It is hard to say how large the crowd will be at the Pen.  They can get a lot of people in there if needed.  They should be doing a webcast of the event. I need to double check on that and will post the link.  I'm assuming he will likely be there fairly late, so have not scheduled him for anything first thing at the convention on Friday.

A quick update for you all.

First of all, yes, we are trying to make sure everyone who wants to see Jim will be able to get into his panels. His solo talk will be Saturday morning and in the ballroom at the Sheraton that seats around 1,500 (where we will have several of the author guest solo talks this year).  One group panel will also be there on Friday. The rest will be in 500 seat rooms in the convention center, so those may reach capacity.  There's been lots of going back and forth with other programming departments over who gets to use the bigger rooms and we think we have it sorted out now. Its really been a big jigsaw puzzle this year with the number of authors we have and as the schedule comes together, pieces get moved around so I've held off publishing the specific day/time for those that might still move.

We are planning to do a signing each day, but those haven't been finalized yet.

I do want to note that our membership projections have gone up and there is the possibility that memberships may end up capped.  The price for the weekend does go up at midnight tonight, so if you want to save a few dollars, go for it.

We did announce some new guests of note, Paul and Storm, who will be doing a concert on Friday night with definite participation by John Scalzi and Pat Rothfuss (and possibly others).  You may have seen their video with George R. R. Martin showing up called "Write Like the Wind".

Any other questions, post them here.

Yes, Mysterious Galaxy will be the bookseller at the convention and should have plenty of copies.  Jim is also doing the signing at The Poisoned Pen in Scottsdale on Thursday night and they should have some available afterwards.  I would suggest that if you are planning to go to Phoenix Comicon, it would be best to purchase your tickets in advance.

For programming, it looks like Jim's main solo talk will be early afternoon on Saturday.  He'll be doing other panels throughout the weekend but that will be the one where it will be all about Jim's work.

Great.  Thanks Amber.  Just wasnt sure what to expect.  The Brandon Sanderson signings Ive been too usually have a huge line with people camping out 4-5 days etc So i wasnt sure if it was the same here.  So i can call that morning and get the book and my number?

Brandon's launch events really are events so draw a big crowd of his local fans.  Jim's MG launch will likely be a big crowd but not that big.  It would be best to call MG just to make sure since you aren't local.

As an FYI, if you are going to fly somewhere to see Jim, you might consider Phoenix Comicon where he will be doing multiple panels and multiple signings (as well as one at Poisoned Pen which just hosted Brandon).   I'm willing to bet there might be another author or two you'd like to see.  You'd still be giving Mysterious Galaxy your business since they are the bookseller at the convention.

SCOTT LYNCH EEEEEEEEE

Calm down....  Bear will be there as well, so restrain yourself.

BTW, We've got almost the entire list of authors announced.  Now the trick is figuring out who goes on what panel.  We definitely won't put 10 urban fantasy authors all on the same panel like San Diego.

A few notes on Phoenix Comicon for those who aren't local and might be interested in attending.

The convention is growing (much as a lot of Comic Cons), but we've been doing a steady increase over several years so have not had the growing pains some cons have had.  Last year's attendance was 55,000.  This year is expected to be more.  We've expanded the exhibitor space from last year and have additional program space.

We will have close to 70 published authors on hand with three publishers exhibiting (Tor Books, Del Rey Books and Angry Robot).  The front page at http://www.phoenixcomicon.com currently has around 40 of the authors listed with 20+ more to come.

For the Books and Authors programming, I have four rooms dedicated to SF/F literature oriented programming (including a number of panels about writing), one dedicated to educational topics (for which educators can get learning credits), plus will also have panels in our larger event rooms.  We're also doing an evening Drinks with Authors event on Saturday night.

On the exhibit floor, we'll have an Author's Alley area with many of the participating authors having table space, signing table for those authors not doing a table as well as a larger area for the authors who will definitely draw a crowd.  Our bookseller is Mysterious Galaxy Books and we've expanded their space this year to accommodate all the books they will be carrying.

