Cinder Spires Books / Re: ???????

I am excited about this new series. I love the idea of steam punk but, like many here, I have not found any that I thought was excellent. Most that I have read gets too heavy handed (for me) with their social commentary rather than concentrating on telling a good story first. I am really looking forward to seeing what Jim does. I would second Ulfgeir's recommendations as two of the better steam punk stories that I have read.

There's a guy who lives near me with two (so far), I think self published, steam punk novels. His name is Chris Braak, check out his web site (I'll link later) they're pretty good.

I haven't seen these. I will check them out. Thanks for the recommendation.

You wouldn't have.  I only know of him because our mothers were in a knitting group together.

Ulfgeir and Fox, Thank you for your recommendations.  I will get to those after I finish David Eddings' stuff (or at least those things related to The Belgariad universe).

Ummmm, you don't like fruit loops?  I"m not much of a cereal guy myself.  ;D

Can anyone give me some steampunk recommendations?  I have attempted to get into it before but each time that I do I find something horribly written (books, comics, tv) and then start to hate it again.  I am hoping that all of you can steer me in the right direction.

The only down side I see to this is that means it will be that much longer before DF #15 comes out!

That, and now I have two JB books to look forward too!

Well, thats really 13 when you add up the rest of the DF books as well as the 3 Cinder Spires books!

It might not be an issue, it wasn't back when Codex Alera was still going. But even if it is I'm still psyched for this series!

A grenade has one purpose - it go BOOM.  It makes no determination of the appropriate time to go boom.  It makes no determination of the appropriate place to go boom.  It makes no determination of the appropriate way to go boom.  A grenade just IS, but Mab IS, while making determinations.

Mab had to prove to Harry that his debt had been transferred to her, so she caused him to stab himself in the hand with a letter opener.  Then (SK) - Then regarding the punishment of Lloyd Slate (Changes) -Yes, I know he committed treason.  Yes, I know she needed to deter others from acting against her.  But...

I have a difficult time getting the warm and fuzzies for Mab, imaging she's regrowing a soul, or even amassing a big bunch of respect for her, when I consider many of the "appropriate" methods she employs to achieve her purpose.

You're kind of assuming that negative emotions or behavior have nothing to do with the soul then, only the good stuff?  What about hate?  I'd think that irrational hatred would be as surprising in Mab as affection.

Bob a reflection of Harry's personality? I know that's mentioned multiple times but it just doesn't seem true to me.  Where Bob is all sex fiend...interested in "boobs" and porn. Harry seems much too gentlemanly for that.

It's because he's a reflection of Harry at age 16.

I mixed feelings about your theories.  I love them because they're awesome, or have awesome implications- and tend to make a scary amount of sense.

But I if they're true there is a shit load of stuff going on in the Dresden Files that is flying way over my head, which is a little depressing.  But then again that's kind of exciting.

This is in the DF spoilers thread, but should probably be in the Bar or Story of Us, or something.

Since there is a gaming section now, should this video game topic be there, rather than Media Favorites:

Something about live action seems to make it the pinnacle of adaptation.

Most things seem to get adapted to live action and rarely vice versa.

For example anime usually comes first then a live action, not an anime based off a live action film.

Video games are sometimes adapted to film. In reverse games based off movies usually suck.

Animation also appeals to a much narrower crowd.

Video games that get made into movies tend to suck, and movie-based video games usually suck as well.  So far the crossing over rarely works in either direction (with some exceptions).

I think Highlander was adapted to an anime.  And I heard recently that Supernatural is getting an anime adaptation as well.
Plus there are tons of movies that have been adapted into American Cartoons (though not always clearly related to the original film):
Ghost Busters
Clerks
Godzilla
The Mummy
The Mighty Ducks
Robocop
Star Wars (a couple of 'em)
Teen Wolf
Police Academy
Beetlejuice
Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventures
The Wizard of Oz
Back to the Future
Dumb and Dumber
The Mask
Men in Black
King Kong

among others.

(sorry, once I got onto Wikipedia I got a little carried away.  :-\  ::) )

Nah, don't think of it like the place got burned down. Think of it as a giant Lego fort. The baby came along, tore it apart as only babies can do (i.e., faster than thought), shoved some pieces into its diaper and wandered on. It's rebuilt minus the diaper-tainted pieces. :D

Truly, I am in awe.  You're on my unofficial list of forum superheroes.
