I think that Fred has been under the assumption that everyone here knows all about the Dresden Files RPG, but clearly some of the posters here don’t know anything about RPGs at all, and may know even less about the Dresden Files RPG in specific. Therefore, for those who do not already know much about the game, here is an information thread.
While I certainly am not an expert on this, I have spent lots of time over the past couple of weeks trying to figure out anything about the game that I can. Here are a few links that will give you some information about the game.
First, here is the main webpage for the Dresden Files RPG.
http://www.dresdenfilesrpg.com/
The Dresden Files RPG will be based off of the Fate RPG (also by Fred), which can be downloaded for free here:
http://www.faterpg.com/dl/
And the game system will be similar to the one in “Spirit of the Century”, which will be released first. This is the best way to get a preview of the game mechanic that will make the Dresden Files RPG work. (With the exception of the magic system, which Fred says is not the same in both games.)
http://www.evilhat.com/spirit/
Finally, the company producing the Dresden Files RPG is Evil Hat Productions. Here is their main page:
http://www.evilhat.com/
I just thought a little advertising would be a good thing.

Well done, sir. Carry on!
-
thanks for the url's i didnt even know there was a game
-
See ... it's working! More recruits to the RPG world.
-
I play RPGs but I'm not familiar with those mentioned. Anybody give me a hint about the game system, basically dice rolls, and what dice are used??

I'm starting a new thread for this. I would think that cluttering up an "information" thread with other side-questions would be counterproductive.

Thanks for the info, I also did not know that there was a RPG!!!! I don't usually do RPG, but I will for this! Again, thanks for the info. ::)
-
While we're at it...Rob, please introduce yourself. I mostly know you from Fred's email sig about cursing his fast fingers. ;)
-
Sweet! An RPG that I'd be more than willing to get hooked on! Coming from me, that's saying something. I've only found two that really caught my attention.
-
Hello,
What's the latest world on a release for this? Soon-ish? Not so soon-ish? Looking forward to it either way.
Thanks,
wlg

*Probably* the later half of 2007.

;D woohooo!!!!!!!! Finally a rpg worthy playing............
-
though a side note... evil hat is doing the game when are they play testing it? Is it based on the d20 system, percentiles, etc....
-
Ahhh its done in the FUDGE system.... I guess its simplistic way of chara creation.... Though looking over the SofC pdf file it looks interesting...
-
More accurately, it's built on Fate, which is built on Fudge. Spirit of the Century is another based in the same manner. At least, if I've got all my ducks in the right rows. And I'm pretty sure I do.
-
when are they play testing it?
Keep in mind that the basic Fate3 system really needs no playtesting because that was done for Spirit of the Century. The majority of the work now is tinkering with the magic system (which is different from SotC) as well as development of "Dresden Baltimore" (which will be a potential "default" setting designed to compliment but not conflict with "Dresden Chicago" and Jim's writings).
-
I'll have to check this game out. I've not done pen & paper in years, due to the overly irritating nature of the few people in my area who actually play (I have the heads of several rules lawyers on the wall in the cellar)...but this sounds too good to pass up...even if it means *teaching* my wife and friends to *enjoy* P&P rather than MMORG's. (You're having fun now, honey, aren't you? Here...drink this...you don't mind the graphics now, do you sweetie? Thaaaat's a good girl...)
Quite the effort will be required, but I know none of them can pass up the opportunity to visit Dresden's world.
I know I can't pass it up.
-
I think that the secret to running a good RPG campaign is to surround yourself with people with the "right" gaming philosophy. My present group is a bunch of people who are not rules sticklers and they are more interested in playing a role and having fun then they are trying to lawyer their way through a game session.
Many of my games end up as "just roll a die and we'll see what happens" and are in this way very loose and free with the rules. While not all players are comfortable with this type of play, having players trust the GM is half the battle -- they have to trust that we're all trying to spin a good yarn and have a good time.
-
I'm not so good at RPGs. Most of the gaming I've ever done was via CCG or simple board games like Zombies! So for the RPG challenged, how easy is it?
And what's the timeline before this game is ready for market? I go to Dragon*Con every year. That would be a good place to test it or promote it. There is a lot of open/free gaming areas. I hosted a Zombies tournament last year.

