DF Spoilers / Who else is out there?
« on: December 04, 2022, 04:26:36 PM »
During a recent reread of BG one of Eb's lines stuck out to me.
Quote
Not everybody, boy. Not even close.
Battle Ground page 53 (hardback). So my question is, who or what else is out there? I know we haven't seen many gods or demon kings, but while there are many parthenons I feel like there is more out there that we haven't seen or thought about. Doing some quick math, there were 13 groups active in the defensive (White Council, White Court, Winter Court, Summer Court, Ghouls, Mortals, Svartalves, Odin/Vadderung, Forest People, Erlking, Archive, Knights of the Cross, Ferrovax) if these major groups are not even close to the whole of the supernatural who else is there and how many groups haven't we seen? Or who do you want to see?

DF Spoilers / Re: Mab is cleaning up the White Court

The WAG (an offhand idea, really; but we need some reason that Raith Sr. had killed all his other sons, but Thomas lived to adulthood).

I always figured the reason why Papa Raith didn't kill Thomas was that he was unable to perform his "kiss of death," or if he could still perform it, it would take too much energy weakening him in the long run. Papa Raith always used this ability to kill off his other sons, and it would look strange that Thomas was killed in another way. The rest of the White Court would see this as something changed with Papa Raith, which could then lead to him losing power.

Yup, so apparently there is one under every rock, we now know of at least three..

I've seen this comment (or those like it a lot), but I just don't understand it. Yes, there have been more Starborns revealed (two) in the last book than the previous 16, but still having three is VERY small in the large scheme of the DresdenVerse. Even if you included the possible/suspected Starborns (5 total called out previously in this thread), then you still have less than half a dozen. I understand that Starborns are rare and that something is killing them off, but it is not inconceivable that we have seen 3 or 5 of them (from varying cycles) over 17 books.

DF Spoilers / Re: The castle and the island, theory

Because the same runes are in the Castle and on the Island, I expect there is a direct Way between them.

They are not the same runes. It is in the same style/configuration but not the exact same. I don't have my books with me, but I think the books or WOJ says it is second-generation Merlin/Demonreach wards.

DF Spoilers / Re: Personality and Magic Affinity

Another thought...

Jim has made a point to show us that a wizard needs to believe in what they are doing for it to happen. This was shown recently in The Law but also in Torn Coat when Laccio didn't/couldn't use magic to kill LaFortier. Could this system of belief have a role to play in what you are best at? So if you believe you are good at finding things or elemental magic, maybe that becomes stronger? I admit this is a bit of a stretch but an interesting thought.

DF Spoilers / Personality and Magic Affinity
« on: July 30, 2022, 05:33:27 PM »
With the recent thread on minor talents, it got me thinking about what causes someone to be better at some elements than others. I wonder if personality has a role in this? Harry is very emotional and can go on rampages. Fire is very destructive, spreads quickly, and can rampage. On the other hand, Morgan was very sturdy and had a strong belief in the law, and was a very talented earth mage. Earth is very much the same.

That kind of depends on how you define a good boss. She causes Harry to stab himself in the hand.(Summer Knight) Alters his mind.(Small Favor) She slams his head into an elevator car.(Skin Game)

Mab has to use force in these circumstances because that's what Harry responds to. Harry was rather naive in SK, and Mad exerting her power over him (after he insulted her) showed him who had the power in the relationship. In Small Favor, Mab took his memories away to protect him from the Summer Court. Then in SG, Harry offered an insult to Mab in public, so he had to be taught a lesson; a strongly worded conversation would not have done the trick. Mab may not be a good boss, but she is the boss she needs to be to control/guide Harry and the mortal realm. Now that Harry is starting to be less aggressive and think ahead more, I would think Mab would stop beating him as an underling and talking to him as more of a peer because Harry is ready for that kind of relationship.

DF Spoilers / Re: Lawyers and dating Lara Raith

I would love for there to be a time frame for their dates and/or actions. For example, at least 5 minutes of hand-holding or kisses may last no longer than 30 seconds but no less than 5 and Harry is counting the seconds in his head.

I agree, it seems a thing that fits both of them.

It fits them both because they both are nearly the same being. Remember in CD Mother Summer says something to the effect of "What my counterpart knows so do I."

I would think only beings with Intellectus would be aware of Demonreach and what exactly it is. Very few beings have a comprehensive Intellectus, we have seen only three, mothers Winter, Summer and Uriel. I doubt even Anduriel can see into Demonreach, but it gives him a nice warm vibe.

The bad vibe it gives is attractive to bad guys in the same way that warehouse keeps getting used for murder, or like Chichen Itsa. If they knew what it was they wouldn’t go near it, it’s a trap.

