DFRPG / Re: Dresden Files RPG in New Orleans
« on: October 26, 2010, 06:35:21 PM »
N'awlins is almost too obvious a choice for a DFRPG game to be set in. Sooo much that can be done there. I don't live there but I've been there plenty of times in the last 8 years, including after Katrina, simply because I have so much family in the general area (Bay St. Louis and Lake Charles). Voudoun should relaly be the primary source of magic in the area, as such you could have a constant power struggle between the Vampire Courts and the Local Vouduon Priest's for control of the City.
With all that goes on there I'd think that most of the French Quarter could be considetred Neutral Ground for everyone's sake, but that could get boring if people keep running in there to lose bad guys. geez the flavor of the quarter alone can change from one building to the next; high end hotels mixed with decaying old houses, fake voudou shops, bars, strip clubs, and tons of legends and lore plus tons of live music that might attract a Fae or two.
The only thing you'd really be misisng supernaturally-speaking would be were-wolves, but where there are swamps, there are were-gators...8)

Hrmm...too young to me and a little to humorous...and pretty. Michael always strikes me as very normal-seeming and down-to-earth, but not pretty.

Mmm casting discusssions...
I could totally see Christian Kane as Kincaid. He's got the right combination of size and menancing potential.
My rough thoughts (for now);
Harry - Torn beteen Hugh Jackman and Nathan Fillion. They both are excellent actors, bot Hugh doesn't seem have the right snark factor and Nathan doesn't ahve the hair...sorry to say it but I've always seen Harry as having longish and curly hair which Hugh can easily pull off.
Murphy - Michelle Pfeiffer  ? Right size, can be scary looking when she wants to...8)
Thomas - hmmm any number of pretty boys could fill that role, Brad Pitt is an excellent actor but he's Brad Pitt and it's hard to hide that for anything. Johnny Depp could do it; he has the ability to hide himself in his roles.
Butters - Sharlto Copely (District 9 & the A-Team) he cna do humor and he can do serious...
Michael - Jeff Bridges ?
Charity - Jodi Foster ?
Molly - Allison Hanigan ? she'd be so adorable in that punky hair...8)
Rashid/Gatekeeper - Morgan Freeman ?
Merlin - John Malkovich ?
Leahansidhe - Helen Mirren !
Ramirez - John Leguizamo!
Ebenezer - ? I so have an image in my head of someone appropriate but I cant think of where I've seen him. Have to ocme back to this one tooo

DFRPG / Re: Non-magic Telekinetics?
« on: October 16, 2010, 09:58:31 PM »
For clarification; there were actually 2 questions here.
1 - Do non-magic-based Telekinesis or similar Psychic abilities exist in the world of the Dresden files? Could they?
> This one was more of a curiosity question that doesn't actually need answering, just an interesting thought.

2 - How would one go about making a Telekinetic with very fine control of his powers in the context of the RPG?
> You've all given me some pretty good ideas on how I can make this happen, thanks for all of the input!

DFRPG / Non-magic Telekinetics?
« on: October 15, 2010, 03:51:03 PM »
I've been chatting with a friend of mine about pssible characeters for a potential upcoming game and I came up with a character idea I've kind of always wanted to play;

A Telekinetic with a vast array of knowledge regarding Physics and Nuclear Sciences and has VERY fine control of Telekinesis. Fine to the point he can operate it at Microscopic Levels. In other words he could re-arrange molceules into any form he can think of. The potential could be as simple as rearranging the shape of a doorknob so it unlocks to altering the charges of protons to call lightning from the sky or even changing the flow of chemicals in a human brain to alter someone's perceptions and/or mood.

Now all of this could techniclaly be explained via the rules as several variations of magic (Mostly evocation and thaumaturgy (at least as far as I understand the system.) but what if that character was a True Psychic? In otherwords what if his powers had similar effects to magic, but did not actually draw upon magic itself, but raw willpower? While technically magic IS the use of raw willpower to bend the world to your needs, what if it could be done a bit differently? How would those in the know react to someone who could use a magic-like ability hat couldn't technically be countered by magic because it's not actually magic? Specifically how would the White Council react? Or any other Spell-slinger?

I don't know if such a thing actually exists with the Supernatural World of Dresden Files but the potnetial is there. If I actually played this character then for the purposes of the game I'd run him as someone who did not beleive in Magic, but int the power of the mind. He beleives it so strongly that his perception of what he does has been altered to the point where he isn't actually doing magic. I will have to work on this with my GM of ocurse, but I think the idea has some interesting potential.

Author Craft / Re: Angel / Fallen naming help

Some interesting stuff on there, though I noticed all of the female names were simply variations on "Angel" at least according to that.
Otherwise its pretty much the same names I've already be finding. What I'm really looking for is a list of what the Demons did before the war; what was Abaddon's Role before he fell? Who was Asmodeous before he fell? Did they have different names?
May be searching for something that does not exist.

Author Craft / Angel / Fallen naming help
« on: October 13, 2010, 11:26:00 PM »
Hey to all I need some help trying to locate some information. Specifically I am trying to find the names and roles of the Fallen Angels from BEFORE the war in Heaven. IE who were they and what did they do? I can only find the current names and roles for either Angels or the Fallen.
Yes this is for a character for the DFRPG and/or possibly a story. I have a character who is Fallen but has no idea who they are or were. wanted it to be some kind of angel of Healing or Mercy who abhorred the War and refused to fight on either condemning both and getting cast out for it. I found the names of Rhamiel (Angel of mercy and love) and Raphael (Angel of healing) but I'd prefer to find another name, if possible.

