Just a place holder thread for discussion. Is this the Fight Night book?
-
Greek gods, wrestlemania, and maybe a locker-room murder mystery.
-
Mark my words: supernatural steroids.
-
Which greek god we want to see as murder victim?
-
I'm really hoping we get at least one scene of the gods wrestling blow-by-blow in all its cheesy glory. I'm hoping for a Hercules/Ares/Thor throw down.
-
Which greek god we want to see as murder victim?
Hermes? somebody shot the messenger?
-
I just want Hermes to be the ringside commentator.
As for the murder, I've always thought Poseidon was a jerk.
-
since these are 'gods' will the murder have to have taken place on Halloween?
-
Harry meets Hades, again, as an undertaker type wrestler.

THAT is a GREAT image
-
Apollo as Ric Flair or is there a better option?
-
Apollo as Ric Flair or is there a better option?
Or The Rock!
-
Which greek god is closest to b eing Stone Cold? Hephaestus?
-
Wait, what?
15: Skin Game
16: Peace Talks
17: Mirror Mirror
19 18: Fight Night
Or did I miss a new WoJ?
I was hoping 19 would be timetravel
-
Is there a collection of WOJ and other clues as to what we might see in remaining casebooks?
-
I thought it was going to be 18 is Fight Night, 19 is the Dragon one, and 20 is the return of Nicodemus.
-
I am not for sure, either. Really could use a summary of future book rumors and WOJ
-
Well, there's this: http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,21772.msg947686.html#msg947686 (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,21772.msg947686.html#msg947686)
Relevant:
Is DF all planned out or outlined?
A general outline/events have been planned since 1995. Two extra books are planned as DF is two books behind.
So probably 22+3
When are we going to see dragons again?
Dude, I can’t possibly do a dragon thing unless it’s a whole book. So that would be book….20 or 21, something like that. Probably 21. Yeah, that seems about right.
Do you expect to change your method of going forward a year in your storyline each book? Will you do any big jumps forward or maybe even backward?
Yes I'm going to keep doing that because it works a little bit better for me to keep track of what year it is in the story. Am I going to make any big leaps forward or backwards? Well there is a whole law of magic about messing with time, and given it's a law of magic, Dresden is gonna have to break it eventually.
We’ve still go the really excited things in front of us. We’ve got giants and apocalii (which I judge to be the plural of apocalypse). Kaiju and gods. Plus we’re going to have a dragon vs. wizard fight. Because…you knew that was coming.
Kaiju is like godzilla-type stuff.
Also I can't find the WoJ but there is one mentioning aircraft carriers.
-
That helps, thanks.

Aircraft Carriers? Not fulfilled in changes I assume.
-
Harry Dresden called aboard an aircraft carrier by the US Navy to solve a mystery with supernatural indicators. Harry has to not only find the killer, but deal with strict military regulations and authority.
-
I am hoping for Sue on a carrier that smashes into a kaiju and Sue scurries up its back like velocorapters on a T-Rex.

Have you seen the latest Jurassic Park movie?

Yep, and that is where I got the idea.

Welcome.

Would Sue be preformed or in bone form on the carrier? Transporting a live T-rex on a character would not be ideal, but drawing the energy to form Sue in a ship on the ocean may be beyond Harry's abilities. Regardless, I want to see the Navy's reaction to a live T-rex on a ship.
-
Think more ludicrously.
Sue eating the Lincoln Memorial.
Sue getting trapped in Wrigley Field during the World Series.
Sue chewing up Arctis Tor while the Erlking laughs.
...Sue on the International Space Station.
-
I excell at ludicrous and go straight to plaid.
-

Plaid would be... Sue terraforming Mars.
-
Sue terraforms Mars from the distant past and causes John Carter (Burroughs) events to occur.
-
The thought of Erlking laughing while watching Sue go on a rampage is amusing to consider.

