Site Suggestions & Support / Where did the thread on the Laws of Magic go?
« on: November 21, 2011, 11:31:30 AM »
We used to have a thread that compiled all the Laws of Magic, it was stickied even.  Now when I go to look for it, I can't find it in any of the FAQ forums, or the Dresden specific ones.

Did it get unstickied & get bumped?

Found it.  It got renamed as a thread about the White Council, where the subject used to mention the laws of magic.  Maybe it could be changed to The White Council: And the Laws of Magic?

05)  He was known to be at a houseboat not registered to him, where enough blood was found to indicate a murder took place.  But not his, seeing as he's alive.
Couldn't he just give a sample of his blood to prove that all the blood was his?

Personally, I would assume the immediate reaction is that Harry faked his own death.  And even showing off the scars of the entry & exit points, won't likely sway that opinion.

I don't think he'll be accused of murder for this, but I would think faking you own death is frowned upon by the police.  Plus, he likely owes back taxes.  Since he's been gone a year.

Site Suggestions & Support / Re: Why use TT to describe Touchy Topics?

Don't know what I did wrong, but I fixed the link.  It's for the Dresden's Duster thread, starting on page 4, when the talk switches to tattooing pigs.  In my read, the user is not being realistic, and potentially fishing for a reaction like that of Amy, but I could be wrong.

At any rate, two newish users get fixated with the subject, AcornAmy is bothered by it & everyone gets warned by shecky.  It starts again a few posts later, I make a post that indicates this was a touchy topic & relate where I think the 'humor' comes from.  shecky makes a 2nd warning & people seem surprised by his Mod status.

Hence why I wrote this post.  The users might have not understood what TT was, not to totally excuse their divergent chatter, but a warning that is not understood might be the reason the discussion continued.

This is an acronym rich environment, as is most of the internet.  Heaven knows it can all get confusing for the new user.

Myself, I'm not confused.  But I could see where a new user might be.  Point of me raising this thread.

TT isn't the same thing as LOL, in that it's actually is part of the rules.  However, at the time I posted this, TT isn't actually mentioned in the rules (at least when I started this thread it wasn't).  Yes, its called Touchy Topics, but that isn't going to make a leap to TT in most minds.

It might help to see what prompted this.  In this thread things derailed so much that Shecky warned about TT twice.  However, given the low post counts of some of the users, it wouldn't should me to learn that a few didn't know what was being talked about.

(Heck, some were surprised to learn that Shecky was a Moderator, so that didn't help.  While Bartender & Warden are nifty titles, I don't suppose you could bold italic them, or something.  Otherwise, they look like a regular user description.)

Site Suggestions & Support / Why use TT to describe Touchy Topics?
« on: October 09, 2011, 01:19:00 PM »
I hate to say it, but the shorthand of Touchy Topics to TT, kinda defeats the purpose.  It took me nearly a year to figure out what TT means, it isn't well defined in the rules (IE TT = Touchy Topic, not what the words mean) & I've seen Mods use TT to warn people off a subject.

To me, it seems like a shorthand that defeats the point.  TT is used to dissaude a person from a topic, but it isn't immediately clear that TT = Touchy Topic.  At least, I think the forum policy page should include a line that states TT = Touchy Topic.  Also the Mods might want to reconsider the habit of using TT.  When the board had a TT forum, the shorthand might have been more apparent to everyone, but right now I think using TT only confuse some & gets readily ignored by others.

Its akin to me saying TSNK & expecting you to think Thou Shall Not Kill.  Like I said, it muddles an issue that's already problematic.

Odd thought, but are ther any examples of Harry getting odd treatment from animals, while he had Lashiel's shadow?  Or the Denarians themselves?

Really a stretch, that I don't give credence myself, but could Marci have Lashiel's coin?  People are dead certain that WOJ is that Lash & Lashiel are in the book.  I've only seen the Lash comment & am apt to believe he might have only meant Lash.

Still, I suppose it's worth looking into.  Maybe I'll add Small Favor & Death Masks to my reread lists.

Woof you're wrong?  And I'm right?

No not impossible that she's telling the truth, just a bit unlikely.  And generally, Butcher hasn't had much in the way of unlikely things happen.

I mean, to save up money like that & never get a decent place to live, seems odd.  To me it seems like dream job & just walking away seems like a big deal.  Yet Marci did it without any second thought?

Then 2 characters act like there might be something up with her?  Another red flag for me.

All that means for me, is that I intend to keep an eye on her.  She might be legit, bit I don't think so.  As for who's pulling her strings, no idea.

I didn't pick up on the Toto agression until reading this post but definitely remember thinking that Marci was bad news from Aftermath but never figured how.  What about her possibly working for the Fomor?  Any thoughts in that direction?

