DFRPG / Re: Characters with Swift Transition
« on: May 30, 2017, 03:35:50 PM »
i use it for quick transit. a good lore roll pretty much keeps you on the right path and the white council used it to fight there war with the red court as they have no other means of reliable transportation. So it isn't all bad. And it can be used by the knowledgeable  (read the white council and its members) as fast transportation though not instant. I see no reason to disallow this justto make things harder on players.

i always thought the skill swap allowed people to focus on mental and social skills and then invert those skills when they became animals so they could participate in combat. I thought they were fine with that view. I never really thought of it as overpowered kind of under powered without additional abilities

Effectively, potions already do this.

The base power of a ritual is your Lore
The base power of a potion is your Lore

You can make rituals more complex using declarations and FPs
You can make a potion more powerful with declarations and FPs.

Assuming a base Lore of 5 and a focus item of +2, two skill declarations and a FP you can have an 13 shift ritual spell in your pocket.  A dedicated crafter would have more potent spells, obviously.
there isn't much difference in what i proposed and enchanted items/potions  except i was  looking for stuff stored internally so it couldn't be taken away and it storing this internally matches the other story line I kind of like. I was thinking of making a new type of never never critter that could cross evocation and thaumaturgy as their normal magic and pretty much store the results until needed with the effects always being permanent unless the spell was broken. i am going to keep the idea out of the hands of wizards. its not mortal magic

oh yeah it would be imagine most wizards pushing the limit could probably make spells around 15 easy then they store them for use later. I figured if they messed up any of the rolls or stories they would have to start over and they wouldn't be able tap their skill the next time around that sort of thing. Still they would be sitting on a lot of firepower essentially enchanted items with a much higher limit. Got the idea from Kim Harrison books

i was thinking of a concept that would allow wizards to store thaumaturgy spells for later use. I would tie it to lore allowing one stored spell per point. Because its thaumaturgy there would be no cost invoking it. No limit to strength or power like enchanted items and potions. The amount of stored spells could be increased with refresh on a one for one basis. The spell could be stored on an item or taken internally like a potion but not active until invoked. So a basic transformation spell could be invoked pretty quickly lasting like a thaumaturgy but as quick as evocation. Its better then evothaum because it can be a full ritual spell stored.

I can see that for self sponsored magic, but sponsered magic wouldn't that be tapping the power of the sponsor

« on: January 26, 2017, 04:11:11 AM »
does it cost a mental energy to cast or is it like thaumaturgy where there is no cost because its slow and uses another source of power. Does self sponsored evothaum share the same cost or lack of cost?

not unfair, but quickly over the top for the player wizard template already puts you at -7 a couple of weak fey powers and he on the side of the monsters more or less

changelings if they start with the wizard package and a few fey powers thee pretty much over the top right away. Can we separate out the wizard powers  from fey powers and when they reach -10 fey powers they have made the choice.

DFRPG / Re: Nerfing wizards, advice wanted
« on: December 18, 2016, 05:26:06 PM »
i dont see the need to nerf them. The game revolves around the power of wizards. They start out insanely strong that's the point of the game. The focus has to be on getting around objects instead of going through them. Politics and agreements really powerful wizards have in place, the accords all this has to be brought into play. Piss of the wrong wizard and he starts manipulating events behind the scenes to make everything the offending wizard does more difficult. That can affect the game in a lot of ways reduced successes explained as resistance the player wizard wasn't aware of. its high handed but eventually it could lead to a story that helps players understand they aren't the only big fish in the lake and the time for using all your abilities is only in the most dire of circumstances. And there is still the fact that magic and the magic world is a secret. Some people are aware most aren't dresden is an anomaly and if not for his early patronage and raw power would have been brought to heel. Wizards need to focus on working in secret or "resistance you didn't realize was there can  start affecting the outcome of rolls and effect. Remember how blackstaff used his magic to block Marvas magic to allow Harry's group to have some success. Same thing can be used against wizards who insist on overly overt use of power. Magic is still a secret and wizards aren't superheros.
