DFRPG / Question on the Killing Law
« on: March 17, 2014, 07:42:06 AM »
The game states that Refresh pretty much represents the soul.  If a human allowed themselves to get to 0 Refresh, like a serial killer or brainwashed super soldier or something like that.  Would that be considered a soulless creature for the purposes of the Law about using magic to kill?

For that matter, what about White Court Vamps?  They have souls...are they covered by the First Law?

Author Craft / The Dresden in your writing....
« on: December 04, 2011, 05:03:22 AM »
As I was coming to the end of writing Divine Blood's first book, and discussing the actions of Mao Semezou, the mother of three of the main characters, with one of my pre-readers, it hit me.

Mao seems to be rather firmly influenced by the Dresden Files...I've especially seen bits of three particular characters: Dresden(snark), Murphy(attitude) and Charity(mama-bear)

though can't really show the Mama-Bearness without major spoilers

the fact that she's a "sensitive" mercenary is pretty much revealed first chapter to show a fragment of her character

I find she has a decent amount of Dresden's snark, Murphy's attitude and Charity's Mama-bear

any of you have similar instances and examples you can show?

*******************************************
“I’ve got the background check on Mao Semezou,” Eowyn said.  “They were a bit resistant about giving it to me, but given the cover and I was there in front of the civilian administration, they had to hand it over.”
“The Captain sent us one too,” Whelan said.  “And if the file at Bravura is anything like this one, they should be keeping a better eye on her.”
“Really.  What they show me is a commercial feng shui shih.”
“What’s that?” the other soldier asked.
“Moving stuff around to make ‘energies’ flow better.  Basically a glorified interior decorator.  They make quite a bit of money if they’re good.”  Eowyn picked up the first few pages of the printed file while setting down the file she’d gotten from the school.  “What do we have here?”
   “Freelance sensitive,” Whelan said.
“Are we sure this is the same person?” Eowyn asked, noting that this Mao Semezou had been an independent contractor on at least three Avalon missions in Europe according to what the Captain had sent them.
“There’s a message for you with the file,” Whelan said.  “You have one solid password by the way.”
“Sergeant that had better be a joke,” the Indian-American woman warned darkly.  “Move aside.”
“Of course, Sergeant Major.  I’d never try to crack your or the Captain’s files.”  The Irishman smiled as he pushed his chair out of Eowyn’s way so that she could open the file coded to her access level.  “Now, Intelligence’s on the other hand.”
“Instructions are to confirm whether or not this is the Mao from the file she gave us and figure out what she’s doing here if it is her.  Keeping it to ourselves for now.”
“Well that should be easy,” Connor said.  “Let me get cleaned up and we’ll stake out her PO Box.”
“Are you planning what I think you’re planning?” Eowyn asked, crossing her arms.
“She’s a single mother in her thirties.  Like putty in my hands.”
“Uh huh.”  Eowyn sighed and shook her head as she considered the option.  “In all honesty, having someone come up out of nowhere to hit on her is probably the least suspicious way we can approach her.  If we choose to approach her at all.  She’s a sensitive according to this, and there isn’t much more than that.”
“I am very capable of keeping all my thoughts on the business of attending to her whim and pleasure, thank you,” Connor said.
   “I just bet you are.”
“Sergeant Major Desai, I’m well aware that you subscribe to the philosophy that the best language school is between the sheets.  So you can hardly be lecturing me on chastity.”
Eowyn stood up and frowned at him.
“Okay, too familiar, got it.”  He waited until she backed off, leaning against the computer desk again, before continuing to put forth his case.  “Still, the only address we have is that PO Box from the school.  And if this is her, trying to get to her place without being seen is going to rise all sorts of hackles.”
“And we’re supposed to keep Intelligence out of it for now,” Eowyn said.  “No sense raising their hackles if it’s just some lady with a similar name.”
   “And psychic kids.”
“All right,” Eowyn said.  “We’ll do it your way.”

   “Lesbian.  Go away.”
Connor stared in uncomprehending shock as the small red-head woman who’d seemed so feminine and had three children simply cut him off mid-introduction and walked on past with an irritated expression on her face.  The sound of laughter echoed through his ear-bud as his team leader gave in to the urge to chortle at his predicament.
   “Smooth, really smooth, Sergeant.”
“Laugh all you want,” he responded.  “Who does this leave to get her to open up and talk now?”
Eowyn’s laughter cut short with a choking gasp.

