hm, I mean an agency who's job is specifically to cover up other people's traces. like "cleaners".

@THETA: Yes, sure. I just want to know what is out there so that I don't copy something 100%. I mean, the thing is not set in the US and will be a comic, so I guess it's novel in a way, but I would like to know other takes on it.

Pretty common, actually.  One of the more common types of things, aside from supernaturals having their own police type agency.

Do you have any examples?

In some comics, they use different fonts. Might not work in novels though.

The only investigator type UF I read is Dresden Files. So I have no clue if this has been done before:

- there are hidden supernaturals
- the story is about a group of mundane and supernatural people who cover there traces

The Russian Night Watch has some elements of it, as the two factions police each other, but otherwise I haven't seen this yet.

You won't have to travel far this year because the conference is in Boulder on the CU
campus, August 14th through 17th.

4968 miles = far.  ;)

I thought the winning titles were also rather funny, but maybe I'm just from the wrong section on literature to judge it  ;D

I'm this close to making a joke about Germany, but I love the Germans too much.   :P

Now I'm curious...

You are correct...not sure I think of them as 'underground,' but yup!

They published the diary of a 15 year old prostitute, that's certainly not mainstream.
OK, maybe not underground in the home-made copies sense.

ideas for spells, spell schools, and how it's all going to start in the first place...oh, that gives me a good idea for a middle history of the world.......

Sounds a lot like D&D to me. Don't you just come up with spells when they are needed in the story?

Why can't the US have anything 1200 years old?  Besides the landscape.

Don't you have oldish pueblos? Besides, it ain't that special once you lived your whole life around old stuff. E.g. some Americans say that 100 year old houses are old. I live in a 100 year old appartment and it's a shoddy working class building which is impossible to heat, has no AC and has incredibly thin walls.

If you live abroad/ overseas, it gets more interesting. Finding old, used, out of print American novels is almost impossible where I live (the new stuff can be ordered in booskstores or via amazon of course). I know some Americans and Canadians who work in NGOs in the Balkans, and they only get stuff as electronic books via the internet (unless I sent them care packages with dead wood inside).

So how do you put a city in the dark in such a way that even wizards would be stumped?

I guess that depends on the "power level" of the wizards. If it's some D&D style magic, then it has to be more powerful magic (a god?). In other cases it could be a power from a different area that the normal magicians cannot counter (e.g. extradimensional, from a forgotten or forbidden magic school).

If you can spare 15 minutes of time, I'd recommend listening to this:

Episodes 14 and 15.

I write all ideas down and sort them when I am not making up new things. when enough ideas clog together for something I really think is worth it, I start writing.
up to now, I have only finished two short stories, which both didn't make it in competitions. I am dabbling with 4 stories now which came out of those idea lists. in fact, one story is based on a massive idea list, in which I created one small idea a day for three months (that way lies insanity, BTW).

I just found out that a German underground/ goth publisher will have a translation soon

(I don't know about the rules for links here - if you are at work or offended by pictures of breasts or something, you might not want to follow that link)

Good history you can pull in as well?

The city is 1200 years old, used to be its own kingdom, and has some famous people who were born there or lieved there. Also,
cannibals, bombed out churches, tunnels, and this:

muhahaha.
