Author Craft / Has this been done?!
« on: September 05, 2008, 03:10:26 PM »
The only investigator type UF I read is Dresden Files. So I have no clue if this has been done before:

- there are hidden supernaturals
- the story is about a group of mundane and supernatural people who cover there traces

The Russian Night Watch has some elements of it, as the two factions police each other, but otherwise I haven't seen this yet.

Author Craft / is this idea worth a try?

After re-watching Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere, I was again thinking of doing some urban fantasy story in my hometown. Now, our subway system neither has the history nor the cool names of the London one and I don't want to copy Gaiman's work, so I thought about a tourism trail through the inner city that we have.

So... there are something like 30 stops there - 30 fantasy enriched short stories about the places (note that some are rather weird in the first place) that are somewhat interconnected into a bigger story?

Funny thing is that I have recently applied for a part time job as a tourist guide  ;D

Author Craft / question on urban fantasy literature.
« on: April 22, 2008, 09:47:17 PM »
I recently found out (partly via amazon) that there is a whole bunch of books similar to Dresden Files. I mean that particular style of series with PIs and supernatural critters and so on. Supposedly a lot of overlap with romance stories lately.

I have read some reviews, talked with some people about it, and have come to the conclusion that I might limit my reading of this particular kind of UF to Dresden Files after all.

So as I have never read those other books (I am thinking about Patricia Briggs, Laurell Hamilton, Kim Harrison, Tanya Huff, Carrie Vaughn etc. here)
- are they - writing style wise - in any way comparable to Jim Butcher?
- are the perspectives and the narrative styles similar?

DFRPG / link to a Dresden Files actual play report
« on: February 09, 2008, 08:48:00 PM »
Hi, I am a complete noob here, but someone on rpg.net told me to post the following, so I just will.

I am a player in a World of Darkness based Dresden Files game. It is set in chicago and contains some of the characters from the books. I am not 100% sure about the boards spoiler policy, but concerning the following link, it is acutally rather easy: there is one minor fact taken from Dead Beat which is very slightly spoilerish, but maybe not that obvious anyway. but yeah, nothing in this post here.

I am off to other threads here, in the meanwhile, check out the report  ;D
with rating option (preferred)

direct link

(I just noted that much more people have read this thread than actually bothered to check the actual play thread, so I've included a direct link for your convenience)
