DF Spoilers / Re: Are the Mothers immune to iron?
« on: June 14, 2017, 03:34:00 PM »
In SK she has several sets of teeth, but the metal one "was made out of some kind of silvery metal, shining like a sword", so it wasnt specified as Iron.  The shears are described as "rusty shears", though since it's not "rust-colored" it remains possible that the oxidation was non-specific; silver can be rusty but it's black, or green for copper-based alloys. Many of my old "rusty" tools appear to have black rust, rather than the stereotype red-rust of iron.

But a WOJ makes a strong implication that those shears are the mythic shears of Atropos, used to Cut the strings of Fate and end lives; I tend to question whether such a cosmically significant artifact would be made of common materials.
Not necessarily relevant to the story, but the post....

Red Rust

Hydrated oxide Fe2O3•H2O
 (high oxygen/water exposure)

Rust from Iron (III) oxides forms due to high oxygen and water exposure resulting in red rust.
•Red rust is the result of heavy exposure to air and moisture, combined many times with a contaminate (salt).
•This type of rust is most likely atmospheric because typically there are no signs of rust runs or streaks on the metal parts/equipment where the rust has formed.
•With red rust, there is uniform corrosion, most often from a very corrosive environment.

Yellow Rust

Iron oxide-hydroxide FeO(OH)H2O
 (high moisture)

Rust from Iron (III) oxides that is a very soluble iron oxide results in yellow rust.
•Yellow rust is distinguishable in recessed areas of the metal parts/equipment where the rust “runs and drips” (solvated rust).
•Yellow rust forms as a result of very high moisture content. It frequently found in settings where puddled/standing water has most likely been present.

Brown Rust

Oxide Fe2O3
 (high oxygen/low moisture)

Rust from Iron (III) oxides with high oxygen and low moisture results in brown rust.
•Brown rust is a drier rust than those mentioned above.
•It is most likely atmospheric – having formed as a result of water and oxygen in the atmosphere and presenting as a reddish-brown crust on the metal’s surface.
•Brown rust is sometimes localized rust which appears as non-uniform spots or only in certain areas rather than over the whole surface. It can be the result of a contaminate on the metal’s surface often originating from the manufacturing process.

Black Rust

Iron (II)oxide – Fe3O4
 (limited oxygen)

Rust from Iron (III) oxides with limited oxygen and low moisture results in black rust.
•Black rust can be visually identified as a thin, black film which is the result of oxidation in a low oxygen environment.
•Black rust has an appearance of almost a black stain. Most likely the areas exhibiting the black rust had something covering them, which prevented oxygen from reaching the surface.
•This type of rust is a more stable rust layer that does not propagate as rapidly as other rust forms.

DF Spoilers / Re: Maggie's School Friends at SMAGT

Given the fun he apparently had writing cats into Cinder Spires, I imagine he'd have Maggie teaming up with one in some fashion.
Seeing that Maggie's Dad already has Mister, I don't see another feline joining the cast, but I could be wrong.

I think it would be interesting to see a relative of Tera West...

If I remember correctly, there had been a WOJ or video or something that said there was a possible link between the DV and Alera, even a possible bloodline link between Harry and Tavi.  But that neither have links to the world of the Spires.
The problem with that would be the references to the Furies  of Olympus, that's made.

DF Spoilers / Re: What is a Saint? (Series Spoilers)
« on: June 08, 2017, 06:34:47 PM »
This could work, lets chase that.

When first introduced it was mentioned that "Michael didn't come down into the lab with me because the whole concept of using magic without the Almighty behind it didn't sit well with him, regardless of what we'd been through together".  I always thought this was an indication that Michael was entirely familiar with a farm of magic that /was/ more religious (as distinct from Harry views).  Now, when Michael prays to God it's always characterized as being the very simple, humble and direct sort of Prayer, just asking for help without a lot of ostentatious trappings.  And sometimes when he prays like that spectacular things happen. But other times he shouts Latin battle-cries and such to get the effects.  I submit that when he is using Latin phrases to channel power, he is casting a spell using magic words as mental insulation as per usual; it's likely at least as unconscious a process as the Alpha's transformation has supposedly become, but I think it's still Magic (Not sure if it's Life Energy or Faith Energy, or some blending).  By contrast I propose that those times he's prayed in the more simple way in English for a result we are seeing something qualitatively different, arguably the sort of "divine intervention" miracles that Saints are supposed to be able to request from on-high.    Thoughts?
Now here I would disagree with you, I don't think Michael ever "uses magic" or casts a spell.  There are times when his prayers are more dramatic and flashy and times when he's quiet and humble, but I think it's all based on his Faith that TWG is using him as a tool and the response, whatever shape that response comes in, is coming from on high.

