Calendar Event Discussion / Re: MileHiCon in Denver, CO: Oct 24-26, 2008

Since Backup isn't due to ship to retail locations until the end of October, what are the chances of Jim having some copies that an avid fan might pick up at the Con?

I was contacted off the forum by "Who Else!" books who was having login issues, so they have asked me to reply:

We'll be in the dealers room at Mile Hi Con Oct 24-26 and will have a
wide assortment of Jim's books in both paperback and hardcover.  This
will include the newly released The Dresden Files: Welcome to the
Jungle (the Del Rey edition) and Backup (trade hardcover), the latter
of which is being specially shipped to us by the publisher.  We'll
also, of course, have copies of Shannon's books:  No Regrets, No
Control and No Escape.  We have a good time at Mile Hi Con, so drop
by and see us if you're there.  It's a great Con (this is its 40th
year) and you'll love meeting authors, going to panels and readings,
enjoying the costume contest, art show, literacy auction, Critter
Crunch, autographing sessions and the like.  --  Who Else! Books

I always like to assist in supporting local businesses, and conventions are one of the places I can do that, so I hope that helps.  I otherwise can claim no affiliation with the business, but they left me a nice note.

I'm thinking of going to this. Anyone have an idea of how many people are likely to attend, what the con is like, etc.? I've checked out the site, but I'd like to get a sense of the event from someone who has gone in the past.

Honestly, the website bites.

The con floats a little shy of a thousand people in good years.  Panels are either directed specifically to certain authors or are fairly informal and often flirt with fun rather than serious discussion, but it's notable that there are a lot of them.  Events are pretty well entrenched; Friday night has the meet the guests stuff, some fun pajama-style panels in the evening. There's a Masquerade on Saturday night and then the Klingon "hit me with a bopper" bat'leth tourney that usually goes until late. Sunday has the robotic critter crunch and art auction.  Gaming's 24 hours, although it's been pretty boardgame-focused the last few years, and real late you'll mostly get a lot of "Apples 2 Apples" and "Werewolves."  Anime and movies are scheduled well.  Con suite can generally feed you, but no promises past meal times.  I'd say the parties are generally underwhelming, but it depends on what you're looking for.  Some years they've had a dance and that's been, well, meh.  Filking's generally around, but that's an acquired taste - having had such a strong track at the recent WorldCon here it might get an infusion of strength, but again, that's conjecture.  I can say very nice things about their volunteer coordinators.

As for access to guests, that's somewhat ruled by the guests' intention, but the ones who have wanted to be friendly have never had any problem wandering through and meeting folks.

[YMMV, exceptions always apply, near everything I've said might be refuted by someone else less cynical.]

jtaylor for the win!  That's a fabulous idea and gives me the chance to make it for a player who arrives after dark.  If the pirate is scheduled to arrive sooner, I may just go with that wizard modification falar suggested.

Yeah, I have stuff for FATE all over my computer, but no time.  Not the kind of time to address it with the attention I want to, at least.  Thanks for the link, though!

DFRPG / April Birthday LARP, as it stands now.

Alright, no copy of FATE, Spirit of the Century, or anything related (yet), but I've been asked to run a freeform Dresdenverse LARP for my sister's birthday.  The things I've been told to include (why does this feel like Game Chef all of a sudden?) is a "member of the Alpha's pack who has moved to Colorado Springs," and "a pirate.  Or someone who thinks they're a pirate."  The birthday girl has read everything published and watched all of the TV,  although not everyone participating will be as caught up (especially as it's coming up this next month) so I want something more introductory to the universe.

Fey and vampires both are in my repertoire.  Her favourite character is Thomas (which is why she's got her own Ticker to White Night's release), although she likes just about everyone except Susan.

I'm having trouble working in the pirate.  Any suggestions?

Jim will be attending the Pike's Peak Writers Conference: http://www.ppwc.net/ppwc07.html
April 20-22nd, 2007.

Outside of the conference, will there be any signings or other sightings in the area?

I'm running a Dresden Files game for my group and I thought I would share my idea.

I'm currently designing a Dresden Files-inspired game based around the Colorado Springs area. (The theory is that one of the so-far unnamed Alphas moved; that's the character my little sister wants to play, and I think my husband will be playing someone who was tempted by a Denarian.)  We're using (for the moment) Stellar Games' "Nightlife" system, and I'm trying to introduce some of the native 'wildlife' and old mining tunnels and the like to the idea.  The War continues.

they also don't account for why Harry is more likely to jam an automatic than a revolver, despite the fact that the automatic may be a simpler machine.  Go figure.

One of the unusual things Harry said regarding technology and magic was its timeline; wasn't it things built after World War II (the event of which there's been some mentions here and there of having a significant magical component) that had a problem?  That suggests something there in that event, or a magical "lag" before catching up to the delicacy of technology, or even opening up a whole new type of magic that wizards can't tap into (technoshamanism, anyone?)

DFRPG / Re: At what point in the series....

At what point in the series will the RPG be set? (Since some characters tend to change somewhat as the series evolves.)

One other note is that, well, this is the age of the Internet.  It's perfectly possible to say, "As characters change, write-ups may be found at our web site."  Although, if I recall correctly from what has been revealed of the system, that's not going to be a major issue anyway, depending what plot points on which you're basing the characters.  New talents and/or creatures are the stuff of supplements, anyway.
