DF Spoilers / Re: I can see why some of the gods would be in pro wrestling
« on: September 23, 2021, 05:26:18 PM »
A goddess after my own heart.

Yeah. It was mentioned that the Pythia were Archives using knowledge of the past to predict the future, and there is a certain amount of hereditary power there involved in passing down the Archive. Personally, I think that the other children of previous Archives (I don't think it's ever stated that they only have one child, so it makes sense that there would be offshoots of the main Archive branch) have been seen in the series. Namely, I think that the non-chosen descendants of previous Archives are the ones who have Cassandra's Tears, like Lydia (whose real name was Barbara, if I remember right).
I don't remember the Barbara part, but that seems like a neat possible connection.

I'd also throw the various sibyls in as Archives.  The weird part about an Athena=Archive angle is the Apollo connection.  If the Delphi oracle was the Archive, where is Apollo coming into play?

DF Spoilers / Re: Why did Bob never spot Bonnie growing?
« on: September 23, 2021, 05:13:07 PM »
Wrong frequency search?  Bob is very magic based, whereas Lash is faith based.  Bonnie being difficult for him to spot, especially unprompted, seems reasonable.  Combined with a gradual growing period, maybe Harry wasn't "showing" yet and it go overlooked.

Not going to lie, I was really, really disappointed when Bill, Yoshimo, and Chandler FINALLY got a chance to fight on the page, and got completely curbstomped. It wasn't even close. They even had a freaking Sasquatch as backup and got their teeth kicked in.
I don't think they were even in Harry's league, to be honest, at least not by Battle Ground. No idea how they'd have measured up pre-Changes, but Winter Knight Harry completely outclasses them, in my reading of it.
It was against blampires with no prep time.  I think that was the only way it could have reasonably gone, especially with Drakul there to keep Harry's River Shoulders's attention.  They're all bad news.

Numbers makes a big difference in a fight.  I think individually, Harry could have taken down any of the wardens on that road, but altogether is much much harder.

Yeah, one wonders if Harry had decided to really object and resist the sex-scan and innuendo when they stopped him and Murphy upon their return from the Raith Estate how it would have turned out.  Especially with Murphy as back up, even though she was crippled.  Also if Chandler would have joined his fellow Wardens or would he have been as conflicted as he seemed and either stayed out of the fight or actually joined Harry?
I think Chandler is more loyal to Ramirez than to Harry tbh.  I doubt he would have gone rogue to help him against the other wardens.

Yeah, possibly a nice clue hiding in plain sight.

There have been theories that the loup garou might come back in some form (fitz from GS I think? As a bastard son of the first one). Part of the theory was trying to figure out how FM fits into the Circle’s plans and the idea of Fenrir since Odin is a big player in the story.

Original plan was to have twenty case files then cap it off with the BAT. Note that twenty is a multiple of five like the other Denarian books. My guess is that Nicodemus’s revenge plan against Harry/Mab/Marcone is how the BAT gets kicked off. Without Deirdre, he’s ready to take risks if not go against reality altogether. Up to this point, I think Skin Game was him preparing for what he’s expecting on the horizon.

DF Spoilers / Re: Harry actually should be out of the White Council
« on: September 21, 2021, 06:09:16 PM »
You have to remember that to the average Joe Wizard, Harry Dresden is a nightmare.

Indisputable Facts
  • Harry is the son of an expelled wizard that had a death sentence with the Council and was known to hang out with monsters.
  • Harry was adopted by a Warden in good standing with the Council, a war hero no less that helped bring down Kemmler, but Harry killed him with magic in unknown circumstances.
  • Harry openly flaunted tradition by practicing openly.
  • Harry started a war that could have been avoided, which got a lot of wizards killed.
  • Harry committed genocide against a supernatural nation that was actively pursuing peace.
  • Harry abandoned his duties after committing genocide, leaving his Council-sworn duty of protecting Chicago to a rogue apprentice wanted for murder.
  • Harry became the Winter Knight, the murderous assassin for the evil Sidhe Court.
  • Harry is a close associate and suspected lover of White Court royalty.
  • Harry performed necromantic magic and was not punished.
  • Harry killed with magic and was not punished.
  • Harry's apprentice performed mind magic and was not punished.
  • Harry worked with Nicodemus Archleon.
  • Harry worked with Mab numerous times before becoming her assassin.
  • Harry killed a Summer Lady.
  • Harry was involved in the deaths of the WinterLady and another Summer Lady.

