DF Spoilers / Re: Angelic intervention in Fool Moon
« on: April 08, 2019, 11:09:31 PM »
In Changes seven words were used to manipulate Dresden from one of the Fallen.  In Ghost Story, Uriel balanced the scales with seven words.  In Fool Moon seven words prevented Harry from murdering Denton while in Hexenwolf form.

I felt Denton's pulse beneath my tongue.  Felt his whimpers vibrate into my mouth.  So easy.  One simple motion, and I would never have doubts, fears, questions.  Never again. And, something inside of me said in a calm tone, you'll never be Harry Dresden again.

So a voice inside of Harry told him that he'd never be Harry Dresden again, using seven words.  Coincidence?  Maybe, but still curious to me.

You could absolutely be right that the same entity whispered those words, but I don't think it was Uriel. In Ghost Story, Uriel inspired the 7 words, but he couldn't have actually been the entity speaking them, because the first word was "Lies." Mab wasn't lying, she was just wrong. She can't lie and Uriel knows that. Thus, for Uriel to say Mab was lying would make him a liar. I don't think he can lie either. That means some other entity must have spoken the actual words as the proxy of Uriel.

DF Spoilers / Re: Another Cowl Theory

I believe there is a WOJ implying Cowl is not simply a minor character unknown to Dresden. Something along the lines of "there is a reason they were hiding their identity."

You miss my point, or perhaps I wasn't very good at making it...  Harry did the killing, he didn't throw a death curse... That's the last act of the one dying.  If anyone was going to throw a death curse it would have been Justin, since he was the one dying... Unless of course he died instantly before he could throw it at Harry... Or for some reason he did want to...

I note Corpsetaker had a death without an apparent death curse. Was it actually Corpsetaker's death curse that allowed her to enter the spirit world and avoid what comes next? I don't know but if it was and Justin also didn't throw a death curse . . .

There is at least one WOJ where he has stated categorically that Justin is dead, with an emphasis on DEAD.  However, as established especially in Dead Beat and Ghost Story, being dead does not necessarily mean you are out of the game.

I really don't know what I was thinking, you are right. I believe the quote was Justin is dead, D-E-D (deliberately mispelled) dead. Also, if I recall, when asked if Justin was as dead as Harry, JB said "Oh, at least that dead."

Thus, my theory is bunk, Justin did die in the fire. However, that doesn't mean he didn't somehow help Elaine escape to the NN or temporarily take over Elaine's body somehow and makee deals with Summer that Elaine was then bound to honor, since it was her body that made the deal. There's just too much mention of Justin to be a deceased bad-guy mentor that we won't see again, and to much mystery about Elaine for her disappearance to be as simple as "I ran away" and got caught up with Summer by happenstance.

Those are all good comments. I think I've been imagining the enthrallment as too much of a "puppet master" spell than it actually is. But if Justin's death didn't end the enthrallment, does that mean Elaine is still suffering from permanent changes to her way of thinking?

On retrospect, if Elaine ran from the fire early in the battle, it is also possible she could escape the White Council. The White Council would be on the hunt for Harry and would have his magic signature to use to find him. However, they wouldn't know Elaine existed and the fire could have cleansed the signs of any magic Elaine had used. Since Leah was hanging around watching over Harry, there also could have been someone from Summer hanging around who swooped in to take advantage of Elaine's situation.

But, I do still think Justin escaping into the NN with Elaine is quite possible. Elaine may have run from the fire, but she could have just as easily stuck around fighting an internal battle against enthrallment as to whether she would help Justin or Harry. If the latter happened, Justin could still have opened a way to the NN, taken Elaine with him, then gone to summer and struck a deal for the two of them, in which he basically indebted Elaine to Summer in exchange for Summer's help in hiding the fact he is still alive from the WC. The theory is still viable, although less likely.

The only example we have that I can think of where an "My death ends the spell" effect is in play (the curse on Papa Raith), has been something that's specifically noted as clever and unusual, so I don't think it's the norm.

That was noted as clever and unusual precisely because Margaret Le Fey got around the restriction that the curse should not have lasted past her death.

Typically death curses are one-shots, likely because enchantments can't normally survive the caster's death (or sunrise/sunset). Cassius' death-curse is arguably a counter-example, but I still consider that a one-shot. It only takes effect once - at Harry's death. Cassius wasn't able to curse Harry to "live alone," because that would be an ongoing effect that would need to be sustained.

Honestly, the RPG probably has the answer to this question.