DFRPG / Re: Character Concepts
« on: October 13, 2010, 05:47:33 PM »
So I've finally had a chance to read through the Rules, at least the characetr genertion stuff, and I've refined and slimmed my list of concepts quite a bit:

Verbal Khaine
High Concept: Supernatural Super Soldier turned Mercenary
Trouble: Catch me if you can.
Template: Pure Mortal/ Focused Practicioner
Rough Background: Mercenary, escapee from a Supernatural super-soldier program; rebuilt using magic; possibly Some version of the Foreign Legion?

Alita
High Concept: Lost and Fallen Angel
Trouble: Me, Myself and I.
Template: Emissary of Power
Rough Background: She has memories except for occasional flashes of the War. Cast out because she refused to fight and healed angels on both sides. Her essence was split across multiple realms of existence and each of the fragments recall only pieces of the whole story. She currently works as a Nurse Assistant in a Church-run Hospital, this part of her is subconsciously looking for an artifact called the “Halo of the Fallen”. She made it from the feathers of her fallen brethren and presented it to the Throne before she was banished.

Ahmet Lanier
High Concept: Reluctant Necromancer
Trouble: Family Obligations.
Template: Black Court Vampire?/ Sorcerer/Necromancer
Rough Background: Turkish/French Vampire (Black Court?)/ Necromancer. He is descended from Old Blood. He dislikes his family and prefers to spend his time uncovering old artifacts and hiding them away from those who would misuse them.

Ben
High Concept: Were-Rat Sorcerer-Assassin
Trouble: Oooh Shiny!
Template: Lycanthrope or Were-form/ Sorceror (Focused on Stealth and Assasination)
Rough Background: Albino Were-rat Sorceror/Assassin. Born into a community of were-rats, he is one of the very few who could use sorcery.

Arthur Solomon Marshall
High Concept: Government-Sanctioned Monster Hunter
Trouble: Drunk and Angry.
Template: Pure Mortal
Rough Background: AKA: “Arsenal” He is an Operative for a 3-Letter Agency. He comes from an old money family whom he hates. His fiancée was killed when a group of zombies/terrorists and their master assaulted a resort they were staying at. He has been hunting for the Master since, at least when he’s not curled up in a bottle. No magic ability, just very skilled.

Elias O’Bannon
High Concept: Talented Musician and Fixer/ Knowledge Broker
Trouble: Busted and Watched.
Template: Pure Mortal
Rough Background: Musician, Fixer; lots of contacts, police record

Mitchell “Beeker” Beakley
High Concept: Junkyard Paladin
Trouble: The Lord is my Shield and my Strength.
Template: True Believer/ Focused Practitioner
Rough Background: A Steampunk/Junkyard Sorcerer/Paladin; he channels his magic through an assortment of gadgets he makes from Junkyard parts.

J.P. Devereaux
High Concept: Swamprat Bounty Hunter
Trouble: Undead and Hating it.
Template: Minor Talent
Rough Background: Crusty southern swamprat bounty hunter and some form of Undead (intelligent zombie perhaps?). Refuses to recognize he is anything other than human though he will acknowledge the existence of the supernatural. Possibly some kind of magic sink or null?

Adrian Koch
High Concept: Wealthy and Fashionable Swordsman/ Knight
Trouble: Why do anything if you can’t look good doing it?
Template: Pure Mortal/ True Believer
Rough Background: Old Blood and very wealthy German Nobility, very fashion-conscious and always on the cutting edge of fashion, uses a very Zweihander when angered, but no one know where he hides it. Wields it with surprising dexterity for its
size; possibly an artifact?

Looks like a friend of mine here in ATX is looking to start up a group for a weekday game that wills start after 6pm (Wednesdays or Thursdays preferred). We need players and a location large enough to play in that is in the north ATX area (both of us live and work in the area.).

Ah okay I see. Asymmetry suits me...8)
Good things is that even my lowest tier characters generally have some basic background, at least in my head, on who they are and where they want to go.

I need to ge me one of them cork-boards that some authors use to organize their web of relationships and plots. A computer is all well and good but I really get tired of sitting in front of the screen as that's all I do at work all day...8P

Not sure I'm following on the symetriclaly developed?
I've got the four main characetrs mostly written up but I will probably have to tweak them as I write up inter-related characters. I also added a few more details such as Physical Description, Psychology and Short History (prior to the start of the story). So the Template I am working form looks like this;
•   The character's name
•   A one-sentence summary of the character's storyline
•   Character Description/Appearance
•   Personality and Psychology
•   The character's motivation (what does he/she want abstractly?)
•   The character's goal (what does he/she want concretely?)
•   The character's conflict (what prevents him/her from reaching this goal?)
•   The character's epiphany (what will he/she learn, how will he/she change?
•   Short History (prior to the start of the story)
•   A one-paragraph summary of the character's storyline

I play/played a Samurai Role-Playing Game called "Legend of the Five Rings" which has a beutiful system but more importantly a Character development tool which is a Modified version of "Twenty Questions" which helps flesh out a characetrs history even more (There is also an extended version with another 20 or so questions) . As aprt of playing this game and the Serenity RPG I discovered something called a 3x3x3 which is a quick list of three friends, 3 acquantinces and 2 enemies/rivals. As a GM I asked for them from players prior to game start to help in fleshing out the game world. As a player I used it to help me get a better grap of the characters personality.
I may try using both of those tools on at least the 4 main characetrs to flesh them out some more and maybe a stripped-down version for lesser characters. It would be a lot more work but I beleive it will add a lot of depth as well.
Hrm...now that i think about it I may try to come up with a 20 Quetsions for the Story and World itself as well...

Workign through the Method on my most active story now. Gotten up to the point of writing up character stuff...and WOW will that take me a lot of time...ugh. I have between 4 and 7 main characters, though I may move 3 to quasi second-tier just to simplfy the development.
On the other hand so far I have cleaned things up quite a bit with my existing notes; so far, so good.
