DFRPG / Re: Noob Questions on Red Court Infected
« on: February 23, 2016, 12:22:09 PM »
I second Haru. No Claws/Fangs Power = no weapon bonus. That doesn't mean he doesn't have any fangs, just not the Fangs with capital F :-) Btw. we have a werewolf without Claws in our game and we do it this way, too. Just no weapon bonus, that's it.
And yes, compelling the High Concept is the way you bring the RCI's hunger into the game. It's limiting the character's choices, complicating their life and it's worth a Fate Point, of course.

Edit: Too late, I see :-)

Again, Taran, this is a very fine answer. Now I see your point of view regarding the NPCs and I wholly agree.

I'm not sure what you mean, though … If you are saying that the werewolf should take a consequence for each point of refresh she recovers, then I'd say yes but I'd say it would have to be a single feeding.  I wouldn't allow him to take a mild and immediately recover it.  That is boring.

That's what I had in my mind. I was looking for some kind of a system of handling the werewolf's stress/consequences dealt by feeding his blood to her. The straight one-one system felt natural but boring, especially with his Inhuman Recovery. Your broadening my scope is very helpful. I felt that the story of her/his/their survival should be challenging and the ways proposed by you seem promising.

But only if it happens while cheesy 80's music is playing.
Heh :-) But again, the richness of ideas is much appreciated here. I probably won't go the way of single rolls or extended conflicts as the player prefers solving the situation in-game rather than on the meta-level of an extended conflict and then narrating the story. But it's still a good reminder that we can sometimes do the things in different ways, too.

All in all, thank you!

First of all, I must say I really like the complexity of your answers and your approach, Taran. I largely agree that it's the story of the PCs, not of the NPCs (I will address that later in my post again). On the other hand I know the player and I know the character he's playing and I want to prepare myself for at least some of the more probable solutions he might come up with. The story is always leaning towards some direction, formed (at least partly) by the general environment the characters are in. In this case I intend to "make" the PC and the NPC cooperate in a generally hostile environment of unstable portals leading to God knows where. This could lead to some very interesting tension in their dynamically changing love-hate relationship of mutual addiction and dependence. Or at least that's what I'm offering. If the player decides against that the story will go a different way, that's clear.

But if the story goes "my" direction I'll need to manage the vampire's Hunger somehow. In a mostly real-seeming story progress, if you understand me. What I think the werewolf will do is that he will at some point feed her his own blood. His situation in this respect is a little bit easier for him because he possesses the Inhuman Recovery ability. So, he can do it in a not-very-harming way if he somehow manages to make the vampire feed slowly. Which will pose a challenge, of course :-) Btw., what do you think about the "one consequence inflicted = one point of lost abilities regained" ratio? Too boring/simple?

And finally a general note on the role of NPCs. As I said I largely agree with your point that it's the PCs' story. On the other hand, though, a good and important NPC should be radiating some infuence, forming the general background and, partly, even the story itself. That's why I care for the NPCs because they are partners (both in the positive and the negative way) to the PCs in shaping the overall story. I believe that both of us, in fact, share very similar points of view. I just wanted to explain myself a little bit.

DFRPG / Regaining lost abilities due to Hunger Stress
« on: February 16, 2016, 09:18:03 AM »
Has anyone worked with this past the "one point = one scene (killing = all points in one scene)" system? Currently I have the following situation on my hands (as a GM, that is): A PC werewolf is having a "twilight-esque" :-) affair with a Red Court Vampire NPC. Don't ask me much more. Some politics is involved and while the RCV managed to addict the werewolf to her venom she, having already been a junkie, developed an addiction to the werewolf blood herself. God knows where this will lead :-) Last session they managed to snatch some cocaine from the local organised crime but they also went in over their heads with a ghoul guarding the inside of the van. The vampire got some serious bashing and currently has all the consequences (except extreme) filled and she also failed her Discipline roll regarding Hunger stress and lost 4 points of her abilities. Now, the werewolf grabbed the drugs and the unconscious vamp and hid in the tunnels under the Petřín hill. For next session I'm planning on letting them get lost in the tunnels, have some Nevernever encounters and witness something very important for future development. As you can see, skipping scenes is not an option. I need to count her feeding in-game, not on the meta level. The ratio "one consequence inflicted = one point of lost abilities regained" came to my head but if anyone had another idea it would be helpful. I suppose that the werewolf will have to feed her his blood (probably after my compelling her and a bit of fighting) if he wants her going and being helpful. Thank you!

Thanks, Taran. You're right. It probably isn't a big deal either way.