It's no wonder he lost the popular vote, and you don't even have to bring speculation into it.
Harry is also the Warden of Demonreach, like Kemmler was before him (a few places back, I think).
Harry is also a starborn, whatever that actually means.  We do know that Drakul is in that small club.

It also doesn't help that Harry didn't show his face around Edinburgh much.  There wasn't a human being to balance out the terrifying reputation.

DF Spoilers / Re: Wonder what Eb meant by this

But that is exactly what shocked him, Eb realized in that moment that he had lost control.. The Blackstaff especially should never lose control, his/her judgement is paramount because of the kind of force they can wield.  I wouldn't be totally shocked if we see Eb trying to resign his post once he recovers.
While it's true that the Blackstaff should never lose control, Eb is a wizard with a wizard's arrogance.  He won't resign his post.  He either doesn't want to foist the burden on someone he loves or he doesn't think the new guy could do it as well as he could.

DF Spoilers / Re: Wonder what Eb meant by this
« on: September 21, 2021, 05:12:44 AM »
Reading the passage again, the thing that killed doppelganger!Harry seemed like a small piece of whatever main spell that Eb was preparing.

Quote from: Peace Talks Ch.32
“Family,” came the old man’s voice, a primordial growl lurking in it. “One. Of those things.”

He whirled toward the retreating boat, barely visible from the shore by now, and his staff burst into incandescent blue flame as he lifted it in his right hand, the hand that projects energy, drawing it back.

“No!” I shouted, and lurched toward him.

He spun, eyes surrounded by white, his face scarlet, his teeth bared in a snarl, snapping his staff out …

And what looked like a comet about the size of a quarter, blazing like a star, leapt from the staff, like some kind of bizarre random static spark, and plunged into my ribs and out my spine.

I tumbled down to the dock on my back, the stars suddenly unusually bright above me.
In that kind of emotional state, I could see Eb being sloppy with control of his spell.  He took in a bunch of energy, but wasn't careful enough with how he was controlling it.  When Harry surprised him, he lost control of a spark of it that was enough to kill Harry.

DF Spoilers / Re: New theory on Mac
« on: September 21, 2021, 12:09:01 AM »
Yeah, Puck as an entity is already a different character in the Dresden Files (although I think Gargoyles did him better).

As far as the type of role that Puck played, Mac is mysterious to Dresden, but he seems to be more of a known quantity outside of Dresden's inner circle.  Maeve, for instance, acts as if she knows who Mac is.  It's hard to hide in plain sight when people know who you are.

DF Spoilers / Re: What will Eb do?
« on: September 20, 2021, 04:19:36 PM »
Also, Proven Guilty states this:

"There’s a sign Mac’s got hanging up at the door that reads ACCORDED NEUTRAL GROUND. It means that the place was supposed to be a no-combat zone, under the terms laid out in the Unseelie Accords, the most recent and influential set of principles agreed upon by most of the various nations of the supernatural maybe ten or twelve years ago."

IMHO, if there *was* something equivalent to the Accords before 1994, it clearly didn't include anything which gave Eb (or the WCouncil in general) any grounds against the WCourt.
Emphasis mine.  The RPG is only of middling veracity, anyway.  The details sometimes contradict the books.  Better than speculation, but the books should take precedent.

Regardless, the Accords are there to provide structure to international conflicts, not to totally prevent war or to make war the only option.  Just because the two nations didn't go to war doesn't mean that there were no actionable grounds to go to war.

DF Spoilers / Re: What will Eb do?
« on: September 20, 2021, 03:45:17 PM »
No? The Accords were created way after she was already dead, in fact according to Harry (in Storm Front), they were created "very recently" (and according to WoJ, the exact year seems to be 1994).
Everyone seems to think the Accords are old, but they're in fact inspired *after* the Geneva convention, so with the speed at which the magical world at large operates, it makes no sense for the Accords to be a long-standing thing.
The *current* version of the Accords is from 1994.  The Accords are old enough that all the players have the rules pretty well figured out.  Plus, they're built on systems that are older, like guest rights.  It's like the last time a bunch of people got together like in Peace Talks to update the Accords was '94.