•   The one choice that the evil Harry in Mirror, Mirror made differently back around Bianca’s party was being straightforward with Susan and inviting her as his plus one, rather than Michael.

I've heard mention of clues in the story referred to as JB hitting us with nerf bats. Personally, I feel like the clues regarding the choice at Bianca's party are more like JB hiring a team of professional baseball players to beat us into submission with real bats.

1. The opening chapter is Michael lecturing Harry that he needs to tell Susan he loves her or he is going to lose her.
2. Leah takes Susan's memories of Harry
3. Harry saves Susan when he tells her he loves her, which restores Susan's memory of him and allows her to resist the Hunger

The choice Mirror, Mirror Harry makes differently is to not tell Susan he loves her (#3). It's the central decision in the story from the first pages to the end.

What are you basing this on? To my knowledge, this is just plain not something the series has established.

Admittedly, that was just an assumption based on my general understanding of how magic has worked in the books. Are you suggesting it would break before he dies? Or that Justin's death wouldn't be sufficient to break the spell? I suppose those are possible, but they seem less likely to me to be the way enthrallment would work in the DV.

DF Spoilers / Re: WAG: why Nicodemus wanted the knife
« on: April 04, 2019, 10:57:34 PM »
Kill Lucifer?  Why would Nicodemus want to kill Lucifer, when it's clearly TWG that he's so bitterly impassioned against?  Furthermore, why would Lucifer help Nicodemus in Small Favor, if Nicodemus has ever displayed any issue at all?

Not arguing against you, per se; I just love twisty theories.  Straight and narrow ones generally don't have a chance of happening.

See Mab and Leah for a trusted enemy relationship similar to what Nico/Luci would have. They might work together, but Lucifer kicked Anduriel out of hell and trapped him in a coin precisely because Nicodemus was one of his strongest generals and therefore a threat to Lucifer. However, while the above is true, I agree it is too straightforward and too unrelated to the Outsider theme to be the motivation behind Nicodemus wanted the knife.

My theory is that when Harry suggested to Nicodemus in SmF that there was a traitor in the Denarians mix, while we were led to believe it was Namshiel, Nicodemus' investigation revealed that the treachery goes deeper and discovered that Lucifer is nemfected.

Here is the evidence: In Skin Game, Nicodemus sacrificed his daughter in Hades to protect her from the Enemy. It doesn't make sense that she needs protection from the TWG, because the worst that TWG would do is send her soul to hell for eternal damnation. That means Nicodemus is trying to keep her out of hell and put her in hades (the place) instead. Hades (the god), however, suggests that she isn't going to escape her crimes. Nicodemus is smart enough to know she's still going to be tortured in hades, so there must be some other reason than avoiding torture that explains why hades is preferable to hell. The difference has to be their respective rulers, Hades v. Lucifer. Why would Lucifer be bad and more specifically, why would being sent to hell to be tortured by Lucifer deliver her to the hands of the Enemy? Simple, Lucifer is Nemfected.

If Justin was Cowl, wouldn't Cowl have been far more willing to kill or otherwise put Harry down in DB?

Harry did burn his house down and cost him Bob and this thralls.

Not if you take a coldly practical approach toward things. Justin wouldn't blame Harry for defending himself because Justin would do the same in Harry's shoes. As long as Harry isn't a threat to his plans, Harry doesn't need to be eliminated. It also remains possible that Harry will someday in the future come around to Justin's way of thinking and join his side, so again, unless Harry poses a threat (or too much of an inconvenience), there is no reason to eliminate him.

The other big Justin evidence is Elaine surviving. The enthrallment spell on Elaine wouldn't break until after Justin dies. How does a half-trained wizard come out of enthrallment, survive a fire that killed her master, avoid the White Council when she doesn't even know they exist (Harry learned about it from Bob) and find her way to Faerie? It seems likely Justin escaped the fire by opening a way to the NeverNever and taking Elaine with him. He then used the fire as an opportunity to fake his death. He took Elaine to the Summer Court and basically sold her to Summer in exchange for protection for her and assistance in hiding the fact he survived from the Council.

I don't think that Nicodemus would go through all that trouble, especially with sacrificing his daughter, if the grand prize was an item which had a slight improvement over the noose already around his throat.

Honestly, with this guy, I think there's only one or two things that he would give about anything for.  My best guess is that the knife (if it IS the same spear which pierced Christ's side) is a conjunction, much in the same way that Halloween is - it's an item which allows the user to slay an immortal.  Only instead of having to wait for a particular time, or approaching a being while IN the flow of time, it just gives them the ability to kill.