The redhead had been sitting for ten minutes before the young Indian woman started making nervous looks her way.  She was attractive, and Mao couldn’t help but noticed the flustered way that she was working herself up to approach.  It wasn’t terribly obvious, the girl was better than average at controlling her emotions.  She was probably, in fact, better than Mao herself was.  It was obvious that she was athletic to a degree, and Mao thought she detected a hint of awareness that spoke of someone who had served at some point.  Indian resistance, perhaps, driven out by Burma to safe ground.
Finally, the woman picked up her tray and walked over to Mao’s table.
“Hey, do you mind if I sit here?”
Mao adjusted her guess about the woman from Indian irregular to United States military.  The Indian continent was several generations removed from her voice, but California was well and truly making itself known.
The exorcist’s normal answer would have been rather terse and perhaps rude, but she was in a rather sentimental state of mind.  And, just like she was sure that she should come to this restaurant, she felt sure she had to talk to this woman.
“Fine with me,” Mao said.  “Go ahead and sit down.”
“Thanks,” the woman said, sliding into the seat and scanning about.
Mao recognized the uncomfortable defaulting to tactical considerations.  She did it, Eija did it, Deimosu did it, and Naiki had turned it into a game so that she could turn her own developing paranoia inside out.  The woman’s eyes showed that she wasn’t successfully setting aside her discomfort with the situation as she talked again and made an attempt to visibly appreciate Mao’s body.
   “I was wondering…”
“You’re straight,” Mao said firmly before turning back to her food and sampling some of the french fries there.
“Excuse me?” the Indian woman snapped, so flabbergasted she wasn’t sure exactly how to respond to that statement.  “How did…I mean…what are you talking about?”
“You’re trying to put out signs that you’re interested, but they’re very obvious.  Trust me, I tried the other way on this a little bit when I was younger.”
Mao glanced around the small fast food place, seeing if anybody else was watching.
“Did you lose a bet or something?  Someone in your unit put you up to this?”
“My uni…yeah…that’s pretty much the case.”
“So, being straight,” Mao noted, sipping from her soda.  “What were you planning on doing if I agreed to go out with you?”
“I don’t think we planned it out that far,” the other woman said, chagrinned.  “Would you have said yes?”
“Probably not,” Mao said.  “I don’t do flings and I’m not looking for anybody right now.”
The other woman took a bite out of her burger, chewed and swallowed it before continuing the conversation.  Definitely not one of the sacred cow set, Mao noted with a smile.
   “Busy life?”
“That’s a way to put it.  Just setting down roots and already getting jobs left and right.”
“Wow, you’re that good a feng shui shih?” the younger woman asked.
Immediately, Mao’s demeanor changed, her eyes narrowing and the relaxation she’d started feeling drifting away from her face in a clearly visible manner.  “Say that again?”
“You’re a feng shui shih, aren’t you?” the Indian-American woman asked.
Mao gestured to herself and her belongings, which showed no outward sign as to what her occupation was to anybody else.  Her right eyebrow arched up into her bangs and she crossed her arms with a casually suspicious expression on her face.
“Okay, I slipped a bit there.”
“Just a little bit,” Mao confirmed.  “Are you with soldier-boy from the school?”
   “Damir, yeah,” the woman said.
“I should have known this was coming,” Mao sighed.
“Do you speak Mandarin?  Your file is vague.”
   “No, unfortunately.  French?”
“Thank goodness, no.  I’ll bet you speak Japanese though.”
“As do a lot of the people around here.  How’s your Italian?”
“Oh that’s good, actually.”  Eowyn smiled a little bit as she switched over to that language.
“Really?” Mao said.  “That’s an odd choice for someone that operates in the South Pacific.”  She thought for a moment, considering that little piece of information.  “I’ve heard rumors that Avalon has a real top notch commander in this part of the world who is Italian.  I guess that explains why you know a little bit about me.  I’ve worked with you people a couple of times.”
“We’d like to know what you’re doing here,” Eowyn said without confirming her source of employ, though the smug look on Mao’s face said that the other woman had already read a confirmation in her body language.  The mercenary reminded herself that the woman was a sensitive of unknown type, sensing emotions and outright reading thoughts was not impossible.
Mao herself considered briefly how to answer that question.  Usually, she’d be quite a bit cryptic and vague, but speaking to Sergeant Major Eowyn Desai was somehow relaxing, even after it had been revealed the woman was an agent of some sort.  Besides, she respected Avalon’s work, and she was almost positive that’s who she was dealing with given the way Eowyn’s chi was shifting about her.
