Um, the fires that Harry set off with his KABOOM were very real..  The gas station fire was set off by Harry's magic, he didn't use a match or a flame thrower.

The fires were sparked by magic, but the burning gasoline fire itself would, I think, qualify as natural flame, just as the gas circle in the garage was sparked via Harry's spell but still affected the Hounds as natural flame.

So, if Eb is to be believed, the Hounds can avoid most of anything based on Willpower (magic), but suffer more damage via natural processes, without a Will shaping them.

... or even that might not help since this isn't emotion-based. Thomas' Hunger Demon doesn't need emotions to feed on his own life energy. Maybe no protection will work against feeding "from within".

I think that's the key here. Just as Thomas' demon feeds on his own energy when there's no other food available, the baby's demon, connected to Justine through the womb, feeds on her, because that's what's available to it. And since Thomas' True Love doesn't protect him from his own internal Hunger, Justine's Love can't protect her from her baby's Hunger. They're going to need another solution.

My guess is that it would be hard to find a living human who isn't descended from royalty, if you go back far enough. So, odds are Dr. Helena Pounder is, even if River Shoulders doesn't count.

Good point, I'm ashamed I didn't think of that!

Re: Thomas taking up the Sword of Love...

Notice that the Swords and meant to balance the Coins.

Notice that in Skin Game, Nic changed the game by recruiting powerful demi-humans to take up coins -- Blood-on-His-Soul successfully and Goodman Grey unsuccessfully.

The logical result should be Heaven powering up the Knights of the Sword to keep the balance -- which makes it more likely that we'll see a supernatural demi-human recruited to take up a Sword.

Of course, a more explicit balance to Blood-on-His-Soul would be the scion of Strength-of-a-River-in-His-Shoulders... who coincidentally is moving to Chicago...

That's an interesting idea, and I'd like to see it happen. But is Strength-of-a-River-in-His-Shoulders a king, or related to one? Earlier in the series, Harry had a theory that sword wielders are descended from royalty. (Sounds like I need to reread the Bigfoot stories!)

Thomas definitely qualifies-- Papa Wraith was King of the White Court.

Still, my main fear about that story is that Mister is not mentioned.

If I'm remembering correctly, Mister was living with Karrin, so I'm not sure his non-appearance in the short story is too dire. At least, I hope not.  ;)

But based in this latest drop, I'd say

I've suspected that the "Murphy's funeral" hint is a mislead of sorts... a Murphy may die, but we don't know that it's Karrin. IIRC, she's got a big family. One (or more) of her relatives might die as collateral damage if when a big fight kicks off, especially if they're in law enforcement. That could impact the choices she makes further down the line... but that's just a WAG. (My first one! Yay?)

And as a member of Winter, even if not a true fairy, Molly can't give away answers for free. There has to be a price to pay, a bargain struck...

DF Spoilers / Re: Thoughts on Simon Petrovich being Cowl

(if he is someone we know...there is apparently a WOJ that says we do).

Of course it's someone we know. It's more painful for Harry, and therefore more fun for Jim, if Cowl is somebody he (and by extension, the reader) knows.

Beyond that, I have no idea who Cowl is.  ;D

I'm not saying it wasn't wrong, or terrible-- it was. Harry did make the choice to play it out that way. And yes, I think he definitely was stained by triggering the black magic spell, on top of the psychological damage he took in doing what he did.

But it's not like Harry had a ton of options at that point, either. He saw the shot, and he took it-- knowing very well how horrible it was. That should have consequences.

I'm not saying it's completely justified... but it is understandable, for lack of a better word.

I'm torn on the sacrifice in Changes.

The ritual itself is the blackest of magics. But Harry was able to subvert it, to take out a great source of evil in the world. And Susan was a willing sacrifice. She was willing to die to save her daughter's life-- and with the vampire side of her taking over, in a way, she was already dying. The reason Harry had to kill her was because she couldn't do it herself.

So while Harry undoubtedly accrued some stain of black magic from triggering that spell, I wonder if he might have received less than the total amount, due to mitigating circumstances. It was, in some way, an act of love... and I don't have the books handy at the moment, but I remember someone (Uriel?) telling Harry that if he acted out of love, he wouldn't completely lose his way.

I could be wrong, but that's my (half-formed) take.

If you like the Locke Lamora books, you might enjoy The Palace Job, the Prophecy Con, and The Paladin Caper by Patrick Weekes.

A former noble who ran away from home to become a soldier (and is now a thief) must assemble a rather motley crew to steal back a family heirloom, and hijinks ensue. Their merry band of misfits includes a fast-talking tinkerer, a love priestess-turned-death priestess with a talking Warhammer (with three lines), an almost-wizard, an acrobatic fighting monk who refuses to battle people, and a unicorn shapeshifter whose fondness for virgins isn't quite what you'd expect... It's been described as a fantasy version of Ocean's Eleven or Leverage, with more than a dash of comedy. (For example, Lock's second-in-command Kail never fails to begin a fight with an insult about his opponent's mother.)

I really enjoyed the books, but I don't recommend starting them late at night. I've lost a lot of sleep that way over the last three days.  ;D

@morriswalters: It's not unusual for a hardcover release to have a paperback ARC. I saw that more than once when I was lucky enough to work in a bookstore.  ;)

Agreed. If this was going to come out in December, I think we would have heard about it by now. I'm still hoping for January...

And yes, I've tried to Jimfect people too. I'm still working on my cousin... ::)

DF Spoilers / Re: Info about Peace Talks from Reading the WoJ section
« on: September 13, 2019, 12:26:48 AM »
I'm thinking (hoping) the April 2020 date is a conservative guesstimate. If Jim got the manuscript back from the Betas and submitted it to the publisher in August, that's an eight-month turnaround, giving plenty of time for revisions, typesetting, printing, etc.

I'm truly hoping the publisher decides to expedite the process (and not just because I want it in my hands ASAP.) I'd heard here somewhere that the beta readers were getting chunks to read during the writing process. If that's true, then hopefully (crossing fingers) the manuscript won't need much polishing. Plus with all the pent-up demand for the title I think it's worth their while to get Peace Talks out as quickly as is reasonably possible.

I'm still hoping for December, but first quarter 2020 is also possible. The only justification I can think of for waiting until April is to avoid January and February, which tend to be slow months for retail in general. (And IMHO a good way to fight slow sales is to publish a proven author!)

There's a timeline over at the Official Jim Butcher site (here: http://www.jim-butcher.com/timeline) Priscellie started it, and lots of fans helped build on it, so I figure it's probably the best info we can get (besides WOJ.)

Discontinuities make it hard to pin down Harry's age, but the best guesses make him either 25 or 27 during Storm Front. Summer Knight takes place two years later in-series, so Harry's 27 or 29 years old then.

(I'm glad that resource exists, because I don't think I'd have figured it out on my own. And wow, if Harry was born in 1974, I'm two years older than he is!  :o ;D )