Ah, I was wondering just how much information the game would add to the books.
Guess this kind of answers the question.

There is an entire spectrum of RPGs out there, and I would advise you to do some research before buying many of them. On one end of the spectrum you will find rules-lite systems (or some with essentially no rules) which are designed to get people telling stories together. On the other end are rules-heavy systems, which are designed to be more "realistic" simulations of a particular setting. I find that 3rd Edition Dungeons & Dragons, for example, is a very popular game but is very hard to learn by yourself.
The secret to any RPG is having trust in the person running the game. That person invests a lot of time creating a situation for the players to experience. However, with that power comes the responsibility of running a game where the players can change events. (Many Game Masters seem to enjoy a process called "railroading" where an adventure is linear like a book or movie, and no matter what the players do they will arrive at exactly the same ending. Most players hate this and would rather read a book or watch a movie.) If your players trust you to run a good game, you can probably run any rules system in any campaign world and people will have fun.
Dresden Files is going to be released using the FATE game system, and you can get free information from http://www.faterpg.com/dl/ (http://www.faterpg.com/dl/). If you’re new to RPGs you might find someone who already plays to teach you (it’s much easier to learn by example) or download free RPGs like FATE and read about it yourself. Give it a try and don’t worry about messing up the rules too much. Go in to have fun. I’ve been playing RPGs since 1975, have read and/or played dozens of game systems, and have been a playtester for several games. It’s a great hobby and one you can enjoy for years to come. I’m teaching my children about RPGs and they love it, too.
Good luck, and if you have questions be sure to ask.

Thanks for the reply Fred. I'd rather wait a while longer than get a game rushed into production.
-
Thank you all for the Thread. As soon as I read about the Dresden Files RPG I decided to buy it. When is the question for me at the moment. I was reading the laws of magic but I have been unable to add any
intelligent thoughts about it so I decided to wait. I voted for most of the extras but when I actually get it my thought has been ....what do I do with the game now? This will be my first RPG but I know it will be great. Right now I need to be finding a new job.....exercise a bit...once I get things in order then I can really
learn all I can but I will definitely check the other web sites out. It is great to know there are a few others out there that have yet to play a RPG.

I am also looking forwad to the release of this.
-
I am impressed. I have played so many different game systems and i have not seen one like the one represented in the Fate application. Its simplicity in structure of how a character evolves in wonderful.. and it emphasizes character acting by its very nature. By differentiating between aspects for character definition and aspects for personality and flavor and giving flexibility to how they impact teh genre leaves a lot of flexibility to the gamesmaster...
I am looking forward to hopefully being selected for games testing... i just applied and have spent the evening learning the basics of fate... It has been a long time since I have found a system so logically crafted..
well done..
looking forward to its release.. and perhaps if i made it into testing..helping with fleshing out the system.. and backgrounds :P
-
I have now read Fate and Spirit of the Century
I couldnt help but notice that there was no use of the category of Extras in SotC ... If I am not mistaken.. extras are skill like characteristicss which are always on... i can think of a great many uses for this .. it would account for so many of the mystical abilities ...
I cant also help but note.. that u could have seperate skill pyramids for the magical abilities... magic players split their skills.. which would make them less effective in some ways in mundane skills.. but would them access to a range of skills that mundanes would not have access to..
I would definitely include any extras into this pyramid... because to me this would represent honing natural talents or learned ones.. Any of the potential Spheres of magic or mystical ability to be tied to skills... and the more powerful versions or spells being stunts for these skills..
extras could account for potions... weapons... items... and whole range of things... it would make your magical system flexible.. but structured..
have i fallen off the deep end..
I have a lot of ideas about this.. but without seeing a structure that u are attempting to use.. i cant make any comments.. i can only share what i have done myself..
if you want.. i can work up some things .. and present them to see what u think...
btw.. are vampires.. werewolves.. fae... are they going to be open to player characters?? or are they going to be limited to mainly npcs?
by the way the use of extras would allow for the minor mystics that are all over the dresdenverse... there are other options as well..
such as allowing the mundanes or others to purchase mystical abilities with an appropriate aspect.. and especially for those who have only one ability... what would seem to make sense is allowing them to take multiple stunts .. and treat them like its own pyramid.
so lets say some one has ectomancy...
ectomancy would be the aspect..
so the extra would be the skill read object
the first stunt might be ... when the object is held, u get a visual image of the last person who touched it
now.. before you could buy a more powerful version of this stunt, you must diversify slightly, such as possible,
stunt. u get an emotional impression of the last person who touched it..
so u have to have 2 stunts in read object before you could develop one more powerful... and different..
thus allowing for progression.. but forcing a streamlined and controlled growth..
what do you think..
-
'Extras' are more a Fate 2.0 implementation feature, whereas SOTC is a Fate 3.0 build (done in advance of Fate 3.0 actually existing -- we wrote SOTC in part to figure out where we wanted to take Fate in a new implementation). Extras in SOTC are more represented by Stunts and Gadgets.
-
I guess i will wait until i get accepted into the alpha or beta testing than... :P i can see alot of different ways that powers can be respresented... and i am curious than about which dynamics you will use.. havent seeen a work up yet online of 3.0... so i will look more.. and i like the core concept of SotC. Curious as well how u will deal with advancement.. because SotC is a fairly static in skill advancement, it seems to suggests buy more stunts, and more aspects, and fate points... but i am very excited ... and looking forward to testing the ideas... i luv gaming..
thanks for the opportunity even to talk about it in these forums..

