DF Spoilers / Re: Now THAT's what I call a Sample Chapter!
« on: September 15, 2020, 09:15:05 PM »
One more thing, the look between Lara and Molly.. What is Molly so pissed about?  What does she know, is it Lara calling in the favors owed by the Winter Court?  Does she know that Lara might be behind what happened to Thomas in the first place?

Maybe she knows (and doesn't like) whatever the first favour was.

Small detail: We know that Morgan has used his sight in Macs Bar before, sweeping all around, and saw Mac, even if briefly...

“Morgan didn’t let his gaze linger too long near Mac or myself, and then he nodded to himself, and called out, 'Clear.'"

Presumably you'd have to stare at Mac to hurt yourself...

That depends on how you define how much he did.  The soul gaze, the Winter Mantle made Harry realize something, the kracken was afraid of him!  Then his allies came in and did their part.  However if they hadn't I wouldn't be so sure if Harry wouldn't have done more, because with the knowledge gained he now had the upper hand, but he didn't need to do more.

I guess. Maybe I'm not reading enough into that, it just seemed an odd line to have, if there weren't immediate consequences backing it up.

Notice he didn't even attempt to use the knife, he is still keeping that knowledge from the Enemy.

Yup. Although I thought he took two of the weapons off-island. We only get to hear about the knife ...

No calamari joke? Harry (and Jim are slipping).

I think the line from Murphy pointing that out was the telling one. It sort of weakens the impact if he then starts kraking jokes..

Molly has control of weather and sharks, does anyone else find that ominous? She also knew Harry had gone to the island.

Well, she is the Winter Lady, a certain power over dark creatures is indicated... As for knowing where Harry is, I'd imagine there'd be some way the queens can locate their knight, otherwise he'd just run away and hide pretty darn quick.

I mean, Goodman Grey could do it, if he could do magic...

No. I refuse to countenance any such thing :)

Dude, I grew up there. It’s “well preserved” in the sense that there’s a small park with a raised central monument (a little wall about 18” high, circular, about 20’ across, At the center of the park, filled with earth). There are roses on top.

There is no hint of castle, medieval or otherwise, the land is flat (apart from the central bit) and it has houses all around. You’d never tell the difference between it and any other park. When they say “preserved” I can only think they mean in the sense that with ground-penetrating radar they can figure out that something was there...

It’s a 10 minute walk from my parents house (“Castlegate Grove”) to this little park. I know because I walked the dog to and from it twice a day for almost a decade.

I hate reruns.  I don't want to see Sue or the Genowskwa.  Has Jim run out of ideas?

I love Sue. Re-runs of her are fine by me, and I'm pretty sure it'd have some original content.

West Derby Castle is more like 120 yards from end to end.

No-one actually knows how big West Derby Castle was, all records of its plans have been lost over the last almost a thousand years. We do know that when it was in use ~150 soldiers were quartered there, we know where the main motte was centered (there’s a monument), and it’s about 900 feet from there to “Castlegate Grove” and “The Armoury” as the crow flies. 400 yards (1200 ft) seemed about reasonable on that basis (there’s the other side of the motte, after all).

Whether there’s any historical accuracy in the road naming is up for debate of course. It was a motte and bailey castle, so it’s going to be of a reasonable size, just because the bailey part is separate from the motte. It was described as “dominating the landscape for miles around”, which also lends itself to the thing being reasonably big.

There were around 600 of these motte and bailey castles dotted around the UK, mainly as point-to-point contact and troops barracks. Liverpool also had another castle (a stone one) down by the river for coastal defence.

My point, castle-size notwithstanding, is that it’s not going to be a “real” castle, it’ll be one of those towers-that-someone-called-a-castle-because-it-sounds-better. There was a strange inversion in naming when real actual castles were named towers (eg: the Tower of London), leading to actual towers being then named castles as the meaning of the word was confused. Etymology is odd.

The lot of the house I grew up in would definitely be big enough for a small castle or a pretty large tower castle. Castles were a lot smaller than people think.

There are some small castles in Scotland and Ireland that are little more than towers, but most castles I’ve been to (dozens, we sort of have a bunch of them over here in Europe) are way larger than the average lot, like acres large. My parents live in “Castlegate Grove”, One street over is “The Armoury”, From end to end this is about 400 yards, for the armoury and the gate, and West Derby Castle wasn’t a large one.

