a wizard turn himself into a WCV?
« on: March 09, 2011, 04:00:51 AM »
I have been thinking about this for a while now, but assuming that a wizard has enough refresh to buy the powers (I know, I know, not optimizing by dumping all available refresh into refinement), would it be possible to find the class of demon that are bound to WCV, summon it, and then either make a deal with it or just bind it outright to himself.  I feel like this would be able to go a long way to help out some of the darker wizards by giving them inhuman+ stats, and a type of Neuromancy that wouldn't be breaking the Laws of Magic.  Hell if he got the support of a House or started one of his own that got recognized by the Court the Wardens wouldn't be able to touch him anyway.  Is it even possible though (and I can't think of a reason that it couldn't be)?

DFRPG / Could Sponsored Magic cause "mutations"
« on: February 12, 2011, 09:03:00 PM »
Ok, please stick with me for this.  If a someone who wasn't a scion, changeling, had wizard's constitution, or marked by power; picked up sponsored magic somehow, would it be a possible for changes to occur to their body because of the alien energies flowing through them?  The character in question has been gifted with Summer Magic but is a Knight of the Cross.  People who become Fae Knights have to take Marked by Power which I could see as having a secondary trapping of filtering the energies associated with the sponsor so that they don't completely screw up the mortal vessel.  If someone didn't have that to refine the energies or a better than human constitution to take care of the damages, could they begin to change physically in a way that would befit the sponsor?  Seelie/Unseelie would become slightly fae like in appearance, and depending upon whether they took any powers could possibly be mistaken for a changeling.  Locations could cause the person to look more in line with the "feel" of the location (volcanos could appear to have embers in their eyes, skin could become ashen, etc.), Hellfire wielders might begin to look demonic, and Soulfire users could appear to be angelic.

What are your thoughts on this?  Mechanically I could see this as a way to justify buying creature powers and possibly at a very advanced stage inhuman-supernatural stats.  Fluff-wise, it could be a very interesting story to see this character change the more they use their power, and further separating them from humanity (actually, you could buy off debt with mutations-non power mutations that is, you don't get anything for going into debt).

DFRPG / ...I Have the Power!
« on: February 09, 2011, 08:34:38 PM »
So this started off as a joke but it turned into something kind of fun.  I, at my friend's request, have created the Sword of Power from the He-Man cartoon and comics.  I know that this doesn't immediately fit the feel of the Dresden-verse, but I could actually see a creative GM and player making it work.  So here is what I came up with, thoughts, opinions?  Oh, you do have to be a mortal to wield it....it has an extremely high refresh cost.

Sword of Power

What it is:  Bastard Sword, +3 weapon
Powers:

Beast Change (this is the closest thing that I found to being able to change from mortal to superhuman) -1, Mythic Strength -6, Supernatural Toughness -4 (catch might be magic but I don't know, I am open to suggestions, +2), Righteousness -2:  Total cost of Beast Change:  -11

Human Form +1

IoP rebate +2

Total Cost:  -8 (If the character has the Refresh this should also be able to grant Inhuman Speed, as the character is shown to be quicker than human, bringing the total cost to -10)

I was also thinking that you could use Mouse's Stats for Battlecat, I don't know how you would do his transformation though....maybe as being separate from the sword, or maybe give the Cringer character a collar that acts as an IoP and turns him into Battlecat and itself into the armor.  Don't have to go that far though, could just give the character the sword.  I also was debating the merits of giving the item Righteousness separate from the Beast Change, could work either way and wouldn't have any effect on the cost just how it worked.

DFRPG / Invoking/Compelling for Effect?
« on: February 05, 2011, 08:47:03 AM »
So, some of the people in my group and I have hit a brick wall with Invoking and Compelling Aspects for effect.  Mainly we don't know what exactly is possible to do.  I know that you basically make a declaration on the person or scene but there were very few examples of this listed in the book.  So what effects have you all gotten from aspects?

DFRPG / Alternate uses of Lawbreaker?
« on: February 02, 2011, 09:50:00 PM »
So, what would people think about alternate uses for the Lawbreaker power.  I have in mind using it to show a wizard who consistently throws too much power at a problem.  The way that it would work is that if you take backlash you could pick up the power, the more times you take backlash from channeling more problem than you can handle.  You would get the +1 bonus to your conviction roll but not to your discipline (you still can't handle the power), although you could possibly use focus items to aid in your ability to handle it all.  I am also toying around with the idea of compelling the aspect that you get with this power anytime you try to cast a controllable evocation spell, you just can't control yourself at this point.  Thoughts?

DFRPG / So what IS the agenda of the Fae Courts?????
« on: January 24, 2011, 01:32:37 AM »
So, this could just be me being incredibly obtuse but I really don't understand what the agenda of the Summer/Winter Court is.  As near I can guess Summer tries to promote life, warmth, and positiveness.  Winter tries to promote death, cold, and negativeness.  This doesn't really make much sense though.  At least according to the books, Summer doesn't really seem to care about killing people anymore than Winter does, none of them are really good nor are they evil.  The only thing that we really seem to know is that they are opposing forces and that their agendas are to of course oppose the other so as to form an equilibrium between the two of them.  This thought runs into problems though because they aren't static forces...if they were in perfect opposition there would be stasis and neither side would be able to do anything.  I know, I know the seasons change so the power of the courts is always in flux and that keeps them from being in perfect opposition.  Still...seems almost like the only agenda that they have is to oppose the other one.  What am I missing????