DF Spoilers / Re: Mirror Mirror character changes ideas
« on: September 20, 2021, 06:11:00 AM »
My guess is that Harry didn't say he loved Susan in the basement of Bianca's mansion. She went feral, knocked him out but didn't kill him because of the poison in his blood, so she killed Justine instead.

Upon waking up, Harry got out and headed upstairs to find Susan fully turned with Bianca. He couldn't kill Susan, so he walked away rather than fighting.

I also like to think he still beat the Nightmare while unconscious, and ate his power. By not using it to destroy the mansion, is stayed within him, partially corrupting him.

I also think Bianca could have sent footage of Harry's attack at the party to the White Council, which declared him a full warlock. Since the place wasn't completely destroyed like it was in GP, security footage might have survived.

Thus Harry starts on the dark path with isolation and regret while being hunted by everyone.
I think that’s pretty spot on. It would also ruin any chance that Thomas would be Harry’s ally, so probably Papa Raith is still in charge of the White Court.

Ordinarily I'd agree, but I think it was a bit more complicated than that.  I don't think Carlos approached Harry to be part of the security detail because he is good in a fight, though on the surface Harry is an obvious choice.  No, it was when he came to inform him he was on the detail that Carlos secretly slapped the tracking tab on Harry..  No, mostly it was a ruse so they could keep a close eye on him, and this was before Thomas did what he did.
I wouldn’t say mostly it was to keep an eye on Harry, but two birds one stone is always nice.

He didn't go head to head with Eb in a magical duel.  It was a duel with staves.  The moment Eb got too angry he killed fake Harry with magic.
Of course he did. They threw spells around, and Harry presses his physical advantage by closing in with frosty flooring and staff fighting.
Harry would have lost a purely magical duel, but there aren’t any of those outside an Accords duel. The point is Harry put up a respectable fight against the WC’s top enforcer. He’d stand a better chance against weaker opponents, i.e. most every other wizard in the world.

DF Spoilers / Re: DragonCon 2021 Starborn or Star Born?
« on: September 19, 2021, 06:57:06 PM »
My opinion on Vampires.

Their power is directly connected to how they feed, and how close they are to humans/mortality.  I believe that they feed on Spirit, which isn't the same as a persons soul.  I believe when it comes to humans they are made up of three parts.  Flesh, spirit, and soul.  The Flesh is the anchor to reality, and the spirit is the tether to the soul which is completely outside reality.  When the spirit is damaged, or weakened enough, the tether is lost, and the Soul travels on.  If the Flesh/Body is rendered dead, the Soul has no anchor to Earth, and the spirit/tether is left behind as a shade/ghost.

I believe the Vampires use the body as a vector to the spirit to feed on.

Black Court:  Most powerful.  Feed on flesh/death.  They kill a mortal whenever they feed, consuming all of the spirit.  Completely inhuman
Red Court: Second to the Black Court.  Feed on blood.  Usually not lethal but very damaging to the spirit.  Connected to humans, slightly
White Court:  Weaker than Black & Red Courts.  Feed on emotions through pleasure/fear/pain ect.  Not too invasive when feeding most of the time.  Much closer to humanity.  I will note that I believe Lord Raith, at peak power may have been approaching a level that would push him closer to the Red Court.  His kiss of death allowed him to devour an entire spirit, which I think is why he was so feared amongst his kind.
Jade Court:  Feeds on breath.  Not much is known about them.  My opinion is they are similar to the White Court in power and connection to humanity.  Slightly less human, or slightly more human.

I think the other Courts are all weaker.  The Black Court, and Red Courts really are the strongest in that their way of feeding is most damaging to both the body, and spirit, and also the most efficient.  Any other court that exists, I think, would be no stronger than the White Court, and their power level is determined by organization, reproduction, and collective cooperation.

