Is Faerie Magic not a sub-type of Sponsored Magic? It is listed separately on Rick Neal's page...hmm...this bears investigating.
My thoughts exactly lol  ;D

a possibly related question(sorry if it isnt) Could an outsider grant sponsored magic? and would the fairy queens grant sponsored magic(like to their knight) or would that be more like giving them fairy magic?

well i wont lie using timed scenes is a really powerful tool(i feel) it should only be used rarely. Frankly it just gets annoying if every time something happens you have only limited time to think. It keeps pace but the people i play with frown upon it largely so i can only use it at really focal points. but when ever they see me start tapping that hourglass as we are working up to a big scene the look of fear on their faces is just priceless. I can see it going through their heads now "okay hows he gonna screw us over?"  ;D

I personally have preffered the three warnings system(own personal name dont know if it has a real one) Basically ill give the players like a comment like, hey this will happen soon and let them react to that. If what ever they do doesnt change things then i say Hey this is still a big problem over here. Then they get to react again. If what they do still doesnt solve the problem then i say basicly you get one last chance. If they cant have solved the problem by now its usually just one of those things were you say sorry and see if their characters die.
Based on your example i would say hey the train is running out of track. Then maybe next i would say as the train continues to barrel toward certain death. Then finally if they havent gotten away by then i say you see the end of the tracks vanish under the train as it begins to go off. If they havent managed to resolve that situation somehow then well... sorry. It might not kill them all but it certainly could cause one or two of them to be maimed or out of main combat for a session or two.
as for timed events i use an hour glass its very dramatic but can involve lots of shouting. lol ;D

Well I heard them say the rpg is only going to cover the first ten books initially. Thats up to small favor but they may be doing expasions that will involve material from later books. I dont have an exact time set for how long that is or anything though lol.  ;D

Thanks for the awsomely helpful reply :)
I think the whole story telling thing sounds really interesting. I cant wait to get my hands on a book to learn more about that. Now i cant wait to rant to my friends about why they should buy this lol  ;D also i have a feeling that after i get this game im going to have a totally odd time going to the store and realizing that the diffrence between getting barbaque chips or sour cream and onion could be the diffrence between life and death lol.

DFRPG / Question about Thaumaturgy.
« on: March 19, 2010, 03:53:39 AM »
okay so i have been reading up quite significantly on pretty much everything to do with this game lately that i can find. I'm pretty sure i have the basic idea of evocation down. The lore, conviction, and discipline aspects of it, how you get to pick 3 elements when you take it and you can specialize in one and such, but i'm not really understanding alot on how thamaturgy is supposed to work. From looking at dresden's character sheet it would appear that you can specialize in a type of power too. But divination is what he is specialized in so my thoughts that thamaturgy would run on the same elements as evocation are totally shot.

So my question is, basically, can someone explain the basic idea of how thamaturgy works(like in game, i pretty much get it in the novels) like how discipline, lore and conviction work into it(assuming they are even part of it)
And maybe a rough power level because i assume its far stronger than evocation potentially(or whats the point lol)

Oh and if this is like a no-no or something, like i'm asking too much, or something spoilerish, you have my deepest apology's. i just suffer from extreme curiosty lol  ;D. So any answer or anything really that can help would be very much appriciated.

Okay just by looking at my name im sure pretty much everyone can guess who my favorite character is lol. but im really quite curious as to know wether or not he will be statted up, as he was/is(dont feel like getting into that debate) a majorly important character and since most npcs are statted i was hoping he would be too. Any info on this would be most graciously recived. Thanks in advance lol  ;D.