“I just moved here,” she said finally.  “I used to live back this way before….things happened.  Felt it was finally time to come home.”
“And your kids?” Eowyn asked, making note of that admission.
“Are my kids, pure and simple.”
“That’s not a cover?” Eowyn asked, surprised.
Mao cocked her head to the side and gave the Marine a sidelong look.  “Just because I play for the same team doesn’t mean that plumbing stops working.”
Eowyn smirked at the crass wording, delivered with a blunt, almost bored, tone of voice and sipped from her drink.  She could really like this woman.  That relaxation faded away somewhat then, however as she took in the discomfort behind the jaded exterior.
“Do you mind if we keep an eye on you and your kids?” she asked.  “I mean we’ve already had at least one near thing between one of our team and your son.”
“Like I said, I should have expected it.  Still, I had hoped I’d found a place away from the weirdness around my old neighborhood.  And almost first thing I have a purple-haired girl giving me headaches.”
“Yeah, she’s an expressive thing, isn’t she?  And I wonder why she bothers to dye the roots purple and nothing else.”
Mao’s brow furrowed and she turned to face Eowyn more straight on, a look of curiosity on her face.
   “What is it?”
“Did they tell you why you’re guarding her?”
“It’s nothing.  We’re being kept off the grid a bit because someone else screwed up a mission we were on.  We get to supplement security here for a bit.  Why?”
“First thing, the black hair is dyed, not the purple.  Families with a long history of psychic ability get funky hair and eye colors eventually.”  She indicated her own purple eyes and vibrant red hair.  “Second….”
“Second, we’re babysitting an akira,” Eowyn said shaking her head.  “Thanks for the heads up.”
“One of my daughters is in her class,” Mao said.  “If I or she notice anything weird, we’ll send you a word.  Don’t worry about charging it.”
“That’ll be appreciated.  We’re getting little enough of that from our own people here.”
“It’s the way this world works, nobody wants to share information if they don’t think they have to.”
“Which makes me wonder about you here.”
“I know, this is strange,” Mao noted, sipping her own soda.  “But I….I hate to say it.  I have a hunch I should trust you.”
   “Isn’t having hunches your thing?”
“No, observing and considering is my thing,” she responded.  “Hunches have no rationale behind them.  It’s annoying.  I’ve never liked things I didn’t have an explanation for.”
“And yet you’re here, trusting a hunch and talking to me.”  Eowyn was more than a little amused by the skeptical attitude coming out of the reported psychic’s mouth.  “Come to think about it, I’m sort of doing the same thing.”
   “Aggravating, isn’t it?”
“Hey, as an old veteran, you’ve got to understand the value of a good instinct.”
“Instinct is fallible and what’s that about ’old veteran’?” Mao asked leaning forward in an attempt to be grim, though the twitching of her mouth revealed bits of the humor behind it.
“You really don’t look like the sort of woman that would care much about that,” the mercenary noted to the psychic.  “Hell you even look like you’re still younger than me.  And I know you have to be at least ten years older.”
“Depends on how old I was when I had my kids, doesn’t it?  And there’s a principle involved here.  You should know enough about that yourself.  I get enough commentary like that from my kids without them meaning to.”
“Feh, kids and subordinates.  You’d think they’d listen to us after a while.”
“And not just hear the letter, really.”  Mao nodded sagely and took a bite from her chicken sandwich.
“It’s like we’re the adults in that old cartoon show, the one with the bald kid…”
   “Peanuts.  Wah, wah, wah, wah.”
“Ah, see, told you that you were old.”
Mao rolled her eyes and then titled her head toward the other woman with an expression that tried to be unamused and failed.  Idly, almost hesitantly, she checked her watch and then looked back across toward Eowyn.
“So we’re both a ways out from our current neighborhood,” she said.  “I should be heading back.  School is ending fairly soon.”
“Right,” Eowyn said.  “Want to share a cab heading back?”
“I can stand to continue this conversation for a bit longer.”  Mao noted as she finished off her fries.
“You’re not flirting with me are you?”
“I don’t flirt with straight women.  Teasing, on the other hand.”  The red-heads expression turned serious then as she looked away briefly.  “By the way.  Thank you.  For not asking the question.”
“Well, I’ve got enough I think.”  And she smiled in a smug manner.  “I have a hunch I can trust you.  I’ll get us a cab then.”
“Good, then we can get back to boring the person on the other end of the radio I’m sure you have on you somewhere.”  She said that casually as she gathered up the trash and Eowyn walked away with something of a twitch.