DFRPG / 4th Nail/Sword of the Cross ideas suggestions?
« on: January 18, 2011, 11:52:44 PM »
The GM who is running the game that I am currently in discovered a myth that there were originally 4 nails created for hanging Christ on the cross, but a young gypsy girl found out the reason for their creation and so she stole one of them to try to save him from his fate.  We are running with that premise, and my character is about to undergo a quest to have a 4th Sword of the Cross forged (the nail has already been found).  My question is, what should the name of this new sword be.  The 3 existing swords are taken from Corinthians, but also are the 3 heavenly virtues that together with the 4 Cardinal Virtues make the 7.  I am of course leaning towards having it named after one of the cardinal virtues:  Justice, Prudence, Temperance, or Fortitude.  Any thoughts or comments?

Another question that is sort of off topic (and I am the OP...jeeez this is bad!):  Has anyone done anything to bring the system more in line with the characters as written in the novels?  What I mean is ability-wise.  It is stated that Harry doesn't ever lie around Michael or any of the KotC for that matter because they just know when they are being lied to.  Also it is stated that they seem to be able to sense the supernatural, especially evil supernatural beings.  Fix, as the Summer Knight is described as standing in nearly blizzard conditions yet snow seems to actively avoid him, and he doesn't seem to feel the effects of the cold.  Has anyone taken any of these things into account with their own characters?  I can see them being so minor that they aren't even worth a stunt or an Aspect...merely a component of their high concept or mantle.

DFRPG / Angelic Scion
« on: December 11, 2010, 07:48:41 AM »
I was thinking that I think that it would be interesting to play a character that was the Scion of a Angel, has anyone done this already and if so how did you do it (powers and aspects)?

DFRPG / Can a Knight of the Cross learn this???
« on: November 21, 2010, 08:05:16 PM »
Hey, I was talking to some friends about a possible change for a character that I am playing.  I am currently the Summer Knight but I had a destiny to pick up a Sword of the Cross.  So if very certain things happen, one of them being dying in a truly selfless way he has the possibility of being brought back by the Holy Host as a Champion of God, losing his mantle.  The only drawback is the sudden loss of magic.  Not a huge deal but a little sad since I was built to be a heavy caster as well as melee combatant.  My initial thought was to replace Seelie Magic with Soulfire.  Other people thought that I could be taught just regular magic as per a focused practitioner.  So what do you guys think?  Would it be appropriate for a Knight of the Cross to be able to learn Evocation?  What about Soulfire, does the fact that it is still sponsored restrict a Sword-bearer's actions (my thought was that the Soulfire and the Sword kind of come from the same source and the Soulfire is just filling in a gap that was left from having the Mantle ripped away)?

DFRPG / Cassandra's Tears
« on: November 15, 2010, 12:37:33 AM »
Has anyone (GM or Player) played with this power?  How did it go?  What sorts of plot hooks did they facilitate for you?  I ask because I have a character that has it, but as of yet my GM isn't compelling them at all...nor is he giving me any predictions, and so far hasn't allowed me to make any predictions of my own to put in the game.  I am looking for ways that I can try to bring it up so that it won't just be a wasted aspect.

DFRPG / True Faith of alternate faiths/philosophies?
« on: October 31, 2010, 06:30:02 PM »
Hi, I have been very interested in making a character that has true faith powers but drew them from a philosophy rather than a religion.  I know that in the books Harry talks about seeing people invoking true faith of different religions such as Shintoism, but we have also seen Harry display powers of faith based on his magic with the holy symbol being his mother's necklace.  So do you all think that using a philosophy or a code of ethics would be beyond the scope of the intent of the powers?  I was thinking about having a knight (not an overly religious knight however) who has a True Faith in the code of chivalry.  Another character idea that I had was for a character who had True Faith in the Seelie Court or Unseelie Court.  My reasoning behind this is that the Court itself seems to be sentient with the 3 queens taking up the mantle of the position but the power coming from the court itself.  Thoughts?

DFRPG / What Summer Magic Evocations have you made/seen?
« on: October 23, 2010, 02:56:33 AM »
I am really enjoying the concepts of Seelie magic the more that I read them, but I am kind of at a loss of what are good evocations to use with them.  Summer could of course use a fire blast, an evocation healing effect (would this remove current stress on the person as well as starting them on the road to recovery?), possibly an evocation superboost to physical atts?  It is an aspect of Biomancy.  What about shields, I was thinking that a fun shield would be to rapidly grow a wall of plants, probably vines, to intercept the attack.  One could also employ a fire shield.  After that I am at a loss though.  So what fun things have you seen done or have you thought of doing with Summer Magic?

DFRPG / Summer Knight questions...
« on: October 12, 2010, 04:15:38 AM »
Hi, I am one of the many new posters here, but I have made a character for a new DF game and I was wondering if people had any ideas for me.

Does anyone know what the Summer Knight actually does?  What types of "assignments" he/she might get?  We know that the Winter Knight occassionally acts as a hitman/assassin, would the Summer Knight do the same?

Does anyone know how old how old Fix is?  My character is going to be the Summer Knight in our campaign and is going to be 16 yrs old...he kind of got tricked into the position not really knowing what it truly entailed.  Do you guys think that 16 is too young?  I was imagining him growing into the role and playing out stumbling with his job a couple of times.

Do we have any other info on the Fae Knights not in "Summer Knight" and very minimally in "Small Favor"?