Jim will definitely be doing a solo talk and will be doing panels with other authors during the weekend. We're still in the process of putting together panel ideas.

For those interested in gaming, we have a large gaming area with many RPG and card games available. There's also plenty of comics guests, anime, horror, costuming, youth, actor guests, and various other things going on.

The hotels closest to the convention center are filling up, with the Sheraton being the one with the most rooms available.  Yes, it will be warm in Phoenix in early June, but the convention center and the hotels have very strong air conditioners.  The light rail also goes right by the convention center, so if you are staying elsewhere and you can get to it, you don't have to worry about parking.

Any questions you may have about the convention, please post them in this thread.

The author guest list for that one is truly amazing.

And, there's still more to be announced, including several more Tor Books and Del Rey authors (both publishers will be exhibiting).  Penguin/Ace will have a presence but aren't exhibiting.

Although, even with the others to be announced, I think it is a toss-up between Jim and Charlaine Harris as to who will draw the bigger crowd.  Charlaine will be in Scottsdale on tour in Mid-May, so Jim's signing lines will likely be longer at the convention.

As programming gets fleshed out, I'll post details in the Phoenix Comicon thread.

If you are planning on going to the San Diego Comic Con it would be good to get your membership now.  They have sold out their four day memberships and have one-day memberships left.  Also, if you do not live in the area, hotel options are few and far between.

Calendar Event Discussion / Re: Signing: Phoenix, AZ, on April 6th

There was a very good crowd at Poisoned Pen, more than they planned for.  They ended up running out to some other stores to buy books from them so they'd have enough.  (They do arrange for signings at B&N occasionally so they do have a corporate account there).  I tried to warn them that last year's crowd wasn't as big as it could have been since Jim did an appearance at the AZ Book Festival the day before.  This time it was the only appearance in town so there was a full house.

He was very funny and relaxed during the Q&A.  Nothing revealed that I can remember that hasn't already been mentioned on reports from the other Q&A's.  I did take a few pictures.  I'll hopefully get them posted on my blog in the new few days (http://sftvblog.blogspot.com)

I think Murphy's Stunt Double was indicating that she would be in Phoenix in June, not Jim, thus missing the signing.  For MSD, if you are a Laurell K. Hamilton fan, and in Phoenix on June 5th, The Poisoned Pen will be hosting a talk and signing by her at the Scottsdale Public Library.  That one you do have to buy a book.  http://www.poisonedpen.com/event-calendar/laurell-k-hamilton

As for Jim's signing, they will likely be doing it ticketed for the line, and the ticket you get when you buy the book.  Those that don't buy a book there are at the end of the line.  I'll see if I can find out when they will start doing the tickets.  They usually don't limit copies signed, but if you have multiples of old books, they would certainly prefer you buy the new book from them.

The stairs on the back side are for the upper level, not the book store.  Parking is somewhat limited at the store, but you can park along the side streets there.  For those of you who were there last year, they have expanded the size of the store, but it will likely still be packed since last year the fans were split between the Poisoned Pen and the Arizona  Book Festival for the most part.

Looking forward to seeing Jim in the Phoenix area again.  The Poisoned Pen has remodeled since last time and should be able to accomodate a bigger crowd, so don't be shy about coming out to the signing.  Last year, there was also a signing at the book festival, so the crowd was split up some.

Note that there are two other authors scheduled for 1 pm before Jim.  I'm not sure how they will be handling the two sessions, though.

Calendar Event Discussion / Any Signings for Captain's Fury?
« on: December 03, 2007, 10:34:44 PM »
I haven't seen any indication of any signings for Captain's Fury.  Is there a Signed Page one in the works?

FYI, The Poisoned Pen in Scottsdale had Jim listed for a signing in April (but now that they revamped their website, it is no longer listed).

DF TV Series / Re: How was the series filmed?

I would love to see the series in HD.

They have been showing the series on Sky HD in the UK concurrent with the show's airing on Sky One.  That would indicate they have an HD version of the show availalable.