All good points, however, somehow Eb, Rashid, and The Merlin know about the island and at least part of its true purpose. On page 495 of Turn Coat, the following important bits are written as part of Eb's journal. With this in mind, I would add these senior council members, Vadderung, and all/most of the members of the Gray Council to the list of individuals who know Deamonreache's true purpose (second quote, Cold Days page 249). I would assume all or most of these additions would know because they all have connections to the original Merlin.

Quote
seems clear that he had no idea of the island's original purpose. ... The Merlin has demanded that we put the boy under surveillance at once ... Rashid says that warning him about the island would be pointless ... And of all the wizards I know, he's among the three or four I'd be willing to see take up that particular mantle

Quote
I'm aware of how important it is that the island be well managed. Most of the people who came to your party in Mexico are.

Mab is well-above Lara in personal power, in ability to lay deep & devious plots, and in the scope of her power-base (the Winter Court is MUCH vaster and more-widespread than the White Court, and top winterfae personally outclass top Whamps 1:1, all the way down the line to the weakest Whamps... and there's STILL hordes of winterfae).

Yes, Mab/the Winter Court is more powerful as far as individual power and vastness but the White Court has power in other ways. From what I recall, Nameless is the first Winter Court associate we have seen holding power in the mortal realm. On the other hand, Lara has lots of federal government power. At the end of BG Mab turned to Lara to help control the narrative and keep the peace. Also, Lara did something to earn 3 favors from Mab. All this adds up to the White Court being powerful enough that Mab wants a lasting alliance through marriage to fortify both courts.

(Plot hole for BG: Why didn't Harry use Soul Fire on Ethniue?).

I have had the same thought. I wonder if Harry used so much Soul Fire when creating his ice wall to slow down the Jotuns that he didn't want to risk using anymore? Or after losing Murphy he couldn't access it temporarily. Remember Bob said that the soul grows back with laughter and joy (or something like that), maybe Harry didn't have any joy in him when facing Ethniue so he couldn't use it? Like when Harry couldn't create the pocket chief of sunshine in SK because of what happened to Susan.

The obvious reason for Nameless to seek shelter in Winter is that he was in fact doing an Arnim Zola for the Circle, Mab may have foreseen this and decided to keep him close and locked down by Winter Law. For all we have seen of Cowl his only interaction with Winter was giving Lea the Athame, for which he was heavily disguised suggesting Lea might otherwise recognise him. If Cowl is Nameless this makes sense. Giving Lea the Athame should not be a violation of Winter Law on the part of Nameless but look at the damage that did to Winter. Almost as though Cowl was looking for a loophole in Winter Law.

The scene in Nameless meeting room  dwells upon three items one is obviously Checkov’s Bear Skull, one is a scrimshawed Walrus Tusk (a gift from Lacuna?) the last is a cruelly curved dagger. I believe we have only seen one person with a magical dagger before, Cowl in Grave Peril.

Good point about Lea recognizing Cowl but that does not prove that Nameless is Cowl. Remember Harry thinks that the reason why Cowl and Kumori hid themselves in their clocks is because HE (or others) would recognize them from the White Council. Also, if Nameless is as powerful as Bob says he is why has Harry beaten him in their past meetings? Finally, if Kumori is Lapland then why has Harry not felt the sexual "wammy" that he felt? Why would Lapland hide this ability or for that matter why would Lapland want to "cure death"?

Also, do y'all really think Jim would introduce Cowl's real identity in a novella? Especially one that is just an electronic read for now? From the other novella's/short stories only Bigfoot has been introduced and re-appeared in the main books.

Back to the OP, why does Nameless need to seek shelter under the protection of Winter/Mab as a vassal? It sounds like he is very powerful. Why is he not a Freeholder Lord? Also, what could Mab get out of the deal? As pointed out by Bob Nameless is a difficult ally to have because his aura(?) creates division and chaos, not things you want when planning for a battle. We know that Mab does nothing without reason so what could her reason be for bringing Nameless as her vassal? Also, we'll probably see him again in 12 Months because he is probably the Lawyer reviewing the conditions for Harries and Lara's dates.

I like your idea; however, why would Christ wait until year 33 to sacrifice himself? Wouldn't it have made more since to sacrifice himself at the start of creation? Maybe the Outsiders were about to break through, and Christ's sacrifice was to reinforce the barrier? I had a WAG a while back where I proposed that the five artifacts could summon Christ himself.

On the other hand, I am not sure Jim would change the reason for Jesus's crucifixion/life. It is such an important moment to so many people that it could be dangerous for his career/book sales to mess too much with it.
