CD Book Club / Re: Molly's relationshipo with the Svartalves
« on: October 22, 2013, 02:37:06 AM »
I'm new to the forum but have been reading the books for the last five plus years.  I am kind of curious about this whole relationship that Molly has with the Svartalves.  It isn't explored much in Cold Days, probably for good reason.  I wonder if he plans on turning that into a short story for a future anthology.  If someone else has already brought this up, let me know because I would love to read more about it.

Yes there is a short story about it coming out in George Martin's anthology, Dangerous Women. December 3, 2013.

DF Spoilers / Re: Ivy and the Obllivion War
« on: November 19, 2012, 04:40:42 AM »
I'm pretty sure this will never make it into the actual Dresden Files, since Harry has no idea the Oblivion War is happening, along with everyone else.  So I'll share it here. :)

The Archive was constructed /for/ the Oblivion War.  Specifically.

Yes, the Archive (and Ivy, the two aren't really divisible) know about these forgotten beings.  The Archive is in essence the keeper of the dead, where they are concerned.  Once the archive believes one of them has been consigned to oblivion, she holds on to the memory of that being briefly, for another thousand years or so, watching for any mention of that being in print in an effort to make sure that she is the /last/ person alive who remembers whichever hideous entity has been consigned.

And once the safety period has elapsed, and the Archive is confident that no one else remembers, she deletes the memory from the Archive.  Bad guy, /gone/.

She also tries to keep track of the enemy players in the Oblivion War via watching for communications and so on.  When she finds a trace of them, somewhere, she lets a cell of operatives (like Lara and Thomas) know what's up, through a blind drop, and sends them off to handle the problem.

The Oblivion War is a huge, /slow/ thing.  Stuff happens every few decades, at most.  That's why the Archive was created--to be an immortal awareness, something that could track and intelligently direct responses to the enemy in a war happening on an almost geological scale.

All that other stuff she says the Archive is for?   Smoke and mirrors. :)

Kincaid, by the way, has no idea that the Oblivion War exists.  It isn't like Ivy explains this stuff.  She just gives orders. :)

DF Reference Collection / Re: [CD spoilers] Cowl = Simon reference thread

Regarding the WOJ which talks about Simon and a death curse:

Note that Jim doesn't actually state that Simon cast this death curse nor that he died. He just specifically pointed to all the vampires dying around him. Another way to look at this quote considering we know that Cowl has survived death curses before is that this particular death curse wasn't cast by Simon but at him and all the vampires that happened to be around him. He managed to defend against the curse but vampires were obliterated. This chain of logic could work if one of the wizards of Archangel recognised Simon as the traitor who let the Red's bypass the formidable wards and decided to try and take him down as a last ditched effort.

We also know that Simon had a female apprentice which fits really well as being Kumori.

I don't recall anything about Simon having a female apprentice?

Number one has been discussed before. They even went further and said Odin was Merlin's father. One reason Odin interested himself in Red Court business. It was even suggested the sacrifice could have taken him out.

It seems a lot worse this year than last year. Have you considered not letting new members open new topics until they had made 100 (or whatever) in other peoples topics?

Do all Wizards have a portion of Scion blood in them, which explains their talent?

Unknown, but I have always thought so.

The there is the option that Malcolm was Harry's father (as in raised him) but not his biological dad. Maybe Harry's mom was already pregnant and Malcolm was so in love with Maggie that he accepted the child as his (after all, he has a good heart). It would give another spin to the story and we would have to find out who the father was and what...

Rubbish

DF Reference Collection / Re: Dresden Files: Series Timeline
« on: June 08, 2012, 09:33:46 PM »
It is a known mistake.

I just made this account to ask whether it's a mistake in just my books or in all the books, because I remember when I read it recently, in book 4 (Summer Night) McCoy called the Merlin Alfred, but in every book after that it says his name is Arthur. And then I noticed in this timeline he was also referred to as Alfred, so my question is what's his name, and whether anyone else noticed this or if it's just my version of the books? (Bear in mind that they're in e-book format)

Isn't there a WoJ that the grandmother was just human nothing special?

What Jim actually said was that she was mortal.

 ;D
And dew-drop faeries.

Many many years ago after I read the Lord of the Rings, I could never stand to read about tiny elves or fairies again. I have to thank Jim Butcher for giving them back to me.

Very funny. It is already April 1 on the east coast.

That is totally stupid. I could see if they called a Scotsman an Englishman. But Britain is a term which  encompasses all of the British Isles. Anyone Scotsman who says he isn't British is a total idiot.

0.o I adore Nolan's Batman movies, and I think Bale did very well with the dual nature of the character.
Not if you ask a Scotsman, I'm telling you. Call a short-tempered Scottish person British, and the best case scenario is you get punched in the neck.
Casting shouldn't be restricted by nationality, anyway. I can name plenty of fine actors we would probably all miss if such a thing became standard practice. (Just as an example, even though I don't really like him for Harry per se, Hugh Jackman is Australian.)

"Skinny kid"?!?