DFRPG / Divine Blood Style Magic - Help in Reproducing
« on: June 17, 2011, 02:41:34 PM »
I'm rebooting my Divine Blood fanfic to clean away the licensed stuff and leave just my original content behind (relatively easy since more than half the fan fic is original characters anyway).  I'm doing this as both a campaign guide and a novel series (roughly 50% complete on both)

the actual campaign guide is going to be without rules since I create the settings and let everybody decide on their own preferred system to use, but I'd like to be able to have a free rules packet to offer as a free teaser

I'm going to start relatively small here and see about using FATE/Dresden stuff to reproduce magic as it exists in Divine Blood

Magic in DB is powered by beings known as "elements" which are subspecies of the three (known) races to evolve into sentient and world-wide civilization in Earth's history, two of the races are extinct save some surviving elements who have become immortal through a particular process (or were born that way if they were conceived after a parent became Immortal)

elements themselves form units in a psychic network with others on the same wavelength, after a time some started defecting so that conversion paradigms were invented to allow the defector to join the network they'd immigrated into

for most of human history, there were two networks: Orochi and Ashvattha (Nidhog and Yggdrasil in the fanfic)...powered by, respectively, Demons and Gods...a third network exists but isn't well used in the beginning of the story, but develops to become the Silmaril network later on, powered by former humans now calling themselves Ainur

any member of these networks can use their own abilities at will and can draw on extra raw power through the network access to other Immortals and to the massive organic/living computers that provide extra processing and energy (the names of the computers create the names of the Networks...) however, they can also use the powers of other entities in the network

Example:

Nimu Ichi is an Ainur with telekinesis.....she can use telekinesis at will because its her power
Deimosu is an Ainur with electrokinesis and generation...he can thus use that at will, toss around lightning and such

however, if Deimosu wants to move a set of keys from a distance to his hand, he will have to borrow Nimu Ichi's telekinesis to do that

borrowing powers is done through a spell

************************

Each race handles spells differently, but each is aware that just allowing anybody to use any power is a bad idea

Demons operate on a favor system, casting black magic spells leads you to owing magically enforceable "favors" to the Demon powering the spell.  Depending on the nature of the Demon and their relationship to you this can be a minor to severe concern.  A civilian Demon (though said Demons are unlikely to have spells most magicians would find useful) is unlikely to ask for anything terrible.  Most of the more modern Demonic leadership are also human-friendly and tend to prefer lessening hostilities with the Gods.  However, older Demons who miss the "good old days" when it was simply Demons trying to take back "their" planet from the usurpers (Gods) and vermin (everything else) are likely to make people who owe them favors do very, very bad things.

Gods operate on a request form, making their spellcasting slow and also facing the possibility that the God responsible for that spell could decide to deny a caster access to that spell.  A white magician can conceivably access any white spell, just as anybody can cast any black spell, but progressively powerful spells will be more likely to be denied or require longer requests.

Ainur operate on a sort of Passcode situation based on numerology.  Every Ainur's name can be reduced to a single digit number and that number can then be expanded into larger numbers before being reduced again to a single digit representing another Ainur.  The path, even between two Ainur that have "2" as their number" is unique per individual and thus serves as an identifying code.  Each individual has pre-granted permissions to different levels of spells.  Thus, they can cast about as quickly as a Demon, without owing favors, but have a more limited pool of spells to draw from based on past proven trustworthiness and responsibility.

Any element is immediately capable of casting any spell within their network (provided they have appropriate privileges in the Ainur case) and Gods, Demons and Ainur are not considered magicians.

Magicians are highly trained and dedicated mortals(not necessarily human) who have managed to generate enough psychic potential to tap into one or more of the Networks and borrow the power of a God, Demon  or Ainur (mostly Gods and Demons, not any established traditions teaching how to connect to Silmaril without being an Ainur)

Also, near the end of the story, all three networks are linked through individuals with permanent psychic links...meaning that all three networks are possibly becoming one extended network.