No real evidence, but it fits thematically both with who Nicodemus is, the small list of impossible things he'd sacrifice his daughter in order to accomplish, and known potential powers given the history of the item in question.

I agree with that. In fact, I would say either you are right and I'm wrong, or we are both right. I think Nicodemus wants to kill Lucifer. Your theory makes sense in that it gives him the power to accomplish that task. My theory could also be true - because Nicodemus needs the knife to actually win (the noose wouldn't be enough), but my theory isn't necessary.

As JB is a lazy writer, it makes sense for him to use the same possession methodology for Nemesis as he does for Denarians. We have seen Denarians operate in two ways.

1. Anduriel/Nicodemus work as a partnership. This parallels Nemesis/Maeve - Maeve was voluntarily working with Nemesis in exchange for freedom from her mother. Nemesis prefers this method.

2. Magog uses brute force to enslave the minds and bodies of his hosts. This parallels Nemesis/Cat Sith.

Now let's look at Harry and Lasciel. Through Lasciel's spirit, Lasciel attempted to form a cooperative (#1) relationship with Harry. However, as shown in Small Favor, Nicodemus believed that Lasciel would be able to use brute force (#2) to paralyze Harry long enough for Nicodemus to kill Harry.

My theory is that Mab is currently infected in the same manner that Harry was. When Mab touched took the Athame from Leah Nemesis was able to imprint on her. Nemesis is currently attempting to build a cooperative (#1) relationship. Mab is currently refusing and is too strong for Nemesis to simply take over like it did Cat Sith.

Why is this important? I think that Mab recognizes she can only prevail against Nemesis in the short term. Eventually, Nemesis will erode her defenses and start to take over. That is why Mab wants Harry as WK. We are vulnerable to ourselves. The Queens are Winter and the WK is part of Winter. Thus, while the Queens appear to control the WK, they are also secretly vulnerable to the WK. Mab needs a WK that will be strong and wise enough to exploit that vulnerability and kill her when she starts to lose control. One of Mab's goals in Cold Days was to start Harry on the road to discovering that the Queens are vulnerable to the WK. Harry now knows that the Immortal Queens can be stopped in certain places or certain times, and is on the path to learning that the Immortal Queens can also be stopped by certain people (i.e. their Knight).

This brings us to two possibilities. The first is that Harry will actually kill Mab, setting off the BAT. However, I think Harry is going to get around that and go with option #2. Harry will realize that it is Winter that is vulnerable to the Winter Knight, not the individual person in which Winter resides. Thus, Harry, will find a way to destroy the Winter mantle, setting Mab free of Winter. This will still set off the BAT, but it will create a touching scene in which Mab (and Molly) are restored to their humanity.

DF Spoilers / Re: Vadderung Theory Debunked
« on: April 01, 2019, 10:58:34 PM »
I don't have the link on me but Jim mentions in a Q&A Thor travels around COlleges playing College Football, much to Odin's chagrine.

So with that confirmation of where Thor is, the favoured theory that Donar Vadderung means Thunder YoungFather, isn't indicitave that Thor took over the Odin mantle. Siiigh. Alas it was a theory I enjoyed.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Df_3c02lelg&feature=youtu.be

around the 12-13 minute mark.

It does seem more likely it was simply a hint that Vadderung = Odin, rather than a hint that Thor became Odin. Old Norse is a Germanic language.  "Ung" is a suffix in German that typically turns verbs into a noun (e.g., erinnern "to remember," becomes Erinnerung "a memory.") "Vaddern" could be a verb that means "to sire a child." Thus, Vadderung would be a way to say "sire" or "father," and the name Donar Vadderung would just be Thor's sire. I have no idea where the "young" portion of that theory comes from.

True, but I have a hard time believing that this is true in the Dresdenverse. For one thing, it destroys all tension--Harry has the Knife, ergo he will always win. For another thing, it undermines free will somewhat if the wielder will win no matter what anyone does.

It doesn't destroy all tension if it is limited to the wielder of the knife cannot be defeated in battle. He can still be tricked, trapped, betrayed, or murdered, just not beat in a fight. It also doesn't destroy free will - you can always choose not to engage the wielder in a battle. Yes, the wielder might kill you - but that was the wielder's choice to do so.

He could also get out of there, then give Molly to Father Forthill/Michael to hide.

And leave an untrained magically active kid to learn on her own? Harry is wise enough to know that if she doesn't get proper training she is likely to become corrupted by the power - especially given that she had already started down a particular road that is paved with good intentions. Molly's only good chance was to be trained by Harry, Eb, or someone similar.
