Title: NaNoWriMo 2010
Post by: jeno on October 04, 2010, 10:09:37 PM
National Novel Writing Month is almost upon us!

So who's doing it this year? I'm using October to plan everything out. Might even bump my word count goal up to 100k. Hey, it could happen.

For NANOWRIMO do you have to start in November?
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo 2010
Post by: jeno on October 04, 2010, 10:38:08 PM
The only rule for NaNo is that you have to write 50,000 words in the month of November.

Most people take this to mean 'start a new project on November 1st and finish it at 50k words on November 30th.'

Personally, I'm working through October (and December and January...), but I'm really focusing on getting words out in the November rush. There are a lot of writing groups that form in November to host sprints and brainstorming sessions for NaNo that can be very helpful, too.

I'm planning on doing it again this year--have my outline about 50% complete.

Oh okay, then in that case I'm on board. I think that comes out to 1667 words per day.

Not too incredibly hard.

or ~2300 if you're like me and can't work on weekends.

Technically, the goal is to write a 50,000 word novel in November, not just 50,000 words of anything.  To truly qualify, you have to start writing on November 1 and stop on November 31 and have a complete novel.  You shouldn't, like, start writing now and then just add 50,000 words to the project in November.

Which is a bummer 'cause I'm writing Book 2 now and I'm about 20k in.  So I can't use it for NaNo.  My plan is to get as much of the rough draft of Book 2 done in October as I can, and then use NaNo to work on a completely different project.  Then in December I can go back to Book 2 with a clear head and edit the rough.

Not that it's going that well right now, but... hey, that's the plan.

PSSSST Kali...November is 30 days.

Although your post makes perfect sense and makes me a little sad, because I don't think I can write a fifty thousand word novel.

Ok, in my defense, I never could remember that stupid little song.

And you can.  Thousands of people do it every year.  Most of them suck.  Mine sucked.  But it was a complete story, with a beginning, a middle, and an end.  And it was just over 50,000 words.  1,667 words a day for 30 days, and presto!  50,000 words.

Not necessarily.

NaNoWriMo is what you make of it. The main purpose of NaNo is to get words out, to just write and write and write with no breaks for editing. As long as what you get out is new material, I see no problem with bending the official rules a little.

(not to mention that 50k isn't near enough to be considered a novel. a novella, maybe. xD something to keep in mind.)

My problem is that it normally takes longer, so I don't think I can finish it in a month. And have it be good. I'd like it to be good.

OT but I like your site Kali.

From the NaNo website:

Quote
Because of the limited writing window, the ONLY thing that matters in NaNoWriMo is output. It's all about quantity, not quality. The kamikaze approach forces you to lower your expectations, take risks, and write on the fly.

Make no mistake: You will be writing a lot of crap. And that's a good thing. By forcing yourself to write so intensely, you are giving yourself permission to make mistakes. To forgo the endless tweaking and editing and just create. To build without tearing down.
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo 2010
Post by: Kali on October 04, 2010, 11:18:04 PM
Bah, there are plenty of novels that are right around 50k words.  That's the reason why Chris Baty picked 50k as the goalpoint; he grabbed a skinny novel off his bookshelf, checked the pagecount, did some math, and said "So, ok, 50kish.  Works for me!"  Novels like "Flowers for Algernon", "The Great Gatsby", and "Brave New World" clock in right around 50k so it totally counts.

And, if you look at the rules for NaNo, it's to start a novel on November 1 and finish it the last day of November (ahem).  Now, there's no one monitoring you. You can, if you want, "cheat" to your heart's content.  There's absolutely nothing stopping me from writing 50k words in Book 2 and adding it to what I've got, then at the end of the month claiming my winner's bar.  But them's not the rules and so I won't 'cause that's just me.

My problem is that it normally takes longer, so I don't think I can finish it in a month. And have it be good. I'd like it to be good.

OT but I like your site Kali.

The fun of NaNo is freeing yourself from the need to write something good. ;D  I had editing disease something *fierce* before NaNo.  I never finished anything truly long because I kept editing, wanting every sentence, every scene to be just right before I'd go on to the next.  With the result that I almost never finished anything of any length.  Just learning how to turn off my inner editor and get the words down was such a great experience, it was worth donating even though I was nearly broke last year.

And thanks!  Having a site at all, with actual details about myself, was harder than I thought.  I'm an immensely private person, almost paranoid about it.  But I have to get over that if I want to have any kind of a writing career at all, so... It's out there.  For what it's worth, it's there.  I freak a little every time I see the counter go up, honestly, but that's what Valium is for, right?

I don't have editors disease, or world builders disease, I'm fairly disease free.

I think I'm going to go for my locked room mystery if them's the rules. Besides I want my shiny new Scrivener 50% off. Is it against the rules to do prep work before 11/1?
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo 2010
Post by: Kali on October 04, 2010, 11:35:46 PM
Sure, they're very short novels, but they are novels.  Middle Grade novels run long at 40k (though there are exceptions). Young Adult novels are long at 80k, 50k is just about right (again, there are exceptions).  "Hitchhiker's Guide" is around 50k, though I'd guess you'd argue that's an old book too. Ditto for Anne McCaffery's "Harper's Hall" trilogy.