**********************

Realms, Domains and Affinities are essentially specialties that have been genetically coded into individual Demons, Gods and Ainur (respectively)

in the story, the Ainur are in the process of developing these, actually

these operate essentially the same and give the individual complete control over their stated specialty

for example, Eija, Goddess of Blood can make blood flow as normal through a body even if flesh and vessels are destroyed....she can also purify blood of unhealthy content, poison it, corrupt it (such as by causing a fast version of leukemia) and if someone is already bleeding, she can pull it out of the body faster...she is also able to follow some conceptual influences, such as seeing blood on the hands (though that is part of her nature as a ghost-whisperer/death-seer already) or tracing family trees and the like...if she wanted, she could bless a blood-brother type oath to actual make the involved genetically related

however, she has no telekinetic ability outside of control of blood and her only psychic ability beyond that is her ability to see, talk to and control ghosts as well as to since a person's lifespan and see how they've been involved with death in their life time

having each God, Demon and Ainur with a different specialty reduces the number of overlapping spells in existence and also allows the individual more ability to manipulate the world and defend themselves

*****************************

Finally, the life force of each species is somewhat different.

Demonic "Vitae" is the most powerful and least efficient, they will tend to either use way too much power (creating blatantly spectacular displays of wasted energy) or way too little (causing very subtly, minor changes and shifts) because it is hard for them to cut off at just the right levels.  Some Demons specialize in the "way too little" end, others goal full bore for the "way too much".  Demons essentially have a broken faucet.

God "Mana" is the most stable and least flexible.  They are hard to dispel, but it is very hard for them repurpose mana and change over from one intent to another.  Gods make the most use of preset spells and abilities to get around this and they do very little on the fly.

Ainur/human "Chi" is the most adaptable and least powerful.  Disrupted effects can be easily redirected into another effect.  Contrary to Demons, where power is hard to shut off, Ainur and humans have trouble getting it started.  As compared to the broken faucet, they have a kink in the hose.  However, Chi is the most efficient and the most suited for enhancing other abilities.  Such as martial arts and driving and the like.

************************************

Finally, magic like stuff that isn't magic:

manipulation of raw life force (Vitae/Mana/Chi) can be done by anyone of sufficient training without using spells, however, this is limited to:

blasts, shields and enhancing existing capabilities

anything like illusions, fine-control, actual fire or lightning, poison and the like requires an appropriate Realm/Domain/Affinity or else a spell

seals and gates: the act of creating a pocket dimension to lock something away (descendants of the arts that created Yomi, Nirvana and Shangri-La), again, proper training allows for creating seals and gates without spells (however, Gods, Demons and Ainur have teleportation abilities anyway, so using a gate is unlikely for them)

circles: are power focusing tools, Demons invented the basics, humans/Ainur have the most mastery

my shinto-ist ectomancer turned full wizard: Jocaste

"I magnetize the fae."  - Weapon 8 attack powered by all the friggin' ferrous metal I could pull into the combined mass (this probably put Jocaste on some fae list that she really didn't want to be part of, but what fae list does ANYONE want to be a part of?)

Shift 16 Spirit Evocation affecting 4 zones of enemies in a line applying the aspect "Spiritually Sapped" on all within by having them attacked by ecto-shapes in the area.

crippling my life-force(extreme consequence) to create a kaiju sized ecto-wolf thing to fight the Godzilla/Cloverfield monster.....this turned out to be a "this is what would have happened if Maeve had gotten the book" moment for an Accords court

Okay, here is some facts about Celty:

she is a Dullahan (headless horseman, fae grim reaper)

she is nigh unkillable

usually a Dullahan would carry their head around with them and it would be connected to the body via a soul, Celty had her head cut away and stolen by a mad scientist using an ancient cursed blade

she had the spirit that serves as her horse possess an old motorcycle rather than a horse

she controls and makes things with shadows, including a giant friggin' scythe that seems to knock people out without killing them (mental stress??)

she is drawn to seek and recover her head...but has also started to give up and is also worried that if she finds her head, that it will make her a different person

Here's what I'm thinking so far:

High Concept: The Headless Black Biker
Trouble: My Head is Missing
Background: Holes in my Memory
Rising Conflict: My Possessed Black Bike
The Story: Transporter Celty
Guest Star: Everyone's Cool Big Sister (Shizuo Heiwjima)
Guest Star: Are These Human Feelings? (Shinra Kishitani)

Channeling: Darkness (-2)
Mythic Recovery: Catch: Unknown, Celty theorizes she can be killed through her head somehow, and its part of why she wants to recover it even when she fears that recovering it will make her a different person and end all the human friendships she has.  (-6)

made her mythic recovery because it is apparent that you CAN hurt her...it's just keeping her down that's nearly impossible

Also, might put in a severe consequence of "Terrified of Traffic Cops and Gray Aliens" in there somewhere

Her supernatural driving skills could be invocations of her Black Biker, Possessed Black Bike and Transporter Celty aspects

DFRPG / How to reach Dresden level health status
« on: November 23, 2010, 08:23:19 AM »
our group was facing the Dullahand, sort of the Fae version of the Grim Reaper, the inspiration for the Headless Horseman stories

As the group caster, I decided to cast a spell to set up the Fae in the center of an intense magnetic field as a definition for a weapon 8 Earth attack.