DF Spoilers / Re: How Harry would do the Dark Hallow in Changes wag

I don't have Grave Peril with me at the moment and it's been a while since I've read it, didn't Harry absorb some of the power of the spirits killed by the Reds?  If I remember correctly, it was only temporary, but wouldn't that have been along the lines of a dark hallow?  Improperly done as it was only temporary, but still in that type of power assumption?

I don't think it could be done in changes.  Not only not by Harry, but not by anyone.  Per Bob in CD, the mortality of immortals on Halloween is what would have allowed it to work.
The importance of Halloween is that it's when Immortals become semi mortal, also good for when masks(mantles) are donned and/or removed.  The death of an Immortal wasn't required for the DH, but it was convenient to have the Hunt gathering and stirring up the warrior and hunter spirits.
On any other day, if Harry, or someone, were to perform the DH just consuming spirits and claiming their power could possibly work, but may not raise them to immortality.  During Changes, Harry would probably have been satisfied by just the accumulation of power, sufficient to smite the Reds and retrieve his daughter...

tying unrelated phenomenon together in a silly conspiracy that makes no practical sense.
do you have any idea how many theories on this board could be described this way?
including some of mine...

Jim.  The Archive isn't neutral with the Old Gods, just in other things.  When it comes to killing people who are connected to the Old Ones Ivy is without mercy.  The only crazy i know of is her mother, and that's because she took on the mantle at such a young age.  Her mother was murdered, and she got it too early.
You say her mother was murdered? Do you have a source for that?  As I recall, Ivy's mother was young(upper teens maybe twenty something?) and in love, when her mother was killed in a car crash, Ivy's mom flipped out over becoming the Archive and no longer having "her" life, that as soon as Ivy was born, she committed suicide.

Ahh, I just realized that you weren't talking about Ivy,but her mom... ok

DF Spoilers / Lara-Nemesis-Oblivion War
« on: May 23, 2017, 04:11:12 PM »
If this has been discussed elsewhere, please accept my apologies...

If Lara were to become nemfected, would that give Nemesis any advantage given her involvement in the Oblivion War?  Would Jim want to use that to bring that conflict into the main book series?

If I remember correctly that he doesn't plan to have Harry involved in the Oblivion War, is this a clue to show that Lara won't be nemfected in order to keep it out?

thoughts?

Cinder Spires Spoilers / Re: Olympia
« on: May 16, 2017, 11:22:51 PM »
Either is possible, but my thinking was that their expedition was to retrieve/harvest material that would just be found on the surface, probably near Albion.  I think that if there had been a crash, he wouldn't have had the chance to plan ahead and reserve the rooms and he probably would have taken whatever rooms were available at the base of the spire, not halfway up the side at Landing.

I'm also expecting him to play a part in "The Olympian Affair"

My only observation is that you state that he crashed his ship and thus walked across the surface to get to Albion.  It doesn't say anywhere that he crashed.  My read on this was that he and his crews were returning from a venture that took them out on the surface, any injuries that they'd suffered were from the hazards associated with travelling there.
If there is supporting evidence to support one theory over the other, I'd be willing to see it.

DF Spoilers / Re: If Hades shows up for Peace Talks in Chicago
« on: May 11, 2017, 06:27:52 PM »
I've long thought Harry needs to host a BBQ on DR.  Invite Hades and Spot to play with Mouse, invite Ivy to get to know (and Love) Maggie (and play with spot and mouse), invite McCoy to meet his granddaughter, invite Eldest Gruff for that beer Harry owes him, etc, etc, etc.
would you really invite Ivy back to the island where she was tortured and abused?

I'd put money on Nico being against the Circle, not with them.
I have to agree, and I think that it will force Nick and Harry to work together again, but that will be much harder after SG.