I notice, even though the blackstaff keeps him from going outright insane, it does not stop him from the consequences of his own magic. The things he not only believes he can, but SHOULD do... What he did to Harry... Smdh...
I'd really love a scene where someone is caught in the crossfire of a magic spell and it does them no harm whatsoever.. like a child, simply because the caster does not believe they should ever hurt a child. I feel like Harry or Morgan would have such an ability..

I’m not sure it works that way. You have to have the will and belief to cast the spell in the first place, but after that it’s “actions have consequences” time.

- he certainly didn’t want to, but once let loose, the spell proceeded to its conclusion.

DF Spoilers / Re: Why, Thomas, Why? (Peace Talks Spoilers)
« on: July 25, 2020, 05:39:23 PM »
I'm not sure Thomas was set up at all.

Right at the start of the book, there's all this stuff about how his life is about to change, how the kid is important, and how Justine has a 50:50 chance of making it through the pregnancy. Thomas straight up says he has a solution in mind for all this in the first chapter and doesn't elaborate.

I think Thomas has Made A Deal, and that cost of that deal is the death of Etri. My favorite for the culprit is Etri's sister, Evanna, who Thomas has been "visiting". I think she offered him some sort of arcane help with Justine's delivery if he'd get rid of her brother, making her the outright leader of the people. We keep on being told how amazing the Svartalves are, and how even the Norse gods didn't want to tangle with them.

The counter-argument to this is that she plays a blinder of a part when Dresden turns up, and she could have implicated him easily, which probably would have made her less likely to come under suspicion herself. Perhaps she thinks she's so in-charge of the situation that she's not vulnerable and didn't want to complicate things. I guess we'll see.

The corollary of this is that “Junghg. S’Jnngh.” could be one of two things, a real plea to look after Justine (possible, but I think unlikely) or nothing to do with Justine and a warning of something - either way I don't think it's a warning to Harry that Justine betrayed him, though I realise I'm very much in a minority here :)

(I think it's supposed to look like "Justine. It's Justine" and the tear falling is supposed to be love-lost, but I still think Jim is misleading us).

Also, there's something else to consider about Genosowka/Blood. Yeah, shapeshifter. Yeah coin. But if he died in the Underworld, what if Hades sent him back under a Geas as his punishment.

I like this altered-memory theory, especially the above bit. Hades is known for his 'interesting' punishments. The Genowska being geased into (a) *helping* Harry, and (even worse, b) being subject to Harry's orders would be just about the worst thing possible for him, I think :)

DF Spoilers / Re: What if Harry's Assumptions are Wrong?

It’d be quite the twist if Justin comes back, Ded or not.

Isn't he in solitary?  That's the impression I got from my quick skim..... Supposed to get the book
today, so far no cigar.. :(

Yeah, he’s on the “keep the human sane and mostly asleep” protocol.

It occurs to me that the cell might provide its inmate with whatever it needs to keep it alive, which in this case is a whole bunch of energy. This assumes that ‘execution if possible’ isn’t part of the islands purpose, but we’ve seen a previous human inmate surviving reasonably well, so I doubt that.

Thomas experienced all the pain he inflicted on others when he was sent down, which suggests a redemption arc.

Yup.

Killing his hunger at this time will kill Thomas, he needs massive infusions of life energy or a suitable alternative.

Well, that depends on whether it’s Thomas that needs the energy or the demon. If you’re a demon capable of the things that Thomas’s can do, you presumably have the demonic equivalent of a high metabolism, presumably higher than a normal human’s. Removal of the demon (which up until now has been seen as impossible, so no-one knows the consequences) could be all that’s necessary for Thomas’s body to recover on his own.

Another possibility is that this is Harry’s ‘out’ from being the Winter Knight - that Thomas does need an influx of energy, and the Knight’s mantle is how he gets it, same deal as Harry - an immediate need with long term consequences. I don’t actually think this is the case for a bunch of reasons (I don’t see the upside for Mab, Harry needs more power in times to come, not less, and it cheapens the redemption arc) but it’s possible, and it would let Jim have the two brothers standing together against the enemy.
