I prefer Terrence Stamp for Langtry. That way we get General Zod levels of annoyance with Harry's shenanigans.

Him, or Bruce Campbell.  :)

I've seen some of her work. The main reason I'm suggesting her is that she can pull of the nerdy college kid Andi starts out as, on top of "way to go butters" Andi. That's a pretty wide range of character progression, all things considered.

Okay, I've got a possible Andi. Everybody say hello to Melanie Leishman from Todd and the book of Pure Evil.

You might also look into the "witchcraft" of the area which is as distinct as voodoo/hoodoo to the geographic range.  Diableros, Brujas, curanderos, naguals, and the like. I would recommend looking into some of Carlos Castenadas works for inspiration, but for God's sake, don't smoke the jimsonweed.

I like his casting for Jack Murphy. Early on I had variously pictured either Aidan Quinn or a bearded Treat Williams as Michael but I don't think their current aging matches the timeline right.

I also like Bryce Dallas Howard, but for Lilly rather than Aurora. Not sure about Zoe Saldana as younger Luccio; she's a good enough actress but I don't know that the type casting matches on the dimples front. I always pictured someone that could pull off Greek/Italian so that Luccio's mannerisms wouldn't be jarring

gonna endorse the Andrew Bowen suggestion. There are few actors I think meet the actual type cast of Harry, but this guy could pull it off, particularly as he gets older.

The problem with all these well-known actors is that, given the number of references to pop-culure in the series, it'd kinda stretch credibility that Harry wouldn't at least comment on the resemblance. They'd have to at least look different, or it would get ridiculous.

or maybe just play the alternate reality deja vu reaction card.

I'd actually pictured Ron Perlman in heavy makeup for the earlking, but I think your choice for original Luccio is spot on. The tone it would set for the character, especially in the introductory bar scene in dead beat...

audience would just be thinking "aw hell yes, Ripley is gonna kick some necromancer @$$!"

Author Craft / Re: Bechdel test observations
« on: July 05, 2012, 04:18:44 PM »
At the risk of being chewed out here, does it really matter if a single author can't bass the Bechdel test? I would think it more of an issue that the entertainment industry as a whole can't.  For instance, I like a cheesy popcorn book series called the destroyer series (the movie Remo Williams is based off this). Clearly it is meant to be campy male fantasy, and this is okay. That's the idea. If however, every book or movie followed the formula of the destroyer series books, then we would have a problem.

So at what point do we start yelling at authors for not intentionally setting out to make their books pass the bechdel test?
At what point do we ask they change their own works to be politically correct in other ways? and at what point will going out of the way to satisfy these requirements actually start to interrupt the story? Worst case scenario, I can see these scenes sticking out like a bad product placement. Hell, why not just make the female-female conversation a feminine hygeine commercial and do both?

I'm not trying to play devil's advocate here, I just want to make the point that if too many people have to throw in their two cents on the creative process we get a story by committee without a cohesive focus. Which is bound to suck. I'd rather read the Dresden Files than a political statement.

Author Craft / Re: Christian influences in Fantasy writing
« on: April 12, 2012, 03:54:07 PM »
I have to second the cautionary advice above with a very simple sentiment. Focus on the values you want to shine through rather than drawing parallels between your writing and the bible stories. Most of the time a writer tries to get allegorical with scripture they end up beating the audience over the head with it. This is why I like Jim's portrayal of Michael so much. He is a paladin played straight, but he doesn't become a figure preaching from a pulpit. Instead Michael is christian by example, one which has more to do with what he stands for than what church he goes to every Sunday. If you want to portray christian idealogies positively, please don't make it thinly veiled evangelism or a grown-up version of veggie tales.