Thank you, Taran.

If this is how your GM runs it, then I'd allow the grappler to tag the aspect immediately.

I'm the GM and I'm considering options for both the PCs and the NPCs. I'm not quite sure whether the immediate tag wouldn't somehow damage the balance. On the other hand, maintaing a grapple might be considered to be easier than establishing it so that immediate tag would make some sense. The problem is that the DFRPG rules aren't completely bug-free so this interperation might be a glitch, with something like "in the subsequent exchange" omitted.

DFRPG / A quick question regarding Grapple
« on: February 12, 2016, 09:38:35 AM »
Gentlemen, I have a question regarding the grappling rules. As a supplemental action the grappler is allowed to make an unopposed manoeuvre and place a temporary 1-shift aspect on his opponent. Is it possible to tag this aspect in the same round for maintaining the grapple? According to RAW it seems to me that it is possible – the supplemental action goes first. On the other hand this makes the "not doing anything, concentrating on the grapple" option useless. If the grappler doesn't use the supplemetal action he gets +0 for maintaining the grapple. If he does the supplemental action manoeuvre, he gets -1 on the subsequent roll but also a +2 for tagging the aspect, which makes a +1 at the end. Thank you for your thoughts.

A currently broke Red Court vampire: "F*ck this! I'm supposed to be the horror of the night! Not to be dragging myself through the city on a tram!"

Thank you for your reactions so far. I like your idea, moireth. I was somehow stuck with tags and invokes but this is elegant, indeed. Maybe compels really do solve everything :-)

Taran, your ideas are also very helpful. There are more ways around as I can see. An intelligent and cautious vampire who's not afraid of using the blessings of modern technology can achieve quite a lot :-)

DFRPG / Some Red Court Ideas
« on: January 12, 2016, 02:03:38 PM »
Before Christmas, some South American "Indians" usually come to Prague to perform music and earn some money. It occurred to me that in fact they could be RCVs visiting, maybe checking on the local situation, hunting a little and such. Than I came across a group who used the CO2 smoke effects (I don't really know how you call this in English) and it came to my mind that the vampires could be dispersing their saliva that way into the audience to influence them and make them to an easy prey. The next logical step was – air-condition! A clever vampire who runs a business or generaly owns a building could be dispersing their saliva in low concentration through the air-condition to exercise slight but constant influence over anything and anybody in their environment.

How would you treat such a situation? A scene aspect that the vampire can tag once in every scene, for example? It opens other possibilities, of course, such as someone (the PCs maybe) hacking such a device and jamming its effects and so on. Someone may find these ideas useful in their game…

(Btw., I haven't read JB's books; there might be something similar in them, I don't know.)

Thank you, Sanctaphrax. I'll give it a look. I'm not acquainted with these additional web materials so some directing is always appreciated.

DFRPG / Ferat the Vampire Car - Spirit of Bloodlust
« on: November 22, 2015, 10:13:17 PM »
Guys, I've been trying to design a spiritual entity possessing cars, based on the Czechoslovak 1982 film Ferat Vampire. The concept ist on Toonstore but, to be frank, I'm not satisfied with it. How would you design such an entity? I'm considering to give it at least some Toughness power when in the transient spirit form but what could be, for instance, the Catch? Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Ferat (the true name of the entity is unknown) is a spirit of bloodlust, not dissimilar to what the Red Court vampires bond to their souls and bodies. The chief difference is: 1) Ferat doesn't seem to have any interest in propagating or any other agenda than feeding and eventually killing, and 2) Ferat is only able to bond with a car. Once bonded, it either sucks the blood of the driver or urges the driver to crash the car, wrecking it and creating as much carnage as possible. Only then is the spirit able to possess another car. This is also the only time when Ferat can be fought directly.

Frankly speaking, I don't care much what you change or not. He's an NPC in our universe and nothing will change for us if you use the concept or name or whatever. You can use any of my dramatis personae or story setting ideas (both in my signature) as a source of inspiration. As for your other question: In our version of the universe he became Warden sometimes between 1990 and 1992. I don't know whether that is pre-Dead Beat or not as I haven't read the books :-) I just like DFRPG and loosely model my Prague setting on it. There might even be no Harry in our version of the universe. Speaking about an apprentice I could imagine Reon having a fanclub of young inexperienced girls/women fascinated with him. Some of them might even possess some arcane talent. In our universe he would certainly abuse this fact in some way as he is an egocentric asshole, a Lawbreaker and with the Lecherous aspect. But again, use or change whatever fits your needs.