Well if she's been mind buggered, anything is possible.  Still, the way she tore into those things in Aftermath suggests otherwise.  There was no JLC, so no need to infiltrate it.  There was the Alphas, which would interest the Black Council, the Fomor & Marcone.

However, the Formor don't seem all that terribly complex in their strategies, so I doubt they put a plant in place.  Especially one that could find Molly, which seems to be a prime target of the Formor.

I've known dogs that jumping is a sign of affection (can't recall if there's anything that supports this from White Night, but plan to look at Toto's behavior from said book), given the later sentiment of snuggling next to Will, I assumed the reation carried over to both forms.

Since it's only indicated that Toto is growling at Marci specifically, I took that as a clue.

146
You may have a point, there's a lot here and in Aftermath to make you wonder. - but Abby did have to use her precog to stop Toto from going after Will after he got done with being growly at Marci.

I suggest you reread, as Toto is jumping at Will because he likes him, hence the latter scene where he snuggles next to Will's wolf form.  Will even smiles as Toto lunges at him, so from my reading Toto has no ill will towards Will, just Marci.

Which is a tad peculiar to me.

Toto growled both at Felicia the White Court vampire...  And Marci.  He (she?) could also detect Dresden's ghost.  And note that he wasn't aggressive to all werewolves, as Toto really seems to like Will.

Going back to Aftermath, there was something about Marci that Murphy just plain didn't like.  She put the poor girl through the ringer, with the threshold test & questioned her pretty thoroughly.

She also supposedly walked away from a sweet job at ILM, but lived out of the equivalent of a cardboard box.  To the extend that she's got a bit of cash saved up, living on the interest.  Then suddenly had a change of heart, and came to the conclusion that it was more important to be back with the other werewolves.

True, she did have a 'thing' with Andi, and after Kirby's death, that might be all there is to it.  Still, even if Andi & Marci were close, dropping everything is usually a big deal, and Marci didn't even seem to question her motives.

Murphy is pretty on the paranoid these days & Toto...  is kinda insane.  So, there might be nothing to this.

But what if there isn't?  What if we're being given hints that Marci is something of a double agent, and we're not noticing them?

The last time this was discussed, I suggested the possibility that she might be one of Marcone's people.  Aftermath, seen from a certain perspective, seems to suggest that Marcone has talents of his own (Gard talking about having their troubleshooters being taken, and the Formor only seemed interested in taking talents.).

Alternatively, she might have had her brains redecorated, maybe exactly like Luccio.

Or maybe something else.  Or maybe nothing.

One thing that bothers me more than most things, how did Marci know that Murphy was being fired?  It just barely happened, but in Aftermath, Marci clearly knew.  Maybe Will brought it up in his phone messages, but it seems like a kind of detail that he wouldn't share while his wife was missing.

Site Suggestions & Support / Did the rules change?
« on: August 09, 2011, 01:32:40 AM »
I could have sworn I once read a whole segment, how ppl should avoid making threads that get a bit too much into fan fiction type thinking, at least in the main threads.  In deference to Jim, because of the tricky issues of intellectual property.  Wanted to read & remind myself of what it said on the matter.

Found it, but it was something like the sixth Announcement thread & my eyes glazed over it.  Still, I remember the rules being a whole lot more consolidated.  Not as piece mail.

As for Mick's post of don'ts I really couldn't follow it.  Just really doesn't get straight to the point & gets too involved with trying to make everything fun.  To the extent the don'ts are a bit hard to make out.  Just my opinion of course.

Even still, it is a thought to try and consolidate the rules to a single post.  You could leave the other stuff, but only as expansions on the rules.

Calendar Event Discussion / Re: San Diego 2011 Comic Con

Jim was not at the Penguin Panel, it was just Anne, and another editor and marketing person from Penguin whose names I forget now. They did give away two copies of Ghost Story though.

No big loss then, since I already had gotten mine by that point.

Well I've no plans to share my horrid recording of the event.  Most of the time, you can't make out what's being said & it'd be a waste of effort trying to get it on-line.

Questions I could make out: (Paraphrased)
What's it like to work with a collaborator (between novel & comic)?
Views on electronic readers?
How do you translate written humor into visual (from novel to comic)?

The responses are mostly garbled & I'll have to listen a few times before I make any sense of it.  Plus, I might need to track down some audio of Jim Butcher talking, since it wasn't like they announced themselves before speaking.

All-in-all, the forum was very much on-topic & did not stray from the  panel discussion point of Books vs. Graphic Novels and Comics.

I missed out entirely on the Penguin books panel.  Mostly because I was about to pass out & wanted to catch the Batman Year 1, first showing.  Rather than the encore event.

Still, if somebody was there, maybe they could confirm or deny if Butcher was a surprise guest.  He wasn't on the docket, but Conan showed up at the animated Green Lantern panel, so I've no clue.

And aside from showing a animated clip of the Flaming C in action, I've no idea why Conan was at that particular panel.