True: but there are lots of people out here that are willing to help others learn. And not just for D&D 3e.
Check out your local Gaming and Comic Book Stores and you should be able to find at least a few Gamers.
Another place to check would be the RPGA's Convention Website for a Con full of RPG fanitics that you can attend:
http://events.wizards.com/rpgaweb/external/calendar.asp (http://events.wizards.com/rpgaweb/external/calendar.asp)

Having Fun is the entire point of Roleplaying. I mean, if it's not fun, then go play your Nintendo / Wii / X-Box / etc
- or watch a movie; or read a book; or hang out with friends; or do something else that you enjoy.

Very nice advice. I wish that there were more people like finarvyn to play with near me!!
Good luck, and if you have questions be sure to ask.
This goes from me as well.

Ok, here at work the RPG's page is blocked by the fire wall because it falls under the "games" category of things to block so the employees might actually get some work done. Do we have an official release date for the rule books yet?

Awesome. Many thanks, a site that isn't blocked. :)
-
If Evil Hat's website isn't blocked either, multiple designer blogs (and the dresdenfilesrpg.com news feed) are all aggregated on the "blogs" page that you can get to clicking on the blogs button at the top of www.evilhat.com

Shadow of the Century: A "sequel" to Spirit of the Century set in 1984. . . Imagine the A-Team written by Chandler.
That sounds almost as cool as the DF game is gonna be. ;D