I ended up having to take a few consequences and spending some fate points to make to go off right, but the result was several cars, rebar, a hummer full of WWII era grenades and other assorted area debris slamming into him...

only to discover that he wasn't that easily killed

so, immediately afterward they decide we want to seal him away at least temporarily so we can book, so now I'm helping craft an iron ring and rushing through a binding ritual as the guy is coming back together, with help from the rest of the party (they volunteered to take some consequences for the ritual...adding their blood to the binding)

then I had to use earth magic to bury it deep enough that someone simply walking through the area wasn't going to break the circle.

finally, we learn that one of our number had been infected with balefire in the fight and thus the binding was going to last about half the time we thought it would since while binding him, it was also supercharging his healing

meanwhile, we had to cleanse the party member of balefire before it killed him

at the end of that, I had 8 consequences (I have a lot of mental resilience) and lots of dots filled up and the GM gave us all fate points for how many consequences we had, so I ended with 11 fate points, healing from the NPCs in the area get rid of some of the mild consequences...

and then we decided to contact the Archive about our Denarian related apocalypse situation and someone got the bright idea to open a portal directly to her, for which we needed a heavy load of power....

but first they want me to look at something in a museum with my sight and I find that a Winter veil has covered a Denarian curse around a display case that's supposed to hold the Papal ring coming soon, that cost some fate points to escape more consequences

queue the Dullahand I had sealed earlier and who was getting ready to escape...so we return to where he was bound and wait for just the moment that he escapes before he's free, but after his power is accessible....and drain him dry of power (at least temporarily) to open rifts in space through which the Archive and Kinkaid come

also at this time, I had to have the Sight up to time the spell correctly, so when the extra unintended rifts open up I get a nice eyeview right into some Nevernever underworld....on top of what was going on staring at the Dullahand

more rifts than we wanted open up and a horde of little gremlin thingies come swarming out and we cover for the archive as she cleans up our(my) sloppy spellcasting (at this point I'm operating with "gaping wounds" and "bleeding eyes and ears" physical consequences as well as a small handful of not yet recovered mental milds) I do a couple of simple spells including a "cloud of iron dust" to test to see if the enemy were fae (they weren't...I should probably apologize to the team half-orc at this point) and then the gremlin things smell the blood from my wounds and tons of them come swarming toward me...

At this point, I take a concession to electrocute everything within 10ft of me.

And I'm taken out...

I wake up later when my injuries are mostly gone somehow...something about the supernatural recovering Pharoah Reborn and a blood transfusion....which is how my character's idiot brother became said PCs vassal, so hoping the Pharoah character doesn't think about that....

And then I learn that my character's yakuza assassin family has decided to send a group inbound to "rescue" me from the Wardens....

who are vaguely suspicious (probably convinced) that I'm a warlock and only the greater issue of Denarians, Loki and Maeve plotting some sort of Doomsday thing is keeping them from running a full trial on me....

Author Craft / Self-Promoting
« on: October 29, 2010, 01:10:59 AM »
Okay, I do a lot of this for the simple fact that I don't have anyone else to do it for me.

My question is...how the hell do I promote myself and my work without sounding and feeling like a self-important twit.

I hate saying that I believe that I write better than the majority of published, full time writers out there, but I do.  I don't like comparing myself that way, even if I do hear it from other people.  I hate tooting my own horn.

I always feel tempted to mock myself or approach things from a self-deprecating sort of humor.

But that has the chance of making you look like whiny in addition to being a twit.

Granted, I think whining is a very funny sound to listen to, even if its me doing it, but that's not a good image to present.

I make a lot of attempts to put my book into conversation online or otherwise and I know that puts some people off, but I feel like I'm cheating myself and simply ensuring failure not to do it.

I also know that I have a fairly large readership when it comes to fanfiction...which is why I'm offering some parts of my books for free viewing on my website...I'm trying to get those guys who are used to reading my stuff for free to look at my new stuff, stuff unconnected with anime or manga or other novels.  And then hoping they'll extend that interest to purchase.

Just where is the happy medium where I can promote myself and it doesn't feel selfish every time?