Heck, Google it. ;)  Most sources agree that a 'novella' is somewhere around 20-40k, and a novel is longer than that.

Nope, do all the prep work you like!  The only thing you 'can't' do, according to the rules, is write any prose that you use in November.
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo 2010
Post by: jeno on October 04, 2010, 11:37:21 PM
*shrug* I don't think so. Plenty of people I know outline before November.

Honestly, do what works for you. If you're worried about the spirit of the Challenge, then follow the rules to a T. If you want to focus more on what you're churning out, do a kind of modified-NaNo.

But whatever you do, DON'T EDIT IN NOVEMBER. It is the one unforgivable sin.  ;)

omg, that Scrivener offer has me drooling. I'm dl-ing the beta when it comes out, but I'm not sure if I'll use it for NaNo. Too many distractions.  :D
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo 2010
Post by: Kali on October 04, 2010, 11:38:37 PM
i no rite?!

Seriously, if it weren't for that Scrivner offer, I'd blow off NaNo this year and just focus on Book 2.  But I'm poor, and 50% off for writing 50k words in a month?  I'm there.

Scrivener for Windows will have some similar properties as 2.0 for Mac.  I forget exactly what without going back and reading the blog post about 2.0 and the announcement of the Windows version.  But it'll be sort of a 1.5 that Mac never got.

I'm thinking about it, but at the same time I'm finally in the home stretch with my main project, and it has taken me a while. I'm pretty concerned about not finishing it up before moving on to something else. If I can somehow finish the first draft by Nov, I'll do it. :)

Well I'm going to give it the college try this year. Just got WriteItNow, and looking at Scrivener's Demo when it comes out in time for NaNoWriMo...

So we'll see...not sure what I'm going to write yet, most likely going to be some flavour of Urban Fantasy, though may just give traditional fantasy a go...wait an see I suppose what mood strikes me when the time comes :)

I'm still not sure what I'm going to do.  I'll either cheat and work on Book 2, work on a project I've had in mind for awhile now but never quite managed to get off the ground, or work on a more traditional fantasy story.  I probably won't decide until November 1 when I sit down and start typing. ;)

I did NaNo during 2006,2007, and 2008.
I loved it!
It was fun.
I even finished one year!

But I am NOT doing it again. I already have four WIP that I need to finish.

52,000 words into Book Six
28,000 words into Book Seven
14,000 words into Book Eight
 8,600  words into Book Nine

I suppose I could NaNo the rest of book seven ... heh

So I'm joining again this year with an actual plot + outline + character sheets + whatever else I can think of. I'll be ready this time! woohoo!

If you want to start beefing up you wordcount, I'd suggest WriteOrDie or a comm that hosts writing sprints. I know the NaNoWriMo community on LJ hosts sprints through out the day on AIM.  ;D

ANOTHER REASON TO FINISH YOUR NANOWRIMO BOOK -- A FREE COPY.

A few people asked if NaNoWriMo would be arranging for you to get a bound copy of your NaNoWriMo novel this year.  The answer is...YES!

The Office of Letters and Light has collaborated with a company called "Create Space."  Once you've "won" your NaNoWiMo goal, you can go to Create Space's website, upload your book, enter a title and choose a cover, and they will send you a free bound copy of your book.  The finished product looks like a real "trade" paperback (and will make a really awesome Christmas present for your mother).

Someone asked if this counted as a "first printing" of a book.  This person intends to submit their book to be published by a royalty-paying publisher, and wanted to make sure that, by ordering a copy, she was not violating the publisher's rule that the submitted book is new, unpublished work.  The answer is, no, until you are issued an "ISBN," the number that indicates your book has a copyright, this is considered a proof copy only.

So, what the heck!  Get a copy, and you can show it to your friends and say: "You know what I did in November? I WROTE A BOOK.  What about you?"

On the other hand, once you've set your free Create Space account, you'll have the option of selling copies of your book through an assortment of channels, including Amazon!

I'll send information about how you can sign up for this fun program closer to the end of the month.  In the meantime...

WRITE!  WRITE! WRITE!

I plan to get started today!  I'm behind, but I don't think I'll have much of a problem catching up.  For now, I'm busy running around everywhere with my sister, but this afternoon is set aside for Borders and laptop time.  The beginning's all plotted out so that'll make for some fast writing.

Kevin- hopefully you can use some of the emotion to give a 'realness' to your character and how they experience the situation.

fourth day, 13500+ words! woot!

on a side note, I was trying to get in some more words earlier. I was really sleepy, so I was just tapping and tapping and tapping until I fell asleep. after a while, I woke up, and looked at what I typed.