Is there an actual, updated, official, FAQ for the Dresden Files RPG?
I had been looking back through the archives here, at the Yahoo Group, a blog or two, and a few posts at RPG net to see what the official word on the game and it’s features were. A lot of things have changed since 06 and it can be hard to keep track of the current word. I am not complianing, just too hooked on the idea of playing (and getting ready too) for my own good already... :)
-
Awesome, thanx for the info about the rpg. I've never played before, but I certainly want to try, considering it's a dresden files based one.
-
well i cant wait for this game to drop, probably the only game ill keep a constant vigilance for. the fact that its a rpg makes it all the better, longer game time and more content versus turn based and platformers. all i can say and hope for is that for this rpg i hope they dont pull some Final Fantasy stuff and make the battle system turn based. i absolutely hate turn based fighting, so pointless. but whats this ink and paper thing i read about? never heard that phrase before, but i digress.
-
Do we have a release date for the game? I'm relatively new to this site and having trouble reading through everything.
-
Kuvah and MerriSedai Welcome to the Site.
Last I heard, we had already passed the end of the "Alpha Testing" period, and they were supposed to be doing "Beta Testing" soon.
Wish I had more to offer - sorry.
By the way - if you have not had the chance yet, go say "Hello" in the Introduction Thread in MacAnally's
http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,8655.0.html
-
Actually they're doing the second round of Alpha Testing right now. First was the Bleeding Alpha, now is the Burning Alpha. But unfortunately, still no release date. :( It'll show up eventually though I'm sure.
-
I was getting ready to start another round of Champions Pen and Paper with my group, and we were all talking about how great a Dresden-verse RPG would be the greatest thing ever.
I can't believe this. It's so awesome.
(I'm sorry I didn't post my hello thread in the McAnally's Thread. I am a total idiot.)
-
See ... it's working! More recruits to the RPG world.
New recruits are always a welcome sight.
-
Not to be one of those guys who asks every five minutes if the car is to disneyland yet, but does anyone know where they're at with the game?
-
Still in the Burning Alpha I believe. Although that may have just finished.
-
Ah very good then. Maybe we can get a few more glimpses at the game through playtest reports? I want to play this game and get my friends hooked on Dresden so much!
*drools madly*
-
http://community.livejournal.com/dresdenfilesrpg/
A bunch of playtesters post on there.
-
Does anyone have any idea if there will be additional groups added to test the game? I applied quite some time ago, and I wasn't sure if they were just recycling players from the Bleeding and Burning Alphas or if they'd be privvy to taking on new testers.
I only ask, because I have six people waiting on the wings to play. What type of character creation will there be? Does it give you the option of creating...
- Members of the Vampire Courts (red, white, black)
- the 4 types of werewolves?
- changelings
- the sidhe
- wizards
- humans
Are there plans for additional books? A sample city/story?
-
The sample city is Baltimore, I believe. There's no word on additional books (it's a tad early to be worrying about that anyway ;) ), and as for the character types . . .
This list is a little light on the faeriekind, but that's mainly because this is the list of "definitely-yes" player character types, and the faeries live on the "maybe-yes" list:
Pure Mortal
Champion of God
Changeling
Emissary of Power
Focused Practitioner
Knight of a Faerie Court (* Might be a maybe, depending on what all's entailed here)
Lycanthrope
Minor Talent
Red Court Infected
Sorcerer
True Believer
Were-Form
White Court Vampire
White Court Virgin
Wizard

We're not "just recycling players", but we're also not rushing to the beta phase. Now that the alphas are wrapping up, we need to eliminate external distractions for a while, batten down the hatches, and focus inward on doing the remaining work if we're going to get this thing finished.
Also keep in mind as always that we've gotten over 800 applications (possibly more) for playtesting. That makes each individual application a very small percentage of the overall pool, so selection's going to be rough indeed.
We're still planning on doing some sort of thank-you to everyone who applied, whether we make use of them or not, once we're (frankly) much further down the line.

This game is taking a long, long time for you guys to develop. As a result, I bet it's going to be fantastic. Keep up the slow, steady work!

Hey, I know it.
If anything what I'll MOST need is help when we get close to launch -- as a tiny company we are very dependent on word of mouth, so advocates from the community around the globe would be a HUGE help.

Nope. Not gonna give one either, for reasons outlined in the 'Schedule' link on www.dresdenfilesrpg.com

Can you give an estimate on what percentage of the book is done?
-
Can you give an estimate on what percentage of the book is done?
A really rough estimate? Probably in the 50-80% range. It's hard to say, though, because a lot of that range is a range because there's some stuff that's *mostly* done but still needs to go some more rounds.
-

Definitely a REALLY rough estimate. Is there a "hopeful" time-frame that we can beg for (say, fall 09)? Or are you keeping it totally under wraps until we can start pre-ordering?
Oh, and will we be able to get PDFs along with our hard copies? ('Cause I want to buy two hard copies and a PDF for quick-reference.)

I AM NOT GIVING OUT A DATE REPEAT I AM NOT GIVING OUT A DATE if I give out a date I will be a lying liar and we will miss it. THAT IS THE CURSE.
Print+PDF bundles will definitely exist.

I am sensing a desire in you to give out a date. (Waves hand, Jedi-style) You want to tell us the release date. ;)

I am glad you are unwilling to give a release date....I know firsthand about the curse...as for word of mouth I will be glad to let everyone I know about the game/book! I can hardly wait myself but I know the wait will be worth it.
-
Are we theere yet? :-[Are we theere yet? :-\ are we theere yet? :'(
I know I have to wait...but my dice hand is sooooo ichty! ;D
-
I ALREADY know about 5 or 6 Dresden fans just waiting for me to buy!
Any chance there will be a preview at Origins 2009?
-
I run a semi-annual local gaming get together in a store in my area (The Owner of the shop asked me to specifically not mention his Store or the local it is in. I am respecting his wishes. I will simply say I heard his reasons and understand completely.) either way, I get in contact with about a hundred gamers and I get the ability to advertise before the 10 games are started. I am completely willing to use this to publicize your game. (it has a better chance of being done in time than my D20 Homebrew. *laughs*) Either way. If that's cool with you guys I would need something to hand out. maybe a image. synopsis. whatever...I don't care too much.

