I'd love to see/make a shirt with a burning building, with the letter above
"The building was on fire
Then letters below
"and it wasn't MY fault!"

Author Craft / Re: The Author is NOT the Character.
« on: October 29, 2010, 09:47:44 AM »
I was remarking the same thing to myself the other day that I am so very, very much unlike Lucretia (main character of Bystander)

You know, I enjoy writing characters that are really not very much like me. But the funny thing is occasionally they're so different from me that it really takes ME a while to get around to understanding them.
Nothing I've written is published, but in my latest fiction, I had a great story, and a great character, but the two didn't fit quite right, I didn't understand her. I had to muddle through a lot of brainstorming and back story creation before I finally had that moment of "Aha! That's who you are! I GET it!"
The down side being that now that I have made her REAL I'm stuck with yet another character voice in my head.  :D

Landing... It's a little bit of both. I agree that you can find nuances of a writer in their work. I personally love it when I read a character like Harry who is so very detailed and REAL, and then I get to know that the author shares some of the same interests/quirks.
But I think in the field of writing, especially in creating fiction, its very important that the reader not let their emotions get carried away. Would Jim write about his character killing someone as a point of action and intensity in the story? Yes. Would Jim himself use violence, or condone that sort of violence just because he writes about it? Hardly.

But, after all, I might be biased because I'm a pretty brutal writer. In the epic series I have outlined with a co-writer, we kill off a LOT of the important characters. And we do so quite heartlessly. Because the characters no matter how beloved, needed to DIE to further the story. They're martyrs to the cause. I promise.

I don't think I can agree with you, from all my experience if a author has written enough you are able to tell certain things about their beliefs. Granted some you will be able to tell less about then others, but if the reader is skilled enough they will be able to learn things about how the author thinks.

Because you know... It's not like Jim Butcher likes Burger King or Coke.  ;)  :D
What I got out of the article is that the problem lies not in people judging an author for conveyed opinions, but in people judging the author for a characters direct actions.
"Changes" is a good example of this, because Harry starts to morph from a hero into more of an antihero, and some people were deeply uncomfortable with that as being an expression of an authors belief that 'the ends justify the means'. It's not that simple, and it's likely not the direct opinion of the author, rather its a tool to move a character through the crucible to force them into further development.

Is it in fact some subtle intimation that no good thing can triumph over evil unstained? Maybe, but I doubt it. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

Author Craft / The Author is NOT the Character.

As much as we might not want it to happen, but if you write... Especially if you write something provocative... You will have people making the assumption that you agree with them, or secretly mirror their habits. People inevitably blame the author when they feel something goes too far in a book. Just look at the amount of fan distress and outrage when 'Changes' came out. (This is also why I -don't- let my certain family members read my more intense fiction.)

An author I love wrote a little bit about the subject, and I thought I'd share it here.
This is author Seanan Mcguire who's written "Rosemary & Rue" "A Local Habitation" and "An Artificial Night" among others.

And this is why the PG snark-theater is ALWAYS worth it.  ;D

I do appreciate that there's less spite, and people are behaving better. I also like that old posters are visiting.

I guess it'll take me a while to get over the culture shock. I wasn't even able to log on when the changes first got posted, so for me it's a little bit like I left home, and the place burned down... They were able to save the best parts, but everything that wasn't a priority got lost in the blaze.
I'm the sort of person who keeps everything, so it's hard to adjust to NOT having everything where I can find it. Like I said, I don't figure things will change just to suit me, but I'll get adjusted at some point.

I want to see y'all. Especially most of my friends who've already commented here. But I just don't know when I'll have time to be on frequently and I hate... missing out... on all these threads that get deleted.
Life for me has been really stressful and tense. Hope I can get through all this personal stuff and come back in a better frame of mind to enjoy the board.

While I do feel posting here a month after the last post is a trifle close to nechromancy by the new thread age standards... Nonetheless I shall try to say my piece.

I don't feel like a 'leper' but I do still feel quite lost in the new forum. I always liked the fact that the threads ran long, and the topics had a chance to grow and mutate and become far more interesting, and often hilarious, before they reached 50 pages and got cut. Conversations were easier to play out without a chronological 'enddate', and since threads now END at the last post, new threads are often started days later, with no way to keep track of what was previously said.

I also desperately miss the 'Angst' corner. Yes, there was drama there (that was the point) and some of it was intense, but it was also cathartic to have a place to simply explode in text... Knowing you would have sympathy and empathy from intelligent friends. While I appreciate the efforts to create 'advice threads', most of the time I don't need or want ADVICE... I want to say "X really sucks and I hate it" and someone else can say "I know how you feel" "Feel better" "hugs" or some other heartfelt plattitude that helps get me through the day.

I know the place got ruined by people with too much drama. I know at least once I lost my head. I also know that what's done has been done. Probably for good. Probably forever. But I miss the old Macs. I miss my friends, and there's a void in my online social life where the old bar used to be. I miss the fun, the wackiness, and the way a thread could wander through twelve distinctly different subjects before it lost steam.

Like I said, what's done is done. I don't expect that what I'm saying will really affect a change, and I'm not deleting my account and running away. but I just had to say I miss the way it was. This place doesn't feel like home anymore, it feels more like a hotel... You're welcome to visit, just make sure your thread checks out on time.
That's all I'm going to say. Please don't take this to mean I need to get banned.

Display Case / Re: Name a Dresden Drink!
« on: June 14, 2010, 10:17:55 PM »
Since I can't have Mac's I'll have one of my father in laws microbrewed beers. But no, I don't drink beer.
I do like to mix drinks, so perhaps I can think of one to add.

'Charity' Virgin Raspberry Mojito (I figure Charity doesn't approve of alcohol)

1 oz Sugar Syrup,
10-15 fresh spearmint leaves (You can get them at herb section. Or grow them.)
10-12 fresh raspberries
3/4 oz lime juice
1 cup ice
Sprite

Start by pulverizing the mint (muddling) in the bottom of the mixer with the sugar syrup. This brings out the flavor and gets the syrup all minty.
Add Raspberries, lime juice, and ice. Shake vigoruosly until mixture is well blended and frosty.
Poor into a tall glass, top with a few more ice cubes, and then finish off the glass with sprite.
Stir and garnish with a couple whole raspberries.

This comes out pretty awesome. I made it in a punch bowl for a bridal shower once, and the girls couldn't taste a difference between it and a boozey mojito at all. Plus you can drink all you want!

ATM Neither Faery Maids or Eldest Gruff is showing in the store.
Could be that they're still rennovating.

I made a shirt for my husband, based on the icons here.
"Are you always a wiseass?"
"No, sometimes I'm asleep."

Even if I can't get him to read the books, the quote was too fitting for him to ignore.

Blaze... This ones for you.

My first attempt at edible art. Nummy white chocolate easter noms.
I can't eat chocolate anymore, so this is one of THOSE holidays where I've felt left by the wayside.
So I got the stuff to make my own WHITE chocolate candy.

Made with melted tollhouse white choc. chips.
Plus making these was SO fun! You literally PAINT with CHOCOLATE. Even Lilbit (who's 3 now) got to help.

Jims not coming my way this year. But he was an hour away from me in 08... And apparently came to my town (AND NO ONE TOLD ME!  :o  :o  >:( ) in 2007. Of course I didn't join the Boards until 2008 so I have only myself to blame.
Meeting him was a joy, and I really want another chance to meet both him and Shannon again. Shannon is just as awesome as Jim. Really!
Currently the closest he's comng to Colorado is Tuscon. Which is disappointing, because my husband won't take out a loan so I can go.  ;) :D