I would actually be really interested in his POV on the events of Dead Beat. I'm curious whether his change of heart on Harry comes from him realizing on his own that Harry confined him to prevent the Hunt from being eaten vs "to protect mortals" - which was an incredibly dumb way for Harry to explain it - or from Mab having a word with him.
-
An Erlking short story would be pretty awesome.
-
I'd read it, but there's the problem of being too revealing. We'll never get characters who know too much about what's going on behind the scenes as perspective characters, unfortunately. Monsieur Butcher even joked that he couldn't do one for Mouse because he's clued in too much—though know we're getting the Zoo novella from his and Maggie's perspectives, so I guess there goes that point.
Anyway, I'd read the hell out of it. Honestly, one with Erlking, Kringle, and Eldest Gruff hanging out and building their three-way bromance would be awesome.
-
Christmas Kringle story done Dresden-style would be amusing.
-
I think an Erlking, Kringle, Eldest Gruff sit down in a bar and have a conversation story would be a blast.
-
It would have to be at Mac's, of course.
-
A short story about them competing over who has the best battle story would be great.
-
Does the dream I had last night that JB announced the reason for Peace Talks taking this long was that there was another story that needed to be out first and that we were going to get this new book (called First Night) and then Peace Talks and Mirror Mirror in much more rapid succession count ?
-
Your dreams seem more literal than mine. I am still trying to figure out why a yellow bird perched on a chair under a skylight scared the crap out of me.

All you have to do is record them faithfully every morning for three decades, and detailed recall improves immensely.

(from an old post of mine):
So there are a number of references to something epic that will happen during the last books, and I thought it might be worth trying to put it together.
1) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7MT_zmg3T94
Zip ahead to 47:55, for a question about if the mortal world is waking up to the existence of magic. Jim gives a long answer culminating in 49:20 with "by the end of this we're going to be talking Kaiju and Jaeger epic". The connection to the question (about mortal involvement) makes it seems like military-level intervention.
1) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NEHTk0gVaQ
At the 32:10 minute mark he says: "My big trilogy, we're going to have to get the navy involved in the end". He goes to say "you think I'm being nice. Joke's on you", implying I assume a horrible fate for some of those sailors.
3) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YyAKU7sNWYI
At the 25:28 mark, someone asks about getting ideas for a book. Jim answers at length with an anecdote at 27:05 about how Dead Beat/PG got switched up because of the coolness of "Zombie T-rex". Then at the 27:35 mark he says "That's one of the fun things about writing a scene that you've been waiting a long long to write. There's one with an aircraft carrier that I don't get to write for another 7-8 years, and I've been lusting after it for the past 10. "
4) There's another one from the Beavercreek sigining if you care. The audio is broken up so you only hear the last part of the answer (and then a reference to the question). It's right at the beginning of the video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTh8rAl5i_g
I think there's another video or two, but I don't see it in my notes. In any case, what you can put together from these references is that apparently mortal awareness of the supernatural increases until the USN decides to send a naval taskforce (since I don't see a single aircraft carrier operating alone) to deal with some Kaiju issue. Since this is a Harry-viewpoint story, I assume he will be on said carrier.
Given the Lovecraftian nature of the Outsiders (and the "FTHAGN" quote in from Skin Game), my guess for the opponent in this story would be something on the order of this guy:
http://static.comicvine.com/uploads/original/11122/111223357/4534280-2651625309-cthul.jpg
All in all, it has the potential to be a truely epic Crowning Moment of Awesome.
5) So what could be the Jaeger part? Well, we've seen Bob animate both a zombie trex and a stone lion. In the first case, Harry used necromancy to empower the zombie, but in the second, it seems Bob did it all on his own. Presumably there is some sort of size restriction, perhaps limited by the amount of power you can bring to bear. Personally, I was hoping that Butters would use the power source of his lightsaber to build gadgets (turning him from Batman into Green Lantern), but perhaps Harry could empower a huge golem that Bob (or Bonnie, or even evil-bob) could inhabit.
6) Remember that WoJ about putting things into the first book that will eventually be used, well what about using lightning to cast a spell? We've never really gone back to that one (except I believe for Elaine being able to charge her equivalent of Harry's shield bracelet by plugging it in -- need to find reference for that). In any case, one thing that an aircraft carrier typically has is a stable nuclear engine -- you know, one of those things that has enough power to let it go around the word a zillion times without refueling. So---- Harry uses (up?) the fuel in the nuclear engine to empower a body that Bob inhabits and it goes off to fight Cthulhu.
7) ...maybe a bit a soul fire to for "powers of creation" in there, etc.
8) Finally, consider how the power of mass faith is so big that even the fake shroud has big mojo. Then consider the Statue of Liberty. It's probably got enough power stored in it to do something cool. It might be a bit ghostbusters-2, but if Bob (or Bonnie) animated the Statue of Liberty, that could very well fulfill the "Jaeger" part.
TL;DR -- Bob is going to animate the Statue of Liberty and punch Cthulhu on the nose.
-

Grudgingly going to sleep is quite normal. Grudgingly out of bed as well.

