I am actually shocked by the fact that England haven't crashed out of the World Cup yet.

So, here's the thing... I want to write a sword and sorcery/heroic fantasy story. The setting is kind of toward the end of the Viking era; there's an awareness that things are changing, in particularly war fighting (ie: the rise of the mounted warrior over Germanic modes of battle). My central character is this warrior modeled on an Anglo-Saxon/Scandinavian huskarl and a member of the Cult of the Bear, an elite order of warriors. His background is that, in one battle, he failed to save his king, and then failed to avenge his death. This leads to his exile, his search for redemption in his own eyes and a new place in the world.

Only, here's the thing.... his failure was not his fault, and his exile was unjust. So, I'm trying to figure out what exactly happened, even if it never gets revealed in the story itself.

So, how can such a man be perceived as failing so badly?

Help is appreciated.

BTW - "Arch" in this case would mean "ruler", from the Greek "arkhi". Think "monarch" and "anarchy".

There's a "Washington" in England, in Durham County. So we have the original "Washington, DC" ;D

You should see the flack that Stephen King has got for being honest with his characters and stories.

The PC crowd is essentially a bunch of pussies who want to control everyone's speech because they can't stand to hear anything that might disagree with, or might challenge them. It is, I think, a fusion of postmodernism and cultural Marxism being preached in universities and the inevitable result of the self-esteem movement of about 15, 20 years ago.

I've been hearing more and more stories of how it's infecting everything from tabletop RPGs and fiction publishing to journalism. Even the BBC is not immune. It's a cancer, it really is and it needs to dealt with, positively, before it does any more damage. Preferably with napalm.

I'm excited too! I hope to get a copy before EasterCon so Jim can sign "StormFront", "Furies of Calderon" and "Aeronaut's Windlass" for me. *bounces*

Priscellie - are you going to be at Eastercon next year and if so, could I get your cell phone number so I don't miss you again?