So, anyone have any idea when this sucker is coming out?

That was fantastic, Iago. Who actually wrote that? Group effort?
I've been exposed to Rob's style elsewhere and I think I can see his fingerprints on it, but there's others involved I don't know of, so I can't be sure. In any case, hats off to you all for the writing, the honesty, and balls to put it all out and say "This is the way it is."
-
That was fantastic, Iago. Who actually wrote that? Group effort?
Actually, I wrote all of it. But as a group, we've had a lot of practice.
-
"Keep at it, mate!
Those goblins will all fall, eventually!!"
-
And when that happens, the awesomeness and the fun to be had by all will know no limits!
-
I cant wait for the RPG, though I haven't played in 8 years. When I discovered the book series it rekindled the old creative spirit (my career and family have replaced gaming nights, not to mention we have all moved away from each other). Im glad the developers are choosing to do it right then having a disappointing product. From a business sense they are staking their name on the rpg. Its going to go to a wider audience from the popularity of the books.
My question is this, is the fate system similar to silver age sentinels in character creation? From reading though the forum and evil hat it has the same kinda "feel" build the character the way you want it.
-

SAS shares SOME points of similarity when it comes to things like powers and such, but the real touchpoint for character creation is our other game, Spirit of the Century.
-
It seems like a awesome idea, But it's just going to be another system i have to learn. D20 d6 d10 a d12 system and no a system that's just cluster bombed to me.
-
You're welcome to use the setting material and adapt it however you see fit. But please, let's avoid making this a thread about bitching about systems. 99% of the Internet is for that (and is about that, honestly); let's make this place the 1%.
-
I though 99% of the internet was for was pr0n. ;D
Setting can be adapted to any system - some better than others. If you use the system included in the game, you are saving yourself a lot of work and headaches as a GM, but it's your game, do what you want.
I once ran a Cuthulupunk-voodoo-fantasy-supers-blackops-vampire-wuxia-mecha-star wars crossover in GRUPS. It was like a cross between shadowrun and rifts, and was a huge headache to run. We had fun though :)
-
I though 99% of the internet was for was pr0n. ;D
Internet:
porn 50%
bitching 49%
everything else 1%
-
I would supose it's a lil more like
10% porn
60% bitching
29.8% emo live journals
.2% every thing else

I made a pretty good frame for running a dresden game in White Wolf's Scion system. Never did get a group to play it though, thank to the tragic end of college and this stupid Real world everyone keeps going on about.
-
Hi there! I'm brand new to all this, i've never played an RPG in my life before, not even Dungeons and Dragons!
I'm guessing that the Harry RPG is a game for numerous players "In House" as opposed to one where you can play over the internet, or am i wrong in guessing that?
If its not meant to be able to be played over the net (and i don't mean Warcraft style, i mean just discussing and taking on roles), does anyone know of an online Dresden RPG? It has to be online cause none of my buddies are into this kind of thing!
Thanks!
-
Check out the Play by Post sub-forum for a lot of examples of playing online. You can probably also find a group to play with there.

thanks very much! i really appreciate it. I just didn't wanna spend money on the books if i couldn't actually play it!

So far I am loving the game. I convinced my regular gaming group to buy a few copies and we swapped it out for our regular game. Everyone seems very positive on the system so far.
Here is the question. Has there been any speculation as to future supplements, guidebooks, or scenario ideas? While I realize it is quite early, I have to admit I am greedy for more.

Nothing public. We are still discussing stuff internally and with Jim.
-
Sigh. I guess I will have to use the forum to get my fix in the meantime. Thanks for the quick answer. :)
-
They are talking to Jim and talking internally means sales are good and it might be worth both their times to go forward with more. Jim of course wants to protect his property and not reveal all his secrets which is why we love his books.