"This is our new management system. If anyone doesn't answer, at least we have r5, r5, and boba fett on our side because of the insessment."

I'm writing a mystery story set on fictional earth, fictional reality, fictional philippines. Someone please tell me what this means?!?!?!

Not officially doing NaNo, but using it to force myself to take account for my various writing projects:

Day 1 - 5.3k words on fanfiction aimed at drawing readership to website
Day 2 - 5.4k words on two author-notes files for Bystander, one on metaphysics of certain class of beings, other on limits and abilities of Lucretia herself, needed to be done
Day 3 - almost nothing done, aimed at Greenwater, erased most of it
Day 4 - 3.7k written on Greenwater, enough for one chapter, thinking of stretching some parts to make it into two chapters, however.
Day 5 - not started yet (my writing time is 12am to 5am)

Writing while asleep/zoned out is always fun to see what you end up writing.  I used to do that, though it hasn't happened in a while.  :D

I'm not done writing for the night but I broke 11K.  At this pace the website says I can finish before 11/23.  This is good.  Hubby has a birthday at the end of the month.

Another personal victory today:  wrote a fight scene.  A whole one.  All by myself :)  Feels good even though it's awkward and I will hate it next month, it's there.  It also means I have more confidence for the BIG fight to come.  woohoo!

We are doing Okay, my wife is also NaNoing, and we have a goal of finishing early due to LosCon in LA at the end of the month. So I really need to get in to the 2500-3000 range per day....

At least this year it looks like there is enough plot outline to keep the writing going with out a pause to plot along the way.

Kevin

Even so. Find whatever scene that it might lend itself to, and write that. Or write other stuff. You can always go back to your NaNo later. But seriously, use it. Even if it's just a journal entry pouring it all out. That could be helpful later on. I found myself going back to a 5yr old story to put my mind back into the mindset I needed for part of my novel because the emotion I was trying to recall was so far removed that I was having trouble writing it with the impact I wanted.

I didn't!  I'm nowhere near it, in fact.  But with a 5k day yesterday, and a 2600 day today, I think I can catch up.  According to the NaNo stats page, at my current rate I'll finish on January 3rd.  I need to write 2253 words a day to finish on time.  Piece of cake, sez I!  I'm sitting at just under 10k.

Last year, I wrote 10k on the very first day.

My life is really in a very different place than it was last year...

Right now I am at 42140, about mid way through the second MC arc. After a whole arc demonizing the bad guys, I am now returning the favor for the people of the first story arc. I worry that I won’t have any credible bad guys. It seems to be a great method for consistency, as each story will be written from the POV of the central figure of that side. I just wonder how it is going to work once the arcs are braided together.

Kevin

A minor character is named Randy Andy who owns a supernatural type strip club. He was uh..."auditioning" a female lycan (wolfman style not traditional werewolf) and a female vampire. Throw in some ropes and a fake ahem and a gag and you begin to get the picture.

Well it's not as important for this novel as it will be for the rest of the series, in which they will eventually bring down the slavery ring responsible for supplying him with "talent"

Besides, I have the whole of SF's Tenderloin, I may as well make the location extra tenderloiny

It's the nickname of an English character who's euphemizing for just that. Mostly it boils down to a promise I made at the time for comedy that I then had to fulfill on camera.

I'm a "lose" this year.  Not that upset about it; given what's been going on in my life, just walking around is one in the "win" column as far as I'm concerned. ;D  I've been writing the "OMG apocalypse!" part of my post-apocalyptic novel, even though my original intent was to write a story set 10 years later.  Still, I think I'll keep writing this.  It won't be what I submit, I don't think (assuming I ever do), but it's good to know.  I kind of like knowing what happened and exactly how, rather than just having this vague "Oh, this bunch of stuff happened" notion.

Okay,
I have finally cut the three main story arcs together. Track three needs a lot added, that is the story from the big read headed farm boy POV, because it is so tightly woven with track one (the runt dragon in exile), it needed to be cut in to see where add-ons were needed.

Tracks four and four A have yet to be plotted, but need to exist to explain why a war happened. (Conspiring self interest on the parts of the "big money" folks in both kingdoms.)

Hacking away,
Kevin

Grin,

I am not yet up to fifty parallel plot lines.... The series arc is still fairly open ended, but this first novel is to give me a place where I can write sorcery and six guns stuff. Steam engines and dragons, maybe even hot air balloons with organic burners.

Is anyone planning to take advantage of the offer from Create Space?  Also, have you used this service in the past and if so, what is it like?  I'm definitely planning to get the single copy of my manuscript, and am also considering making it available for sale as an e-book/trade paperback, but I need to investigate more thoroughly first.
My principal concern is that using a self-publishing service for this one manuscript might scuttle any chances I have of submitting another, unrelated novel through more traditional publishing channels.  (FYI, I have no illusions that I would make a fortune doing this, or even get a lot of exposure, but I figure that if I can get the occasional price of a cup of coffee out of the thing, than what the hell?) Thoughts?