Oh, I like that.

Might be interesting to know what some of the tallest existing statues are and where they are located for future possibilities.

Cristo Redentor springs to mind.

It is not even the highest one, there are five higher statues of Jesus and some of them on strange places like Vietnam.

Wouldn't that cause spiritual chaos if a 200 ft stone Jesus started walking!

That would make Sanya's day.

We have a 15cm high statue in Stockholm. He would be ferocious.

I hope it's Bob vs. Evil Bob, and they pull a South Park and have Evil Bob possess the Lincoln Memorial, only for Bob to possess a statue of John Wilkes Booth to take him down.
Really, though, if something like statue possession happens, I'm hoping Bob pulls the remains of the Colossus from the sea for that purpose. It was the size of the Statue of Liberty, but has got a lot of ancient mojo around it.
-
Maybe they will be in Egypt and Bob has to animate the Sphinx.
-

I hope not. The Sphinx's head is comically tiny for its body. I don't know what those artists were thinking. It's like they've never seen a mythological creature before!

So, does the Secret Service need to keep more eyes on Mel Gibson? :P
-
Well, when you consider that Jim has now been to Australia, Sweden, and England, we may see Harry traveling around.
-

People don't recognise Waiting for the Galactic Bus quotes these days? O tempora o mores.
-
That is expected. As Mab's hitman, he needs to cover more ground than Chicago and the US.
-
A bigger worldview would be nice, but I get the feeling that Harry will still be localized to the Chicago area for the main stories. Maybe Mab can cook something up that will allow him to travel by air.

Pretty unnecessary for him; he's still got Margaret's knowledge of the Ways.
And by the way, I just realized that Mother Summer tells Harry that the price for seeing the Outer Gates was that he may never know another peaceful night's sleep, the same price Lea put on Margaret's gem. Hmm.
-
Good catch about the night's sleep. Hadn't thought of that.
-

He does not. Mab probably has it.
And by the way, I just realized that Mother Summer tells Harry that the price for seeing the Outer Gates was that he may never know another peaceful night's sleep, the same price Lea put on Margaret's gem. Hmm.
IIRC the price was different for everybody and Lea did not predict only give an example.
-
He does not. Mab probably has it.
Yes he does. It was returned to him in Cold Days; Harry remarks that it's the one piece of magical equipment he has left.
Chapter Two, page 17 on Nook:
The other one held my mother's amulet.
It was a simple silver pentacle, a battered five-pointed star bound within a circle, on a simple silver chain. The pentacle's center was filled with a small red stone, cut to size. I'd once fastened the gem into place with hot glue. Apparently Mab had sent it to a genuine jeweler to attach it with something more solid. I touched the stone gingerly, and could instantly sense the energy within it, the psychic journal of my late mother's travels.
IIRC the price was different for everybody and Lea did not predict only give an example.
Yes, the price was different for everybody, and Lea was giving an example, but it's interesting nonetheless that both used the same example.

Sorry Neurovore, my pop culture aptitude is lacking. I blame social media.

I blame living in Europe, almost never watching television anyway and only listening to classical music. I read a lot of books though.
-
Does Guns and Roses count as classical music? :P I know it is considered classic rock, to my chagrin. :'(
-

Wait and see if people are still listening to it in a hundred years or so. :)
-
If not, it will be a sad world. Maybe my future great grandchild can tell my ashes. ;D
-
I wonder if we will be explicitly told what Harry's price is or if we will have to infer it from what does/doesn't happen in the stories.
-
The price is that he never gets laid again.
-

And only gets offers from beings who want to eat him.
-
But not in the fun way.
-
And only gets offers from beings who want to eat him.
That's pretty true to form already. 'Cept Murphy now. Maybe it was just a few years of enforced celibacy.
Continuing the topic of prices paid, what specific instances have been presented as "having a price" that Harry hasn't actually paid on page yet? I'm sure there are others besides the gem and seeing the Outer Gates. But my aging brain can't remember any others offhand.
Side note: don't Google "storm front" from a work computer. Apparently it is the name of a neo-Nazi organization, and it may raise some questions if your traffic is monitored. Maybe Roc Books should sue, depending on which came first.