I think that between the Black Court's personal power, and the Red & White Courts global footprint, there isn't much room for the weaker Courts.  The White's and Red's sucked up all the power, and influence, and it's unlikely they would share it.  So I think any other Court really doesn't have enough personal power, or ability to gain influence to matter much outside of maybe a small territory (like the Jade Court).

The Red Court is gone, but I think that power vacuum is being filled too quickly for the weaker courts to take advantage of it.

Other Courts feeding ideas:

Blue Court:  Feeds on sleep.  If they feed too heavily, the person dies in their sleep, and is seen as a natural death.  Some people become aware they are being fed on, and experience sleep paralysis, and the feeling someone is on top of them.  Science has explained this, but maybe not correctly :).  Not terribly effective in combat because they require you to be asleep to be effective.  If you are asleep, and they find you, you're in deep trouble.  A side effect of their feeding is you wake up feeling exhausted, and making you more vulnerable to their feeding the next time you sleep.

Gray Court:  Feeds on illness.  They like to hover around hospitals, and nursing homes.  They need the person to be weakened by illness, and then use that illness as a vector to the spirit.  They prey on the weak, and suffering, making them hated by all mortals who know of them.  They need to stay low because Wizards take great joy in eliminating them, and they aren't terribly powerful, weaker than the White Court, and not very effective against healthy people.
Yeah, I agree with the ideas here.  Black Court is the most powerful because every time they feed, they consume a death curse equivalent amount of magical energy.  Red is next most powerful since they consume blood which is the next best thing.  White is the weakest major vampire since they're focused on the "lighter" diet of emotional energy.

I hadn't heard the Breath WoJ for the Jade Court, but my initial impression is that it's probably somewhere between whampires and rampires, likely closest to whampires.

Leanansidhe was originally fairly vampiric muse. Makes artist go crazy and feeds on their blood.

Redcap as well in the OG stories.

Ghouls could be considered somewhat vampiric.

Recent WOJ they feed on Breath.

Just that their extreme isolationist in the Yangtze Valley River. They're not sure whether this "Chin" thing is gonna work out letter alone 'China'.
My working theory to distinguish vampires from other anthro-phages (e.g. fear-eating fey fetches) is that all vampires started as humans that contracted some kind of spiritual parasite (of varying styles and power).
The Black Court kills its host, and it allows a "vampire" spawn to come in and control the human corpse.  The Red Court infects other humans with a bite, and upon killing another creature the "vampire" emerges and transforms the living host.  White Court vampirism is born, but they most clearly have the Hunger demon parasite warring against the living human host.  Their kind of vampirism is transferred from conception.

I don't think they were really dedicated bodyguards for the most part. Chandler  is usually around the Seniors, yes, and guarding Ways, but Bill Meyers was a regular Warden down towards Texas, Harry was his boss. Carlos was western regional commander. Having Carlos and Bill get called up to a US fight is nothing odd. Until the last couple of books had we even seen Yoshimo? We had referenced her, when Harry was researching the ancestry of the Knights of the Cross. But just in a letter. They were NOT in the guard detail that went to Demonreach, and it should be expected Mai would have called in some heavies for that. And really, do we know where Chandler ranked? We know he had Carlos and Bill. Chandler is a guess.
Ramirez was in charge and got to pick the security detail, so he went with wardens he was comfortable working with and that were good in a fight.  It's why he approached Harry in PT to join the security detail.

We also know that Chandler is a very trusted warden by WoJ.  He's one of the few that gets solo guard duty for Edinburgh.  He's also allowed to pursue his time magic specialty, even though it skirts one of the Laws.

In the end, I think its pretty safe to say that Harry is in the top 15 most dangerous wizards after BG.  He's got plenty of raw power for a wizard.  He's (painstakingly) slowly improving his control and efficiency with magic.  He's got a long list of powerful entities where he has a strong working relationship.  He has a fallback position where he's nearly invincible in Demonreach.  Plus, he has the Winter Knight's mantle to draw upon and to guard his physical flank.

Let's not forget that he went head to head against the WC's top enforcer in PT.  Neither was going for the kill directly, but they weren't just sparring for fun either.  While Harry didn't win that fight, one mistake on either side could have changed the outcome easily.  In a fair fight (not that those actually exist in this series), Harry is definitely a big-ish fish in the WC.