Author Craft / Try to be Predictable and Surprising
« on: October 29, 2010, 01:04:03 AM »
Predictability, very much like stereotypes, has a bad reputation amongst readers and writers alike.  To most people, predictable is the same thing as boring.  They want, or say they want, unpredictable stories that end in ways that they did not expect whatsoever.

"I did not see that coming."

That is one of the phrases that most people connect with a story that is well-written and surprising.

It is something of a misdirection.

Stories are not truly unpredictable.  The closest sorts of stories that can be called unpredictable are things like Looney Toons, Monty Python and Alice In Wonderland.  However, even in this case, the apparent randomness is expected by the viewers and readers.  Same with such humorous works as Discworld, with its mountain of puns.

The unpredictability of these stories is, itself, predictable.  It is well within your expectations in dealing with such things.

True unpredictability is very easy to achieve.  If you decide, out of the blue, to introduce an entirely new character in the last pages of the story in order to solve all the problems, you've just done something unpredictable.

Mystery novel enthusiasts the world over can tell you how popular that sort of thing is.

Anything you do in a story must be either fitting within the framework of what has come before, or establishing the framework for what will come afterwards.  Everything in fiction is defined, and the further in the story you get, the more defined that story becomes.

Unpredictability renders such definitions null and void and ruin the consistency of the story.

However, you still want that appearance of unpredictability.  You want to be surprising.

You do not want the reader to see "it" coming.

Surprising, however, is not the same unpredictable.  You can work with the definition of the world in order to achieve surprise.

When you reach your surprise, or your twist, you want the reader to immediately agree that the sequence makes sense.  You want them to have evidence from earlier parts of the story that points to exactly what you just decided to show them.

This is what we call foreshadowing.

You leave clues strung throughout a story that imply a specific end or result.  The closer an event is to occurring, the more frequent and obvious you want your foreshadowing to be, but you want to start foreshadowing in small, occasional ways for any major event you have decided on as soon as you have decided it.

At the best, you want this foreshadowing to be so minor that nobody notices it until they've reached the end and all those clues click into place.  You want the foreshadowing of minor events in a story combine to foreshadow the greater events.

You want to have enough clues in the storyline that someone who reads your book or story can possibly figure out what is coming, but in a way that few people will piece it together.  The same clue, for instance, can foreshadow many different things coming in the longer story.

Also note that only the reader requires this subconscious level of predictability.  The characters in your story do not need to be able to predict the ending of the story.  In fact, very often, it is better if they can't predict the ending.

Some of the evidence that readers will be using to predict your story, subconsciously or unconsciously, include knowledge of cliches, tropes and stereotypes.  As such, you should be well educated about such things.  It is best to be aware of these rather than let these guide your story entirely, but a lack of awareness of these trends is likely to ruin your surprises.

Some people like to make use of red herrings, clues that lead the reader off in entirely the wrong direction.  For my own style, I do not prefer to deliberately create truly extraneous and misleading clues.  Instead, I prefer to have clues that can be read in more than one way.  To me, it is best if the reader creates their own red herrings rather than for me to give them a primrose path leading off in the wrong direction.

Author Craft / Writing skills discussions
« on: October 21, 2010, 07:32:22 AM »
For those interested, I've been trying to keep a semi-daily updating blog.

Currently, most of the entries have been about writing.

The blog is here if you're interested.  I draw examples mostly from my own original novels, but a couple of times from other places.

The repetition and anti-hero topics could be better.

DFRPG / Invasion and Enthralling Question
« on: August 23, 2010, 07:06:20 AM »
If someone else is invading your mind, and they happen to be there at the moment, is it breaking the Law to, in self defense, tear their minds to pieces?

Assuming you have that level of skill or power, of course.

DFRPG / Arachnae Bioware
« on: August 07, 2010, 03:31:58 AM »
I'm going to put my original write up for d20 Modern (minus stats) in a reply...maybe two dependent on character limit

Changes for Dresdenverse:
The Arachnae of Arachnae Bioware are actually descended from a variety of spider-based scions and spirit folk.  Primarily these would be shapechanging goblin-spiders that escaped their eradication at the hands of the samurai in Japan and ended up breeding with humanity in Russia and China.  Up until recently, the heritage has remained muted, but some magical effect has, in the recent past caused them to express into a large group of scions and changelings.  While the Chinese/Russian ethnic groups are strongest, the Arachne would consider spider-scions that hale from descent of the Greek Arachne as well as the African Anansi spirit as well as others.  In fact, the Arachne as a whole probably lack enough supernatural knowledge to know precisely what they are.

Alignment in Dresdenverse: In general, a basically isolationist neutral, neither wanting to harm those around them or stick their neck out to help others.  Katya Chin's connections with humans means that her faction might be a bit more leaning toward taking part in the world.  Ms Chin would almost be a mirror of Marcone in attitude, willing to kill to protect her people and work behind the scenes as well as make alliances.  Some of the other factions of the Arachnae are more likely to follow one of these philosophies: total isolation, interaction in secret (currently most popular), pre-emptive attacks, cooperation.

Power Scale in Dresdenverse: They'd be big enough to get in the news occasionally, but not so big or in fad that people really pay them much attention.  They probably have more of a public splash than Monoc due to their background in fashion, but less of an impact in business and supernatural affairs.  They are not heavy hitters overall...maybe Fellowship of St. Giles level power.

Templates:

Face

Faces appear to the naked eye as if they are as human as everybody else save for some mild differences.  They are the Arachne most end up dealing with.  Faces are not the most common Arachne, and are in fact rather uncommon, but they are the ones that handle the human employees that the Arachne must deal with now.  Katya Chin is a face and the current recognized leader by most of the Arachne, though some believe that she is a figurehead and get annoyed when she acts otherwise.  Faces tend to have an urge to prove themselves useful and often interact with humanity on a more regular business.  Most of Katya Chin's assassination teams are faces, for example.  As such, despite lacking some of the same level of power as their relatives, it is the faces who can be considered the most dangerous of the species.

Musts: A high concept that describes their species such as "Arachne Assassin" or "Public Face of the Arachne" or something of the sort.

Spider Walk (-1)

Spinnerettes/Webbing, bought as Rituals focused on Crafting: webbing (-2)

Options:
Some faces may have learned combat applications of their webbing, buy that as Channelling: Webbing (-2)

Important Skills: Deceit and Empathy are highly important to faces for the most part, other skills will show up based on their specific task (assassin, manager, public relations, celebrity, etc)

Minimum Refresh Cost: -3

Weaver

Weavers have two human eyes with red irises and six eye-spots set in pairs up from their forehead.  The first feature most people notice about them, however, are their six-arms.  Weavers are the calmest of the Arachne and tend to be split between crafters and spiritual leaders.  They come across as very friendly, even if they dislike a person.

Musts: Must have a high concept that relates to their species or breed.  "Arachne Priest" or "Weaver Philosopher"

Spider Walk (-1)
The Sight (-1)
Webbing crafting as per Faces (-2)

Options: Some Weavers might be have true talent in the magical arts or else you can say their spirituality comes from True Faith abilities.

Important Skills: Rapport and Conviction, in addition levels of Fists or Might might represent the advantage of having multiple arms.

Minimum Refresh: -4

Hunters

Hunters have thick skin that invariably gives them the appearance of being heavily muscled.  They are incredibly strong and have large, multi-faceted eyes.  They tend to have a large variety of skin colorations, including mutli-colored patterns.  Hunters, like most Arachne, are private about their life, in addition they are reserved and very cautious.  They are also aggressively protective of people they consider friends.

Musts: Must have a high concept that relates to their species or the company.  "Heavy Hitter for Arachne Security" or "Hunter Bodyguard"

Spider Walk (-1)
Claws (-1)
Inhuman Strength (-2)
Inhuman Toughness (-2)
Catch: Toxins (+1)

Options: Some might be venomous.

Important Skills: Endurance, Alertness, some combat skills

Minimum Refresh: -5

Spiders

Spiders have the upper body a human being and the lower body of a spider.  They tend to be hyperactive, very tactile and affectionate.  They are the most bizarre, by human standards, in both mind and body.  Spiders have little concept of tact and are rarely disturbed by anything.  The majority have a very scientific outlook and a fervent interest in the natural world.  Several claim they can understand spiders, insects and other such creatures and seem to have an empathic connection with them.

Musts: Must have a high concept that relates to their species such as "Spider Mortician" or "Hive Mistress"

Echoes of the Beast (-1)
Webbing as Faces (-2)
Spider-walk (-1)
Inhuman Speed (-2)
Claws: Venomous (-3)

Options: Some might eventually learn to manipulate their insects and spiders more completely via magic of some kind and gain Channeling or Rituals in that regard.  Others might learn combat applications of their webbing as Faces and Weavers can.

Important Skills: Lore and Scholarship, learning is their primary desire, Survival might also represent their naturalistic attitude.

Minimum Refresh: -9
